I had a Suburban for a long while and it was similar in the sense that
the 3rd seat was hefty and hard to manoever into the right spot. The
Sub is not tall enough to let one stand, even bent over, so one is
trying to lift this thing while on one's knees. Nice to have when one
needed more seating and nice that it was removable so that one could
haul more but a bit of a pain as once out of the vehicle, it had to be
stored somewhere too. Decent cloth seats so not to be left outdoors to
get wet.

The Sub was good in many ways. had seat belts for 9 people. Pull the 3rd
row seat, flip the 2nd row seats and put 4X8 sheets of plywood or
whatever inside and close the rear doors. I hauled all of the shingles
to re-roof the cottage out in the back under our luggage on trips to the
lake. I would take 6 or 8 bundles each time. Bought the whole works on a
good sale and stacked them in my garage along the wall. Took all summer
to get them out to the lake but I did not make a special trip. That was
close to 20 years back now.

We test drove a Toyota Tunda 4dr (everybody has their own name for it) a couple

maybe 6 if some were small.

I don't see us needing the extra space of a full size 4dr, we get along just
fine in the Ranger now. The only time the Ranger has been inadequate is when
towing cars, it was okay for the Jetta but overmatched with the 190D.

If we bought a single cab pickup I'd either get a cap for the rear or a full
width toolbox. Angie likes to carry a bunch of junk. I tried explaining to her
that 90% of whats in the back seat she doesn't need 90% of the time, you can

Nope, not 4WD. It does have the electric rear axle locking though, and lots
of ground clearance. It probably has enough room behind the front seat for
a mid sized dog - that was one of the deciding factors between the
different manufacturers of trucks.

I have the triple fold hard aluminum tonneau cover on my truck and so
far I like it.

It can be folded back to open up most of the box.
It can be readily removed and it not heavy.
It permits me to hide and reasonably secure whatever is in the box.
It is reasonably sealed so things in the box should stay dry.
Not quite so cumbersome as a cap and not nearly so expensive.

regarding mr sterling -- while i certainly have no love of political
correctness (or, for that matter, minorities), i side with the NBA on this
matter. as an owner of an NBA franchise, you represent the league in both
public and private as all of your actions impact the collective of owners
and the league itself. while you do retain your right to be an individual,
the league also ought to sanction you when your individual expression is
harmful to the league and its members.

i personally don't have an issue with this guy. first off, i think his
comments are obviously blown out of proportion. he's got a black
girlfriend and owns an NBA team -- not quite anything that would be
approved of by the society of friends of adolf hitler. he's just another
crazy old jew from queens (or, in this case, los angeles by way of chicago)
and all of us talk this way as we never shut up and might be trying to be

nothing or next to nothing.

none the less, i'd support his censure, although probably not a life ban or
anything close to that

W140 with 260k is still running strong; had an incident last weekend where the
AC didn't come on, but it's been fine since. I'm going to attribute it to
operator error, as I don't see anything else that could cause it. It does have
an EGR code it keeps throwing, but I'm almost sure it's a bad connection or
wire to the vacuum valve, as everything else in the system is fine.

R129 continues to run well. I have been driving with the hard to in place as I
had the windows tinted recently and it's getting hotter here (85+ during the
day) so it's not exactly comfortable to have the top down. I am surprised that
I gain a couple of miles per gallon with the hard top in place - I had no idea
the soft top created that much drag! With the had top in place I am regularly
getting 20+ MPG with an almost 50-50 mix of surface streets vs. highway. Not
bad for a five liter V8.

W124 is doing well, I guess - I don't get much feedback from the oldest boy,
and it is his car. I know it's closing in on 206k, but other than needing some
tires soon it must be running all right or he would be asking me about it. It's
truly a $1000 beater but it's been a great first car for him and has held up
well - thanks, Tony!

I would really like to get the wife into a W140 sedan, like an S500, but she
clings to her Mazda6 and has no interest in driving a Benz. I guess I could
give her the SL500 and get a W140 sedan for myself, but I know she would thrash
the car to an early death. I'm going to replace her car next year, but it will
probably be with a relatively late model Mazda or something similar.

Interestingly Ford is quoting quite high fuel economy with their v6 turbo
engine. I'll need to drive one to see if its worth having. I did have a Chevy
rental last year, 4dr 4wd and the v6 was powerful enough. Quite buzzy as I had
to keep it in 3rd on the highway (no joke) towing my 240D but it did the job
and turned in decent fuel economy.

Nope, not 4WD. It does have the electric rear axle locking though, and lots

a mid sized dog - that was one of the deciding factors between the

I have the triple fold hard aluminum tonneau cover on my truck and so
far I like it.
It can be folded back to open up most of the box.
It can be readily removed and it not heavy.
It permits me to hide and reasonably secure whatever is in the box.
It is reasonably sealed so things in the box should stay dry.
Not quite so cumbersome as a cap and not nearly so expensive.

did the job and turned in decent fuel economy.

I was driving my '83 300D beater through Crystal RIver which is a short
distance from the outer edge of the tidal swamp that makes up the coast
of this part of north central Florida when some big sea bird (probably a
pelican) dumped a huge load of white feces on the hood. I was on the
way home so I didn't stop to clean it off. By the time I arrived at the
house, the pelicans present had dried and was barely removeable with a
garden hose. It stained the evenly oxidized blue finish of the beater,
and as everyone knows, there is no way to get stain out of oxidized
paint besides letting it continue to oxidize until the paint has
powdered off and the stain is gone.
There are many advantages to having a Mercedes daily driver with
oxidized paint. No one envies me for having a Mercedes, and thieves
don't even think about breaking into it since there is little likelihood
of anything valuable being inside.
So you see, Randy, there are always problems with our old Mercedes.
It's just that many are hardly worth discussing.

Re: [MBZ] Quiet List?

Actually my fleet has been chugging along nicely. The '84 190D has responded
well to some highway flogging. You might remember I had some complaints about
cold starts on it, after making the run to work a couple times and once to have
breakfast with Fred its much improved. I order some diesel purge in my last
order of VW parts which should finish the job.

The Jetta seems like it needs a glow plug or two, I put in a new glowplug
harness which got the check engine light to shut off for awhile but its back. I
need to get under the hood with the multi-meter. Apparently rounding off the
flats on the glow plugs is very common on these so I'm nervous. Car starts
perfectly, but its been so warm the glow plugs don't even come on.

The search for a Ranger replacement continues. Next to test is Nissan, Frontier
and Titan. If we like it I'd consider buying a new Frontier, you can get them
for around $25k which is nice and its all the truck we need.

Today's job for normal life was to convert my formerly corporate cell phone to
an individual responsibility that the company gives me a stipend to have.
Looks like my useage is low enough I'll actually be ahead $10 or $20/mo on the
deal.

My 300TD is now the proud owner of a refurbished drive shaft assembly, new
rubber bits and bearings. (It's about time, I've only had the parts 2
years!!) The disks were getting ragged and the center mount was torn free
with a crunchy bearing.
It is difficult to type whilst under the car, wrenches in hand dodging rain
