and bought a 2014 VW Beetle TDI DIESEL Convertible with only 14K miles on it!!
I’ve been wanting a convertible for a long time now, but until a week ago, I
didn’t know it was possible to get one with an OM. I know it’s not an MB, but
it is cool! It is located down in California, so we’re working out a plan to
fly in next week and drive it up the coast back home to Oregon. I’ve only
been able to find 5 other Beetle TDI Convertibles nation wide, one in Wisconsin
and the others along the east coast. What could be better than the wind in
your face accompanied by the purr of a Diesel engine?

Kevin in Hillsboro, Oregon who won’t be Diesel-less for much longer!!

One of my favorite drives is 395 from Reno down to Mammoth Lakes or just Lee
Vining. I’ve done it many times. Once you get south of Gardnerville you’re
pretty much in the styx. Side trip on US 50 to Virginia City and also to
Bodie, of course. If you haven’t seen Bodie you’ve missed something. That is
one of the coolest places I’ve ever visited.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in (really) Northern CA in and around Reading
and Shasta, going over to Lassen to the east and as far west as Weaverville.
Had a bunch of microwave sites I did work at in those areas for Sprint. Always
wanted to get to the coast and see Crescent City and Arcata, but was never able
to make it.

I didn't care about time. We visited nephew/cousin in Palo Alto and
stayed overnight then drove through SFO somehow. FtBragg at 7pm and
then 101 heads east somehow up there. Very dark and we pulled off the
side of the road in the tall forest to sleep, large trucks passing. I
think we were in Newport about mid afternoon. It was a fun trip. I
enjoyed the slow speed many curves back inland to cross the drainages.
I would do it again and stop more often to see memorable scenery. We
were through Yellowstone the first open Saturday of the season, saw
snow and dirt roads on US20 in OR. Learned about forest fire damage
and idiocy of housing development in the forest - not unlike
floodplain developmen - also stupid. Had to detour down US395 back to
CA and enjoyed eastern OR - nice, desolate. Very few rest areas but

The drive north from LA to Newport, OR was a fun drive in 2008 in the
GayLarry '83 240D. He told us to take AmTrak to LA and we drove up to
SFCAL on interstate and 101 to Newport, OR and then turned right on
US20 and drove that all the way home. The 240D is not 3-pedal - I
hope your TDI is 3-pedal. Enjoy both the new TDI and the drive north

quite a bit quieter than, say, a 240 D.
