Yeah I was amazed when I moved to Minnesota and first saw this - amazed that
it's legal!

I would sometimes, on my drive back from school, see a mail carrier doing
about 60 down a curvy mountain road driving from the passenger seat.

Yes, I am required to drive on the wrong side of the road to deliver papers.
If I refused, I'd be fired.
As for unsafe: I do it as safely as I can, unlike almost every other paper
delivery drive I have ever seen - maniacs. The fact that they are paid by
paper delivered, and not the hour adds to the problem.

Who requires you to drive in an unsafe manor?

Who will be responsible for any accident you are in or cause?

Your employer has at least attempted to distance him self from
 liability.

Do you have a whole bunch of insurance?

Have you notified your insurance company you are using the car during
the course of business? In an unsafe manor?

I believe rural mail carriers are required to drive on the right.
Around here, they sit in the passenger seat while driving.
Saturn offers (or used to offer) RHD cars to postal workers, but I don't
know anybody who ever bought one. I also don't remember if station wagons
were available that way. A RHD Saturn Wagon with diesel-electric drivetrain
would probably be the ultimate rural route vehicle. A 5hp engine would be
more than adequate with help from regenerative braking.

Re: [MBZ] Wagon overload, you asked for it..

Nearly all of our mail carriers are contractors, and
they drive a wide range of vehicles. For example:

Jeep (regular)

USPS auction mail carrier Jeep (the little white
square things)

RHD Subaru wagon (yes, you can buy them here)

F150 Ford pickup

I have to elaborate on the old Ford pickup - it's an
aging F150 that's a real rustbucket, driven by a
Hispanic woman who is very nice. It has an ingenious
dual steering wheel setup with a dummy steering
wheel on the right side that is coupled to the real
steering wheel by a series of sprockets and chains,
like a bicycle would use. A real marvel of backyard
engineering, IMHO. I haven't seen what sort of pedal
arrangement it has, mainly because the last time I saw
her I was so amazed by the steering wheel setup I was
engrossed with it and didn't bother looking at
anything else.
