I have not bought any 115's in a long time, but picked one up not very
far down the road for less than $100 so I couldnt pass it up.
Supposedly it runs but fuel problem, probably old fuel. Anyway, its
pretty rought so I would imagine I will be parting it out. But, on the
way home I looked back and noticed it has the super ultra rare and
expensive manual right side mirror. Heck, that more than paid for the
whole car right there.

I paid $65 for a good, used W123 passenger's side mirror for my 3rd 1978

Kaleb,

I thought about it and will be interested.

I've owned a 1972 220D and two 1975 240Ds. I realized that the 115 body 300D
sold in this country was a one year car - it should be a 1976 model. Also,
the engine should have series glow plugs and a top mount oil filter.

Re: [MBZ] I haul home a 115 300D

2009-02-15 Thread Tom Hargrave
OK - I was thinking of the '77 300D I used to own.

I guess if I do end up with this Mercedes, it's back to 'oil down to my
elbow' every time I change the oil. If used oil really does cause cancer, my
arm would have fallen off by now. I used to deliver pizzas in my 220D &
240Ds and changed oil every month for quite a while. You learn a lot about
PM when you drive 60K+ / year in an old Mercedes!

A lot depends on what Kaleb wants to do - I really do want another old
diesel.

Re: [MBZ] I haul home a 115 300D

2009-02-15 Thread Tom Hargrave
The issue is not the oil in the pan, it’s the oil in the filter housing & a
topsider won't help there.

Anyway, I don't believe the 115 bodies were designed for topsiders. I've not
had the pan off any of the ones I owned but we did pull the lower pan off a
friends when we discovered the keeper was missing off his timing chain
master link. The dip stick tube was nowhere near the bottom of the pan.

Re: [MBZ] I haul home a 115 300D

2009-02-15 Thread Peter Frederick
I don't see what the problem is so long as the tube you put down the
dipstick tube is large enough to pull oil up through. I don't know
of ANY dipstick tubes that actually extend to the bottom of the oil
pan -- that's why you are supplied a tube when you buy the oil sucker.

I do recall him referring to the subject, but I don't recall the date he
gave. As Tom said, though, the tilted bottom-mount oil canister with pre-
and main-filters is the real problem. If one only gets one's hands and
forearms dirty while servicing it, one is doing well.

2009-02-15 Thread Redghost
I feed the thinner hose down the dip tube and have been very happy
with the amount I get out. Have not bothered to undo the bolt in the
pan to see if more goes out. Did rip the back end of the pan off once
and replaced it. Tube does go near to bottom. I get enough out that
I am putting nearly what the manual calls for in an empty block.
6.5qt with a filter change.

But like I said earlier, the issue is the oil filter housing, not the drain
plug.

Didn't Marshall say MB's have been built for removing the by suction since
sometime in the 60's?

tube is large enough to pull oil up through. I don't know of ANY
dipstick tubes that actually extend to the bottom of the oil pan --
that's why you are supplied a tube when you buy the oil sucker.

All the 'fat' MB dipsticks do. Post-197X-ish.

Re: [MBZ] I haul home a 115 300D

2009-02-16 Thread Wilton Strickland
But the dipstick tubes in the 3 MB's ('81 -'91) that I've sucked oil from go
plenty deep into the pan such that I remove more oil via suction than by
draining. You wonder how I know this? 'Cause I've removed the pan plug
from them after the first time I completed sucking from them to see if any
more oil dripped out. Not a single drop has dripped from the pan in these
tests. MB's for many years have been built to suck the oil from TOP of the
tube without the need to insert another tube into it all the way into the
pan. When they started building 'em like that I don't know; 'thought
Marshall said sometime in 60's.

'Sounds like a question for MB.
