What work? I thought you just said the standard 2.2.5 release works
with that printer? Is that a very new printer? Maybe HP has fixed the
bug. Or maybe that's just one of the one's that never had it...

You can always do that with a keyDown or rawKeyDown handler. But the
behavior you're describing is a bug: it was fixed in the Mac engine
but that fix apparently didn't migrate to the Windows engine. The
correct behavior is for it to only intercept the keys when the mouse
cursor is in the movie (this isn't great either, but at least would
make sense to someone who ran into it). QT is very greedy about
grabbing messages, and it's hard to fake it out or make it wait.

It should be that way in beta 1. I'm not sure exactly what the
problem is here, but it sounds like the emacsKeyBindings property is
set to true. This is not the first report we've had of this, so it
may be that the Home stack had this preference set to try by default.
You can change this using the "Preferences" dialog.

Na, no trauma! Actually working with MC has been a lot of fun. But
it's sometimes easier to see the shortcomings of software when you
first start using it, rather than trying to document these things
later once you've "adapted" to all the idiosyncrasies.

It's a great piece of software, but there are areas of the
(authoring) UI in particular that could be better.

Notes from a new user

1999-11-07 Thread Rodney Tamblyn
Here are some notes from my recent work with Metacard.

I've using MC 2.3 on Mac OS9.

 Script editor
- The cmd+w keyboard command doesn't close a script window, but it does delete some script data in the window.
- undo (cmd+z) does not undo a paste operation (possibly doesn't work with some other operations as well).
- is there any documentation for "launch external editor" (how does this work on the Mac? Would this allow me to use an external editor like BBEdit if I would like to?)
- Is there a keyboard command to close a script window without saving changes (without invoking any dialogs)?
- I'd be curious to know why selecting "Find" from the menu bar opens a find dialog box, while selecting cmd+f invokes an inline find in the menu bar. Is there full documentation on how the latter works (eg how do I "Find again" when using the latter method of finding?)
- When I open script editor for an object with no script, an empty handler is inserted (when I didn't ask for it),
- Why am I asked to save changes for scripts when I haven't made any?

Groups
- I think that inadequate warning is given that ungrouping will delete shared data on other cards. This caught me out. The current dialog wording is ambiguous. [I've just tested this out in the latest version and NO warning is given when ungrouping a group containing a field with different text on multiple (2) cards. This must be a bug?]

Groups
In the group editor, groups are arranged in card and stack categories, yet referring to a group as cd grp causes a script error. (I think I understand why this is, but is there any way we could make the dialog less ambiguious in meaning). Perhaps referring to a cd grp should be allowed?

List variables:

 is empty
returns true (ie the list is empty) when...

[param]
returns a value (ie the list is not empty)

What is the correct way to test whether a list variable is empty?

Custom properties dialog box
Enter key in Custom properties dialog should close dialog box - shouldn't have to click "OK" button.

Authoring tool palette:
- What is the keyboard shortcut to toggle between editing modes?
- Is there any way to save palette configurations (visibility, position) to prevent need to reposition palettes each time the application launches?

Startup:
Why does dragging and dropping a stack onto Metacard open in the non-editing version (no editing tool bars).
Is this because authoring startup relies on OpenStack being passed to init authoring tools?).

Bug: editing group object scripts
- edit a group, open script for an object and make some changes, stop editing group with script window for the group object still open, attempt to save script - error appears.

MidiControl

1999-11-07 Thread mikekann

I've been having a great time playing Quicktime movies in MC2.3B1 on
Win98. Congratulations to Scott and the crew.

Kevin Miller wrote in reply to someone using the old method to play QT
on Windows:

"You could switch to using the 2.3B1 release. That has a 'player'
object that plays back Quicktime movies (you can easily convert your
MIDI to QT)."

Over here I don't have to convert from MIDI -- it plays MIDI files
directly.

I do have some questions, though. While playing a QT or MIDI file you
can stop the start the playing with the SPACEBAR or the ENTER key. I
slow believe that you can stop the playing with a PERIOD. I would like
to type into a field while listening to MIDI or viewing a QT movie, but
without the keys dedicated to controlling the player the typing is
constrained. Would it be possible to keep the music playing and type at
the same time? Could we map other keys to control the player?

Along the same lines, if a movie and music are playing at the same time
would it be possible to switch control from one player to another. I've
been fooling around with adding MIDI soundtracks to some silent movie
trailers to see how everything works. It seems like control is always on
the object that starts first, but I haven't done any detailed
investigations.

There are a lot of possibilities and it seems to work well.

One more thing. Would it be possible to make control-V the PASTE
accelerator rather than control-Y. On Windows I'm just used to that
because all the other Windows programs seem to use it. Control-C and
Control-V work well together on most keyboards.

Thanks for the great product. I'm really having fun with it.

Hi Andrew,
There is a small app that Tuviah made which you can drag-drop your files onto and
they'll become mc stacks. A very nifty little thing. It is called MC creator code, or
something like that.

Here is one place where you can find it:

Re: Going from PC to Mac

Hi Andrew,

I created a button for myself whose script looks like this:

on mouseUp
answer file "Open which stack?" -- presents *all* files
if it = empty then exit mouseUp
  toplevel it
end mouseUp

Once your stack is open, do a "Save As" under a different name. That way
MC will assign the correct Mac creator and filetype to it. If you just
do a "Save", MC won't assign the Mac-specific ID info to it.

ask password in 2.3B1

1999-11-07 Thread Hugh Senior

The new "ask password" implementation in 2.3B1 raises a couple of problems.

[1]
"ask password" needs its own standard icon to conform with the new syntax
which should now include the password parameter:

ask [with [or ]

where is one of info|question|error|warning|password

[2]
Since "ask password" now proposes using the same dialog as the standard
"ask", we have lost any ability to customise either and this instantly
limits flexibility. (It also puts a bug in the Resource Mover when trying
to move the password dialog which no longer exists.) The "ask password"
dialog should be reinstated as a separate stack.
