So what sort of gas mileage should somebody expect from something like a '72
280SE? Fun to drive? The pics look good, he wants alot but it *could* be worth
it. Newton is a pretty spendy place... Well parts of it are anyway.

On the smaller APCs the battery door is usually on the bottom. On the
bigger units it's sometimes behind the front bezel, especially on
rack-mount ones. Getting the old battery out can be a chore because
they tend to swell up when they fail.

Small ones generally have a single 12-volt gel cell battery or two
6-volt ones in series. Bigger ones sometimes run higher voltages. A 3
kVA rack-mount one we had at one place I worked used eight 12-volt
batteries in series-parallel to give 48 volts.

2007-02-02 Thread Donald Snook
I was at the bank last week and I saw an elderly gentleman get out of a
VERY nice 123 300D. I was right behind him in line and we had a few
minutes to talk because the line was moving VERY slow. I asked him
about his car and he seemed very pleased that someone asked about it.
We continued our discussion outside and he showed me more of the car.
He had a 1984 300D with 23,000 miles (he was the original owner). It
was perfect! I don't mean perfect for a 20+ year old car, I mean
PERFECT! It was that Charcoal grey color with the grey/black interior.
I have never seen one of these cars that looked like it was BRAND NEW.
I couldn't believe how nice it was. The only potential drawback was
that he smoked big ole cigars in the car (his wife won't let him smoke
anywhere else). I liked the smell, it wasn;t like cigarettes, it was a
very rich humidor type smell (I am a cigar smoker, so I guess not
everyone would appreciate it)

He started it up and it sounded great and had the tiniest amount of
smoke at start up and that's it. I was drooling over the car. We
talked more and he said that he was considering getting rid of it
because he was going to move to Florida and his wife really wanted to
take the Minivan. He said he was 80 years old and just didn't need a
second car. I begged him to give me first chance to buy it. He said he
would when it came time to sell it. He seemed really pleased that
someone noticed how nice it was. He also said he had ALL his service
done at the Mercedes Dealer and they never drooled over the car they way
I did. Here's hoping I get a chance to buy this car.

at 10:41am local yesterday, to sorting facility at 11:43pm last night, went to
ATL this morning, then to CHS, and it is out for delivery to me now.

It takes 3 days for the USPS to deliver a letter 10 miles away.

“Free” shipping, they estimated 2 weeks. Now arriving in less than 2 days
(actually “next” day not counting the time aspect). I don’t even know how this
is possible. What a world we live in.

2006-12-18 Thread LarryT

Hi Curt,
I owned a 72 or 73 280SE 4.5 (can't remember which) back in the mid-80s and
loved it - until I had to fill up with gas.
That 4.5 engine is the same one used in the later 450SE,SEL and SL - when
its running and tuned up *perfectly* you can squeeze out 13-15mpg. It's an
awesome engine - really pulls that big sedan (one of the best MB - or anyone
for that matter - *ever* made) around.

It's an amazing car - big, comfortable, quite and once up to around 75 or 80
the suspension gets extremely smooth and even *more* quiet than before.
Mine would chirp the tires when I hit passing gear while running at 45mph or
so -

Parts are expensive - IMHO of course - and finding someone who know what
they're doing can be difficult.

And don;t forget it's over 34 years old -

If I win a lottery I'll buy another one -

So what sort of gas mileage should somebody expect from something like a
'72 280SE? Fun to drive? The pics look good, he wants alot but it *could*
be worth it. Newton is a pretty spendy place... Well parts of it are
anyway.

Re: [MBZ] Wow

2006-12-18 Thread Peter Frederick

Lousy.

The sixes get about 18 on the highway, 13 or 14 in town, the V8 (much
more desirable in my opinion) get 16-17 on the highway if you keep
your foot out of it (difficult, they love to go fast) , 14 if you
don't, and can be as low as 12 in town. If you set them for maximum
rich mixture (for more power) highway milage is more like 14, 10 in
town.

The V8 is an absolute blast to drive 00 enormous power and (if the
suspension is in good shape) very good handling for a large car.

Easy to run at 100 mph all day.

Hi Curt,
I owned a 72 or 73 280SE 4.5 (can't remember which) back in the
mid-80s and
loved it - until I had to fill up with gas.
That 4.5 engine is the same one used in the later 450SE,SEL and SL -
when
its running and tuned up *perfectly* you can squeeze out 13-15mpg.
It's an
awesome engine - really pulls that big sedan (one of the best MB - or
anyone
for that matter - *ever* made) around.

It's an amazing car - big, comfortable, quite and once up to around 75
or 80
the suspension gets extremely smooth and even *more* quiet than before.
Mine would chirp the tires when I hit passing gear while running at
45mph or
so -

Parts are expensive - IMHO of course - and finding someone who know
what
they're doing can be difficult.
And don;t forget it's over 34 years old -

If I win a lottery I'll buy another one -

2007-02-02 Thread R A Bennell
Reminds me of the Garrison Keiller (spelling?) routine or comment or whatever
you want to call it about people
being so proud that they had never gone anywhere. I'm not sure but I think it
was in one of the Lake Wobygon
(spelling again?) books where he talks about some fellow who was so proud of
his old car with no miles on it.

You sort of have to wonder how he could have an 84 with that few miles on it.

However, having said that, I have to admit that I have a 68 Chevy pickup that I
have owned for more than 20 years.
In that time I have only put about 14K miles on it. It was never a daily
driver. It was a backup vehicle and a
hauler when we needed to pickup something. It sat beside the garage for most of
the time during all of those years
and now it is sitting out at the lake because I don't have enough room for it
at home.

I suspect (more likely, *hope*) there are lots of people like this who

Pull the head now and check. You can replace a bent rod for less if
you catch it in time.
The current revision of the head gasket is a good thing to have
anyway. The original ones have a tendency to fail and blow oil into
the #1 cylinder.

I would not recommend this car to anyone not willing to get their hands dirty.

I like electric cars, I've driven both the Fiat and the Nissan Leaf, liked 'em
both although I probably like the Leaf a little more. The Leaf is much bigger
than the Smart, more like the size of a Golf. It was reasonably peppy, quiet
and not at all a rattly deathtrap. If they were similarly priced I'd always go
to the larger car. IMHO the Smart is wy overpriced, under featured and
under mileage.

Ugh, no. Lease a brand new one. Think about how far electric cars have come in

It's too soon to buy an all electric. There just aren't enough places to
recharge if you run out of watts.
I have a very "green" friend whose Prius wasn't green enough to suit him, so he
bought a Leaf for his wife to drive to work in the fast bus lane since
electrics are were allowed there.
Then the county, in its infinite wisdom,

2015-11-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Depends on where you live. I could drive from my house to NYC with no problem,
plenty of charging stations along 91, 84 and 95. I could drive to the airport
which would be close to the limit of my range but theres charging ports (with
preferential parking) at the airport.
If I could get my employer to install a 220v charging port at the office I
could make my 60 mile one way commute pretty decently during the summer. In the
depths of winter it might be a stretch. My wife could easily do her 20 mile
round trip...
A friend of mine in LA has an electric Fiat, she pays around $100/mo for it,
had to put $3,000 down but the state gave her half back. Overall she'll have
the car 3 years and pay about $5000 total, all the service (minimal) is
included in the lease. Thats not bad for a brand new car, if I could get that
deal I'd have one. Sadly the Fiat electric is west coast only.

The real question is why anyone would do a commute of even 20 miles for
any length of time.
I have moved my office 5 times in the past 20 years and every time has
been closer to home.
Our home was initially bought in a location within a mile of my wife's
workplace.

I think the furthest that I commuted on a daily basis is maybe 10 miles.
My office is now within a mile of home.
Think of the time and money that is wasted on a long daily commute.

I could do that. My commute is less than 40 miles round trip.

We don't have chargers here, but I could probably shame the commissioners into

The result was that, after running out of watts several times on her way back
from work, she started driving the Prius again.
Volts do not have the hated Toyota technology, and they seem to be reliable
with few repairs. Most other hybrids lease hybrid technology from Toyota.

Re: [MBZ] wow

2015-11-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Some of us don't want to live in the city. My wife does a much bigger business
where her office is than she would 10 miles over in our little town.
Theres no work in TV anywhere near where we live but I like living in a little
town and my house was MUCH cheaper (probably $100,000) than one within 10 miles
of my office.
If you want to go down this road then why would anyone with a commute 10 miles
or less drive a gas powered car? Totally environmentally irresponsible, an
electric car would use less fuel, warm up the cabin faster, experience less
wear and last better.
When I first graduated from college I commuted 1.5 miles and was frequently
late for work. Now I go 60 miles each way and I'm rarely late. I also
appreciate the "me time" I get during my commute. On the other hand I get a LOT
of "me time" and I'd be just as happy with half as much ;)

The real question is why anyone would do a commute of even 20 miles for
any length of time.
I have moved my office 5 times in the past 20 years and every time has
been closer to home.
Our home was initially bought in a location within a mile of my wife's
workplace.
I think the furthest that I commuted on a daily basis is maybe 10 miles.
My office is now within a mile of home.
Think of the time and money that is wasted on a long daily commute.

Randy,

Not to mention that short drives that don't fully warm up the engine and
transmission oils are a sure path to rapid wear and death of the vehicle.
The late Dr. MB opined that once the coolant temperature is normal
operating temperature, another fifteen minutes of driving were required to
get the oils fully warmed up to drive out the moisture.

My daily commute is about 15 miles, about 25-30 minutes. In my opinion
this is just barely long enough to warm up the oils. If my commute were
shorter, I'd be switching to a gasser that warms up quickly.

My commute is 36 miles, almost equally divided between surface streets and
highway (65 mph). On really good days, it's under 25 minutes. Worst case, it's
35.

Just enough time to catch the news and a podcast. This American Life is one
day's commute worth of listening.

If I were in Florida that might be almost enjoyable, but I am not.

My commute in the mornings normally takes about an hour. Most of that is
consumed having coffee with the boys at the DQ about half way to the office.
Did I mention that I can drive it in about 7 minutes and most days, I go
home for lunch. I can walk it in about 16 minutes overland accross the
field at the University and sometimes do in better weather.

There is that but I do not drive the diesel in winter and the majority
of the time and miles on the truck is highway travel to and from the
lake (350 miles round trip) or Grand Forks ND (250 miles round trip)
plus I run Mobil1 in the truck so I am not too worried about it. I use
the command start to warm up the truck in the cold weather and keep it
plugged in as well so it gets mostly warmed up.

I could have a 7 minute commute if I wished, but that would mean I would have
to live in a hipster-infested high rise surrounded by Java joints selling $6
cups of coffee.

Oh, and I used to have a four to five minute commute some years ago. I hated it
because my car never got warmed up (when I chose to drive it rather than walk.)

No thanks. I like my commute. Gives me some quiet time in between home and
work. And I do enjoy driving my car, even if it has no soul.

Looking at that reminds me of when my friend's mom got plowed into when she

"lickered up bubba" noticed neither the stop sign nor her car. He was in a

e.g. 300SE L 3.5 and 300SE L 6.3

109 has air suspension, 108 is spring, doenst matter if its long or
short wheel base. There are lwb 108's. I do think all, well I know
all, 109s are long though.

The 109 has a bigger engine.
Also it is possible to tell the chassis model from the VIN. This works with
motors too.

also had a Becker GP radio with the search bar. Too cool for words... Sold

does it have the big mud flaps on it?
