The bell housing and 5 speed manual came out of an AMG G-wagen located in
Quatar. The owner wanted to put in a six speed!

Slight ovalness that extends to the periphery IIRC. I haven't used one or
did body work in years.
Some of the bodywork tools have proven to be very useful shop tools such as
a sanding grip that takes a half sheet of sandpaper, and a slide hammer.
Had a lead scraper/rasp back in the fifties but never did any work with
lead.

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Planishing%20hammer&FORM=BILH

Second row, third from the left, is the kind of planishing hammer I had.

I actually used a slapping spoon most of the time especially on the front
fenders as it fit better between the fender and the headlight buckets.

Thanks. No that's not a Planishing hammer- sounds like a shrinking
hammer. Any auto body hammer with a smooth head can be used to planish.
Some body hammers are called Planishing but I'm not sure why.

OK - I forgot that the 560 had an aluminum block. I was thinking of the 450
in my SLC - a VERY heavy engine. I figured that the Olds 215 with it's
aluminum block and heads was a wash compared with the MG all iron 1600 4
cylinder it replaced. The Borg Warner 4 speed tranny was heavier than the

I got the impression from the blog that you'd fabricated and modified some

have to repair the nose as well.

It has a 560 engine mated to a 5 speed manual getrag tranny. The challenge was
finding an appropriate bell housing so my friend sourced an ultra rare AMG bell
housing which allowed that M117 engine to bolt up to the getrag.

My role in all this was welding the appropriate flange to the driveshaft,
fabricating the exhaust downpipes, modifying throttle linkages, and helping to
modify the pedal assembly. It truly is a dream to drive.

Haha. Didn't take any but sure thought about it. My friend worked at lightning
speed and it was cold so didn't get a chance.

Thanks. No that's not a Planishing hammer- sounds like a shrinking hammer. Any
auto body hammer with a smooth head can be used to planish. Some body hammers
are called Planishing but I'm not sure why.

Good work. Will you post the final, painted results?
Which V8 is in the car? Unless excess weight is on the front axel, that
should be an awesome SL!
