Since the car has 230k miles I am debating if it is

Seeing that it was a low engine speed incident you may well only require one
or two valves. Then again while the heads are off you can rebuild the heads,
replace the timing chain gear and you have a motor that should go another
200k miles easy.

How's the rust and transmission, or do you just want a new car?
Anyway the heads have got to come off, then you have an idea of how many
beans it will cost to get running again.

Well for those of you who are not familiar with the 117. You when pulling
heads you will have to heil-coil the block, which requires a special tool
for making sure you drill the holes correctly. Last I checked the tool was
$300.

I have an engine with good heads, thus the main cost is the time and the
tool. Sometimes you can get by with out heil-coiling block but not often.

The real problem is the wife, she does not appreciate me spending time in
garage. Also she is hates these 20 year old cars and all the repairs they
seem to need. Thus she has her eye set on a new mini-van. She whole hearty
believes that new cars do not have any problems.

I guess I have two options with the car, one is to fix it. The other is to
drop an OM617 under the hood which would take more time than fixing it.

at 230k miles, the heads were more than ready to be done if not yet done.

if i really liked the car, i'd do the heads and just consider it routine
maintanence at this point. if i didn't like the car, i'd use it as an
excuse to get another one.

I think we are spoiled in a way. We believe our cars will last and last and
last by performing the normal routine maintanence.
Sometimes it's hard to think of doing heads, etc as routine maintanence
because these things are so stinkin bullet-proof dependable if even slightly
taken care of.
