Guys, I too have seen thousands of kilos of these meteorites.
THEY ARE THE SAME!
It is also NWA 787.
I had the first number, NWA 787, then every time I returned to Morocco, more
and more came out, Dean got his classified, Greg and Adam got their
classified etc.
The classes may vary as this is one of if not the largest known stony
meteorite on the planet, and certainly has variation within the mass which
can be found in the fragments.

Incidentally, all my meteorites ( er.uhriver rocks), are
guaranteed to have a Neon Flux value of -1.6 Nfx. That means that the
solar/stellar grain value guarantees that they all have seen a bit on
sunshine in their lifetime. All of my terrestrial stones are so "clean"
that NASA wanted to know how I kept all terrestrial impurities out of my
Soggy-Bottom Stones. Well, that's a question only George W. himself can
answer...maybe Joel Warren if we are lucky. NASA brought all of their
stones back to Earth using a clean capsule, but we found our CRAP
(Chondrule Rampant Anal Peridot) lying in a wash and is much freer from
contamination than those from the NASA ventures which cost billiions of
dollars. Ours were there for a few billion years prior soaking in a
"slight" Texas sewage mixture just for the taking...AKA...Soggy Creek.
Absolutely pristene and free from all contaminants. There are NO
contaminants from our water source either terrestrial or
extra-terrestrial. The stellar grains (which we are numero uno in
search engines) specifically states that these River Rocks are from
some other place other than Texas. Therefore they must be lunar or
martian since we are the neon isotope of the UNITED STATES OF TEXAS!!!

Hello Everyone! We are happy to announce a NEW Saharan Iron-NWA 2677
(prov.)! This exceptional little iron is a new, and particularily
beautiful iron from the Saharan desert. It has been provisionally
classified as a IIICD (it appears to group closely to the IAB subclass
LM). Classification data will be submitted to the Nom. Com. shortly.
Saharan irons are rare and this one is particularly rare with a total
known weight prior to cutting of just 100 grams. After accounting for
the 21 grams being donated to Science as type specimens and cutting
losses, there are only about 60-65 grams available for collectors. This
lovely little iron has moderately high nickel content of 12.8% and is
quite stable. It has a very attractive etch! Please feel free to check
out the photos!

Cassini Shows Grandeur of Two Saturn Moons

New views of two of Saturn's moons, Titan and Tethys,
represent the most detailed look at these moons to date and
show a sharp contrast between them -- one is foggy and one is
cratered.

The Cassini spacecraft captured the puzzle pieces for the full-disc
view of the mysterious Titan during its first close encounter on
Oct. 26, 2004. The mosaic comprises nine images taken at distances
ranging from 650,000 kilometers (400,000 miles) to 300,000
kilometers (200,000 miles).

The pictures are available at http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov ,
http://www.nasa.gov/cassini and http://ciclops.org .

The images that make up the mosaic were processed to reduce
effects of the atmosphere and to sharpen surface features. The
mosaic of images has been trimmed to show only the illuminated
surface and not the atmosphere around the edge of the moon.
The Sun was behind Cassini, so nearly the full disc was
illuminated. South polar clouds are seen at the bottom.

Surface features are best seen near the center of the moon.
The surface features become fuzzier toward the outside of the
image, where the spacecraft is peering through more haze. The
brighter region on the right side near the equator is named
Xanadu Regio. Scientists are debating what processes may have
created the bizarre surface brightness patterns seen there.
Titan's lack of obvious craters is a hint of a young surface.
However, the exact nature of that activity, whether tectonic,
wind-blown, river-related, marine or volcanic, is still
unknown.

Two days after the close encounter with icy Titan, Cassini
captured the images used in the mosaic of the battered and
cratered moon Tethys. The result is the best-ever natural
color view of Titan.

As seen here, the surface of Tethys has a neutral hue. Three
images form this natural color composite. The mosaic reveals
a world nearly saturated with craters -- many small craters
lie on top of older, larger ones, suggesting an ancient
surface. Grooves can be seen at the top and along the boundary
between day and night.

Tethys is known to have a density very close to that of water,
indicating that it is likely composed mainly of water ice.
Its frozen mysteries await Cassini's planned close flyby in
September 2005.

The images to create this mosaic were taken on Oct. 28, 2004,
at a distance of about 256,000 kilometers (159,000 miles) from
Tethys. This view shows the trailing hemisphere of Tethys,
which is the side opposite the moon's direction of motion in
its orbit.

Both images were taken with the narrow angle camera onboard
the Cassini spacecraft. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a
cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the
Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a
division of the California Institute of Technology in
Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's
Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini
orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed
and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space
Science Institute, Boulder, Colo.

solely basing my opinion only on having seen about
1600 kilos of this stuff, I am probably not that
qualified to make an opinion on pairing.

You must be mistaken,

We have not sold NWA 787 for years. This coming from somebody recently
forgiven for using false NWA numbers. Why is that just dealers are
commenting on everything we sell. Could it be the "J" factor?

[meteorite-list] Bees Survived Dino Extinction

2004-11-23 Thread Ron Baalke

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4030933.stm

Bees survived dino extinction
BBC News
November 23, 2004

New evidence shows tropical honeybees survived the post-impact winter 65
million years ago that is thought to have helped kill off the dinosaurs.

An asteroid is thought to have hit our planet at the end of the
Cretaceous Period, throwing up dust that blocked sunlight and dragged
down temperatures.

Honeybees trapped in amber before the asteroid strike are nearly
identical to their modern relatives, data shows.

Details were given at the Geological Society of America's 2004 meeting.

The asteroid or comet that created the Chicxulub impact structure in
Mexico occurs at the boundary between two geological periods: the
Cretaceous and the Tertiary.

This geological boundary marks a mass extinction that wiped out
dinosaurs and many other groups of organisms.

The finding throws up all sorts of questions, researchers say, because
current models of the post-impact winter suggest global temperatures
fell far enough to have killed off honeybees and many of the flowering
plants they lived off.

Modern tropical honeybees have an optimal temperature range of 31-34C
(88-93F) in order to maintain vital metabolic activities.

This is also the range that is best for their food source: nectar-rich
flowering plants.

Temperature sensitive

Based on what is known about the Cretaceous climate and modern tropical
honeybees, Jacqueline Kozisek of the University of New Orleans, US,
estimated that any post-impact winter event could not have dropped
temperatures more than 2-7C (4-13F) without wiping out the bees.

Current theories about the Chicxulub impact winter estimate drops of
7-12C (13-22F) - too cold for tropical honeybees.

If no modern tropical honeybee could have survived years in the dark and
cold without flowering plants, says Kozisek, something must be amiss
with the impact winter theory.

"I'm not trying to say an asteroid impact didn't happen," said Kozisek.
"I'm just trying to narrow down the effects."

Kozisek dug through the scientific literature to find out what survived
the massive extinction event.

"I made a list of all survivors and picked those with strict survival
requirements," said Kozisek.

She determined what those survival requirements were by calling on
studies of the most similar organisms living today.

She found that tropical honeybees had changed little in 65 million years.

Amber-preserved specimens of the oldest tropical honeybee Cretotrigona
prisca are almost indistinguishable from some of their modern
counterparts. This means they could even be their ancestors, researchers
think.

Hello Adam.
Truth is that You and Mike sell most of meteorites on MET Cattegory in US
ebay. Also You Adam sell most of different meteorites so this is NOTHING
SPECIAL that You have the biggest ratio. For example maybe Finmet sells more
auctions for more money, but they sell the same maybe 10 different
meteorites so they will never do this what You just doing. And noone will
comeback to Finmet buying Sikhotes or Brahins week per week.

For example I prepare most beautifull slices from all dealers. My polishing
is the best. No cut marks, rouded edges, I polish to mirror quality also
unclassified stuff. Show me anyone who do this like me. I know this from
specimens from other dealers I have in my collections and from fairs how can
looks some pieces. But I not scream here that Im the best, becouse I'm not.
For me its importand what people will find in box when it arrive to them.
This is why I have also MANY customers who buy from me many pieces in one
time (thank You people). You can see my ebay feedbacks.

I know this is all marketing, but we are not chindrens and everyone know
that You are one of biggest dealers, so You do not need to tell it to us.

at 1 cent. We start many out at a nearly a hundred

i dont need to know who you are or what this is about to make the statement
i did. if we are tlaking about a legal action in the american court system,
it's agains the law for an attorney for the state to do anything beyond
filing a freind of the court petition in civil matters. it's quite simply
impossible that an assistant attorney general would file a motion in a civil
suit. perod. if you would like to cite a case number and and prove me wrong,
please by all means do. furthermore cases that are dismissed without
prejudice still fall underther the law with regards to statutes of
limitations for your jurisdiction. this is simple law my friend, it's not
something that would be particular to any individual case.

"i dont know who you are or what this is about"
We worked closely with the Assistant Attorney General on certain aspects of
the case, so you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Next time
you might want to ask first before you jump to your conclusions. I would
not worry about statutes or any other material detail if I were you. Its on
the desk it needs to be on now.

when you dismiss without prejudice you can NOT refile at any time, you
still have to take action within the statute of limitations, likely 5
years depending on what jurisdiction you are in.

last time i checked attorney generals represent the state, NOT private
parties in civil suits.

My last words on the subject.

I do not comment on other dealer's weekly advertisements and I would like
the same courtesy. These ratios were developed over years not on a single
night's auctions. I qualified the statement by saying the
Meteorite/Tektite subsection, all meteoritelab sells is meteorites. If
these numbers were not important ebay would not give sellers the tools to
monitor such things. They would not recognize sellers with awards if these
ratios meant nothing. The main thing is that collectors are happy with
their purchases.

2004-11-23 Thread MexicoDoug
Hola Bernd,

Thanks, Bernd. I reflected on your thoughts and needed them. I thought up
epithets for a couple dozen list members, but then I reminded myself of what
you said (and perhaps that I might crave a meteorite from them sometime?), and
confidently erased them.

Even though Adam's really and truly was the most entertaining epithet I came up
with of all of the list members, it didn't matter at all Mike, I thought, and I
couldn't help pitying each and every one of us squandering or otherwise our
ephemeral existence in the present form as I look at some petrified hemitized
Cretaceous animal fragments scattered on the floor, and hoped I could grow up
and be one of those someday in a nicely curated institutional collection in the
far future. 'Nuff Said!'

Too bad for you Peter, but that only proves that there is more than a ratio

You must have bought one of the sets. The six meteorites sets are seriously
underweight but after an email there were no problem to get a discount
proportional to the weightloss. Later on he lowered the weight of the sets.
Any single meteorite that I bought has been within my error of measurement.
I also bought some minerals and fossiles that I have sold on and financed
all the meteorites I bought.
One of the meteorites I got was a nice oriented NWA with a perfect lip
around all of the edge. I tried to find somewhere I could cut a window

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad - Two Sets of Auctions Ending -Great Bargains!

2004-11-23 Thread Michael Farmer
Peter, well thank you.
I try to keep everyone happy, and I don't screw around with shipping costs.
I will tell you I had a bad run of eBay buys last week.
I bought 3 items on eBay, and 2 of the sellers ripped me off with shipping.
One item was $5.99 and the seller charged me $6 shipping, sent it first
class here in the USA for 85 cents. Not bad for the seller, MORE profit on
the shipping scam than he made selling the item.
The other charged me $5.00 for Priority mail (in the USA that is a faster
mail service and the fee was correct). The problem, he sent it first class
as well, again, making 90% profit on the shipping cost.
These were not meteorites, so no worry there.
But I see alot of meteorite sellers advertising $4.99 or $5 shipping even
for small items.
Come on, that is a sheer rip-off when a bubble envelope for small items or
irons (which can not be damaged) are fine and shipping is usually about $.49
to $1.00.
Gladly serving my eBay customers since 1996.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite surface temperature revisited

2004-11-23 Thread Matson, Robert
On another topic, S. Ray DeRusse opined:

Incorrect. Generated heat has little to do with the meteoroid
composition.

> That is to say the higher the metal content the hotter to the
> touch.duh.

This is a different claim and a misleading statement since it
doesn't address the question of ~why~ a meteorite with higher
metal content would be warmer to the touch (a statement which
isn't true, by the way, in all cases). Far more important than
the metal content of a meteorite to its surface temperature
(shortly after landing) is its volume.

> That means that stony meteorites will only be warm to the

Small iron-nickel meteorites might be warm or even hot to the
touch; larger ones will be significantly cooler. Stony meteorites
are much more likely to be ice-cold than warm due to significant
ablation.

Cheers,

[meteorite-list] BCC and Sales Ratios

2004-11-23 Thread bernd . pauli
Please, stop that silly talk about BCC (blind carbon copy ?)
and sales ratios, what should, what will it lead to? More
animosities, more hate, more hate mails, ... less fun, less
potential new collectors (because they will be p... off) by
such a lot of childish pseudo-argumentation.

For heaven's sake, when I came to school this morning, I had
to cope with the sad news that one of my teacher collegues is
gone for good ... 61 years only. We talked about retiring a few
weeks ago. He was so happy he would retire in about two years
(me in about 3 or four years) and then be able to enjoy the few
days he would still be allowed to be around.

I have bought great meteorites from both parties, there have been
great deals and bargains, both parties involved in this vain struggle
have become gargantuan meteorite sellers with great items, with a
dedicated love for meteorites, ... and they are sellers!

Think about it and enjoy what life still has to give
you because we should know (and remember) our days
are counted ... whether we like it or not ...

Mike,

Always trying to get the last word in. You start many of your auctions out
at 1 cent. We start many out at a nearly a hundred times greater amount, 99
cents. If you do not realize how important this ratio is, you should take
some courses in business management. We are collectors first and foremost,
and dealers secondary. We feel it is great share some of our discoveries, a
lot of them at a loss. The amount we make on ebay comes no where near the
amount needed to support our avocation. As matter of fact you may be happy
to hear that there is a 99% chance we will be shutting down meteoritelab and
our weekly rare material specials in a few months so that we can focus
full-time on our collection.

2004-11-23 Thread Bernhard Rems
Mike is right (maybe not with the wording, but regarding the matter).

The numbers you presented reflect the number of items per auction
session more than the return traffic of customers.

The more auctions you list per night, the higher the ration number of
feedback: number of unique customers will be.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad - Two Sets of Auctions Ending - GreatBargains!

2004-11-23 Thread Michael Farmer
I am not arguing, I find this ration to be life-changing data (really, I
will make all ebay purchased decisions based on this new data, not the items
offered). I will redouble my efforts to list a hundred of the same meteorite
on eBay, thus selling more, thus getting more feedback, this giving the lame
impression of being the best seller.
If I put 1000 items up for 99 cent buy-it-nows, they would all sell, and I
would get alot of feedback.
The name argument was one with meaning, this is retarded.

You would have to if you claim to be the best.

are is getting old to me and alot of other people. We are all dealers.

You guys are getting more and more IN-Your-Face with this retarded best
sellers (I mean Collectors) in the business. Adam, who really cares, you
sell I sell we all sell.
The only thing you need advertise is your material, nothing else.

Adam, I know what you are talking about, but that is BULLPUCKEY, are you
telling me that you did that for every seller of meteorites?
You would have to if you claim to be the best.
Myself, I have a 7.1
Of course it is totally flawed since most buyers who have already left
feedbacks do not bother to continue to leave them, as they really do not
affect the feedback score.
Any other ways to try and make it seem like you are the best seller out
there?
I thought you were just collectors? You sure don't try to market that
way.

AW: [meteorite-list] Ad - Two Sets of Auctions Ending - GreatBargains!

2004-11-23 Thread Bernhard Rems
But your rating is only 99.9%

:-)

Bernhard

BTW - it's not that easy, Adam. Your calculation assumes that each
rating is independent. It could also mean that each customer buys 7
items per auction night and never returns.

So I would say your claim stands on feet of clay. At least it is the
most positive assumption possible, not the realistic one.

Mike,

A good measure of customer satisfaction is how many times customers repeat
business. It is very simple to figure out, divide total number of positive
feedback by unique feedback and our ratio is over 7 to 1, the best by far in
the meteorite/tektite subsection. This means that on the average a customer
will repeat business with us at least seven times. Anybody who understands
customer satisfaction will tell you this is the most important ratio in the
business.

[meteorite-list] slabbed meteorites

2004-11-23 Thread joseph_town
Hi all,

I sure could have worded that post better. I meant to say, I think it would be
very profitable if a dealer or a consortium of dealers, collectors and
scientists could get together and slab meteorites. It would solve a lot of the
arguments regarding authenticity, if the people in charge were of the highest
integrity and qualifications of course. Slabbed and sealed specimens with a
database like
PSA has for sports cards would set a high standard and there would be no
questions about numbers. The specimens would be forever documented in a data
base like PSA does and preserved in air tight containers. Provenance could also
be preserved. I don't think the type of grading that companies like PSA do
would be possible with meteorites but you would know exactly what you're
buying. Just another option for purist collectors.

Best Regards,

Bill

Mr. DeRusse, what is the deal, let's get it out in the open right now.
You seem to think that the entire world is conspiring against you to deny
you the fame and fortune of owning the moon and mars ranch.
Why?
For a conspiracy, the people (scientists) must gain something from it.
No one seems to gain anything from conspiring against you.
Why do you keep this up? You stones are not meteorites, SIMPLE.
Now please leave the meteorite world alone and find another list to debate

Matteo;
We think your implying that we fabricated any email from Dirk Ross is
preposterous and absurd. We have no reason to fabricate analytical data,
emails or anything from anyone for that matter. I suppose you think we
fabricated the email below from Dr. Oliver Manuel to Bill Cutler in which
he agrees with us and welcomes some measure of controls on rogue
scientists? Is that what you think? We realized the level of absurdity
from you and many others when you endlessly debated whether a meteorite
fall is hot to the touch back in 2002. You guys endlessly debated this
issue and some trained scientists even weighed in on the issue but only
served to cloud it. Since ya'll never settled it let me tell you the heat
generated by a meteorite fall is proportional to the metal content. That
is to say the higher the metal content the hotter to the touch.duh.
That means that stony meteorites will only be warm to the touch whereas
iron-nickel meteorites will be hot. Good luck and stop being so absurd and
preposterous.

From Dr. Oliver Manuel;
Thanks, Bill, for the message.
I wish NASA's new policy might correct the problem.
Science rests on one of the oldest spiritual truths, e.g. from the
Upanishads, "Truth is victorious, never untruth."
It appears NASA officials mistakenly believed for decades that good
PR (public relations) is more important than truth.
NASA held the purse strings and misconduct from NASA spread into
peripheral organizations.
For example, how much NASA money, how many pages of MAPS and GCA, and
how many hours of Lunar Science Conference time has been devoted to
questionable but flashy discoveries like AN ALPHABET OF NEONS (Ne-A,
Ne-B, Ne-C, Ne-D, Ne-E, etc.), SUPER-HEAVY ELEMENTS, INTERSTELLAR
DIAMONDS, STAR DUST, etc. while more mundane explanations (MASS
FRACTIONATION, LOCAL ELEMENT SYNTHESIS, etc.) were ignored and/or
excluded from publication?
What is the result?
1. NASA - the world's premier space agency - failed to appreciate
that samples from the Apollo mission clearly revealed severe mass
separation in the Sun. There is little doubt about this conclusion.
See "Composition of the Solar Interior: Information from Isotope
Ratios"
http://www.umr.edu/~om/abstracts2002/soho-gong2002.pdf
http://www.umr.edu/~om/abstracts2002/soho-gong2002.ps
2. NASA - the world's premier space agency - failed to appreciate
that the Galileo probe into the atmosphere of Jupiter confirmed that
material there is unlike that in the Sun. See Ken Windler's report
on "strange" xenon isotopes in Jupiter.
 http://www.umr.edu/~om/abstracts2001/windleranalysis.pdf
In 1983 we noted that the Galileo mission to Jupiter would find
"strange" xenon there, if we were correct in concluding that the Sun
is iron-rich from the Apollo mission to the Moon ["Solar abundance of
the elements", Meteoritics 18, 209-222].
NASA's engineering has been great, but its science has been a dismal
failure. Unfortunately, scientific journals share some of the blame.
With kind regards,
Oliver K. Manuel

Was this a meteorite?
By NIGEL ADLAM
news.com.au (Australi)
November 24, 2004

Territory scientists were last night studying what could be the first
photograph of a meteorite hitting Earth.

The chances of an impact being captured on film are millions to one.

``If this is true, it's one of the most remarkable pictures ever
taken,'' astronomy tutor Geoff Carr said yesterday.

The photograph was taken by keen amateur photographer Wayne Pryde as he
stood near the Darwin Cenotaph on The Esplanade and looked down to Fort
Hill Wharf on Monday evening.

The meteorite, which could have been as small as a grain of sand, would
have been travelling about 30,000km/h.

Mr Pryde believes a tiny piece of space rock hit the top of a 20m lamp
post on the wharf.

He said the explosion on impact could be seen clearly in the photograph.

The ``tube'' created by the meteorite as it hurtled towards Earth is
harder to pick out.

``I was taking a series of time-lapse pictures of the build-up of
clouds,'' Mr Pryde said.

``I did not realise I had snapped the meteorite until later.''

The wharf lamp bulb was yesterday found to be blown but the top of the
post will not be checked for damage until today.

Experts believe the meteorite may not have hit the lamp post, but metal
elsewhere on the wharf.

Mr Pryde, 31, is an IT expert but he denied the photograph had been
digitally altered.

Photographic experts also said the shot had not been doctored.

Mr Carr, who teaches at Charles Darwin University, said the picture
would create interest among astronomers worldwide.

He said most of the thousands of meteors heading towards Earth burnt up
before landing.

``Nobody has ever photographed one hitting Earth,'' he said.

Mr Carr said the explosion could have been caused by lightning.

``But I doubt this very much _ the trajectory is too straight,'' he said.

[meteorite-list] Deep Impact's Launcher Begins To Take Shape

2004-11-23 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.spaceflightnow.com/delta/d311/041122stacking.html

Deep Impact's launcher begins to take shape
BY JUSTIN RAY
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
November 22, 2004

The Delta launch team at Cape Canaveral had little time to rest after
Saturday's successful liftoff of NASA's Swift observatory as the crew
begin erecting another rocket Monday that will dispatch an extraordinary
mission to Comet Tempel 1 on December 30.

The $320 million Deep Impact mission will rendezvous with the comet on
July 4 and fire an 820-pound copper bullet into the heart of Tempel 1,
carving out a stadium-sized crater. Sophisticated instruments and
cameras on the Deep Impact's mothership will record the blast and
analyze the materials excavated.

"We're doing this to discover the comet's structure and makeup," said
Rick Grammier, NASA's Deep Impact project manager. "This is like
swinging an 820-pound slug of copper at this thing and seeing what
happens."

Buried inside the hearts of these rocky snowballs are pristine building
blocks left over from the solar system's creation. Deep Impact will
provide an unprecedented glimpse at the comet's interior materials that
have been frozen in time for billions of years.

"What we see coming out of comets as gas and dust is stuff that has been
modified because it is very near the surface, and every time the comet
goes around the sun the surface gets heated. So there have been changes
in the surface layers...What I really want to do is figure out how
different the surface is from what's inside," said Michael A'Hearn,
astronomer from the University of Maryland and the Deep Impact principal
investigator.

Scientists expect the materials thrown out of the freshly bored hole
will settle within a few minutes, permitting good visibility into the
crater. The mothership has less than 14 minutes to make its observations
while zooming toward the comet before passing by Tempel 1 at a distance
of 300 miles.

The first stage of the Delta 2 rocket to launch Deep Impact was hoisted
atop pad 17B on Monday, just 48 hours after another Delta 2 roared away
from neighboring pad 17A carrying NASA's Swift gamma-ray observatory.

The blue-green stage was hauled to the pad on a specially-outfitted
trailer. A crane in the pad's mobile service tower grabbed the stage and
lifted it upright. The tower then wheeled into position over the pad
deck, allowing the stage to be lowered into the pedestal mount.

The nine strap-on solid rocket boosters will be attached to the stage in
sets of three on Tuesday, next Monday and next Wednesday.

The second stage is scheduled for mating atop the first stage next Friday.

Meanwhile, the Deep Impact spacecraft is undergoing final preparations
for launch at the Astrotech Space Operations facility near Titusville.
It arrived in Florida from the Ball Aerospace factory in Boulder,
Colorado, on October 23.

Technicians are performing the Functional and Mission Readiness testing,
which is scheduled for completion Tuesday. The tests involve the main
mothership, the comet impactor, science instruments and the basic
subsystems.

The high gain antenna used for spacecraft communications will be
installed next Monday. The solar arrays will then be stowed and an
illumination test performed as a final check of its performance on
Tuesday. Deep Impact will be set for fueling the following week.

After being joined with the solid-propellant motor that serves at the
Delta's third stage, the spacecraft will be transported to pad 17B and
placed atop the rocket.

Launch is scheduled for 2:39:42 p.m. EST (1939:42 GMT) December 30, the
opening of a 30-day window to send the craft on its trajectory to the
comet.

Project officials say there is no suitable backup launch opportunity if
Deep Impact missed its window to Tempel 1.

Discovered in 1867 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel, this comet
currently circles the sun every 5.5 years. Its orbit lies between Mars
and Jupiter, providing the Deep Impact mission a perfect target for
reaching with a modest launch vehicle, striking at high speed and being
visible from Earth at impact about 80 million miles away.

:-))) Well, but such data and coordinates can also prove useful
because you can then filter that one out much more efficiently and
correct its coordinates: another instance of why pictures sometimes
speak a thousand words. It is very difficult to recognize such errors
when you just see hundreds or thousands of coordinates. I've also
come across such "discrepant" find locations when I plotted 313 Acfer
coordinates with the help of Microsoft Powerpoint some years ago.

Get a life.

Matteo;

I doubt there is any that is legally available for collectors now that the
Feds have stepped in. I am pretty sure all the Willamette meteorite is
claimed and ratified by a US Federal Court as a native religious artifact
by the consolidated tribes in Oregon and thus subject to return to them.
They have claimed ownership of the "main mass" in the New York
Planetarium and in a legal agreement they have placed the main mass on loan
rather than tear down the whole thing to get it out.

If it just came from Europe-- Shouldn't it be seized in customs? Sure it
is a ittsy bitty amount-- 45 grams as compared to the main mass but those
Native Americans were pretty successful and almost made the City of New
York tear down the planetarium. I don't think they would tear down your
house , Steve. However now that they know you know where it is they will
probably ask the FBI to seize it since it has been recognized in a US
Court as a native artifact. But if it were me I'd go for it and fight
them in court. You might fair better being a single individual rather
than being the city of New York.

You might be able to get the recognized owners to let you keep it on loan
if you can trade them beaver pelts or something else they need. Maybe you
could buy it and let the contact in Europe keep it for you and you can go
visit it. I don't think the US law directly applies to Europeans. To get
an artifact returned for overseas the owner has to go through a UN Agency
and it would take a few years for them to act maybe.

Good Luck Let us know how the trade goes.

I would like all my fellow List members to be made aware of something

The suit was -- of course -- thrown out by the judge for being utterly

Greetings List;
I would like respond to Mr. Notkin. Mr. Notkin you prove that if you
wnat to get your facts straight you have to go to the source. Yes we did
file a lawsuit sometime back against numerous individuals when we
discovered they interfering with some others we were working with on the
meteorite project. Its a well known fact that certain individuals have
been operating against us.
You obviously were lied to by your friend we sued. WE filed a motion to
dismiss the lawsuit after two of the defendants agreed to complete their
contracts with us. WE did it, no Judge dismissed anything. We filed a
motion to dismiss without prejudice that means we can go back at
anytime. Do you understand that? We instructed the Assistant Attorney
General to draft it up, we signed it and filed it once two of the
defendants came forward to spill the beans. We that means us Mr. Notkin.
Now as far the samples, and being told nicely about anything. First of
all if the samples were not authentic why would UT try to steal the ones
that were in left in the lab with them? It was not until we blew the
whistle on them that this controversy began to get out of hand. If you
think that all scientists are honest and do not lie, cheat, and steal,
having same, similar or different motives, Mr. Notkin I have news for
you, you too are in living world that does not exist. I would hope that
you know the difference between a typographical error and an actual
misspelling, but for some people, thinking on their own is a lot of
work. Good luck Mr. Notkin and I really mean that.

Dear Mr. DeRusse,
I have been doing research since 1980. But, my last
research was last year at Yamaguchi University in
Japan.
I have read most of your writings on the internet.
You certainly are an educated person. I can
understand your wish for students and scientists to
think "outside" of the box. I agree with you on this
point. I always ask and demand my students to think
independently so that science can advance what is
known.
I apologize for my initial judgement about you
before knowing more about the whole story. Keep up
your search for fact. About truth, I leave that for
God. Sincerely, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

Re: [meteorite-list] French meteorite wanted !

2004-11-23 Thread Zelimir Gabelica
Hi Pierre-Marie,
An impressive want list indeed (I understand your "ouf").
Note that these meteorites are (probably) virtually not available to
collectors.

As also a lover of French meteorites I could have built exactly the same
want list either (except a 12 g Hainaut (trade) and small (symbolic) chips
of Kerilis, Lançon and St Mesmin that I happened, often by chance, to acquire).

I believe these meteorites are sitting in some Frebch museums (and/or
elsewhere as well ?) somewhere "behind the curtain" for ages, with
(probably) no chances for sale/trade. I hope I am wrong and that the
concerned curators are reading our posts.

But I agree that if you never ask a question, for sure, you'll never get an
answer. Perhaps some of us from the list can help you ?
Good luck and if you succeed for some, let me know, I a ready to
purchase/trade some of the remainings, if any...

I am being answering your other concerns (about the next Ensisheim meeting)
off list. I will then notify the list soon for the official anouncement of
"Ensisheim 2005"

Best to all,
Zelimir

Bernhard and list,

beautiful piece indeed - and well displayed in your fine gallery.

But according to the coordinates and nomenclature the find location of
Dhofar 535 should be the "Dhofar" region and not Jiddat al Harasis
("JAH").

best wishes

Svend

I was attempting to be sarcastic.
ah - it's late here too and i must have missed it.
I mistook Bill's comments to be an attack
on profiteering. I'd rather pay the $7/g because I know there's a lot of
value added from of all the effort it takes to have the testing, cutting
etc. done. I'd rather spend what free time I do have on prospecting and
meteorite hunting around here (and so have that lower paying stable job
most
of us settle for) and leave Morocco to those who have the necessary drive
it
takes to succeed.
FWIW you dont have to be a hard core meteorite dealer with 30 trips overseas
under your belt to be able to buy out of morocco.. it's something that
really anyone can do.
