Re: [MBZ] mbz Damn update
I'll second that. When I was stationed in Italy in the late '90s, I bought a '79 528i with 5 spd manual - that car positively screamed. Unfortunately it also broke down regularly and I didn't speak enough Italian to find the local equivalent of Rusty. I did have a great local mechanic though, Vincenzo, who was very fast and very very cheap. When I brought him the car for the second minor repair, he told me that this car was not a good car and to expect more trouble. 3rd repair (more major), Vincenzo says This is a bad car, you should look for a new car. 4th repair (something broke inside the tranny), he asks me how much I paid for the car ($2000) to which he replied sell the car and if you get half that consider yourself lucky. The transmission repair involved removing the tranny and opening it up to figure out what was wrong, going to junkyard and getting required part, install/put back together/install in car/refill the oil. My total bill was $175; I threw in a pack of smokes and a bottle of jack. After repairs #5 and #6 (hey that car was REALLY fast and my Italian red-headed girlfriend loved it) I did sell the car (for $2000 to some Greek officer who was thrilled to get it) and bought a Alfa sedan for $500, and it never broke down on me. Re: [MBZ] mbz Damn update
In this case, it was really a matter of the treatment of each of the cars. The BMW came from Sicily and was not well kept mechanically but the exterior and interior were fantastic. The Alfa came from northern Italy (where they speak German as well as Italian) and it was well cared for. I think that Alfa at that point in time was also making decent quality cars (early '80s, I think the car was an '82). It had a 2 liter 4 cyl with double overhead cams and dual carbs; decent mileage and could cruise at 150 kph all day long. 5 speed tranny located at rear axle, handled like a dream. This particular model was very popular with the mafia, and when I drove the car with authority people tended to get out the way in a hurry, which the girl friend thought was hilarious. Well, I still have two hours to wait. I decided to try the quiksteel epoxy. I am waiting for it to cure and then I can drive the car around this little town and see if it holds. Put a few bucks and some time into the BMW, and I'm sure you'll be pleased with it. It's a big strong car that will go lots and lots of miles if given the same attention and care as a similar vintage mercedes would require. Reminds me of orientation when I worked as an aide at a mental hospital - never argue with the patients. Consider this: you have more than a few MBs with big problems - a 140 that has or will have bent rods, another 140 with serious engine problems, a slew of other MBs that require significant and extensive repairs. The Repairs today to my car cost $11. Even when I do have to replace the radiator, it will cost me less than $200. Plus, the car has 160,000 miles that's not too bad for a plastic radiator. Aren't there several MBs that have $1000 radiators? Sorry for the rant. Donald H Snook -- OK Don Pair of W124 300D 2.5 Turbos -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
