Interesting that you would suggest that, however, the S500 has narrower aspect tires on it. And welcome back! Do you have the BMW back, or is your signature out of date? The S500 is a 95 with conventional ignition. The S420 is a 98 with electronic ignition. I find it difficult to believe that the different ignition systems would make that much difference. S500s are pretty common, but S420s are not. A lot of S500 beaters, although you do see the occasional diamond in the rough. There is a guy over in Clearwater who has been trying to sell a mid 90s S500 sedan with low miles, service records, ICE COLD air, etc., for something like $1500. Only problem is the front passenger door is caved in. No other obvious damage than the door skin. Looks like a fairly easy fix with either a new door skin or door. I've been tempted, but my driveway is full and I have a tuition payment for the youngest coming up in January I like the S420 because you get nearly all the amenities of an S500 with better gearing that gives you more economical operation. Sadly I think it probably is a scam. I can't think of any way someone is making money buying W123s at $2K and shipping them overseas. They just aren't worth it. Make sure your expectations are low if you give the vehicle to a charity. Tax laws have tightened up significantly in this area. My local NPR station takes anything and everything as far as vehicles, boats, etc. When I was there last year I was talking to one of their fundraising people about it (I used to volunteer there reading books for the blind) and they told me they use a service to dispose of the donations. If I understood it correctly, and Mitch may weigh in here, you get nothing up front and then when the service sells the vehicle you get credit for the actual selling price. He said they had a few members who donated nice older cars that brought very little, and the donors were not happy about it. I’m sure other charitable organizations are doing the same. Expect them to sell it for $500-2000 in a charity auction, I'm guessing $1200ish. For quite a while, I think since 2005 or so, you get to deduct what they sold it for. If they don't sell it, but use it towards their tax exempt charitable purpose (like giving it to a destitute person so he can drive it to work) then you can still deduct the FMV, whatever number you think you can support as 'fair' if challenged on it. I have gotten less than $499 twice, once on a 115 with nothing visibly wrong with it (non-seized engine was disclosed of course), and later on a then ten-year-old Volvo wagon with 140kmi. From the receipts I gather the hauling service is allowed to convert cars to parts if they choose, and then assign a sale value of their own choosing... which somehow turns out to be less than $499 regardless of vehicle. I'm sure this varies by area, but I'm reasonably comfortable saying the haulers in this area make a great profit by collecting cars for non-profits and then turning over as little money as possible to them. On the other hand we do get a lot of nice cars in the junkyards, which are coincidentally run by the same folks... I reduced the asking price to $2,500 and was offered $2,000 last week. The offer came from a buyer who said he ships these turbodiesel vehicles overseas. He came to look at the vehicle so it's doesn't appear to be a scam. One last time I put it on the list at the new price. If the offers fall through I will find a worthy charity and get a tax deduction. If it's some kind of cashiers check from an out-of-town bank, or for more than the amount and they ask for change, it's counterfeit. 99 percent of the the time sellers are lying when they brag about a standing offer for more than I am willing to pay.. I’m not going to challenge this, but I’ve seen the “I have a standing offer of $ for this, so if you don’t offer me more I have a plan B so many times it’s become tiresome. I was trying to buy an S420 off a guy in Johnson City, TN a few months ago and he kept pulling this line. The standing offer kept getting smaller and smaller. He also had someone who would trade him a late model Subaru for it, too, but that never seemed to materialize. He sold it nearly two months later, but I don’t know the selling price, nor do I care. I made him a fair offer and he just wanted to jerk me around with all of his offers and trades that never happened. The rust-free shells, or any W123s for that matter, are getting harder to find out here.
