BTO is good stuff.  I don't recall hearing that one before!   Sounds
like they had been listening to Mason Proffit.   Mason Profit blended
western, bluegrass, and rock with some blues thrown in for goog
measure.   They never reached big label stardom, but were a #1
regional/underground band. roughly 1968-74.  The album Movin Toward
Happiness is a masterpiece. Ive posted a link to one of their songs from
time to time.

REO Speedwagon was the same regional favorite in about the same time
period.   I was shocked when REO got mainline airtime in 1988-89 and
were introduced as a "new band" on west cost stations.  I thought they
were a huge success  in 1970_/+ y 5 yrs.

That article says Stan Jones wrote it and recorded it in late 1948 or
early 1949, and everybody else recorded it in 1949. But Wiki isn't
always accurate.

BTW, this is what happens when my childhood Rock and Roll hero, Randy
Bachman, decides to record a western song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq94f49Q-fU
By 1977, BTO didn't get radio play in USA, the only reason I knew the
song was that I bought the album. Apparently Randy quit right after
the album was recorded. (it was on the Freeways album in 1977, I have
no idea why the youtuber used the 4 wheel drive album art)

Maybe our Randy heard it on the radio in western Canada?
Mitch.

Vaughn Monroe was number one on the charts for singing Riders in the
Sky in 1948.
Burl Ives singles list and chart rating doesn't show Riders in the
Sky, but he probably sang it since he tried nearly every popular song
that came along.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaughn_Monroe#Singles
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burl_Ives#1930s%E2%80%931940s

Marty Robbins and Burl Ives had great voices. I remember watching
Martys TV show not long before he died. I still catch myself mentally
singing those old songs from the 30s to those sung during the Vietnam
war. After that, I couldn't tell you the names of singers or the songs
they sang. Times and tastes change, of course.

I'll bet no one here is old enough to remember the first singer who sang Ghost
Riders in the Sky.
Hint: He was a truck driver whose throat was injured in an accident. The injury
have him a "new voice" which made him the most popular singer of the early post
WW-2 era.

Sons of the Pioneers were among the many to record it in 1949, it was a
massively popular song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMqKv7BOg_s

Stan Jones wrote it and this is the version that plays in my head when I think
of it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LinTHp5wpHg

I think Burl Ives was the second one to record it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2klh2cTa_Q

Vaughn Monroe:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ais2uSUwIuY

Johnny Cash did a well known version too.

One of the most thrilling live songs I ever heard was the Sons of the
Pioneers (on many 1950s westerns, especially the singing cowboy
westerns) sing Ghost Riders.

They were in the Rodeo arena.

There are multiple versions of Ghost Chickens in the Sky
The one I remember:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ0M65i_D6w

A chicken farmer went out on one dark and dusty day
And by the coop he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a rotten egg hit him in the eye
It was the sight he dreaded: Ghost Chickens in the SkyTM

This farmer had these chickens since he was twenty-four
Working for the Colonel (pronounced "Kernel," eh?)(TM) for thirty
years or more

Raising all those chickens up to send them off to fry
And now they want revenge: Ghost Chickens in the Sky

A newer one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66vT4CMpCl4

An old cowboy went out and bought a ranch in '65
Spent all of his money and no cattle could he buy.
So he called up Colonel Sanders and asked, "What should I do?"
The Colonel said, "Buy chickens, and build the chicken coop."
Now he's been a chicken rancher since he was 24
Yeah, workin' for the Colonel now for 30 years or more!
Ah, fixing all those chickens up and sending them to fry,
now they want revenge.

Ghost Chickens in the Sky!
Chickens to bake, and chickens to fry.
Ghost Chickens in the Sky!

He was out a walkin' on his chicken ranch one day
He stopped along the chicken coop as he went along his way,
and all at once a rotten egg, it hit 'em in the eye.
It was, a terrible sight.
Ghost Chickens in the Sky!

Might be related to the legendary chicken fairy.

Lyrics
Legendary chicken fairy big as life and twice as hairy
In our windows you'll come creepin'
Bringin' goodies while we're sleepin'
When you wish upon a bird makes no difference how absurb
The chicken fairy hears each word and all your dreams come true
Chicken fairy in the sky Mother Goose is butterfly
Do whatever's necessary legendary chicken fairy
Sing a song that's sanitary take my wish oh big canary
Legendary chicken fairy make my dreams come true.
