I believe so, yes. Others will disagree, particularly those with

The substitutes will work, but they have advantages and disadvantages.
You can't add a substitute to existing R12... have to vacuum it all out
and replace with the substitute. They are usually blends, which means
if you do have a leak you have to vacuum out and start over (except for
Jim C. who blends his on the fly!). The blends are also usually
flammable, which some people use as a negative point. IIRC, either R134
or R12 is flammable anyway so it doesn't really much matter. The blends
also stop working above a certain ambient temperature (~100)... so if it
is really toasty where you live they won't work. The replacements *are*
cheaper than 12 though...

Just get your EPA609 certification ($15, online, open book test) and get
two or three cans on ebay for about $15 a can. Really not all that more
expensive than R134.

I have no vested interest in maintaining an AC servicing monopoly... I
just live in the south and like cold A/C!!

Can you trust an eBay seller of R12, though? I'd be leery that the
cans had been relabled and actually contained whatever-ethane. Maybe
if they have some kind of factory seal like the Microsoft holograms on
genuine Windows CDs (not that those can't be forged, too, but
apparently it's a little bit of reassurance).

I believe the taxes make current legal prices around $850./ pound - making

I love the Gaz d' Cathey method precisely because I can top-up R12
"on-the-fly". I just did my once a year top-up in the Vanagon (~$7), and
recorded 33 degree vent temps in the front. Vanagons have the evaporator
hung from the ceiling in the rear, with a long channel of ductwork carrying
the cool air all the way forward. It's a small miracle that I get any
coolness factor at all, let alone near freezing temps up there. As an
aside, one thing I really dig about the overhead design is that I can train
one of the vents to blow on the backside of my head and neck--very cool.

Hey, my mom has a Vanagon with that system. I always thought that
even if it doesn't cool all that well, at least you can get at the
evaporator easily if it leaks! But where's the condensor, I wonder?
In the front with the radiator? Are there R-12 pipes running under
the car alongside those ridiculously long coolant lines that always
leak?

With outlet temperatures that low, your evaporator temperature is most
likely less than 32 F, which means if you get any moisture, you'll freeze
up your evaporator and then get no cooling because air can't flow through
the evaporator.

Looks like some of you got good Vanagons. Mine was supposed to be a very
nice model, but quickly was named 'The Anti-Christ' and continued to earn
that name for the year I had it. I think the door handles worked pretty
well, but other than that about all I can say is it didn't kill me.

Hey, my mom has a Vanagon with that system. I always thought that even if
it doesn't cool all that well, at least you can get at the evaporator easily
if it leaks! But where's the condensor, I wonder?
In the front with the radiator? Are there R-12 pipes running under the car
alongside those ridiculously long coolant lines that always leak?

I have augmented a failing R12 system with propane. (I found
that the Schrader valve was loose, explaining the loss.)

No. But you will eventually. I use gauges, and when the pressures
just don't work out and it doesn't cool right I just vacuum and start
over.

Sounds much better!! ;-) Thats almost exactly in line with eBay prices
when you take into account shipping and that a can is only 12oz...

That would be my guess... if you don't have gauges, etc. I don't think
a mechanic would charge it per Jim's method anyway (not that there is
anything wrong with it, but I just don't think they would).

IMO, I wouldn't worry about it if the can looks old. I can understand
the new cans being relabeled, but I think making a can look old is more
difficult than just relabeling something. I'm not a fraud expert though ;)

G'luck!

How correct you are. Loved the movie, though their little vehicle was a

Actually I think the reference was to the small, slow, hard to start vehicle
that was used to rescue the folks when the Land Rover was up a tree. The
name just fit so well for that 4 wheel torture device I had - Vanagon GL, if
memory serves.

It's been a long time since I saw that movie, but I believe the
only vehicles in it were the Land Rover 88 series II, some
Toyota pickups, an the bus like thing the safari guide fellow
drove.

Didn't it have a Jeep-like thing that was "driven" by an African
non-driver with humorous results?

Yup. That was probably the Land Rover driven by the bushman.
