[meteorite-list] Young chondrules in Gujba and HaH237 - Where is the beef?

2005-08-28 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi list,

I read again the posts and links about that sensational discovery of young
chondrules and the subsequent revolution for the theory of the formation of
the solar system,
but I have the problem, that nowhere the ages are given - did I miss them?

Bernhard sent me the abstract of the article in Nature, there I find the
ages in billions of years:

CAIs: 4,567.2 +/- 0.7 Myr
Gujba: 4,562.7 +/- 0.5 Myr
HaH 237:4,562.8 +- 0.9 Myr

Further it says, that the process of chondrule formation lasted about 3
Myr and shortly started after that of the CAIs.
If you then additionally add the given error margins of their values,
then the stuff was built at the same time, as other chondrules too!

That would be not remarkable or did I miss some figures?

Never going to happen. The tucson show has too big of a draw to worry about
saving a few bucks on the room. Dealers would lose money in the long run.

Hi list

Have been checking hotel rates and I found that Laughlin Nevada has
$25/night Sunday-Thursday and $49/night Friday and Saturday rates during
the Cloud's jamboree with special rates for vendors at some hotels.

Its too late I'd think to change from Tucson to Laughlin for the upcoming
show, but for 2007, I'd like to see some serious thought put towards the
move of the meteorite show.

Cloud's jamboree has long been a major rock and gem show and combined with
the GLW wholesale show, it provides for many vendors and buyers from
around the world, not to mention the tourist trade.

With many (thousands) of rooms just in the casino hotels, nearby Kingman
and Needles also offer hotels and an easy commute, finding a place to stay
shouldn't be the problem like at Tucson

The only drawback is flights which either put you into Kingman or Las
Vegas. But still, would be minor when a flight and car to Nevada are under
$400 r/t

[meteorite-list] AD - meteorite sale - new type 3 from NWA

2005-08-28 Thread Gibeon
Hallo List,

for all of you who are interested, I want to offer you a brand new meteorite
from NWA.
This meteorite is under classification and will have it´s own NWA number soon.
There were 10 meteorites with a TKW of only 209 grams. I bought the whole lot
of all what was available.
The matrix is overloaded with chondrules. My best guess what it could be is a
H3.X because it is more atracting to a magnet than a L-meteorite, but only the
classification will tell at last for sure what it realy is.
Every buyer will get the whole classification details from me after I received
the infos from the insitute.

Here is the link to click on it, or to copy into your browser.

[meteorite-list] Something stange

2005-08-28 Thread Moser Francesco

Hi All,
some week ago I went to the home of the finder of many famous DaG meteorite,
like 489 669 670 671 and many more.
In DaG he found this strange volcanic bomb:

http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/DSCN4104.JPG
http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/DSCN4105.JPG

As you can see on one side of this bomb there are some strange greenish
crystals.

At a first look this material looks like Libic Desert Glass Remember
that the DaG is several hundred Km far from the region of the Glass.
I think the crystals are too big to be terrestrial Olivine.
Can the Desert Glass be a normal terrestrial volcanic glass like Oxidian,
not

correlate with meteor impact??? Any idea ??
I hope I can show to you this amazing sample at the Munich Mineral Show.

Bye and thanks

Dear Mark and List:

I'm not familiar with Cloud's Jamboree, but would like to be. Do you
know the dates for that show, or is there a website? If so, please
forward, I'd like to check it out. Does this show take place in
Laughlin?

Its too late I'd think to change from Tucson to Laughlin for the
upcoming show, but for 2007, I'd like to see some serious thought put
towards the move of the meteorite show.

The Gem show has been running in Tucson for 51 years. It's a huge
moneymaker for the promoters and the city, and it's not going to move
to another town just so visitors can maybe get cheaper hotel rooms,
though having paid some hefty hotel bills here in the past, I do
sympathize with you.

rant

Rooms in Tucson are cheap now -- you can get a nice suite next to the
pool for $49/night. As you know, they go up drastically during the show
due to the greed of hotel owners and promoters who squeeze every penny
they can out of visiting dealers and buyers. Even a single at the
crummy Super 8 on Frontage Road costs $89/night + a high occupancy tax
during the show -- if you're lucky.

There has been a lot of unofficial grumbling about the show from
certain dealers, and they have every right to grumble, especially this
past year (Feb. 2005) when so many were moved to new locations,
mistreated by promoters, and forced to set up in useless hotels with no
walk-in traffic, miles away from the main show. In addition, vendors
are harassed by state officials over the use of non-regulated digital
scales and sales tax issues.

The Gem show is the biggest event of the year for us here in Tucson.
Every hotel room in town is booked, and every decent restaurant is
packed night after night. IMO the city should be very grateful for this
gigantic income and do more to help visiting vendors, instead of
hassling them. Also, it would be nice if JUST ONCE they suspended road
work downtown for those two weeks. Another peeve of mine is the gang of
urchins who charge $5 to park on some patch of waste ground next to the
highway which is vacant for the rest of the year. The show promoters
are making enough money -- they need to provide adequate free parking
and better shuttle bus service.

/rant

A few suggestions for show visitors looking to save money:

- Buddy up with two or three of your pals, and get a big suite in a
nicer hotel. It ends up being cheaper per person, plus you can throw
some monster parties.

- Stay at one of the motels on the outskirts of town -- off the
highway (I-10). There are a number to choose from and they are a little
cheaper (Motel 6 in South Tucson, which we used to call Motel Hell,
In-Town Suites on Ina, etc.).

- Camp outside the city and drive in each day.

- Find a motel in a neighboring town, like Benson, and commute to the
show each morning by car. You have to really like driving for this to
work.

- Stay at one of the cheap dodgy Bates Motel motels on Miracle Mile
or North Oracle. Steve Arnold IMB and I had to do that one time and we
got a room with no bed sheets for $50 cash. I have friends who stay
every year at the No-Tel Motel on N. Oracle and they always *do* have
some stories to tell.

- Crash on Blaine Reed's floor (sorry Blaine, just kidding).

- Stay at my house like everybody else -- oops, sorry already full up
for next year

Or . . . do what I did and just move here. Then the room prices aren't
even an issue : )

With many (thousands) of rooms just in the casino hotels, nearby
Kingman and Needles also offer hotels and an easy commute, finding a
place to stay shouldn't be the problem like at Tucson

I can hardly believe there are more hotel rooms in Laughlin than
Tucson. Greater Tucson has a population of ~1,000,000; Laughlin ~8,000.

Another reason the Tucson show is a lasting success is because people
like coming here, especially in the winter. Tucson is a great city with
a fascinating history and all kinds entertainment and cultural options.
No offense to Laughlin, which is fun for a night out at the casino, but
you can't compare it to Tucson.

Whatever you do, may I suggest that you book your rooms way in advance.
It is always very difficult to get any kind of a room around showtime,
and no you can't camp in my yard, sorry. We have wild bobcats and I
don't want to have to clean up the mess in the morning : )

Best wishes, and I hope to see you in February.

Dear Listoids,

Anybody has an idea what Nantan is really classified?
When you look around you you can see that for example in Meteorites from

say so. In the Holy book of Richard Norton it's an IIICD and in Marvin
Killgores book it's an IIIC (???).
Now when there will be a respond here i suppose i will get all these types
again as an answer from different people. What is the right answer?

Hello Jan,

Are you ready for another different answer? According to J. Wasson and
G. Kallemeyn, who are the experts in iron meteorite classification, they
have revised its classification (as well as the other IAB-IIICD irons)
and now describe Nantan as IAB complex MG (main group). I believe Marvin
was correct prior to this revision for what it's worth.

I would suggest we send 500 emails to these people with some well-chosen
suggestions, and I also hope they have been reported to the Tucson BBB as
well.
If it were me, I would make noises to the local CofC suggesting these kinds
of businesses be run out of town. If enough people bothered to complain
about all the business scams there would be fewer of them. We and everyone
else drop enough money at these conventions that the city can at least clean
up the town.

It would be a good thing for anyone else to let us all know of any other
local scammers to avoid. And conversely, any especially good experiences
with responsible local vendors.

Hi Ron and List,

My guess is that I touched some nerves with my last posting to the List
about the con artists at Econo Lodge Tucson. I just received numerous
responses in a matter of minutes. This incident left a bad taste in our
mouths at the show but we were lucky to get a really crappy room in a bad
part of town within a few hours only to find out we could have stayed across
the street cheaper in a better place. It was not a good start to the show
but we managed to have a great time despite these bad people.

I spent months writing letters to anybody who would listen about the
incident including that corporate office of Econo Lodge who permanently
filed my complaint on their record. I sent emails to Triple A. who also
said they would look into it. I sent a complaint to Hotels.com who did not
do a thing about it. Only after taking legal action with my credit card
company did anything happen. It probably took over a hundred hours of phone
calls, letter writing and emails to get my money back. I asked the credit
card company if they would file a criminal complaint and they said no. These
crooks probably know nothing will happen to them from a criminal standpoint
and will continue this unsavory practice. Welcome to America where you can
get away with grand larceny with no criminal consequences.

I was glad to have my money credited back because it was a very frustrating
and time consuming process that I could barely spare the time for. I just
want make others aware so they don't run into the same problems.

Kind Regards,

Adam
