Viable cold is seeing your exhalation. Very Cold is when your nose hairs
freeze up and snap off at inhalation. Balaclava helps, but you get icing and
your eyebrows and lashes frost over. Eyeballs get sucked dry and hurt.
Exterior relative humidity runs around 75%, but interior falls to 3-4% if
people are breathing and the humidifier is left running overnight.

I see the forecast is for at least another dozen days of Very Cold. Now the
stuff is sliding to the south and will be infesting SEA and PDX this coming
week. Might be getting a Polar Vortex setting up for later this month.

Hoar frost build up on road signs has rendered them unreadable. Tree limbs
are becoming exceedingly heavy with increased frost over the very dry snow
cover. I suspect the constant condensate from all the furnaces and power
plant/vehicles is precipitating out. There are frost rainbows to the south and
it looks like gay pride parade glitter has been spewed by the chem trails out
of all the bombers on their way to NK and Iran.

You are correct. It was operator error on my on-screen RPN calculator
with the negative number: not realizing I needed to hit enter after
changing the sign.

The coldest I have been in was -48F in Pullman, Washington.

My father asked my brother and me to go with him to the grocery store,
but when he could not get the car started ('54 Ford with 6 V battery),
he suggested walking there. About half-a-block later I said, "This is
nuts!" and turned around. Once inside, I looked at the outside
thermometer and saw only a speck of read at the bottom of the scale
which went to -50F.

Yeah, probably - at least if you linger outside at all! Any exposed mucous
membranes like your mouth or nose will tell you the minute the ambient air hits
them.

Another way to tell how *really* cold it is is to expectorate and see how
quickly it freezes. If it turns to ice before it hits the ground, it’s very
cold. I’ve done the cup of water thing, too. It’s actually pretty cool.

-30F north of MPLS one January - we couldn't trun the prop of the radial
engine with two of us hanging on it. It took an hour of a big propane
heater on the engine and the gasoline powered cabin heater running before
we could turn it over - straight 50 wt. oil. Also a new battery - the old
one was frozen solid - came out in pieces.
Once we did get it started, I think it the shortest take-off run we ever
made in the fully loaded Cessna 195. (N9598A if you want to look it up).

The more pressing issues seem to be freezing up of drain lines in the -50c
weather the past weeks. Folks keep flushing until it all burbles up in the
wash tubs. One story was of a poor wench who would drive across town to her
work place to use facilities. She grew up in a “dry” cabin with outhouse. Now
she has a porta-potty until her lines can be cleared in the spring thaw. Many
others suffering the same fate.
