Re: [meteorite-list] nut bag reporting award Wisconsin

2010-04-22 Thread Brian Cox
Mineral Point is the largest town East of Livingston and a big town for
tourists to visit and stay in for surrounding tourist attractions. They used
it basically in the article since most people in Wisconsin, nor in Illinois,
nor Iowa have any idea where Livingston is since it only has 697 people or
so and certainly no one in the rest of the US or outside the US have ever
heard of Livingston, Wisconsin. I have friends that I visited in Iowa
county, the county where Mineral Pt. is, for 15 years and never heard of
it, but have been through Mineral Point.

I could tell you were Alice Springs is at in Australia and Mt. Fuji is in
Japan and where the Seychelles and The Maldives are, but no idea where
Livingston is if I hadn't heard of it since April 14th.

Livingston and the surrounding area is a spot on the road if you ask the
guys that are out there. They go up to Dodgeville to get gas even. The
article used it as a reference point since that entire Southwest corner of
Wisconsin is mostly farmland, grazing and some woods. The specimen the man
is holding looks exactly like all the other specimens that have been found
this past week, about 2 dozen, roughly. Madison WI is the largest town in
the area where the University of Wisconsin is, the largest university in the
area. Racine, Wisconsin is a smaller city along Lake Michigan just south of
Milwaukee. It could be worth a couple of thousand USDs depending on how much
is found and the demand for this meteorite.

2010-04-22 Thread Brian Cox
Dirk is correct in his post. If you recall an article by a writer on Sunday,
I believe from the Madison Wisconsin paper, where she states and quotes a
professor and scientist at the U of Wisconsin at Madison who was accepting
specimens

and telling farmers to not trust the meteorite collectors because they
would buy them and sell them at a higher price.

This of course is apparently biased on the part of the U of W, probably
where the girl went to school. I personally don't trust a lot of people up
there.
People are friendly in Wisconsin, but they are friendly everywhere,
depending on their nature and you have to take each with a grain of salt so
to speak.

Could this be why apparently so few stones have been found so far? The
hunters are actually looking at the light end of the field and the large
stones are still 20+ miles down range?

Hi Dirk,

I have to agree with Richard -- I find no real fault with
the article.
The stone pictured does indeed look like a meteorite from
this fall.
Just west of Mineral Point is a perfectly believable
meteorite
landing point, particularly if just west of means a
couple miles.

I don't think people appreciate how long this strewn field
will
eventually turn out to be. The entry angle on the meteoroid
was
less than 10 degrees from horizontal, and for even a
single
fragmentation event at an altitude of 28 km, my model
spreads
meteorites in the 3-gram to 10-kilo mass range over 20
miles.
Since there were additional fragmentations below 28 km,
the
strewn field is likely to be longer still.

I guess I don't see why you're calling it nutbag or
lunacy.
While Mineral Point does seem a too far east of Livingston,
but the
article states a none explicit just west of...

130 grams at $20 per gram = $2600, so the value of
thousands
sounds reasonable.

What am I missing?

My apologies for two posts in short order

At least it's not the usual repetitive sales ads or crap from Jeff but if

where I am

I've done a news webpage edit in quick and dirty fashion tonite - I'll
fixee fixee the background and weblinks tomorrow... and I still have to
update the Queensland Falls (I really should change this to falls and
finds or another form of wording one of these days) with details of my
accession of the small but cute 117.2 g Mussel Waterhole find

It really really gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to repatriate the odd
specimen or two... they do yearn to be back home with all their mates...
if any listoids can assist with repatriating any other unclassified
Queensland meteorites - you know where I am...

I had hoped to overtake the number of finds/falls in other Australian

2010-04-22 Thread countdeiro
Thanks for the post, Jeff. Hi Graham and Listees.

Graham has said that probably not the first...see here..

I have seen this extraordinary photo before and I considered that an
overpressure might have caused the effect depicted, as did the scientists
reporting that phenomenon as one of the three possibilities, but I dismissed it
because the chances of a perfect circle wave of equal overpressure dissipating
a cloud formation at the height depicted is unlikely as the shock waves
repeatedly generated at the Icelandic event don't appear to disturb any of the
condensate, or gasses, present and that observations of the shockwaves
generated by the detonation of chemical and nuclear explosives show that rather
than dissipate condensation...they create it...big time.

Good Morning All! True, Livingston is a little known town in Wisconsin,
but is very rich in history. The town was founded by F.Hugh Livingston,
my wife's Great Great Grandfather. His linage includes Sam Livingston,
founder of Calgary, Canada and Dr. David Livingston, explorer of Africa.
If you are a Livingston or a Watson, I have the family tree back to
John Livingston, born 1754. So, needless to say, my wife and I would
love to see the new fall named Livingston. If would be easier for
me to justify buying a sample too. :-)

What a nice and uplifting story. Just goes to show that meteorites can be
missed by good hunters and found later by anybody.  Congratulations to the boy
- a future meteorite hunter I'm sure.

One boy actually found a meteorite while the TV cameras were still there.

[meteorite-list] Livingston, Wisconsin's Wikipedia Entry for the April 14th Meteorite Fall Needs Revision

2010-04-22 Thread Paul H.
Dear Friends,

The Wikipedia for page for Livingston, Wisconsin is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livingston,_Wisconsin

Maybe someone can create a more substantial entry for the April 14, 2010
meteorite fall than the one sentence that currently exists on this web page?

I do not know enough about what is going to do it myself.

[meteorite-list] More backstory on the schoolyard find

After Terry Boudreaux and I gave a two hour presentation to more than 500 kids
at the Grant-Iowa County school yesterday, we asked all the kids who was going
to hunt for meteorites during recess. Of course all the children screamed and
raised their hands. Minutes later, while news crews were shooting footage and
doing interviews with us in the schoolyard, a 6 year old boy screamed he found
a meteorite, which was a beautiful and perfect 100% crusted ~40 gram stone.

The school went crazy and another stone was found by a young girl a little
while later. It was amazing to speak to the school, and every child there saw
or heard the meteorite go overhead. I think that all these kids will be
searching for meteorites now. The 8th-grade science teacher at the school told
me he dropped his teaching plans for the next week and has moved his classes
into researching meteorites on the net and doing reports on meteorites and
meteorite falls. He was so happy at all of this and said that the children are
so excited to come to class since the fall last week and did not want to talk
about anything but the meteorite anyway so he went with it. I was mobbed by
kids wanting to talk about my trips to Africa and how to find meteorites, so I
think a few old falls may turn up on the farms from all this.

To bridge the gap between meteorite dealers and scientific institutions, I
presented one of the stones I found as a gift to the Field Museum for the
meteorite collection.

The Mifflin meteorite was great, but pressing projects have forced me to leave
the strewnfield and go home today, leaving the country again tomorrow. Thanks
most to Terry for getting this fall so much media attention, and to Michael
Johnson for tirelessly precessing raw photos direct from the field and posting
them, the list can now see meteorites moments after they are found.

[meteorite-list] Wisconsin Meteorite: A Very well written article in the Wisconsin State Journal Paper

2010-04-22 Thread Brian Cox
This is an excellent article that was written in the Wisconsin paper that
honestly make me very happy and puts Meteorite Collectors in a very positive
and bright light. This writer got to the heart of the story by writing about
the children and their families and their farms and how Michael Farmer and
Terry Boudreaux went to the local combined school for Grant-Iowa counties on
the border of the two counties and spoke at the Iowa/Grant Elementary-Middle
School and gave a talk and discussion and interaction with the children on
the new Wisconsin meteorite fall. Congratulations to our Meteorite Hunting
friends and the school and farmers and the cook and his wife where one of
the first meteorites were found on their farm. I salute you all for great
work in the field and your humanitarian work.

He's only in town a short time and then is off on another adventure, but you
could tell by sound of his voice that he was really jazzed to speak with the

He said it was one of the most exciting things that has happened to him in all
the years hes been hunting meteorites.

He also told me that several more stones have been found by well known hunters
in the past day or so, so I expect we'll be hearing more about these ongoing
successful hunts soon.

Subject: School kid

Darryl and all, thanks for the congrats.
I was almost in tears when we spoke to the school, and those
hundreds of kids all were chearing and having so much fun.
When the little boy found the meteorite, you saw for yourself that
the other kids were carrying him like some sort of football hero. It
was priceless, and moving, and
I think we really touched them. As I said, the science teacher was
also overwhealmed with emotion that this was happening to his
students.
What happened there was a piece of history, and this meteorite fall
is so different from Ash Creek, where the locals were very
uninviting, Wisconsin is almost 100 % success rate for permission to
hunt, and eveyone is so interested in the meteorite.
That kid and the fact that he found a meteorite minutes after our
talk is such a great story.
CNN is focusing on that, and the story will be out tomorrow or
Monday I was told today.

The owners of the historic Wold Cottage are now proudly able to

2010-04-22 Thread Chladnis Heirs
Dear Abdelfattah,

this is a really sad and the more shocking news,
as we met Mbarek just a few weeks ago and found him in his always jocund and
friendly mood.

We and we think we can speak also for all the countless collectors,
researchers and curators keeping knowingly or unknowingly specimens in their
collections from the stones, which had passed through his hands,
are grateful to his contribution and will honour his memory.

Today the meteorite family has lost a good man.

Saddened we express our condolences to Mbarek's family and his friends.

Dear list members,

I want to inform you that Mbarek Ait El Caid was dead today I had this bad
news from a friend of Rissani.

Mbarek is a serious and honest confidant man who helped the science in field

collectors and dealers coming  from this person.

and I think many people know Mbarek or heard about him and specialy those
who have visited Morocco.

Mbarek is a person well experienced in meteorites. the world of meteorites
has really lost a wise man and the active tillering person.

I do not know what to say about this person. He has a good and exellent
performance. I worked with him for years.

After Terry Boudreaux and I gave a two hour presentation to more
than 500 kids at the Grant-Iowa County school yesterday, we asked
all the kids who was going to hunt for meteorites during recess. Of
course all the children screamed and raised their hands. Minutes
later, while news crews were shooting footage and doing interviews
with us in the schoolyard, a 6 year old boy screamed he found a
meteorite, which was a beautiful and perfect 100% crusted ~40 gram
 stone.

The school went crazy and another stone was found by a young girl a
little while later. It was amazing to speak to the school, and
every child there saw or heard the meteorite go overhead. I think
that all these kids will be searching for meteorites now. The 8th-
grade science teacher at the school told me he dropped his teaching
plans for the next week and has moved his classes into researching
meteorites on the net and doing reports on meteorites and meteorite
falls. He was so happy at all of this and said that the children are
so excited to come to class since the fall last week and did not
want to talk about anything but the meteorite anyway so he went with
it. I was mobbed by kids wanting to talk about my trips to Africa
and how to find meteorites, so I think a few old falls may turn up
on the farms from all this.

To bridge the gap between meteorite dealers and scientific
institutions, I presented one of the stones I found as a gift to the
Field Museum for the meteorite collection.

The Mifflin meteorite was great, but pressing projects have forced
me to leave the strewnfield and go home today, leaving the country
again tomorrow. Thanks most to Terry for getting this fall so much
media attention, and to Michael Johnson for tirelessly precessing
raw photos direct from the field and posting them, the list can now
see meteorites moments after they are found.

The article seems to be recounting the adventures of several dutch

So it wasn't just amateurs, these were invited individuals and they
did not get to keep any pieces they collected.

she's given a couple of presentations about that adventure as well.)

[meteorite-list] Wold Cottage 'meteorite homecoming'

2010-04-22 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello Martin G., Linton, and List,

 What a great story, Martin.

A truly great story!

Kudos to Dave for his extraordinary generosity
and to you for your noble effort.

I agree 100% !

I was not familiar with Wold Cottage, but is on my acquisition list now.

Wold Cottage is hard to get :-(

Best wishes from the proud owner of a tiny 0.068-gram fragment. It is a very
special
piece because it was a gift from Jake Delgaudio back in December 2000. The list
gurus
will surely remember Jake!

Linton and List, here is some background info on Wold Cottage from U.B. Marvin:

MARVIN U.B. (1996) Chladni and the origins of modern meteorite research
(MAPS 31-5, 1996, 545-588):

Wold Cottage, England, December 1795, pp. 560-561:

At 3:30 on Sunday afternoon 1795 December 13, a 56 pound stone fell at Wold
Cottage
in Yorkshire. The sky was overcast. Suddenly, several persons in the area were
startled
by something whizzing through the air followed by a series of explosions. A
laborer looked
up just in time to see a black stone emerge from the clouds and plunge into the
soil about 30
feet from where he stood. The ground shook and mud and sod flew up all around
him. Rushing
to the spot he found a large stone, warm and smoking and smelling of sulfur. It
had penetrated
twelve inches of soil and six inches of the underlying limestone.

When Captain Edward Topham (1751-1820), the landowner and a flamboyant
pamphleteer,
editor, and playwright, returned from a visit to London, he obtained sworn
statements from
the three eyewitnesses and interviewed numerous persons who had heard sounds
and felt
concussions. Topham arranged to exhibit the stone in Piccadilly, London, across
the street
from the much-frequented Gloucester Coffee House (Pillinger and Pillinger,
1996).
He prepared a handbill with an engraving of the stone and a description of the
fall to be given
to those who paid the entrance fee of one shilling.

There, Sir Joseph Banks saw the stone and acquired a sample, possibly from
Captain Topham
himself. In 1797, Topham published the text of his handbill and the engraving
of the stone
(Fig. 12) in Gentlemen's Magazine (Topham, 1797).

Two years later, he erected a brick monument over the site of fall and planted
trees around it.
Today, with the trees long gone, the weathered inscription still tells us that
on this spot, on
December 13, 1795, there fell from the atmosphere an extraordinary stone; 28
inches broad,
30 inches long, and weighing 56 pounds; the column in memory of it was erected
by Edward
Topham, 1799.

It was really a very sad and shocked news about Mbarek`s passing away.
He was honest, friendly and with a good sense of humour. He contributed alot in
the field of meteorites ..Sad that we lost one of the big meteorites dealers in
Morocco ...Mbarek you will never be forgotten ,you are always in our memories..

A good idea ... except, by some estimates, it is just possible the

[meteorite-list] AD: WI Fall Milwaukee Newspapers

2010-04-22 Thread fallingfusion
Good Evening Everyone..

Its hard to believe that it has already been a full week since the excitement
began here in WI. Now if only I could find one of those darn meteorites! (..for
now, please send me an email if you have an extra ; )

I have ten copies of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from yesterday, April 21,
carefully flat-packaged and ready to be sent to those who wish to receive a
copy. A front page feature article, titled Dandelions, cow pies, and
meteorites includes photos and interviews from Rob Wesel, Ruben Garcia, Mike
Bandli, and Jim Schwade. And yes, one of the photos on the cover is a close up
of Rob Wesel's 219g stellar find.

Price is $10 + $6 postage via USPS Priority Mail. (tracking # will be on file,
provided upon request). Sorry, U.S. customers only at this time, please.
Newspapers will ship tomorrow if payment is received tonight.

Personal check, money order, or Paypal accepted. Paypal address will be
provided upon confirmation of your order.

Have a lovely evening, and good luck to those still out in the field.

Kind Regards,

Ryan Pawelski

Hi Dirk,

I have especially enjoyed your blog page the past few days. Don't let it
worry you. The scum isn't worth the energy nor any effort to try to fix
their twisted personality or their lack of a real personality. Hopefully
it's not anyone on the list, but if it is, I'm sure it's one of the very,
very few angry complaining members that isn't happy with their life and I'm
sure it shows on his face and in his many aggravated posts that appear on
this list.

All the best to you and yes, his karma will certainly get back at him
because What comes around goes around what you put out, you get back and
as you soweth, so shall you reapeth just pick any of these according to
preference and it will bite them in the ass.

Take care,

Brian

2010-04-22 Thread Charles Viau
What a day for the meteorite community. This event puts the icing on the
cake for what has already been a monumental year for public exposure to
meteorite science.

Wow, and not to mention the value of that little piece of meteorite for
this little boy has got to be quadruple+ market , given the circumstances
and company present where it was found.

Incredible story.

After a presentation at a elementary school located within the Livingston
strewnfield, the kids headed outside for recess.

One boy actually found a meteorite while the TV cameras were still there.
