We have hawks that get the chicken of the trees regularly. Saw one snag one off
the top of a fence last year. A beautiful thing.

pack a pistol.

Re: [MBZ] worse than a moose friday

2017-12-29 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Wily and company are everywhere. We used to hear the pack nightly in
Awa. Any cat that ventured outside was eaten, except for old
snaggletooth. We figgered she lost part of her lip tangling with
coyotes, but she bloodied them and got away. She was the scaggliest cat
I ever saw, but no mouse or vole (or free meal) escaped her. The lazy
cats that hung around the barn and waited to be fed survived, the ones
who hunted, died, except for Snaggletooth. Kind of a reverse Darwin.
In the end a pit bull killed her, probably because she was not afraid of
dogs.

Either the coyote hunters decimated the pack or they moved on. I hit
one several times at long range with 40 grain LR. It was hilarious. It
was so dark I really could not see much, but I'd shoot, then could hear
the plop when the 40 grains hit; apparently hit it in the a$$. The
coyote would chase its tail and I'd laugh because it did so little
damage that they coyote only chased its tail. After a few nights of
that, that particular coyote took a different route in the evening. It
must have been about 1000 feet, as the delay was close to a second. I
think the tail chasing happened twice and other times I hit elsewhere.
At any rate, it was hilarious to watch ol wily chase its tail.

Mitch's neighbor's experience makes a case for 17 before reloading. I
can see where a pack could number 15-20. Other than a sandrat attack,
(or the kind 'bummer's buddies did in the 70s) I don't see need for
popos to pack 16 or 17.

Yotes everywhere. Black bear are more isolated.

My neighbor quit going on walks after she met up with a pack of 'yotes
about a mile from home. (yeah, they don't work in packs, except when
they do)
Her strongest memory of the meeting is the perception that they
weren't at all afraid of her. But she was afraid of them.
I hear their group sing-a-longs at night 2-3 times a month. Haven't
actually seen on in this neighborhood, yet. Beginning to think I
should be less lazy about arming myself around home. The neighbor's
story hit close to home, where she met them is near the far end of my
dog walking range.

Trouble is getting a clean shot before it gets you.  I think the folks
here called a gator wrangler who snagged it and hauled it off, they have
to be killed as once they settle on a place they will come back.  Not
sure what happens to the carcass but that would make some nice boots and
a few pounds of tail meat.  I could probably find a dozen of them within
a mile of the vast estate, if not more, but not right now.  (Up the road
a bit there are some old rice ponds that have some 12 footers that hang
around)  Hell I had one in the marsh out by the garage a few years back,
bellowing for a girlfriend.  My neighbor's worker had a little one last
year he got from my neighbor's pond, he was cutting up the tail, it had
been eyeing the dogs a bit too longingly...

I hear there are bears and coyotes in Michigan. And the deer around here are

You do have to watch out for the occasional armadillo, however. Those things
will mess up the underside of your car bad if you try to run over them.
