I've got class 8pm to 1am next week which I hate. I'll be tired but it will be
hard to sleep at 1 and I probably won't be able to sleep much past 8. Gonna try
to get a nap each afternoon...

Re: [MBZ] 240D

2024-07-19 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
The young fella called me and said he wasn’t expecting to get a call on it.
Labels himself a “Mercedes Enthusiast” and he was really surprised how good of
shape it’s in. Starts right up, drives, stops, “sounds right”. He said one of
his ham-handed underlings punched the hole in the grill.
He told me I will likely be the old person there to check it out since nearly
100% of the people he deals with want late model Hondas and Toyotas.
He said he will meet me at the gate in the morning and he’s glad it “will be
going to someone who knows what it is.”
Slow your roll, hot rod. Let me at least look at it first.

No. There are special pencil-style plugs that fit in the old loop-style holes.

Did you need a different controller for pencil plugs or could you just rewire
them?

When I bought Dwight's '78 240D it had been cleverly converted to pencil plugs
by installing pencil plugs and adding a button on the dash that triggered a
Ford starter solenoid. Unfortunately whoever had wired it still series wired
the plugs and with only 10ga wire I don't think the forward most one was
heating up much. Used to have to hold the button for 30-40 seconds for good
starting.

I made new wires from the relay to each plug, still in 10ga and a heavy, iirc
6ga wire from the relay to the battery. After that one melted on the exhaust
manifold and made an exciting show of sparks I added an inline fuse too, well
after I replaced the wire.

Went from 30-40 seconds of preheat required to 10-15...

I have posted photos before of a set of ramps that I made out of 3/4"
plywood. I didn't invent them. They were a plan in a car magazine way
back when. I made a taller set back in the early 70's that I used with a
pickup truck to get it higher. In the 80's or 90's I made another set
with a more gradual slope to permit me to drive our then Taurus or Sable
onto them and not take out the front spoiler. The other advantage of
them is that being a more gradual slope, it is much easier for the car
to climb them.

Re: [MBZ] 240D 4-speed

2021-05-11 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Hi John,
It’s not terribly difficult can you definitely need the car raised up a bit
to get under it. It’s something that’s pretty straightforward on a lift,
so any competent shop should be able to do it if your not up for it. Just
be sure genuine MB parts are used. Lots of shops cut corners and use
little pieces of fuel hose, etc instead of waiting for the correct parts.

The bushings in the shifter itself can be done from inside the car, but not
the ones are the shift rods which are most important

Good luck,
Jaime

I think Jamie is right. My '85 190D had some weird shifter issues, it's been a

Most likely the bushings on each end of the shift rods (there are three of
them, so 6 bushings) are probably gone.  This causes the levers on the

bushing in the shifter itself that can contribute to the problem.  Best
action is to order up all the bushings from the classic center and spend a
weekend rebuilding everything.  You'll be surprised by how nice it can all
be when repaired properly.

Welcome back John.

Could be bushings, but hard to say. I locked up a manny trying to install
fresh bushings. Should have been more careful about not letting the
transmission end arms move. With wiggly play in the rods, sometimes two gears
can become engaged. I had to secure a fresh working trans to swap in. Never
did get the locked up one torn down and rebuilt.

Part of the starter. Back in the day we called it a "Bendix" on old Chevy's,
because that's who made them.

The clutch is replaceable, but you have to take the starter off to get to it.
It's part of the drive gear.

Yup, if you quit before it starts it gets progressively harder on each retry.
Give it everything it's got on that one try.

I started my 300D a few year back with a weak engine (420k miles) doing that,
it took about a minute before it was actually running on it's own.  Lotta white
smoke that turned gray and then black and then fully running.

You don't use much battery power when it's partially firing, each round gets
the pre-chamber hotter until the fuel burns properly.

Don't forget to put the go pedal to the floor and crank until it starts or
quits. My 83 240D would start pretty well down to about -10F. That first winter
I drove that car we had a week of -20F every frickin night. That was when I
figured out that a 400W inverter would power the block heater...
Interestingly the Pisten Bully starting procedure is copied from MB which is
unsurprising I suppose with an MB engine. The ASV is strange and starts harder
if I hold the go pedal but it does want to be held at high idle for a minute or
two right after starting.

When I do that on my W116 300SD, the starter disengages after about 10
seconds and seems to just spin free. So it must have a weak solenoid?
