I found some Gameboy games under the back seat of my '85 190D. That one also
had about 3 packs of Virginia Slims stashed throughout the car. I think the
owner didn't want her husband to know she smoked.

I spent it at the farmstand this afternoon. Charge came to $10.16. I had a $10

I have to admit I saw the AMG wheels (pics showed they were chromed and ratty
but I didn't look at them that closely) and S55 badge and got all excited
instead of cautious. Fortunately I was being excited from a safe 800 mile

Yeah probably.  Poseur.  I gotta pop the trunk and see what's in there.
At this point I could probably sell some decent bits and make back a
fair amount then dismantle it and keep the engine and transmission and
whatever else.

Also bought a Camaro RS rear badge for my Cruze RS, which only came with a

I guess checking the emissions sticker and running the VIN through

paint the wheels?
Sandblasting would probably chew through the base metal faster than the chrome.

Re: [MBZ] So this "abandoned" S55..BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!!

2019-12-06 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Haha yeah.  So I went and picked this thing up.  $450.  Loading it was a
real experience with flat tires and blown struts and the front tires
turned a bit, it has about 2" of ground clearance, but Billy (the
seller, a really nice guy) helped me.  The front struts are blown, had a
lot of epoxy gooped around the tops and one air line was disconnected.
Rears are collapsed too. There was another used strut under the car and
some random exhaust bits and some other stuff, the dumbass PO was
apparently working on it. "Ran when parked."  Billy said he was roaring
around in it when he started working on it then for some reason took off
to MN and got thrown in jail for some extended stay.  The engine bay is
pretty clean, interior is pretty nice, body is straight but there are a
few small rust bubbles here and there.  Front bumper fascia is off but
in the car, looks like there was some sort of parking lot bumper
altercation or something, maybe when the front collapsed. One wheel was
the spare, two tires were flat, the AMG wheels are chromed and that is
all corroded but they appear to be correct wheels so I guess they are
worth something.  Couldn't get the trunk open, no key, battery dead.
The DPO's ex wife told Billy (who had it taking up space at the rent
house the DPO took off from) there was a key in the car hidden
somewhere, so I will dig around see if I can find it.  I found a
youtuber vid to get the trunk open without a key or good battery so will
try that.  No key, no title, "as is."  If nothing else an S55 set of
bits are probably worth something or it could be an interesting project
or donor for something interesting.  I suppose that engine would drop
easily into a 210.

OH NO I HAS BEEN DECEIVED  It is a faux S55!  The VIN sticker on
the trunk lid corresponds to a S430, perhaps sometime in the car's long
and storied life someone rebadged it with S55 ebay badges.  Too funny.

But running the VIN does say it has AMG bits

772 AMG STYLING PACKAGE-FRONT SPOILER, SIDE SKIRT
774 SHELL MODIFICATION FOR AMG-WHEELS
792 AMG-WHEELS 8X18 SQUEEZE-IN DEPTH 31 235/40 (S210)

The exhaust looks like AMG stuff though, who knows.  Kleb can you run
the VIN, WDBNG70J0YA090130 see what history might pop up? I'll have to
look at the other VINs see what they say, maybe this was a replacement
trunk or something.

He would have to read the law, as I suggested earlier.   I have no idea
what SC laws are, but in IA, the landowner can secure title for a
vehicle abandoned on their property.   Otherwise it has to done through
a tow company.

Tow companies require a license and bond in most places, again, I have
no idea what the law is in SC, thus, Floyd needs to read the law.

You  need a buddy who has a tow company.   In all your rabble rouser

Read the law.   In some cases the land owner can file paperwork to get a
title for abandoned vehicle.   If it were abandoned at Fast Floyd's
retirement home for abandoned Mercedes, the property of which is owned
by someone else, could that landowner get a title, then "sell" it to you
for $1?

Well here it seems you basically have to go through a towing yard or a
mechanic to do an auction which would run the price way up. The other
approach would be to get the car, find another S with some problems,
transplant the bits of the S55 into it, and have a franken55.  Lot of
work, but an S55 for cheap would be a good donor to build a car.  Or put
that engine in something else and have a hot rod.

Is it considered 'abandoned' if you put it on your property yourself?

Did you steal it? (Rhetorical question.) Moving it from your yard to
your barn is not theft, nor should change its abandoned status.

But one might argue that you hid it.

Is it considered 'abandoned' if you put it on your property yourself?

It looks like there are two options in NC.
After 7 days, have it towed and they get to keep it after a month.
Don't have it towed, and after 30 days you get to keep it.
Sounds like Michigan except we can have it towed immediately if trespass or in
3 days if we let them park it there.

https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/title-registration/special-cases/Pages/salvaged-abandoned-vehicles.aspx

There are several options available to an individual when a vehicle has been
abandoned on their property.

Local law enforcement will verify that the vehicle is not stolen and place
a seven-day warning sticker on the vehicle advising it will be towed if it is
not removed.
After seven days, the property owner may contact a tow company to remove
the vehicle.
If the vehicle remains on the property unclaimed for 30 days, it is
considered abandoned and the property owner may begin the process to sell the
vehicle.

For additional information about abandoned motor vehicles, call the N.C.
Division of Motor Vehicles' License & Theft Bureau at (919) 861-3141.

Around here, you notify the state, they or you notify the last known owner, and
after xx days they issue you an abandoned vehicle title, which is apparently a
form of branded title not a clean title.

Decades ago, some idiots buried a Beetle in my neighbor's field.
He pulled it out of the mud and hauled it to the barn.
Eventually, they came to the house and asked for their car.
He told them what he wanted for towing and storage, they wouldn't pay.
IIRC his fees were in line with what they'd pay if the cops called a tow truck,
so high but not outrageous.
He got an abandoned title, cleaned it up and sold it.

Mitch.

letter and some paperwork, and of course some time and money. This is
for an abandoned car.

Talk to your State DOL.

Now at
$450.  He just wanted it gone.  Some dude basically abandoned it at a

Minnesota
or somewhere, got out and supposedly came back, has a wife or
something
around somewhere, but no one will deal with the car.  I looked
into how
to deal with an abandoned car, the property owner can get a tow
yard to
take it then put it up for auction and that will clean the title.
Sounds involved. But I am wondering if it would be worth it to
grab the
thing, offer the guy $300 and haul it off, then do something...
No key...
