If you do end up needing a transmission and want to go used, I have a
spare one I was keeping in case I ever needed it I might be able to sell
you.

When they pull that cover to

anything about resetting the

is to see if the big electrical

Most

of the time that plug needs to be

leaks

fluid into the wiring harness

A lot of shops use a $2000 Snap-On that's supposed to replace all the factory
tools. Just subscribing to the updates would price it out of home mechanic
reach. It's not your typical $100 OBDII tool.

But given the potential cost of misdiagnosis, I'd run it through the dealer for
a quick check and see if they fix it via computer or come up with a different
opinion.

I'd take it to the dealer for a computer clear and check.
If that cures the problem, ask your shop to pay the dealer for you.
If the dealer says 'replace tranny', you just bought a 2nd opinion.

They mentioned that they had
checked that [because it was listed

it was not leaking. I do
appreciate that they are more than
willing to accept suggestions.

When they pull that cover to
replace it I would bet the old one
comes out in 2 pieces. I don't
anything about resetting the
computer with that method so I
can't say if it really works or
not. One other thing to check also
is to see if the big electrical
plug at the tranny is leaking. Most
of the time that plug needs to be
replaced. what happens is it leaks
fluid into the wiring harness which
can actually wick up and get into
the tranny computer causing these
sorts of problems

Thanks - I have a call into Rusty
on that. I figured he was lower on
the one part needed, but while I
was on the phone with the shop I
put in the part number and he
doesn't have it listed.
I'll ask them to check the spring
and also to contact Sun Valley.
On the positive side, my S420 is
tooling along beautifully. Just
got back from a trip to Union City,
GA with it, and even with 5 in the
car all seemed in comfort and a
good ride. I did pick up a lightly
used set of 18" Michelins that are
the correct size for the car, and
as soon as the baby ones that are
on it wear out I'll put them on.
Still prefer 16's, but I think the
ride will be good with the correct
tires for the rims/car.
Thanks - Bill R

Re: [MBZ] S320 transmission needed

2011-08-12 Thread Bill Ringgold
I needed to give you more
information on the tranny. It has
been acting up, revving too high
prior to a shift from 1 - 2 [I have
not driven it recently, but that is
the report from my wife]. Her
description: It was like driving a
stick shift and not knowing how.
It would go in and out of gear,
shifting up and down.
It has been doing that for a couple
of weeks.

You do not need a new transmission,
the local transmission shop does
not
know what they are doing. Those
722.6 trannys are pretty bullet
proof
mechanically. There are 2 common
problems that cause them to go in
limp
mode. First there is this little
spring that breaks in the valve
body.
The other is some speed sensors on
the conductor plate. Both are very

easy fixes. The spring is a couple
bucks, the conductor plate is less
than 200 from Rusty. I bought my
97 E300 with a bad transmission,
that
spring was broken on mine but I
went ahead and replaced the
conductor
plate anyway. You could replace
your tranmission and still have it
stuck in limp mode. Why? Because
after you replace the spring or the

plate, you have to hook the car up
to the SDS system and resent the
tranny computer. Even replacing
the tranny will not do that. Here
is a
link to info about the replacement.
I would be VERY surprised if the
tranny is bad. Am curious though
what "cracked" part they replaced

Re: [MBZ] S320 transmission needed

2011-08-12 Thread Bill Ringgold
Thanks - I have a call into Rusty
on that. I figured he was lower on
the one part needed, but while I
was on the phone with the shop I
put in the part number and he
doesn't have it listed.
I'll ask them to check the spring
and also to contact Sun Valley.
On the positive side, my S420 is
tooling along beautifully. Just
got back from a trip to Union City,
GA with it, and even with 5 in the
car all seemed in comfort and a
good ride. I did pick up a lightly
used set of 18" Michelins that are
the correct size for the car, and
as soon as the baby ones that are
on it wear out I'll put them on.
Still prefer 16's, but I think the
ride will be good with the correct
tires for the rims/car.
Thanks - Bill R

Your best bet is a rebuilt from
Rusty.

Before you give up on the "old"
trans., call Sun Valley Mercedes
Dismantlers, Sun Valley, CA and
describe the symptoms and attempted

cures. They are the best trans
diagnosticians in this hemisphere.
Rusty is the best source for a

Prior to further efforts I will ask

replaced was # 1402701161
Conductor Plate Above Automatic
Transmission Valve Body. That
still leaves the spring, which I
