Re: [MBZ] OT front loading washing machine bearings

2020-02-18 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Did you look online for information on the make and model? With ours, it
was easy to find out how to open the top. On it, there are 2 clips on
the front between the top and the front panel. Pushing in with a putty
knife releases the clips and then one can pivot the top upwards out of
the way and access screws that hold the front panel onto the side
panels. Remove one screw on each side at the top and the front panel
then tilts out and can be removed. That opens up the washer to the point
where most of it is accessible.

I had an old friend, who has since passed on at the age of 93, who was
quite proud of the fact that they were still using a dryer that they had
purchased in the 40's. He had replaced bits of it a number of times and
retrofitted newer parts to take the place of items no longer available.
It had become a challenge for him to keep it going as long as he could.
I believe it outlived him.

One of the concerns with longevity of our washer is that it is rusting
in the bottom. I was not going to mess around with paint so I sprayed
Boeshield B9 (I think that is the name of the stuff) on the rusty spots
in the bottom in an effort to slow down the rusting. I have used it on
things in the garage and it seems to work well. That is good as the
stuff is expensive.

going to use some metal plates like for joining wood rafters and
joists and what not and screw the top to the sides and be done with
it.  I have some in the garage  I don't care what it looks like as

Re: [MBZ] OT front loading washing machine bearings

2020-02-18 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
We had a somewhat similar issue with a Maytag top loading washer
recently. It was becoming unglued on the spin cycle too. It vibrated a
lot which caused the control panel to vibrate against the top of the
washer which created a lot of noise. I kept saying I would have a look
at it and she kept saying she just wanted to buy a new washer.  I had a
look online and the best suggestion seemed to be that 6 springs that go
between the base and the drum around the tub become weak over time. The
cost was pretty reasonable so I got a set and installed them. That
reduced the vibration substantially. We don't recall what it was like
when new but it appears to be much improved and much quieter so she is
happy once again. The control panel housing still rattled against the
top of the washer and there did not appear to means to tighten it so I
cut some pieces of fairly soft plastic out of something from the
recycling bin and pushed them into the crack between the top and the
housing and that solved the problem. I think a bead of silicon would
have worked fine but she was concerned that it would be hard to keep
clean so I looked for another alternative.

I can say that changing out the springs was a miserable job. The 3 in
front were not bad but the 3 in the back were hardly possible so I cut a
good sized hole in the back of the cabinet and worked on it from behind.
An air nibbler made short work of cutting a neat hole. I did not bother
to put the piece back in. It cannot be seen on the back and the cabinet
did not appear to be weakened.

I had difficulty stretching the new springs into position. They used to
sell a tool for doing the job but it is not longer available. I ended up
using a set of long vice grips and a set of small vice grips plus a
block of 6 X 6 about 6 inches high. The long vice grips would not grip
the spring wire hard enough not to slip so I put the small set of vice
grips on the wire and then used the long ones under the little ones and
pried the spring up using the block of wood as the fulcrum. It took me
most of a week working for a bit every night. I took it apart on Sunday
evening and removed the old springs on Monday evening. I was busy
Tuesday evening and did not work on it. Wednesday night I cut the hole
in the back and fought with it. Thursday we got the set of long vice
grips because I did not have enough leverage to get the springs on
further into the cabinet where it was more difficult to reach while
laying on the floor behind the washer. Thursday night I got the 3 back
springs on. Then I got interrupted  when my son in Ottawa called to wish
me a happy birthday and gave up for the night. Friday night I got the 3
front springs on and put the cabinet back together. Saturday, I opened
up the dryer and cleaned the lint out of it. Then we hooked both the
washer and dryer back up and ran them and all was well. Not really my
idea of fun. I am happy that I did not become an appliance repairman but
I was happy to repair the thing so that it will work for a while longer.

Damn webmail sent while I was typing.

I love the Fisher & Paykel top loading dryers from 10-15 years ago.
I was going to get my mom a set of front loading Speed Queens back in 2002, but
she didn't want to bend down to reach in them, and she didn't want them on tall
platforms that would make them block the laundry room window.
Got her a Ecosmart washer instead, and she loved it. When the top loading
Smartload dryer came out, it was awesome. You just pull the clothes out of the
top of the washer and throw them at the top of the dryer.

One time I found an Intuitive washer with one broken fin on the agitator for
$50, to go with my Intuitive dryer.
Upon arrival at their house, I was aghast to learn that the reason for disposal
was that a heating coil burned out in the dryer so they bought a new Samsung
front loading set and had the dealer haul the dryer away. I would have paid
them more than $50 for a good dryer with a fried coil. Got another $50 washer
last summer, the more common Ecosmart variety, same mechanicals but less
brains. This one had a bad drum bearing.

For the last year or 2 our 11 year old Maytag front loading washing
machine has sounded like a jet taking off when it starts to spin.
Very loud bearing noise.  There is no official repair for this
problem, the solution from the manufacturers is to replace the outer
drum assembly. The problem is the bearing seal in the back starts
leaking them takes out the bearings after a while.  They are just
like wheel bearings on a car with an inner, outer and a seal.  There
are guys on Amazon and ebay that sell the kits.  The job requires
nearly complete disassembly of the machine.  The hardest part is
wresting the drum in and out of the chassis after you get everything
disconnected.  The actually replacing of the bearings after you get
the tub it is just like replacing them on a car.  From start to
finish the job was right at about 3 hours and $40 for parts.  Machine
is whisper quiet again. Much better than buying a new washer/dryer set.
