Which is probably why Mercedes uses offset crashes to test the integrity
of their cars' protection.

Well, the repair estimate just by walking around the car and using "used,
reconditioned, or aftermarket" parts came to $14,500, so I guess it is
worse than it looks.  Apparently an offset crash like that is particularly
difficult to straighten out.

On the upside, I settled with the insurance company on Friday after more
contretemps than should be necessary, and purchased a one-owner 2009
Bluetec with the same mileage for less than I got for my 2007.  We pick it
up in Texas on Saturday.

on Hall Street, which is a sort of a Fury Road-meets-depressed Midwestern
industry speedway.

I live in St Charles, and the River is an effective protective rampart
against the crime and dysfunction.

of the car and its bits would not have been affected, might be worth 
buying it back if you could knock them down on the price of the hulk.

told them to source a comparable '95, which they could not do locally.  
Valuation went from $4500 (2013) petrol car to $9600 when they found a car in 
OK that met the bill.  The valuation adjustment took it from totalled to 
repairable.

[MBZ] Wrecked E320

So the E320 Bluetec is a probable total after some jerk ran a stop sign on
Saturday. I'm a little sore but okay.

The adjuster had asked if I'd like to retain the car, and I'm thinking
about it since I'd  like to replace it with the same model,  and especially
since two weeks ago I spent over $1000 on tires, a steering angle sensor,
and maintenence.

Questions for those who have done this sort of thing: I am thinking I could
strip most of the trim, black boxes, and accessories from the car over a
weekend and eBay it over the next few months for easy money - what am I
missing? Pull the engine complete, or pull injectors, turbo, intake, etc
and list piecemeal? Not sure I have room to pull an engine in the garage.
And finally, am I delusional or is this an economically viable weekend(s)
activity? I do have plenty of room in the basement to store everything.

Sorry to hear about your loss. The 1998 S420 is still going strong at 281k - 
maybe I can talk oldest son to make you a deal on it?

I just did this with my former S500 coupe.  Since I know W140s pretty well, I 
had a good idea of what the most desirable parts were, which helped. I used 
eBay and other sources such as Benzworld, to sell a lot of stuff. I went 
through and made a very expansive list in a PDF with part numbers and 
descriptions to post in the various forums.

I sold about $2500 worth of parts from the car so far. Most went in the first 
few weeks. I really hurt myself with shipping costs on some of the larger 
interior parts unique to the coupe, like door cards, mainly because shipping 
and boxing was really expensive.

Out of that, I probably spent $500-$700 in fees and shipping/handling costs. 
Considering the car cost me $3k three years ago, I figure I came out OK. I 
would also add that I got another $200 for the remains from a recycler, and I 
saved a number of parts common to my other W140s and R129 that I have on the 
shelf as spares.

I will warn you that this takes a significant investment in time and effort, so 
if you put a value on your time it might not be worth it. Check prices 
carefully - I figured that the electronic modules in the "coffin" would be 
worth a lot, for example - they're not, maybe $25-$50/each and they don't sell 
well as they're a lot of them on the market.

I don't know your car or model well, so I can't reflect on whether it would be 
worth it or not. Suffice to say if you have the time and want to make the 
effort it can be done, but the actual benefits of doing so might be marginal.

I still have a large number of parts sitting in a box and on a shelf in my 
garage. As time goes on and it's clear they're unlikely to sell, I'm tossing 
them in the trash to regain the space.

I've never done what you're contemplating, but if the replacement is the same 
model and you can store either the entire car or the parts, I'd try to keep as 
much as possible.  Selling off bits might recover some money, but I'd rather

your heels.

the car for $3052 and maybe I lack vision, but I just don't see 4,000
"easy" dollars in it. I'm not very interested in eBaying a bunch of small
parts at $20 a throw.

This is good advice. I went to urgent care shortly after and checked out
okay. Of course, my neck is so full of osteoarthritis already that I wonder
how much I'd notice a small injury. Strangely an ambulance didn't show at
the scene even though a passenger in the other car had a bleeding cut on
his forehead. This did happen in the Detroit part of town, so services
expectations are pretty low.

I built a pretty good rapport with the adjuster over the phone yesterday,
and he told me today that he recorded it as a condition 1 when he went to
inspect it this afternoon, so that helps. But I haven't received a
settlement offer yet, either, so we'll see.

The HAY sonata is a pretty decent car, except that they too have gone 
to the Toada death "push and pray" system in place of a real key. 
unfortunately dogde has too.  I would have thought with all the 
successful suits against toada for killing people with "push and 
pray" that all mfgrs would have gone back to real keys, but not so.


The elantra and smaller HAY undis are Ps o S!

Tell your adjuster you want an MB rental, as you had an MB, then get 
em to spring for a sonata or better.

doesn't stink.  If there is any ozone generator, the insco should pay 
for that!


Tom, are you dealing with your insco (uninsured) or the other guy's 
(insured)?  That can make a difference.

Yeah, unless there are some really unusual or desirable parts there, you’re 
never going to get out out of it what you’ll have in it in time and effort 
alone.

Keep squeezing the insurance company for a nice payoff and buy something

The adjuster told me today to fax in all recent receipts and he'll see what
he can do; it sounded pretty promising. I installed new OE wiper blades
last week and nabbed them when I went to get my plates and personal items
this evening, so I have forty bucks back already.

adjuster increased the offer by half the cost of the tires, the theory being
that the average car had half gone tires, so a car with brand new tires was
worth an extra half the value of the tires. BTW, dad was quite impressed at the
shop they have at Tire Rack's main store in South Bend.

Glad you are ok, but if you have not already, get checked out by a 
doc.  Some things don't show up until later.


If you replace the car with one of the same type, then having spare 
parts is a great advantage.  I had a spare hood and grille for 35 
years and never needed it.  I looked at it as murphy's insurance.  If 
you have the part you will never need it.  Makes for reliability and 
getting bypassed by the drunks/wackos who run stop signs/lights.
