Re: [MBZ] Disc Brakes- Change Pads and Rotors?
They are, every third set of pads, without fail so far. MB uses fairly thin rotors to reduce unsprung mass, frequent replacement is the trade-off. Given how well the brakes work, I have no problem. A set of rotors every 100,000 miles doesn't strike me as unreasonable. Peter
Re: [MBZ] Disc Brakes- Change Pads and Rotors?
The frequency of change of rotors depends greatly on the type of pad used. The more aggressive the pad the less life the rotors will have. Some places advertise lifetime brake pads - that's because the rotors are being the sacrifical item. *Something* is going to wear and if the pads are lifetime, the rotors will not be. Having said that, the pads MB sells are a compromise - they dislike dealing with constant complaints about brake squealing so they sell soft brake pads - which give off a *lot* of brake dust. But they don't squeal and the service dept doesn't have to constantly explain why they are squealing. As far as selling the rotors and pads as sets - I suspect what others said about MBs desire to maximize profits has most to do with it. But there's no need to replace the rotors unless they are below the min thickness when measured with a micrometer (the easiest IMO). For my 123 those rotors were amazingly inexpensive, too. Mercedes rotors are never to be turned. If they get warped or wear down, they are to be replaced. Royce Engler wrote: Rusty sells 'em separately, but I think the dealer will too...the underlying question is if you are having him do the pads, why does he insist on doing the rotor also. I suppose they should be turned every time you do the pads, but I generally don't. Sounds like a money robbing exercise to me Royce Engler 1985 300TD Turbo 285K -- Kaleb C. they are robbing money. Disks will last thru many sets of brake pads unless you run them down to the metal and they damage the rotor. Re: [MBZ] Disc Brakes- Change Pads and Rotors?
Benz rotors need to be replaced every third pad change (that is, you can run two sets of pads on them). They cannot be turned -- by the time you get them smooth, they are almost always too thin, and this will cause the pistons to seize in the calipers before the friction material is worn out on the older dual piston calipers. Not good Newer models go further, but on the W124 and earlier models, you can expect new pads every 30,000 miles or so depending on driving conditions and new rotors every 90,000 in the front. Rears should last at least twice as long. Peter

Friends, why does MB sell the pads and rotors together- is it a good thing to do these together? I was going to have the dealer do brake pads and he only does them together. Is this a money robbing exercise or is there some merit to changing both at the same time? It has to do with avoiding any chance of warranty callbacks. Not quite thievery, but often _completely_ unnecessary. Rotors should be replaced if they throb or are too thin or chewed up, not otherwise. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Disc Brakes- Change Pads and Rotors?
It actually is a good thing to do these together considering the cost. Chances are pad and rotor sets are cheaper than they are if sold separate. Not always necessary to replace the rotors unless you are on your second or third set of pads. Also if there is considerable wear on the rotor or its warped its best to just replace it Harry 69 280 SEL 135,000 Miles 72 350SL 118,000 Miles 2004 VW Passat 4 Motion 1999 Mazda Miata -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Sun, 12 Nov 2006 8:25 AM Subject: [MBZ] Disc Brakes- Change Pads and Rotors?
