We had a 64 like that and having learned to drive
on that, I don't believe it either.

I would guess a 2.0l TDI would do quite a bit better, I think they make
about 140hp?

The waterboxer in my Vanagon was just OK, it would do 70-75 on the
interstate but not really any more than that without getting pretty close
to red-line. It was pretty torquey though, and around town it was fine, at
least with the manual transmission.

There was a kit to put a Ford Focus (Zetec) engine in a Vanagon. It

engine. I'd probably do that over a Subaru conversion. Based on my
experience with my '03 Focus, the Zetec engine is bulletproof.

I put a tune on Angie's Golf because it also fixed a problem we had with a
sensor in the turbo. The results were absolutely worth it. Her car wasn't slow

140-150hp depending on which one exactly but about 230lbft of torque. It's the
torque that makes it fun.

A stage 2 tune on that engine takes you to 160hp and nearly 300lbft with no
hardware modifications. Stage 3 needs a new turbo but is 190/325...

Re: [MBZ] Squareback Crackalack

2023-01-31 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
The worst Vanagon was the diesel (1.6 liter, 48hp non-turbo same as the rabbit
engine). They were dangerously slow accelerating and people often blew up the
engines trying to drive them faster than they should.

I would guess a 2.0l TDI would do quite a bit better, I think they make about
140hp?

The waterboxer in my Vanagon was just OK, it would do 70-75 on the interstate
but not really any more than that without getting pretty close to red-line. It
was pretty torquey though, and around town it was fine, at least with the
manual transmission.

Yes that could be another good option. I believe that they bolt up to the
transmission without an adapter -- at least some of the inline-4 VW engines
did. They kept the transmission bolt pattern the same over many decades.

Probably worth close to the ask if running well and rust-free. Those are
