Thanks for the note, Ken. Glad you like the little Camel Donga. I hated
to part with it, but I had to sell a few specimens from my collection
earlier in the semester to help pay for school.

Interestingly enough, Dr. Berryman is an adjunct professor here at MTSU.
I actually took a class from him last semester. At the time, I had no
idea he had an unclassified meteorite and he had no idea that I was
interested in meteorites. He was actually referred to me by my advisor
when, during a casual conversation, he mentioned to her that he had
something that might be a meteorite.

I gave him a crash course on meteoritics, we cut the specimen, and I sent
off a chunk to UCLA to have it classified. Alan Rubin analyzed it and
gave it a classification of H5. And yes, Dr. Berryman gave me a small
piece to put in my collection =)

Again, thanks for the note, hopefully you will see the Palmersville
meteorite again in the next edition of the Meteoritical Bulletin.

Best Regards,

-chris.

Hi David (and list),

Jim and I will be at Howard Johnson's 22nd st and I-10, but only long enough
to sleep. We will be moving around and we'll have plenty of membrane boxes
with us to offer, especially the little micro ones; these can be seen on my
new membrane box website which should be up on www.meteorite1.org (I've
just pointed the site to this domain so I hope it works.)

We shall be there Friday for Michael Blood's auction (arriving very late
Thursday night) , leaving the following Tuesday.

Best wishes in the new year,

Ron Hartman

Dont you just love ebays policys and how they enforce them?  Convuluted responces like that is typical of many responces that I get from ebay also. When they made me delete the link to my artifacts auctions the closing prices of my artifacts dropped immeadiately even though I never sold many on my website. I suspect that this is because people with websites have a little more legitamacy - especially since the feedback rating system is pretty much crap and everybody knows it. My website used to be mostly for show to help out my ebay auctions but I plan on putting more time into website sales when I start up again after Tucson

Re: [meteorite-list] Possible eBay Solution?

2001-12-30 Thread Charlie Devine

Hi Ron,

Yes, I do remember that incident being discussed on the list and the
individuals involved. I suspected that's what you were referring to,
and since it happened in the days when one could leave feedback even if
no auction was involved, I think eBay was more open to removing negative
feedback if, as you say, proof of wrongdoing could be presented to them.
Indeed, I believe abuses of this sort, either padding someone's positive
feedback, or damaging them with negative feedback is one reason they
ruled feedback could only be used by the buyer and seller of a
successful auction.

Best wishes,
Charlie

It may have been. The offender claimed (as I remember) that the dealer
accepted cash for 5 auctions when he was not even in the country. There is
more to that and I'm not fighting other people's battles. I just read about
it on the list and anyone can go look it up if they wish. It was a setup and
could be proven. That's all that is important. The point is that it is
technically possible for eBay to remove negative feedback if they opt to do
so, as in the case of a criminal act.

[meteorite-list] Tucson Show

2001-12-30 Thread Michael Blood

Greetings fellow list members.
I have some details and a question:
The following dates are of particular interest to the
meteorite community:
Fri, Feb. 8 7PM Michael Blood Meteorite Auction
Tucson Jr. Chamber of Commerce Hall
1115 E. Ft. Lowell
(rustic “cowboy” setting with a bar -
details of directions provided later)
Sat, Feb 9, PM Birthday (Geoff Nodkin/Steeve Arnold) Dinner
Las Fuentes? near the traffic circle between
Braine Reed’s and Al Lang’s motels
Sun, Feb 10, AM Darryl Pitt Meteorite Auction
InnSuites “Poolside”

DATE TO BE DETERMINED:
Michael Blood Fossil Auction
Tucson Jr. Chamber of Commerce Hall
1115 E. Ft. Lowell

Dates for this fossil auction are limited to the following
options this year:
The evenings of:
Tue, Feb 5th
Sat, Feb 9th
Sun, Feb 10th
Each of these days has major drawbacks - Tue is too early
for most people to be there and is, additionally, a weekday.
Sat is during Geoff & Steve’s Birthday Dinner - who wants to
miss that? Sunday has double problems in that it is the evening
following Darryl’s auction which makes for a LONG day for
people AND, many people leave by mid afternoon on Sunday.
Still, this MIGHT be the best that can be done this year. On the
other hand, perhaps few into meteorites would really care, so,
Sat. evening would be mostly just me and Geoff missing out -
I really don’t know.
So, would those who might attend email me and let me know
When they would, might and wouldn’t/couldn’t attend each of
those evenings?
I’d appreciate it.
Thanks, Michael

 Hi Walter,
I dabble in astrophotography from time to time and
have a Kodak DC 240 digital camera. Not one of the best digi cams but
it's decent enough. I have shot the sun, moon, Jupiter and Saturn.
It's a bit tricky as you know but decent results but nothing Earth
shattering. Your Sun and Moon shots came out very well! I used a
Nexstar 5 scope. They make camera adapters to attach dig cams to the
eyepiece, one company that makes them is called Scopetronix. I think
Orion Telescopes now makes one as well.

Happy new year Walter and to all on the list!

Tom Randall

BTW, I have
recently developed an interest in astrophotography and I will be
spending more time with this.  My initial efforts were on
Christmas eve, December 24.  I used a 70mm scope and my digital
camera, which was held to the eyepiece.  Here is the best of a
series I took of sunspots:

We'll miss Walter's website.  He is a true gentlemen
and a good person to deal with.  Walter:  Good luck with your
astrophotography.  Now you can photograph all those places in the Universe
where meteorites are made!

In reference to his auctions, eBay contacted me recently as I
had a hotlink to my website.  They were quite nice about it, though, and
allowed the auction to finish.  When I explained to them that a number of
sellers had links to their commercial websites, that this was not an uncommon
practice, and also that letting them continue to do so would be a competitive
disadvantage to me, they replied that they didn't police the policy, and that
they acted only when someone complained.  They then e-mailed me a form that
I could fill out and return to them, and requested that I do so whenever I
saw someone else doing the same thing.   (I wouldn't do that, but
apparently there are others who would. If that is what they need in order to
sleep peacefully at night, then that is what they must do.)

Incidentally, they did say that you could refer bidders
to your commercial website link on your "about  me" site, and that it
would be allright to put them there.

of meteorites, etc, most of whom found my site via ebay.

Now ebay is saying they won't allow links to
  external sites.

Umm, interesting.  I just tried to change my
ebay id from wbranchsb to branchmeteorites.com and ebay would not let me do
it.  Nor would they accept branchmeteoritesdotcom.  Looks like
dealers such as Jim Strope (sikhote-alin.com) and Steve Arnold
(meteoritebroker.com) and others got theirs in time.

In case anyone follows my auctions, I did just
successfully change my id to branchmeteorites, so now I have to shades to the
  right of my id.

Speaking only from my experience with the
commercial side of my website, I can honestly say that few people actually
bought from my site.  It seems that most collectors prefer to bid at
ebay.  Funny thing is, most of these bidders bid up the price of
something far beyond what they could have gotten it for at my site.
  Amazing.

Well, I have decided that my New Years resolution
will be to spend even more time with my family (not to mention my telescope
projects) by just quitting to the commercial side of meteorites.  I will
do away with the commercial side of my site and focus more on the educational
portion.  For those of you who do not do this, I takes a lot of time to
fully process new material for sale at a website, including preparing
specimens for auction at ebay.  In the past, whenever I would post new
material at my site I would also enter for auction one specimen at a time at
ebay until it was all sold.  As I previously noted, most of my material
sells (sold) at ebay, so posting at my website and ebay becomes somewhat
  redundant and time-consuming.

As with any collecting venture, specimens fall in
and out of favor and whenever one falls out of my favor I will offer it for
sale here or at *gulp* ebay but I will no longer list the quantity of items as
  I used to.

BTW, I have recently developed an interest in
astrophotography and I will be spending more time with this.  My initial
efforts were on Christmas eve, December 24.  I used a 70mm scope and my
digital camera, which was held to the eyepiece.  Here is the best of a
  series I took of sunspots:

the camera images.  I would appreciate any critical comments from those
of you who might do astrophotograpy.

Okay, the length of this post has to be a record
for me so I will end it.  I want to thank everyone who has supported my
efforts at branchmeteorites.  I have tried to offer good material at
reasonable prices, often at cost.  You can follow any auctions I might
have by searching on my (new) user id: branchmeteorites but before I re-list
it at ebay, I have a 2263 gram sculpted Canyon Diablo for $550.00.  Here

By the way...when you give a refund to someone on
Ebay, go to the auction and file a "Non-Paying Bidder Alert." One of the reasons
that Ebay lists is something to the effect that "Customer Returned Item for a
Full Refund". Once that is completed it will immediately take you to a
screen to "Request a Refund of Your Final Value Fee". So you can offer a full
refund and still get your ebay fees refunded. The only hitch is it has to be
within 45 days from the end of the auction I believe, I have never had to do it
on an item longer than that. We just refunded an item that had damage that we
never even saw, it was a $293.00 sale on a Moriage China Plate, we refunded the
price in full and Ebay did the same for us on the fees.

  Hello Everyone,

First, my apologies to Charlie and Michael.
I re-read their post with a less defensive attitude.  I have now calmed
down enough to explain what happened at ebay.

I had some meteorite and non-meteorite auctions
ended by ebay a couple of days ago.  Ebay sellers take note:  my
auctions were ended because (1) I provided a hyperlink to my website (that is,
a clickable banner) and (2) I stated in my auctions that anything can be
returned for a refund minus shipping and auction fees.  Ebay apparently
interprets this last statement as requiring the buyer to pay these fees and
this is against their policy.  I have made references to my website and I
have stated this refund policy for literally years (though I have never had
  anything returned).

This business of not being able to link to a
website really irritates me.  If anyone has been to my site in the last 6
months or so, you would have seen a 99% educational site, which is what I like
mostly about meteorites.  I have not had any new material for sale in

[meteorite-list] Re:Ebay, Selling, Quiting, etc. Last Word! SUGGESTION!!

2001-12-30 Thread Mark Miconi

This is a bit long but worth the reading if you
sell on Ebay.

Just a suggestion from a seller of all types of
goodies on ebay. My wife and I use a service called
AuctionWatch(auctionwatch.com). OUR SLEER ID is desertcrystal for those that
wish to check out our listings in reference to what I am about to
discuss.
They offer picture hosting, auction launching, post
sale management tools and "An Ebay legal and Ebay Approved" storefront for
"Fixed Price" sales. There is another service Andale(andale.com) that is very
similar. I believe Andale offers a store front also, they did when I used their
site.
I have not used my storefront on AuctionWatch as we
do not really sell many items that we get multiples of, such as slices of the
same meteorite. Ebay does allow reference to the store front.
Auctionwatch is reasonably price, their software is
very stable and bug free. The have AMPRO which allows you to create auctions
without being online and then uploading the auctions, you can schedule auctions,
the post management tools run the gambit from Winning Bidder notifications,
which can be automatically sent if the shipping is fixed priced, payment
reminders, shipping invoice generation, shipment notification, feedback sending
without being on ebay, and feedback reminders to those lovely masses that always
seem to ask for feedback when they pay but never seem to remember to leave it
for you. You can even change the winners email address if they contact you from
one that differs from their Ebay email addy.

I hardly ever recommend anything, but will go out
on a limb and say I do on this. I know we would not be selling on Ebay if we had
to use only Ebay. Many of you may have noticed that 90% of the sellers on Ebay
suddenly stopped using multiple pictures in their listingsthat is due to
ebay upping the cost of images through their site. I BELIEVE my wife and I have
a DISTINCT advantage with AW as we have as many as 10 photos in our auctions,
AND NOT those click here to see an almost big photo, ours ARE FULL SIZE WHEN
CLICKED!
AW does not have an image limit as far as storage
goes. We recently had over 4000 images stored, though they will delete those
older than 90 days. And with the AW Management software you can upload photos in
bulk. Tracking auctions is so easy with AW, the will even import buyers into
folders, and you can create mailing lists to notify buyers of sales and the
such.

I hope that this is not too long...anyone can
contact me off list if you have any questions.

If you read this far I thank you for your time and
apologize for this is a bit off topic.

Bright Blessings to all

Mark M.

[meteorite-list] Books For Sale

2001-12-30 Thread SSachs9056

Good afternoon members,

I am in the process of selling a number of duplicate meteorite books as a
group and will entertain the price off list. They are going to be sold as a
group and will not be sold separate. I am offering these to the list group
first, and if not sold, well lets just say I'd hate to see them go on Ebay.
Here then are the following books for sale, with conditons, etc.

1) Catalog of Meteorites in the collections of Arizona State University, 1976
including Ninninger Meteorite Collection by Charles Lewis and Carleton
Moore
Excellent condition, paperback.

2) Stones From the Stars - The Unsolved Mysteries of Meteorites, by T.R.
LeMaire
1980, Excellent shape, w/ dustjacket.

3) Meteorites Stones from the Sky, by R.V. Foder, 1976 / Ex Lib. book. Lots
of great B&W photos. Childrens Book. Good Shape.

4) Thunderstones and Shooting Stars, By Robert T. Dodd, 1986, Hardcover,
Ex-Library. Only one person apparently had taken this book out from library
(one date stamped), so it is in Excellent condition.

5) Meteorite Craters by Kathleen Mark, New Hardcover book. Was a gift from a
family member, and I already had a copy.

6) Meteorites and Their Parent Planets by Harry McSween Jr. Hardcover /
Ex-Library book. Had never been taken out of library (no book stamp dates)
Excellent condition.

7) Minerals from the Earth and Sky #3 in the Smithsonian Series G.P. Merrill
About 6 years ago, I went to the Brandeis University book sale. This sale is
listed as worlds largest used book sale. I found two complete Smithsonian
Sets, new, still in their cardboard carriers. I was fortunate to get the #3
volumes without having to buy the entire collection. This volume is dated
1944, and as you can tell by now, is in prestine condition.

8) Our Stone Pelted Planet by Ninninger. This book was autographed by
Ninninger in February 1949. As the above book is in prestine condition, this
one is not. While every page is readable, there is heavy water damage. I used
this book more as a collection "filler" until a better copy came along. Still
usable though, and it does have the autograph.

9) Out of the Sky and Introduction to Meteoritics by Ninninger. Paperback,
Very Good condition. Because the binding and pages are in such great shape, I
really can't tell if this book was ever read by the original owner.

10) The Fire Came By, The Riddle of the Great Siberian Explosion. by John
Baxter and Thomas Atkins. Nice book about the 1908 Tungusta event. 1976 A bit
dated but a nice addition to any collection. Book in excellent shape. Dusk
jacket complete, but worn with one small rip.

11) Cosmic Collisions by Dana Desonie / from Scientific American series.
Smaller book 128 pages. Easy content. 1996.

OK...there you have it. All 11 books. No duplicates of Krinov unfortunately.
But you know the value of the above. I know the value of the above. Go to
either Amazon or Barnes and Noble and check out the rare book sections for
used books on meteorites and you get the idea.

Please contact me offline if you would be interested in buying this lot. I
have a minimum amount in mind in which I will let these go for, and I will
place a posting to the list on January 1, if the collection has or has not
been sold. I will acknowledge each bid privately. Winning buyer will need to
add $10.00 for postage.

Best to all of you this Holiday Season, and may 2002 be equally wonderful to
you all.

Ebay (The powerseller people) also once told me that they dont even have a record kept of who sent emails through the contact system and that they can only investigate abuse if people sent them the sent emails with complete headers included. Of course just because ebay said that dont mean that it is right but for whatever it is worth that is what they told me.

I do know that eBay does not monitor what goes through their contacts
bidders option. I know that I recently bid on some concert tickets on there
and was contacted by multiple people offering their tickets for sale.
Really annoying though because none of them were very kind when I pointed
out that they were breaking eBay's rules and I had no idea who they were or
if their tickets were legit.

I'm not a lawyer and in no way qualified to comment on contractual law, but
I think it might also fall under interference of contract in a broader legal
setting.
I sure as heck wouldn't do it.
It's too easy to then justify '... now here is an example of a better item
that I happen to be offering.'
I say stick with educating the sellers.
It would be nice to have a broadly useful meteorwrong site where sellers can
be directed to learn about minerals and industrial byproducts commonly
mistaken for meteorites.
...Something along the lines of a gently informative article with
background, general guidelines for distinctions of both meteorites and
meteorwrongs, high quality pictures of the most common meteorwrongs with
detailed descriptions of what they are and where they come from or how they
form, and a section describing where and how they can get an item tested.
Then do up a standard formalized letter that describes who is calling the
item into question, along with their qualifications, and how the person may
redress the problem.
Mention that if they would feel more comfortable ending their auction if
they could recieve a second or third opinion from other qualified persons,
than you can have several other people who have commented on the meteorwrong
contact them as well.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show Accommodation?

2001-12-30 Thread dean bessey

I just checked AOLs site for rooms in Tucson. They gave me many hotels to choose from but the prices were in the $150 to $200 a night range. I have been finding that AOL is a good site pricewise to buy plane tickets and to book rental cars but have never booked a room through them.
For those of you who dont mind driving 60 miles or so you should be able to get a hotel in Nogales starting at about $25 or $30.
Me and Roman went last year and had a rough time getting a hotel but did manage to find one after we arrived. I wouldent advise you doing that though unless you are willing to take a chance on having to sleep at the Toyota Inn.
But no matter what you do the important thing is that you go. It is the worlds premier mineral show and is not to be missed.
Cheers

Re: [meteorite-list] Possible eBay Solution?

2001-12-30 Thread dean bessey

You are partially right on that. A couple years ago you could indeed leave a positive feedback for anybody wither you did an ebay transaction or not (Possibly a nuetral one to - I am not sure on that one). However you could never leave a negative without completing an ebay  transaction. Ebay will also remove feedback if it contains profanity, contact info or comments about a transaction or situation that is not related to ebay. Legal comments are also off limits (ie: you cant say "The police have been notified", or "I will be sueing him") There are likely a couple other reasons in which they would remove it also. If it can be proven that the person does not exist they may or may not remove it. They will tell you that they wont but there is conflicting situations around that. They seem more willing to remove it in that situation for american users than foreign users but confusion reigns around that.
Also if a feedback is left by someone who has opened a new ebay id it might get removed also as it is against rules to open a second user id to leave a negative feedback. It has to be done on your own user id. However, there is no rule against having two or more ebay user ids (As long as there is no interaction between them). So the situation in that case seems vague and open to confusion to me to me also.
But ebay wont make value judgements on wither the feedback is warranted. Also at the current time if a user is suspended from ebay after leaving you a negative feedback the feedback will still stand and is not a reason that ebay will remove it (Even though ebay knows that they are a scumbag). That was different a while ago also.
Sincerely
DEAN

Re: [meteorite-list] Possible eBay Solution?

2001-12-30 Thread Charlie Devine

Hello Dean,

You are probably correct in your reasoning here, but one thing might be
kept in mind. As recently as 2 years ago, it was possible to leave
feedback for someone, whether positive or negative, without the feedback
being connected to an actual auction. I know I received one positive
feedback for an artifact I sold to someone even though no auction was
involved.
The gentleman left me feedback because I had won one of his eBay
auctions, we established a friendship, and he wished to return the
favor.
Of course in time eBay ruled that all feedback must be linked to an
auction, but perhaps the feedback problem Ron Hartman refers to here
occurred prior to their policy change?

Best wishes,
Charlie

Nope. You are wrong on the reason here. There is no way that that could have
happened. I dont know details but ebay will not remove feedback for that
reason that you were away (After all, he did list an auction so any feedback
from it is valid as far as ebay is concerned - you cant receive feedback
without listing an auction. Ebay will let you list an auction if you are in
africa).
They would have removed it for a totally different reason as it violated
ebays feedback rules. Ebay has something called "feedback bombing". If
somebody leaves 3 or more negative feedbacks for somebody ebay considers it
abuse and will remove it. The maximun number of negative feedbacks that you
can leave a seller (Or buyer) is two.
So since this unnamed person had 5 negatives left to him the negatives were
a violation of ebays feedback rules (The " feedback bombing" rule) as so
ebay would be willing to remove it - wither they consider it valid or not.
Sincerely
DEAN

[meteorite-list] Tucson 2001

2001-12-30 Thread Mark Bostick

Hello everybody,

Hope all is enjoying the holiday. I
imagine someone is gathering a list of Tucson attendees?

I am going to fly down on Feb. 5th and will be
returning on Feb. 10th.   I look foward to meeting all that I was not
able to meet at the Denver show.

Looks like this first week of Feb. is the week
most meteorite sellers and buyer will be there and the time most of
the meteorite activities will happen.

I hope that everybody that has a chance to fly or
drive down can make it.  Even during the down week of the terrorist strike
the Denver show was a lot of fun.

Happy New Year all!  Drive safe
tonight!

Can we get a lrolecall of others going to the
show?
