Putting on my black hat, I _love_ people using wireless for 'security'. I just
carry
along my spark-gap jammer and it's instantly all stopped.

When you look at the cost of fiber and the related hardware necessary to manage
it, the point to point approach is a lot more attractive and quicker/easier to
install, set up, and manage.

That and it’s not like I have to have blazing bandwidth to the garage, either.
Right now it’s working fine with a mesh system, I just want something more
permanent.

Just my $0.02

2022-10-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I have similar considerations on the great northern estate with our barn. What
with everything (eventually) having metal roofs I'm thinking that I'll run
fiber between the buildings when I run power to the barn. That way I need never
worry about bandwidth between house and barn or interference from the roof or a
barn full of tractors or whatever.

I don't keep anything particularly valuable or easily stealable in the barn but
someday I might so I'll increase the security...

signal out to the garage using a couple of Ubiquiti dishes in a bridge

and gives me 1.7 Gbps bi-directional bandwidth to the building, with a 5GHz

Because concrete and pavers.

I can do a point to point setup in an hour or two. To run a cable I would be
jackhammering up parts of a concrete pad and ripping up professionally
installed pavers. Nope.

Re: [MBZ] Security Camera for Kleb

2022-10-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
In this day and age there isn't much excuse for not having backup for your
wifi. It'd be far cheaper, long term, to put a UPS on the wifi router and cable
modem than to use cellular data for your cameras.

Is everybody's local Facebook page full of halfwits? Ours sure is. We had a
power problem where the power blinked every day at 11am, it was out for maybe 1
second, maybe a second and a half. People acted like it was the worst thing in
the world, "I need to be on Zoom." blah, blah, blah. I should have gone to
Staples and bought a bunch of UPSs to sell to the dummies for double the
price...

Re: [MBZ] Security Camera for Kleb

2022-10-06 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Don’t need the camera to see all the local wildlife, as it just wanders by
without any concern for my presence.

Javelina, elk, deer, etc. The local deer population uses our backyard as a day
care center for some reason. The does come by with their fawns, leave them in
the back yard, and go off to forage. I’ll come out the door and there will be a
fawn that’s a couple months old in our seating area in the courtyard. They just
look at me like “Hey, what’s going on?” I leave them alone and they don’t seem
to be skittish about us walking by them.

Only thing I’ve seen on camera but don’t care to come into contact with is
Skunky. He comes by every night in front of the garage about 2:00 - 3:00 am.
There’s a fox that comes by occasionally, too. AZ Fish and Wildlife has sent
out emails to people on our street (us included) about mountain lions, but I
haven’t seen one. Tey generally don’t walk out in the open where the cameras
would see them.

I’ve seen motion detectors tied to sprinklers to keep vermin out of your yard.
That’s pretty much a “scorched Earth" approach.

2022-10-06 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
It’s been in service for over a year now, and I’ve done nothing to it. Through
the management interface I can “scan” and see everything it does, as well as
define where it’s going to detect motion (or not.) Because it has an almost 360
degree view and it’s mounted on a wall about 16’ above grade, it can “see” the
road in front of the house. I’ve marked out that area for it to ignore so cars
driving by don’t trigger it.

Re: [MBZ] Security Camera for Kleb

2022-10-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Do you find a need to clean the motion sensor?

I have LED floodlights with motion sensors outside the garage, and they have
developed the same problem that caused me to replace their incandescent
predecessors: I have to walk up in front of them, jump up and down and wave my
arms to get them to switch on. They worked fine when new.

I'm wondering if there's a way to clean them somehow? Or is it another issue?

Yeah ideally you'd want a wide-angle motion sensor and then a camera that could
automatically track and zoom on the moving object. Those are probably expensive
though.

You need a PTZ camera with motion detection. That’s one in the little “dome”
that rotates. There are limitations wit the optics that would probably prevent
you from finding a camera that could cover that large of an area. I’ve done it
both ways, with two camera overlapping on the driveway of the FL home, and a
PTZ camera for the courtyard between the house and garage in AZ. Both work just
fine, but have their limitations. A lot depends on what you’re trying to spot
with the camera…

I want one triggered by motion that is wide angle enough to cover the
entire back yard.

Understood. However, he’s concerned about the security of his outbuildings, and
if he’s reliant on wifi and power goes out, he’s got nothing. It records events
and sends alerts. Unless you were streaming video from it constantly the amount
of data used would be relatively small. I just checked the data on my wifi
connected cameras and it’s less than 500Mb/month, and that’s on ones that see
activity all day long.

Just trying to offer alternatives.

Don't know if I would go for that. It doesn't have
wifi so you have to keep paying for Data all the time.
