Re: [MBZ] OT: Can a boat like this be easily towed/launched with my MB/Van?

2005-09-16 Thread Zeitgeist
Wow, thanks to all the good folks on both the Mercedes and Vanagon
listservs for the great info! Sounds like both the 300TD and Vanagon
should be able to tow a small daysailer (sub-23'), at least for short
distances), which is what I needed to know. I got some initial and
subsequent negative feedback on the MacGregor boats, so does anyone
have some specific suggestions for a small daysailer? Must be able to
sleep four (2 adults 2 kids), preferably with a small head and still
be light, maneuverable and trailerable.

2005-09-15 Thread Chuck Landenberger

Casey,,

The MacGregor boatswere built on the light side. It has a swing keel
and the pivot point can become elongated and then the lateral
strength is severely reduced.

If you can get it onto a sling so that you can check that area. More
difficult with it sitting on a trailer. Also, if it's got a small
outboard on the transom, make sure to check the transom connection to
the hull all around.

Hope it works out and pleasant sailing.

Take care,

I have no idea how much that weighs, but if its less than 3000lbs
(1500kg) and has trailer brakes (750kg without) you can tow it.
Although a lot of people will give you knee-jerk reactions that you are
a bumbling idiot. I asked a similar question on mercedesshop and got
blasted by everyone except 3 or so people.

On the mbz list there was a guy over in Norway (I think) who increased
the towing rating on his W124 300D and towed quite a large camper
trailer all over the area for 6 weeks. He even got Mercedes to legally
increase the towing limit on his car.

So it is possible. You just have to make sure you pay attention to
whats going on. If I remember correctly you're doing an intercooler
project, which would mean you know exactly what you can and can not do
with the car ;)

Best of luck with it!

Re: [MBZ] OT: Can a boat like this be easily towed/launched with my MB/Van?

2005-09-15 Thread Richard Hattaway
It's a good middle of the road daysailer. Daysailing is one of the
most fun things to do on earth.

Make sure there are no soft spots in the gel coat. Look for mushy
places all over the boat, especially under/at the waterline. Push with
your fingers. Everywhere. Like giving the boat a massage. If you
find * one * then pass on the boat. It's like rust in the frame, only
worse to fix.

The boat can easily weigh 3000. Any fiberglass boat w/cuddy will be
1500 minium. My boat is an open cockpit 20 footer, and it weighs
almost 1000, and I have almost no weight in the centerboard.

If you are drysailing it, ie it is at a club or close to the water and
all you need is a mule to launch, then you are fine. If you plan to
tow it 30 minutes each way I would go carefully. Controlling a heavy
boat in heavy braking is an eye opening experience. Start and stop
towing a heavy load is murder on a transmission.

I also own an older I/O runabout. It's ~4000 pounds. I tow it with an
F-250 Ford HD pick-um-up truck and I still give plenty of room in front
to stop.

Dunno, I know nothing about this size boat, though I believe I've seen
smaller-type trucks and cars towing daysailers like this around.
