Well, my wife recently told me that she found another receipt and did the
calculation and found a figure of some 47 mpg. I told her there had to be
something wrong there. She, normally the skeptic and critic of the car, said
we should just think its true and enjoy.
Not sure whats going on. She is no dummy - has a PhD in a science field.

Question: Can an odometer that is about to go bad actually clock more miles

Not usually, though a dial could in theory stick and roll two spots
(or more) instead of one. But the trip odometer wouldn't track the
cumulative one in that case. I use the TO almost exclusively to
track fuel mileage, but I write down both numbers in the log.
Little chance of that tricking me.

A couple of gallons off on a 8-10 gallon fill could do it. Women don't like to
run 16 gallons out of a 17 gallon tank, and they are probably less likely to try
to squeeze an extra gallon or two into it when they refill.

I got 33mpg in the 300D 2.5 Turbo on a round trip from Norman to Houston --
I think the MBs would get even better mileage if they weighed less -
wonder much better you could get by stripping out all the electric
motors from the interior, installing light weight racing seats, etc?

I got 31mpg (actually I think it was like 31.6, so almost 32) from my 240D
once. I'm sure that if I took it on a long highway trip and could make myself
keep the speed to say 60mph (would need working cruise) I could get 35. That'd
require one of those brutal trips stopping only for fuel and peeing in a bottle
while driving... ;)
