[meteorite-list] unclassified howardite
Hello, in one of the biggest Mineral Show here in Italy in 2005 I bought a nice individual howardite with a nice fresh crust. This sample was on a table of a moroccan dealer: Ismaily Sidi Mohamed ( I think many of you know him!!!) At the time of the purchase this howardite (and all his sisters in a plastic bag) was unclassified. I think this material was on the market in big quantity, so I think that someone bought some pieces and did the analisys. Could someone from the pictures tell me a possible NWA number or a number of something that could be paired?? Hi All! As you know I'm Italian so I think I have the right to tell you my 2cents! 1) Naples and the rubbish (OT): Maybe most of you don't know nothing about the rubbish situations in Naples and the near cities. This is the situation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rud-B1IDo-Qfeature=related http://images.google.it/images?gbv=2svnum=10hl=itclient=firefox-arls=org.mozilla%3Ait%3Aofficialq=napoli+immondiziabtnG=Cerca+immagini About 130.000ton of the rubbish on the streets!!! The fault is the Mafia, corrupt politicians and a lot of other people interested in the rubbish businnes. It's very humiliating that this is the image that the other countries has about Italy and about Italian people, so I write this e-mail. 2) Italian situation (OT): As you know Italy is a long and thin country, long about 1000km from north to south. You have to know that there are HUGE and HUGE difference beetween the northern regions and the southern regions. Many people who live in the northern Italy think that the south Italy looks like Third World, like the poorest and worst African Country. Who live in south Italy look at the northern like a paradise on earth! A lot of people leave the cities in south for search a better life and work in north. I'm so angry when someone from the other country think that the Mafia is present in Italy!!! Mafia is only in the south and biggest problem of my country comes also from the southern regions! Billions of Euro every year leave the northern regions for the south Italy, for try to resolve the dramatic situation, but all this money goes in the pocket of the Mafia :( When the political class will change I hope a lot of problems will disappear! So please when you insult Italy and the Italian People for Mafia and organized crime, remember that in Italy there are 2 different Italy!!! A rich and beatiful north and a poor and really problematic south!! 3) POSTAL PROBLEM: I'm so sorry to read that the post from USA to Europe (and specially to Italy) go lost in a lot of cases! In the last 2years I have sent and received a lot of packages, about 100. Only one letter sent to Germany went lost... At now the person how sent something to me have never lost anything, I have had some trouble only with a couple of letters... Actually I'm waiting for 5 meteorites...I hope they are on the way :D !!! I don't know the cause of these lost and for the huge delay, i think the situation has worsened in the last few month. I live in a little city, about 100.000 inhabitants, in august there were about 25ton of post in local postal office, nobody knows what really happened and why! 6 month ago a package took about 15days for the trip from USA, now I know I have to wait 4-6weeks. But for example Greg Hupe has sent me a box on 29.15 and it was arrived on 14.01! Some month ago I send a meteorite to Boston and the trip took just 8days with the normal post, just 0.80€ of shipping cost! The trip of a letter from Germany took 3weeks... I don't think there is corruption of the postal service...I think it's hard to say where is the problem. I hope in the future the problem disappear so we (European and Italian) could buy from the great USA dealer without problem! [meteorite-list] Bassikounou Vs Mali + smell
Hi all, on the week-end I was in Munich for the show, as usually a really nice show with a lot of beauties (minerals, crystals and fossils) and a lot of nice meteorites. Here's the first question: In Ensisheim I have bought a Bassikounou, It's 100% Bassikounou, I'm sure because I have no doubt about the dealer. In Munich I have bought Bassikounou and Mali, the meteorites are in different boxes, but maybe someone have changed the place at the meteorites and put the Bassi in the Mali box etc... etc... BTW now I have 3 different meteorites and no one is similar to the others :)) The Bassi I bought in Ensisheim has a black or brown-black smooth fusion crust without metal spot on the surface, the Bassi I bought in Munich has a rough black fusion crust with a lot of metal spots The Mali has more metal spots on the crust. I know it's really difficult to say something by my descriptions, so I have put some pictures on-line: Bassikounou bought in Ensisheim: http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/Ensisheim Bassi.jpg http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/Ensisheim Bassi1.jpg Bassikounou bought in Munich: http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/Munich Bassi.jpg http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/Munich Bassi1.jpg Mali bought in Munich http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/Munich Mali.jpg http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/Munich Mali1.jpg The second question: The meteorite I bought in Munich have a clearly smell of burned, could you smell yours Bassi and Mali and tell me if you feel something??? As you can see from the pictures the Bassi bought in Ensisheim is fully crusted and I don't feel any odor, it's normal? On the other 2meteorite the odor it's very very difficult to feel something from the crust, the odor is clear only on the broken surfaces! Thank you!!! I've just make an experiment. I attack a magnet to the NWA and after to the few H and L slice that I have in collection. I pull the two slice and the magnet remain on the NWA, so it means that it has more iron, isn't it?? With the SAU001 there is the most interesting behavior. Somethimes the magnet reamain on the SAU and somethimes on the NWA. Could we say the metal content are similar?? So the classification too?? Some remarks: During the last years many mineral dealers found out, that meteorites are an attraction, hence they give it in their assortment in the exhibitors' list, although many of them have perhaps only a handfull of lousy indochinites or a dozen Canyon Diablo micros. On the other hand, there are much more specialists, who aren't listed among the exhibitors. Main reason is, that the table prices are horrendous, something around 3000$ minimum, so that they share stalls with other dealers or take some meters as sublessees. For instance you won't find listed Mike Farmer, Gregor Pacer, Andi Gren, Andreev, Pellerin (- Allan Lang, E.T. et.al. will come too, dunno whether as visitors only) and so on. If you plan to spend only a few hours on the fair, then concentrate on the second and third hall, in all the years before almost no meteorites (or good deals) weren't found in the first one. This year the organisators missed to set plans of each hall online (don't know whether the numeration of the stalls will be the same as last year). A little hint: on the information desks at the front ends of each hall sheets with plans for take away were to be found (please be fair and take only one each, they were gone quickly) as well as a booklet with the exhinbitor's list for free. Both very helpful to make your notes and to avoid superfluent running around. Re: [meteorite-list] rust eh eh :)
so it's best to use some form of 'electric' drying oven I think to use an old electric grill just over a pot with inside the meteorite, all between 4 refractory brick. I will try with 70-80°C for 5h. My mother don't let me use the home oven :-) anhydrous ethanol I think is hard to find pure (96%). The solvent I used contains a lot of different alcohol. oil/grease is best applied while still slightly warm The grease that I use is stable from -30 to 230°C so the temperature isn't a trouble. If the meteorite is warm the pores and the cracks are open so the hot grase can go inside the meteorite and block the water at the best. In a store I found a product that convert the rust and the surface in a phosphate iron compound, but on the box there's write the surface become bluish like the tipical metal used for the reed (cane) of the rifle and the gun. The phosphate is very hard and stable. Can be interesting but I haven't an ugly meteorite for try. The product works on iron and steel but I don't know if it works on the iron minerals of the meteorite. Thanks, I will let you know about the results. I would think 100 degrees is a bit high. If you get them too hot, you may start to alter the metals properties, at high temperatures metal will start to oxidize and eventually you might eventually destroy the widmanstatten structure). Btw, don't use a gas oven, as gas releases lots of water when it burns, so it's best to use some form of 'electric' drying oven. And your right, oil/grease is best applied while still slightly warm so that the water doesn't get chance to re-condense. Btw IMHO, The best solvent to use is anhydrous ethanol (alcohol) since this absorbs water, it helps in drying them out.. [meteorite-list] Something stange
Hi All, some week ago I went to the home of the finder of many famous DaG meteorite, like 489 669 670 671 and many more. In DaG he found this strange volcanic bomb: http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/DSCN4101.JPG http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/DSCN4102.JPG http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/DSCN4103.JPG http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/DSCN4104.JPG http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/DSCN4105.JPG As you can see on one side of this bomb there are some strange greenish crystals. At a first look this material looks like Libic Desert Glass Remember that the DaG is several hundred Km far from the region of the Glass. I think the crystals are too big to be terrestrial Olivine. Can the Desert Glass be a normal terrestrial volcanic glass like Oxidian, not correlate with meteor impact??? Any idea ?? I hope I can show to you this amazing sample at the Munich Mineral Show. [meteorite-list] great meteorite day and my first HOW
Hi all, sunday I and my friend Mauro went to a near town (Verona about 100Km) for a conference in the morning about meteorite, the relator is a great professor, meteorite hunter and a great collector. After we went at home of the bigger Italian Meteorite Hunter, Giorgio Tomelleri, you saw he and his wife in Ensishem, S.Marie and Munich, he found 2 martian DaG meteorite, 3 how and much more:) He has shown to us some cool tektite and I bought my first HOW, an endpiece (with crust) 18.5g DaG 671. You can see some picture of the day on this page: http://web.tiscali.it/francesco.moser/Secondarie/Meteorites/Verona%20Picture s.htm if you want to see some great dag meteorite, a 103g of martian dag 670 and a real Tunguska wood take a look :) Ciao Francesco Moser __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi, I'm Francesco from Northen Italy. I will be in Munich all the three day. If we really meet all together we can make the checkpoint 1 or 2 time in a day, so we can meet the people that will go in Munich only 1 day or only morning (or afternoon). We (Hanno Strufe and me) suggest following: We all will have a checkpoint on friday 29th October at 12:00 hr in the front of Eric Haiderer's table, which is located in hall A4 table number 519. There we will meet all together at once and then we will decide what we do in the evening in Munich.
