Got it!

I finally figured out I had a T connector i was using with the (HF Not

After I changed that the electric/vacuum switch by 107 was good, as
was the rest of the line back to the start in front of the firewall.
The number 107: "vacuum element for leg room flap" holds no vacuum, so
that is the culprit. Guess I'll ask Tom Hanson at the classic Center
the cost of that and the door lock pod.

BTW, the book does not show the vacuum/electric switch for 107. Both

Broke out the books finally:

the diagram at 80-900 shows 3 vacuum components for 123.1, but it
does not identify them or their function.

80.4-901/2 Diagram identifies and shows 3 vac components.
104: vacuum rotary switch for recirculating air flap
105:vacuum pull switch for leg room air flap
106: vacuum element for circulating air flap
107: vacuum element for leg room flap

104 and 105 appear to be the same unit according to the diagram.
They are all related to air conditioning. The air conditioning does
not work, and I don't anticipate resurrecting air cond in the next
few years. Driving with the windows down works for me, as long as
the heater works!

So I think I will put Humpty back together again, and let it be. I
have no appetite for a evapectomy size job. I'll RTFM a little more
to see if I find anything more. It appears that this is the first
time i opened the books since 2003, according to the envelope I used
as a bookmark. This car has only travelled 1000 mi in the last 5
years, and not much more than 2000 in the last 12 years or so.

So as you all know, I replaced that bitch of a hose under the thermostat

new hose, no overheating. There was however a small amount of coolant loss from
the rubber o ring that goes around the tstat and keeps the housing cover from
leaking. I didn't make anything of it as that tstat has been in and out so many
times that the seal is probably compressed.

Anyway, I need to get this car to MA where it's registered so that I can have
it inspected-already received a fine in the mail. So I head off to Boston
today from Brunswick, Maine-roughly a 140 mile trip.

The car performed flawlessly, cruising at 65-70 mph, smooth, powerful, temp
holding steady even in some stop and go traffic towards the tail end of the
trip. I was so proud of the little 240D, when literally, as I pull into my
driveway the temp gauge starts rising! So weird. I pop the hood, the upper rad
hoses are super firm, coolant is dripping from rad overflow tube but my newly
replaced hose is not leaking.

Well back to square one!

Once it cools enough that you can open the rad cap - it will be
interesting to know how much coolant it has lost.

Could it have leaked enough to cause an issue?

Do you have a pressure test rig to pressurize the system and see if it
holds?

$3,000 for the set seems a bit much, since none run, one is missing an engine.

OTOH, project cars of substance... perhaps..

I would think this could actually be a good deal. Someone with the time,
space, and skill could spend some sweat equity and they would come up with two

Marionville is a small town outside of Springfield, Mo.

$3,000 for the set seems a bit much, since none run, one is missing an
engine.

"slight rust" "ran when parked" "AC blows cold" ;))

OTOH, project cars of substance... perhaps..

The 240D got loud today. Discovered the patch pipe just to the rear of
the bend in the downpipe was cracking at the weld. Further investigation
led to a thumb sized hole on the inside.

Well, it needs a new pipe...Same as it did maybe 15 years ago.

I took two hose clamps and a piece of heavy flashing that I have been
tempted to throw out several times, but saved for some reason. Put the
car up on ramps, crawled under, wrapped the flashing around, put the hose
clamps on it and tightened up the clamps.

Diesel Muffler bandaid 101. It will probably last for 5 years, then I
will replace the flashing again. That should be good until 2024.

123 Diesels are great, but I love the OM603 too!

Oh, By the way, 15 years ago, I didn't buy a new pipe. That is when the
patch pipe was welded in.

The rear spoiler (not to mention the front fender gills) is totally wrong, but
is that a reasonable facsimile of an Evolution windsplitter on the back window?

Re: [MBZ] 240D in the snow

2014-01-20 Thread Curt Raymond
A couple years ago I had to spend some time in Johnstown, PA. It was October
and snowed the whole time I was there, never snowed much but it was constant.
Johnstown is very hilly and full of old people. The old people would get going
up a hill and get scared and slow down losing all that valuable momentum, then
a lot of them would spin out.

We had a Mercury something rental car that was surprisingly excellent in the
snow...

Speaking f snow and hills -
My wife was coming home from work last year (91 300D) on fresh snow -
her tires were due for replacement but were still doing the job until
she started up a slight incline behind another car.  All was well until
the leading car decided to slow down - my wife had to do the same and
lost momentum. She was very irritated at the driver in the lead ...

Sincerely,
Larry

Re: [MBZ] 240D in the snow

2014-01-20 Thread Larry T

Speaking f snow and hills -
My wife was coming home from work last year (91 300D) on fresh snow -
her tires were due for replacement but were still doing the job until
she started up a slight incline behind another car. All was well until
the leading car decided to slow down - my wife had to do the same and
lost momentum. She was very irritated at the driver in the lead ...

Sincerely,
Larry

The drive up Rt. 1 went just fine but once I turned left onto 220N going
inland I was in for a surprise. The road had not yet been plowed and there
was about four inches of wet snow on this 20 mile long stretch full of long
and fairly steep inclines. I went with my GF and she started to get very
nervous. I made it up most of the hills just fine until about halfway into
it I hit this long steep hill. I knew I was in for trouble. I made it about
2/3 of the way up but that was it. I had no more traction. I decided to
back all the way down and try again a bit faster but not too fast as I
didn't want to end up in a ditch on the side of the road. Still no luck. I
then decided to back up slightly and try again. I made some progress a few
feet at a time then I got stuck again, backed up and repeated a couple of
times until I reached the point where the car was able to billy goat up the
hill at 1/2 mile per hour in first gear! Phew! I love this car!

Re: [MBZ] 240D Battery report

2014-01-02 Thread Dieselhead
My battery in the 300D that tested bad was from Oreally, back when
they had good prices and good warranty. It had a shipping sticker
from the warehouse dated apr, 2006 and they said I bought it in May,
2006. So it is 7 1/2 yrs old. Still started the car and seemed just
fine. I am going to see if it holds up in the tractor. It is a 6v
starter, so if the battery only has 10.x volts, it should still spin
the tractor engine fast. (grp 49)

I had a motrocraft in the escort that lasted over 8 years. (grp 49)

I never had a dieeasy last more than a year or two.

While it's not a Group 49, I bought an Autozone battery for the wife's 2005
Mazda 6s in 2009 or 2010 and Autozone has replaced it twice without prorating
the cost. Beats me why, but the first time it wasn't that old, maybe a year
and a half, and the second time was maybe six months ago. It died on her, she
got the car jumped and went right to an Autozone (smart girl!)

She said she just pulled in, told them their battery was dead, they tested it
and popped a new one in in a matter of minutes. No charge.

A little browsing at Autozone shows that most of their batteries are now "H8",

That 1/16" might be a problem in some cars, like W201. It's a wrestling match

This is probably not your problem but ...

I once had a 79 300TD (non turbo) with the single alternator belt. After an
alternator R&R the belt kept getting loose, and quickly too. So much so
that I had a battery charging problem. It turned out the problem was a burr
on the alternator pulley which was chewing rubber off the belt (this was a
self-inflicted problem). I filed off and polished out the burr and never
had another problem.

Keeping a Benz out of the salt is never a bad thing, but I'd check to
make sure you have good pulleys and that you are not missing a spacer
under the one on the alternator or something -- verify that the belt
runs exactly true.

Might pull the swivel bolt and make sure it's not badly worn, too, as
this would cause the alternator to sit at an angle to the belt. That
will wear it out in no time.

Also worth checking for something silly like a water pump pulley
installed wrong way 'round -- this was eating the serpentine belt on
my brother's 300E, it was just about exactly one rib offset.

Why is this happening?

 >>Sent from my MBPhone

I have tried to use continental belts and never really had a problem
with belt squeal on 240Ds.

Loose, broken brackets or adjusters could be the cause, although by
1980 the brackets were robust and didn't break.

Did someone put a high amp alternator on it? The 300D turbo has a
higher amp alternator. That would/could cause the single belt to
slip.

if none of the above, then worn pulley/pulleys are likely the
culprit. The alt pulley would be the more likely culprit.

Since the belt is 5 yrs old, try a new belt, but DO look at the wear
points in the pulleys. the sides should be straight. If there are
grooves worn in the sides of the pulleys, replace.

Your alternator is going bad -- my old 22D did that, and when I took
it in to get it fixed (it eventually stopped charging well) all I got
back was the case. Bearings were shot and the rotor was eating the
stator, caused huge amounts of drag and therefore wearing the belt out.

Which reminds me, didn't the 300D have a double belt to the alternator? I've
always wondered why but this could explain it I suppose. Maybe they figured
240D owners ought to be doing more maintenance?

No additional data - huh? So all we know is a OM616 that the belt
slips.

What year?

What style tensioner? (rack and pinion, or "L" bolt)

What have you tried?

Is the mount straight?

Is the alternator pulley warped?

Is the crankshaft pulley secure?
