I just got an email from my local Kenworth dealer:

Notice Regarding CDK Cybersecurity Incident

To all Inland customers,

We would like to inform you of a temporary disruption in our
services due to a cybersecurity incident affecting our primary
business system—CDK. This incident has impacted CDK’s dealer
customers, both car and truck, across North America.

We remain fully operational and have implemented our business
continuity response plans for incidents like this. These plans
ensure your needs are met, but it may take a little extra time to
complete each transaction.

There is currently no ETA for a resolution, but we want to assure
you that the continuity of our service remains our top priority.

We thank you for your understanding and patience, and we will
keep you informed of updates as they become available.

Sincerely,

The Inland Team

no idea how to do it with all the software they are used to using.

Re: [MBZ] He Has the Passport for this Car

2024-06-20 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
When we moved here in February of 1982, we were a single car family: a 1977
Malibu. I started working instantly (2300hrs to 0700hrs shift at a Circle K).
As I searched for a better gig, Mrs. Bob nailed down a job as a hostess at a
Bob’s Big Boy. Suddenly, we needed two vehicles. I bought a ‘68 Beetle
(Blanche…the only car I ever named) that needed a fender replaced. $175 and I
had a fender in my shed. Started driving Blanche ilate at night then early in
the morning so it wasn’t too bad.
After being robbed almost every other at the Circle K, I began working at the
City of Phoenix Wastewater Treatment Plant. I was able to drive on dirt roads
among the irrigated fields to and from the plant so Blanche didn’t mind that
she was air cooled. I very seldom drove her in town in the summer.
Blanche served me well until a stop sign runner clipped me, spun out, and
landed shiny side down in a flowing irrigation canal. Dude got out, wife was
stuck in the car. I helped him get her ginormous carcass out of the submerged
car, they stood there and stared at me, then ran (or waddled) off. I
pulled/beat the left front fender back into a shape that I could limp home and
I did.
I parted was with Blanche, for $275, and got my ‘62 Falcon. I was pimpin’

Re: [MBZ] He Has the Passport for this Car

2024-06-20 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Requirement in my family that your first car had to be a Beetle. Unfortunately
(?) for me, there weren’t any decent ones around when the time came and my Dad
got a nice deal on a 1970 2-door Maverick that was a total stripper. “Three on
the tree,” heater and AM radio, which of course I dealt with immediately with
my removable slide mount Radio Shack under dash cassette player, an amp and
some surface mount speakers for the parcel shelf. I totaled it about 6 months
later and got a Beetle convertible.

I keep seeing a guy drive by my house every day in a classic orange Beetle
convertible, likely a 1969 or 1968 from the looks of it. Beautiful car, makes
that lovely “ping-ping-ping” sound when it’s timed just right.

Someone down the street had a Beetle for sale recently. It was a little beat,
but appeared solid. Can’t imagine driving one in the winters around here, other

You don’t know how many little hoses there are in that fuel injection system,
do you? Every one of them likely needs replacement. And of course, you have all

Yeah that article said it was a ransomware attack that could likely
spread to other connected devices as well -- computers, phones, etc.
that are used to access the system.  And it said some devices were back
up and running but I doubt if that does much good if the main database
has been corrupted (backups too).

That is a STEAL if the condition and mileage check out. Even with the wear and
tear on the car it’s still a really nice example for the model year and miles.
I’m wondering why it’s been up for 13 days.

Of all the MBs I’ve owned over the years, the 300SD is pretty much the pinnacle
of cars, especially diesels, that I’ve owned.

I'd be willing to invoke a special dispensation on the no black car rule on
this since it would not be a daily driver.
It's probably a good thing it is up in Lost Wages.

That’s sweet. Needs pics of the engine compartment and trunk with the rubber
mat lifted up to check for corrosion. I don’t know these that well, but
comparing to something like a finnie in comparable condition, I don’t think his
ask is too outrageous. I think $7500 would be a solid price, but if that’s
original miles, certainly more. I wonder if it has AC?

Does your “No black cars” mandate apply here?

2024-06-19 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I got the thing back together quite easily. I jiggered the inner joint around a
bit and it slid right on! Yay in that.

Getting the hub end back in with 2 LCA ball joints was a bit more challenging,
one kinda conflicts with the outer CV joint but with various shifting around I
got everything back together. Gotta tighten up the nuts and outer axle bolt in
the hub then on to the right side.

I’m gonna get another inner seal while I’ve got it apart. I was stupid snd
didn’t order one, now I’m gonna have to go to the stealer. Called them this
afternoon and their parts computer was down so the guy couldn’t check, but in
JAX there were 27. Not that that does me any good tomorrow.

I have to replace a LCA on the right, the ball joint was completely shot and
rattling.

Progress!

Re: [MBZ] Success!!!

2024-06-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
No not really.  I had thought of that, using some sort of small
hydraulic bottle jack but the issue is that the cup ends that fit on the
intermediate shaft (both sides) sit up inside the frame rail on both
sides.  You can sorta reach in there from the bottom, there is a bit of
opening but not a lot, and maybe with more clearance (car up higher than
I have it) and a mallet and rod of some sort it might be possible, but
then that might damage the bearings on the intermediate shaft.  Plus
getting some tension on the cable would be kinda hard given how the
whole thing is set up.

The main issue seems to be that there are retaining rings in a slot on
both the intermediate shaft and the axles both sides, and these have to
be compressed or something as the axle is being pulled out.  This will
probably be some sort of issue putting it back together, the WIS shows a
compression tool like those things for getting fuel line fittings off, I
have a set of those.  This one they show is $150!!!

Re: [MBZ] Success!!!

2024-06-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yes.  $400. It's basically two bars that fit either end of the inside
part of the axle with threaded rods that connect the ends of each bar
and the slide hammer shaft screws into one of the bars. Probably
something I could make but that would have taken a fair amount of effort
but maybe not as much as I ended up with.  I don't know.

There are kits that have these slotted disk things that fit over the

Ultimately it worked out ok even with the effort so I can’t complain (much)

The cable was my thought on why it was so difficult as well.
Happy that it ultimately worked for you.
If you had to do these often, you would no doubt find a better way.

On LF the the end on the diff is a male spline so I can get at it with a metal
brush on the drill. That’s the one that was really hard. I’ll grease it up and
the new axle *should* slide right on.

The RF has a female spline fitting at the diff and the axle has the male
spline. I’ll have to see how best to get that one cleaned up.

I have to replace the R LCA too, the air strut hooks to that and the buddy
won’t come off and the torx hole on the strut tapered bolt has stripped so
that’s going to be the next challenge.

2024-06-17 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I went to a PCA rally at Saddlebrook with Roger (remember him?) I know the
basics about 911s and 914s from my VW days, but that’s about it. Woger had some
commitment for part of the afternoon, so I just wandered around the
field/parking lot and looked at cars and spoke to owners.

I spent a good 30 minutes with a guy who walked me around his 912 in great
detail. Provenance, restoration work, mechanicals, appearance, you name it.
This guy clearly knew all there was to know and more about 912s. I wouldn’t
have known the difference. Yet I noticed that some people sort of turned up
their noses at his car, and I asked him it it was just me or were people really
acting that way.

“Well, some so-called purists don’t think a 912 should be compared with a 911,
that it’s a second cousin, or red-headed stepchild to the 911. It’s just as
much fun to drive, maybe not as fast, but it looks the same yet costs a lot
less.”

Smartest guy in the place.

A friend at the gym was telling me about his '14 Audi. Broke the timing belt
(or chain?) and dealer told him he needed a new engine, quote was close to or
maybe into five figures. The local MB indy he goes to for his GLA gave him the

"Replace major component" is the dealer approach, no longer do they take the

In OK they do not have to charge a doc fee but if they do they have to charge
everyone. In MO the state mandates the max dealer’s can charge. They just
raised it $299 to $599 IIRC. I had a lot of dealers raise their default fees in
desking as soon as they happened. It’s pure padding for the deal basically.
Sales people do not get paid on it. There are a variety of things the sales
people don’t get paid on that the dealers make money on such as the hold back
on new cars as well as whatever the dealer pack which can be different on new
versus used. Hold back is basically bonus money paid on each unit from the
manufacturer. A typical amount is in the $4-800 range. Pack is just a number
that is added to the cost of each deal that the owner/dealer principal comes up
with. This could be anywhere from $8-1200 and is basically added to the cost of
the vehicle subtracted from the gross. This amount goes straight to the owners
pocket which also lowers the commission the dealer pays the sales person on the
deal.

I would rather have the Jag. I lust after those, they're beautiful cars.

I can’t imagine what a clown show buying a new MB is today. I love how there’s
no price on the Monroney sticker (how do they get around that?) meaning that
they’re going to jerk me around as much as they can before they every get to
the Tru-Coat stuff.

I like how MB of Tampa has a “dealer fee” of $800 last time I checked, and will
not under any circumstances remove it from a sale, even with used cars on their
lot. One of the few times I drove the CL600 I was picking up some parts there
and one of the used car idiots came out and started jerking my chain about what
a great trade the car would be. I’m thinking he figured I was an idiot, because
as soon as I said, “Give me a price and guarantee it before anyone ever touches
the car” and he was like, “Oh, yeah, no problem.” I told him I would be at the
wholesale parts counter to pick up some parts and his face dropped. Never saw
him again, but I did see his boss and asked him where the guy was because he
wanted to make me an offer on my 2001 CL600. His eyes got wide and he says,
“Did he give you a number yet?"

There was something on the used lot a few years ago that I recall being
interested in, might have been a W211 when I was looking for Mrs. Dan’s R129
replacement. I told the sales guy they would have to take the “Dealer fee” off
of the contract, they could bury it where ever they wanted, but I wasn’t paying
it as a line item.

“We can’t do that, sir.”

“Well, I guess you won’t be making this sale."

My 2008 ML550 just turned 193k the other day. Been a great ride since I bought
it.

It’s one of my all-time favorite MBs.

Would be nasty to drive behind one. I don't even like driving behind old
classic cars when their owners have them out for a Sunday drive. I remember
that smell as a kid -- it really demonstrates how much unburned fuel those old
carbureted V8s just dumped out the exhaust pipe.

To restore a modified classic car to original condition?
My uncle's 1968 Camaro would be worth more with a 60s vintage 327 than
with the 350 that he bought new in the 70s when he ran the original 327
out of oil.

Work performed under current ownership included a repaint in red,
installing an overhauled 850cc two-stroke inline-three in place of a
previously retrofitted 1.5-liter V4, and rebuilding the carburetors.

Yes, a freewheel like on a bicycle.
The shadetree fix for sticky pawls was Marvel Mystery Oil in the
gearbox.
But most people just locked the freewheel out (with 4 strokes) if it
started skipping when throttle reapplied. I don't recall what lube the
Saab 95/96/97 gearboxes used, the 99 gearbox took SAE 70 gear oil.

2 stroke engine, no oil injection, premix.

If you were coming down a hill in gear the engine would be above idle but would
only be getting an idle level of oil fed to it. No crankcase oil...

That's weird. How would feeding it more throttle cause the oil to
circulate more?

Did they want you to coast down the mountain using only wheel brakes to
keep your speed low?

The 300CD- what sells for more on BAT, 125,000 documented miles, or
67,000 indicated miles, actual miles unknown?

The Evo II- I was expecting six digits, was not expecting more than my

I never drove a 2 stroke, but the later cars with the Ford V-4 forklift
engine had the same gearbox. The freewheel was an oddity in the V-4, but
pretty important in a two stroke without oil injection. Coasting to a
stop with the throttle shut and the drivetrain spinning the engine was
no big deal, but engine braking down a mountain with little to no fuel
would result in damage from oil starvation.
