I liked it back in the old days when car diesel pumps were way off by
themselves separate from the regular gas pumps. You could pull in and out easy.
Now days diesel pumps are right there with the gas pumps and you have gas car
people pulling into the line where the diesel pumps are rather than pulling to
the lines where there are no diesel pumps causing diesel drivers to wait. In

Notably, the fuel filler on my 1997 Dodge (w/Cummins) will accept the large
nozzle.
I've filled up at those islands many a time. My dad's 1990 Ford could not.

The Dodge T-Rex (not to be confused with the TRX) would have qualified,
if made in diesel. Sadly, never made it to production!

I hade to fuel my 300D at a truck pump once. It was an odd little gas station
in some rural area and the only diesel they had was at a truck pump. Definitely
fills the tank quickly. The cashier was a little surprised to see a diesel sale
of less than 20 gallons.

In a word, no. However, if it were possible, you would be using extra fuel to
drag the extra axle around, thereby causing more noxious emissions, also

Road trip yesterday I saw diesel pushing $6, regular over $4 many places
though it was $3.71 locally, cheaper at Costco. Stopped for gas at same
station on way up then way back, price for premium went up $0.06 in a
few hours

The auto box or the larger size of the Passat is seriously hurting mileage.
Last week to PA and back my Jetta consistently turned in 51+mpg. We took it
fairly easy on the way down but I flogged it on the way back. IIRC on the way
down we did 51.7 on the way back it was more like 51.2. Traffic was pretty
heavy both ways.

This summer I'd like to run it up north and see what 2 hours (Bangor to
Houlton, Maine) at 65mph would give.

savings driving a diesel any more. The higher energy content of the diesel fuel

I don't think any marque is offering diesel passenger cars in the USA any more.
We can probably thank VW for that. GM killed the passenger diesel engine in the
late 1970s/early 1980s, and VW killed whatever recovery there had been with
their emissions cheats.

I still like my OM617s for their simplicity and reliability but would never buy
a new diesel with all the blue tech crap. They cost more, won't save any money
on fuel and are more prone to problems.

The only sensible reason to buy a new diesel today is in a truck where you need

The worst I can remember from pre 2010 was a $64 tank of premium.
That was probably 3.59 on less than 18 gallons when premium was 0.50
more than regular.
In late 2011/early 2012 I paid $4-4.30 for premium, regular was $0.60

So now regular is slightly more than premium peaked at ten years ago.
