Yup, the spin-on filter.

But they don't actually spin on, they only look like they might.
They tighten down with the center bolt. If he's been spinning
them on maybe that's the problem?

Or you can change the filter the way my MB trained Indies always did and I
never had a problem on either of my 617s. I now use the same method when I
change the secondary filter with no problems either.

1. Obviously, using a wrench or socket, loosen the bolt and then unscrew the
filter by hand.
2. Put on a new washer on the bolt, preferably a copper and not aluminum.
3. Fill the filter with injector cleaner as the cleaner will go straight to the
injectors and they get a good cleaning when you start the engine.
4. Put some diesel fuel on the filter gasket for lube.
5. Spin the filter on the bolt until it fills snug.
6. Use your wrench or socket to tighten the bolt, and I mean tighten good to
seal the filter and compress the new washer.
7. Start the engine and check for leaks. If any, tighten the filter bolt more.
Run engine until all injector cleaner has run out of the filter.

Now this has always worked perfectly on my two old 617s and is only two data
points over a period of about 14 years.
Good luck and Merry Christmas ,

ANY TYPE OF THREAD LOCKER OR GASKET SEALANT ON THIS FILTER IS ASKING FOR
INJECTOR PUMP PROBLEMS!

There is no need for sealant and if it gets past this filter it goes
straight to the injector pump. One tiny piece can cause more headache than
a fuel leak.

1. Take off the spin-on filter.
2. Look at the rubber gasket very closely.
3. If it has any imperfections, use a new filter.
4. Look at the outside of the filter. If it has any
dents or bent places, use a new filter.
4. Use any kind of oil based grease to very
thoroughly coat the gasket and the surface in the
filter assembly that the filter gasket contacts.
5. If you don't have a filter wrench that fits
your filter, buy one; their cheap.
6. Don't fill the filter with diesel fuel before
screwing it on the assembly; pump it in using many
strokes after the filter is tightened.
7. Very gently and carefully screw the filter on
until the gasket makes contact with the assembly.
8. Put the filter wrench on the filter at the top, as
close as you can get it to the top rim but not over

Don't use the wrench in any other position on the
