Yes, junk, magnifying glasses, acrylic boxes, Omani money (but getting it at
the exact exchange rate in middle America is probably not possible.), nesting
boxes, mounting adhesive, and other stuff along with these rocks. If you don’t
want them, then fine I won’t send you a sample, the rest of my stuff is going
to the local high school along with some 100g Dhofar (محافطة ظفار) samples.

I realize the person writing under the pseudonym “Tony Balogne” is likely not
the persons real name.
Have a great day,

Your "meteorite junk"? That doesn't inspire confidence in what you are selling:)
I merely pointed out that you were offering currency at a much higher rate than
it is worth on the official exchange market.
I was talking to Tony Balogne, not you.

Re: [meteorite-list] New Thread regarding scams

2011-05-12 Thread Rob Holcomb
Personally I don't think a "black-balled" list is a good idea at all, it
puts the finger pointers at risk and makes the association look bad. What
it sounds like is the IMCA needs to get involved and promote members that
are dealers in good standing and if any member is caught selling
fraudulently they will lose their membership. Consumers and collectors can
be educated to only by from members of a reputable association that verifies
members and will admonish them if they don't act with utmost honesty and
integrity.

I certainly wouldn't trust a lawyer that was disbarred or a stock broker
that wasn't a member of the NASD. I'm not a dealer and have a very limited
collection, and will only buy from a legitimate dealer.

Seeing these posts on this forum is distracting from the real discussions
and now they have spread to the FB Meteorite group.

Hi List,

It is no debate that scams should be recognized and exposed, and shared on
this List...yet pending un-intended consequences (liable lawsuits and
false accusations) will weigh heavily upon us all if they are in fact ill
conceived and recklessly tossed about.

Our objective is to maintain integrityand the majority of participants
here have more than a rudimentary knowledge in things meteoritic, and know
already when a sham is under way. This recent suggestion of a
blacked-list of scammers is currently directed at all of us, yet not yet
directed to the un-informed, and therefore really doesn't reach those new
to meteorites...(they are also most likely not members of this List and
our discussions...hence the dillema.)

I suggest that we simply alert the rest of the community when suspect
substitutes or outright fraud appears. Simple as it seems, word of mouth,
or word of List, will alert us. And then we'll investigate it. En route,
keep the culprit at bay.

En route, I don't see an upside to pointing out fraudsters in a
formal-format-published-list, since the potential downside would only
further the fire; also potentially harm an already fragile public
opinion. Remember that most newbie eBayers aren't even aware of this
discussion, nor of the List and this thread.

Yes, this is a big problem if fraudulent eBay listings spawn and infect
collections. What to do, besides writing individual opinions to those
infected?

Some thoughts: Pointing out fraudulent people is much more volitile than
pointing out meteorwongs, and miss-labled true specimens (although, the
Mifflin case may offer a compelling counter to this suggestion) since
meteoritic knowledge speaks volumes on its own.

So, I suggest we follow a true path to a solution to an ongoing issue:
spread knowledge of our meteorites, and avoid getting trapped in the
process.

Hi List,

Geoff is absolutely right about NEAF. If you are interested in
optics, astronomy, or meteorites, it is well worth a visit. The
latest in cutting-edge optics is always on display and every year
Televue has it's famous "Blem Sale" where you can buy eyepieces like
Naglers and Panoptics at a substantial discount. Plus, Alan Traino
(one of the key organizers of NEAF) is a great guy and he makes sure
that NEAF always has interesting vendors and speakers. If you are in
the area, don't miss it.

(and if you go, join the IDA and help keep our skies dark!)

Best regards,

Vendors demonstrate the latest in telescope technology and there are

We'll have an impressive display of meteorites and collectibles on

Steve and I warmly invite any List members in the tri-state area to

with plenty of free parking.

There is a dry and to the point Wikipedia article about Mr. Broad,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Broad. He has covered many technical

wasn't among his finest, and it certainly isn't be his worst.

I'd really like to hear a response from him on the list, but that's probably

While I agree with some of what you've written, the aforementioned is
factually inaccurate. What you're referring to has nothing in and of
itself to do with libel. Zilch.

For those who are interested, The New York Times Manual of Style will

While the writer of the piece obviously did a hack job, it should be noted
he won the Pulitzer Prize, twice, and is considered by many to a dean of

If this reporter knows nothing about meteorites and was a blank slat

then somebody had to put these thoughts into his head. It looks to me
that Dr.

Everybody else quoted in this article has stepped up to the plate, took
responsibility for what was said and explained what they meant to say. I
applaud this action and believe most mentioned in this article were
completely

caught off guard.

I do not cherish the thought of somebody else speaking on my behalf
publicly,
especially when they were not elected to do so. What is printed or
plastered on
TV affects all of us. Remember this when an interview with the media
seems to
be getting out of hand. You can always stop the interview and move on.
Most
media outlets thrive on negative entertainment and it works. One just has
to
look at the negative political campaigns to see this. If it did not
work, then
politicians would not use this tactic. It takes ten positive articles to
offset

one negative one.

This ratings over responsibility attitude can be devastating. Just ask
any

former treasure hunter.

Best Regards,

Adam

[meteorite-list] Response to fraudulent Ebay listing using Blaine's name

2011-03-30 Thread Rob Holcomb
I think this is where all the meteorite friends could come together and
inundate the eBay patrol people with issues. They will bow to pressure and
then go outside and play volleyball or soccer, I see them almost daily when
I'm driving to work. :-) And yes they are real people. (Though I think the
"policy deciders" are not human.)

Rob H

PS: I still have about 3 kg of my Oman meteorites if anyone wants them,
they are boxed up and ready to go. Might be nice for a dealer and they are
all 3 grams or more (no little bits).

Blaine - no good deed goes unpunished, even in the meteorite world.

Maybe you should limit your analysis service to people you know or
people who are members of the meteorite community in good standing.

Hi everybody,

I did indeed do analysis work on three different pieces of the same stuff

simply written on the back of my card. HOWEVER, these jerks ADDED the Ni

I told them several times point blank that they DO NOT HAVE A METEORITE.
What they had was a quite titanium rich magnetite. I also told them (as a

I guess this is a serious blow to my model of offering analysis of

I want to ask people out there to keep an eye out for these jokers

the

2011-03-25 Thread Rob Holcomb
From friends near Torreón I have a lead on a recent fall that hasn't been
reported here yet. I'm hoping to get a guide in the desert to help find
something and have a good time too. I'm willing to meet anyone who also
heard of a fall there and are willing to risk the Mexican desert.

I plan to enter Mexico from Tucson through Nogales and make my way through
Chihuahua and then on to Torreón, I have a chemistry project in Torreón and
need to be there anyway so will do some Rocks from Space hounding on the

I'm sure if there has been anything found that the guys are keeping quiet

The area is probably more remote than Mifflin, Wisconsin and far less

Also, I certainly wouldn't depend on the news to get my "news" of a

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: RISKS OF NUCLEAR POWER

2011-03-16 Thread Rob Holcomb
This reminds me of the irrational fears people have over the "body scan"
when going through airport security. The amount of harmful non-ionizing
radiation from the scanner is significantly less than the radiation from
their upcoming flight. According to the National Council on Radiation
Protection and Measurement (NCRP), the exposure from the 40mm wavelength
scanners is approximately equal to 2 minutes of high altitude flight.

Subject: [meteorite-list] OT: RISKS OF NUCLEAR POWER

List,

We are invariably abnormally impressed by the
sudden occurrence of a rare, high-risk event.
We do not appraise them in a strictly rational
manner when this happens.

The current application of fear caused by a very
rare event, as we see in Japan, is weighted heavily.
For those interested in the actual data, the human cost, in lives, of the
various means of electric power production are listed below.
Deaths are for the period 1970 through 1992, the only period for which
data could be collected for all the means of production.
All deaths are "immediate" deaths, and the figures are on a worldwide
basis, which includes countries

with less stringent industrial safety requirements
than the U.S. This is the picture for the Planet.

Hydroelectric production accounted for roughly 4000 deaths, of members of
the public, or 883 deaths per terawatt-year. The vast majority of those
deaths were

from the failure of dams and impoundments.

Coal power production produced about 6400 deaths, all of workers, for a
death rate of 342 deaths per terawatt-year. (Deaths from the mining of
coal are

included in proportion to the use of coal in direct
power production.)

Natural Gas power production resulted in some 1200 deaths, of both
industry workers and the general public, for 85 deaths per terawatt-year.

Nuclear Power resulted in 31 deaths, all of workers, for a total of 8
deaths per terawatt-year, or 1%

of the deaths from "safe" environmentally friendly hydroelectric power.

The "other fuel," petroleum, is rarely used for power production but
largely for transportation. How deadly,

in these terms, is our transportation power use in
cars and trucks as compared to the cost in life of power production?
The U.S. consumed 0.138 teragallons of gasoline
on 2009 (at 4.175 watt-years per gallon), with a
total energy content of a "mere" 0.576 terawatt-years.
Highway deaths in 2009 were 33,963, which yields 58,943 deaths per
terawatt-year of power consumed.

Clearly, the use of this power source for transport
is many orders of magnitude more dangerous than the production of
electrical power, however it is accomplished. Our reaction to this
horrendous

risk is to complain about how much it costs us to
fill'er up.

Humans are not rational animals.

The reduction in overall life expectancy in the U.S. due to nuclear power
production is one-third of the reduction in life expectancy caused by
eating 8 ounces. of charcoal-broiled steak per week.

Make mine medium-rare, please.

Dear Count,

Thanks for the information on the situation in Japan. I'm under the
weather today and at home under the covers with a rotten cold that I can
barely see straight or type and the light hurts my eyes.

I've always thought of you as an intelligent man and still do, but when
you mentioned in your post " I was shocked at Sheppard Smith's opener
yesterday on Fox." I thought why is he watching that station. I still
believe you're intelligent, but it took me a minute to figure out, who the
heck Sheppard Smith was, and then it clicked he was on that station with
the angry people that are always yelling, since I watch CNBC or Bloomberg
News or CNN or PBS or MSNBC my local stations.

There is such mindless drivel on Faux noise. I'm sure you just caught the
story while flipping channels to get the latest. I've had friends and a
relative that worked for Faux and I know that each morning they are given
"Talk Points" and told to try to stay on point to try and grind down the
viewers into believing every bit of yellow journalism they can spew out.
It's their mission to make every viewer and especially every white person
hate Obama and want him impeached, just like they did with Clinton and to
push their right-wing republican viewpoint on their viewers. There's a
reason that most intelligent people call it the "Unfair and Unbalanced
network" and also call it "Faux Noise Channel" and "FUX noise" it's a
worthless cesspool of right-wing conservative propaganda written to rot
the minds of those that are transfixed by the smell of imbeciles like bill
O'Really, sean hannity and glen becKKK. There's a reason they call
themselves "The Tea Party," because it sounds nicer than RACIST,
HOMOPHOBIC, LOW WAGE REPUBLICANS!

I understand you were making a comment towards that Sheppard character,
and the crap he was spewing out to scare the viewers into running towards
their bunkers that glen becKKK has told them to build. Here's hoping you
find a station that has real News, not one that they give talking points
on every morning and are asked to follow and preach the gospel of
ignorance.

Don't everyone get your feathers ruffled just because I don't like that
station or their beliefs. It's a free country and I'm entitled to my free
speech. I'm just making a point and thanking the Count for his update.

Thanks again for the update and I always appreciate and look forward to
your posts. Now I'll have to watch a little TV and hope for happier news..

All my best!

90% of the meteorite list is interested in the Oman meteorite saga that
Robert Ward and Michael Farmer went through from our arrest in early
January until our release ordered on March 7th 2011.

This is my story, Robert can tell his, as it is a little different as we
were separated, interrogated, and housed apart for more than half of the
event.

On December 31st we headed for Oman, my 20th meteorite hunting expedition
there. I have studied the law there since the arrest of the Russian and
American hunters back in 2005. There is no law against meteorite hunting
in Oman, those who asked why we keep doing it, that is why. It is legal.
After months of meeting with lawyers, looking at Oman law, I think we know
what we are talking about.

We had a very successful trip, I found 35 meteorites, 3 pieces of the
Dhofar 1180 Lunar, more than 100 grams, and some other nice things. On the
last day we headed out of the desert and towards Dubai. At 1 PM on 13
January we arrived at a police roadblock in Adam, nothing out of the norm,
until they rushed my car with M16's and they had heavy belt-fed guns on
their trucks. They forced us out of our cars and ripped them apart of
course, finding the meteorites immediately. We were taken to the Adam
police station and interrogated for 10 hours. The Wali (governor) of the
area arrived and was very upset at our confinement, he kept apologizing to
us and saying he did not understand why we were being arrested and kept
calling Muscat to try and get us released, he was angry at tourists being
detained in his district. He then informed that orders from much higher in
the government came in that we were to be taken to Muscat and it was out
of his hands. The
roadblock was for us, they had intel that we were coming. I have intel on
who did it..

We were driven to Muscat in shackles, arriving at midnight, taken to an
interrogation center in Qurum. Stripped, put into separate rooms, and
never saw each other again for the next 25 days except when the embassy
came, our lawyers came, or we were taken to the hospital a couple of
times.
Qurum Criminal Investigation Division is little more than a torture
chamber, we heard many times people being beaten, and dragged around.
I was interrogated in a conference room after more than 72 hours without
sleep. We were kept in small rooms, 9 x 9 x 12 ft, with small pad on the
floor and two blankets, horribly filthy, crawling with roaches, and things
on the floors and walls which I decline to try to describe. There were 4
rooms, Robert and I in two, and other people in the others, we could hear
them crying or screaming sometimes.
I tried to speak to Robert a couple of times just to see if he was there,
and he would yell he was, then the police would come and threaten me not
to speak again, this went on for 25 days and nights, 24 hours a day in
that room, cold, a small light on 24/7 you never knew the time of day
except when food would come.
It was a nightmare that never seemed to end. I was close to losing it,
never did, but my military training kicked in and helped with that.

It was more than 48 hours since our arrest that I was interrogated, forced
to sign a statement of guilt, then driven to a prosecutor's office at
midnight on the 15th of Jan. No phone calls in that time, no chance to see
lawyer or embassy despite endless pleas. I was charged with various crimes
again with no chance to see lawyer beforehand. I begged the prosecutor for
a call and he refused, then thankfully after he sent me out into a waiting
room, another person handed me a cell phone quietly so I called my wife
and in 20 seconds told her I was in jail in Muscat, and to call for help
to the embassy,.
It took a week for the embassy to find us. Oman violated many laws, they
are required to provide lawyer before charges are filed, and contact
embassy within 24 hours, neither done.

After that, the endless days passed in hell, the toilet a hole in the
ground and I will leave the rest to your imagination.
We went to trial on 6 Feb, a 15 minute joke in Arabic with one question
asked by the judge, who then sentenced us to 6 months in prison and a $250
fine for illegal mining operations.

We were sent the next day to the Sumail central prison.

Once we arrived at the prison, Robert and I were placed together in a
room, for the first time we could talk at will, see the sky and see other

Hey List,

I'm looking to sell a few items and thought I would offer a limited number
of items up on Ebay via my Steve Arnold famous reverse auction format.

I have some items that I have listed on Ebay at a fixed price, And
starting tonight, I will be periodically dropping the prices by varying
degrees over the next few days at random times and possibly at random
amounts.

At any given time (probably when I sell enough, or when the prices on the
unsold items gets too obscenely low, I reserve the right to end the
reverse auction and let the prices revert to their starting prices.

Check out the items I have for sale including those on sale now here:

Thanks,

I agree about signing ID cards. I always sign the back of the card, with
the weight of the fragment and also I print my name and put my IMCA

weight works well. But I wish I could find heavyer paper any LISTERS know

[meteorite-list] Meteorite slicing, polishing and imaging

2011-03-03 Thread Rob Holcomb
I'm thinking about slicing up my 4 kg of unclassified ordinary Chondrite
meteorites (since I haven't been able to sell them) and had a few questions.

Do those of you that have saws recommended a specific blade? width? type?
Do you "etch" the surface the same was you would with typical metallurgical
samples?
And, what would be the highest polish you'd use? I have access to automatic
polishers and can use slurry materials down to about 50nm.
Would images be acquired using polarized light? I don't see much crystalline
material in my slices so far and wonder if there is a benefit.
Can you suggest a surface protectant that can be used on the slices? I'm
thinking about using a clear acrylic or silicone material to embed the
slices.

Anyway, my plan is to supply these slices to a local silversmith to fashion
into some great jewelry.

Re: [meteorite-list] Attention Meteorite Collectors who use Facebook -viral spam app warning

2011-02-05 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hi MikeG,
I would like to add that blocking an app does not remove it from your
profile nor does it stop the app from harvesting you and your friends
personal information, it simply blocks it from posting on your wall. And if
it's posted and you click block then it's already done it's damage.

You should also check the Application security area regularly and remove all
apps that you don't use or recognize, go to Account >> Privacy Settings >>
Apps and Websites >> Apps you use. Facebook doesn't make it easy to check
this, intentionally, but it is a good idea to purge the list of apps
periodically. My volume of junk messages and emails goes way down after
purging.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Attention Meteorite Collectors who use
Facebook -viral spam app warning

Hi Folks,

This is a heads-up for Facebook users. There are some new viral-spam
applications going around. These are variations on a previous similar
scam. The app will claim to show you who visits your profile, like a
stat-tracker does on a personal website. However, visitor data is
held in private by FB and nobody or no app can show you this data.
It's a complete scam. These apps have names like "See Who Stalks You".

If you give the app permission to access your profile, the app will
then spam all of your FB friends by posting a link to this garbage app
on your wall, thus encouraging others to fall for it.

I am posting this to Met-List because I noticed that 3 members of this
List have already been tricked by this app.

If you are a victim of these apps, simply block them permanently by
clicking on the "Block this Application" link on the app's main page.

In the future, keep this in mind - scammers use these apps to gain
access to your profile information, possibly to steal personal
information that can be used to hack into your email account or PayPal
account. Often, a security question for your email or PP acount is
the name of your pet, mother's maiden name, etc. Such information can
be found on some people's FB profiles. That makes it easy for a
scammer to use the "Lost Password" trick on your accounts. They will
answer the security question (thanks to the info they gained from your
FB wall) and then change your password - locking you out of your
account and then they will drain your PP account. So just block these
apps immediately as soon as someone invites you.

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Apollo Moon rock sample on eBay?

2011-02-03 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hi all!
I studied geology (back when plate-tectonics was still an interesting
theory ) and there was absolutely zero mention of meteorites or even lunar
materials. But now that I've gotten meteorites in the blood I find that my
old professors and colleagues find these very interesting . I currently work
in an academic metallurgy lab and there are several faculty that are totally
enthralled in meteorites (even though their main research interest might be
stainless steels or brasses.).

So I agree that most geologists wouldn't know a moon rock.

Hi List,

No offense to geologists, but many geologists are not experienced with
meteorites. Some are, some are not. I have a friend who is a
geologist who worked at the Yucca Mountain complex. His knowledge is
very extensive, yet I know more about meteorites than he does. We
discussed this, and he told me that not all geologists extend their
learning into the realm of meteorites. While all geologists know what
a meteorite is, many cannot identify one or speak authoritatively on
them. So, asking a geologist is better than asking a plumber, but
it's not a sure thing when it comes to meteorites. It all depends on
the individual geologist and what areas of expertise he/she has.

Given the fact that the majority of geologists have never seen an
Apollo sample first-hand, I wouldn't expect one to positively identify
such a specimen from just looking at it. So, this seller's
testimonial carries no weight.

Does the item have any bids on it yet?

Best regards,

MikeG

He explains that he bought these lunar samples "from a dealer" about 3

allow that each is valued at "around £2000" (about $3300) each.
A problem arose when he planned to display his samples to the public.

Mr. Sheffield's story of how the samples came into his possession is

Because no one was sure the lunar samples would not contain some

Melanie, You're talking about Google Adwords. It's the advertising program
that shows vendor ads (sponsored ads) in the right had column when you do
a Google search. It's based on keywords, and/or keyword phrases, and what
any vendor "bids" on those keywords. Some dealers may or may not be
running their ads during the show, or may have cut back on their daily
budget. MikeG is right, it could be economic. I think it's a
combination... Vendors bid on keywords and "Pays Per Click" every time a
user clicks the ad. It's rightly called PPC advertising, and how Google
makes BILLIONS!

Type in "How to make money online" in Google and you'll be bombarded with
Adwords ads in the right hand column of most any browser. However type the
single keyword "chondrite" and it shows nothing, or only 1 or 2 ads at
random. This is because not many people/vendors are bidding on that
keyword. Type in "Meteorites for Sale" and a few more results show up.

The reason my Meteorites USA does not show any more in the "Sponsored Ads"
column, is because I turned off my Adwords ads. ;) It's not cheap, and it
was only pulling 25-100 visits per day. I get 5-10 times that traffic
through organic search each day, so it's pointless for me to run my ads
constantly unless I have a special promotion.

Also, Tucson Show is going on right now. Meteorite dealers may have turned
off their ads while they are at the show.

Hope this helps...

Regards,
Eric

The features that are located at and near 34° 0'51.00"
N 105° 8'41.46" W lie within the S1/2 of the SE1/4, of
Section 27 and the N1/2 of the NE 1/2 of Section 34 of
T. 3S., R. 17E. within Lincoln County, New Mexico.
According to Scholle, P. A. (2003), this area is underlain
by the San Andres Formation, which is described as
“Limestone and dolomite with minor shale.”

Judging from what can be seen in the images, the
depressions in this area are natural features. Their
morphology exhibits all the characteristics of typical
sinkholes developed in the local limestone and
dolomite bedrock. Unfortunately, I cannot at this
time find anything specific about the geology of
this part of Lincoln County, New Mexico.

If a person wants to look for features to investigate
as possible impact craters, they can check out the
potential impact crater that Skotnicki (2009)
reported finding within the Lincoln 7.5 quadrangle,
Lincoln County, New Mexico.

Hi Ed,
If you would prefer to not use oil or other materials on your meteorites
another way to prevent rust is to store in a dry container. In BC you
probably have high humidity like in the San Francisco area and I find
storage with desiccant and a vapor proof container to be sufficient for most
meteorites.

[meteorite-list] AD: Meteorite storage boxes & Humidity control

2010-12-03 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hello Meteorite Collectors,
Finally got the slice boxes up on my website, slice storage boxes are
available as 40mm round boxes and 30x50mm rectangular boxes with PDMS liner
to hold your small piece securely! These are great storage solutions for
small fragments, chips and slices (up to 1.5mm thick) because you'll be able
to see all sides without getting it out of the storage box. They are quite
affordable and offer a simple storage solution for small pieces. Label
options include a larger case to hold all similar samples, a simple numeral
and key label system or small labels embedded in the case with the meteorite
sample.

Every order over $100 ships free to US addresses and $8.00 to the rest of
the world! Shipping options to Europe have been updated!

Thank you to everyone that has been taking advantage of my offerings and I
hope that you will consider me for your next purchase of meteorite and
fossil storage boxes. If there is any sizes you want that are not offered,
please contact me for off the shelf sizes up to bowling balls. :-)

Have a great weekend!

[meteorite-list] AD: Meteorite Preservation and storage boxes

2010-11-21 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hello Meteorite Collectors,
Preservation of the fusion crust or slice surfaces requires storage at less
than 30% humidity. All box orders from my website will receive silica gel
desiccant sachets and 30-50% humidity indicator cards (small boxes require
purchase of larger storage box to use desiccant.). Another add-on that isn't
offered elsewhere is a PDMS (poly dimethylsiloxane) lining that prevents
your meteorite from sliding in the storage box when it is moved, a very NICE
feature to prevent the Rock from Space scratching up the acrylic box.

Watch the website this week and 2 new products are introduced, Slice storage
boxes available as 40mm round boxes and 30x50mm rectangular boxes with PDMS

Re: [meteorite-list] US shipping restrictions Was-Question for Europeandealers

2010-11-16 Thread Rob Holcomb
Actually the 1 pound limit was imposed by Japan Post; Japan Post will not
accept packages larger than 1 pound bound for the US. As far as the USPS
there are no other countries imposing a similar ban on Airmail. Though
security will be tighter than it was before the fan mail from Yemen arrived.
(All ground and sea based shipments are unaffected.)

ALSO if you are a registered Japanese commercial business making shipments
to the US (on the international safe shippers list) this ban will not impact
your shipments to the US.

I can send registered (air/ground) mail up to 2000grams and
not matter if this is for Poland, for EU or international
shipment.
But try to go to other post office. Sometimes they have
crazy ideas on posts. They can tell me that my box is wrong
secured by my protective tape or that I write address in not
correct place or whatever they can invent on their coffy
break.

But the best idea will be calling Your post infoline and
ask them if this new regulations are official.

Re: [meteorite-list] thin section storage

2010-11-14 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hi Matt,
Have you looked at membranebox.com? These are great for large slabs but can
become a little expensive if you buy many.

This is not an AD but it is regarding a product aimed at small slices and
chips I'm trying to introduce to my website, I have an animation of a 1x2"
slice box here,

http://4-kats.homeip.net/auctionpics/MBoxes/SliceBox.mp4

This allows you to see all sides of the slice without having to remove it
from the box. I can send you a sample if you want to test it out and give me
some feedback. I AM NOT SELLING these at this time, but am still seeking
feedback. So if you are willing to give me feedback, I'd be glad to send one
of these out for your evaluation. If your slice is thicker than 1mm please
let me know and I can adjust the gap between cap and bottom.

If you are interested in round holders I can provide 40mm round cases that
are about 6mm thick, these cases also have siloxane coatings on the top and
bottom to hold your section securely and allow views of all surface without
removing slice from case. These will only accommodate slices up to 3mm
thick. THESE ARE ALSO NOT FOR SALE! I am only offering to share them with
you to get feedback and maybe offer them in the future. If you have micro
pieces, I can provide smaller round cases that will accommodate 1mm thick
chips and slices that don't exceed 20mm in any dimension.

Please contact me if you are interested in getting samples, I generally mail
tem out once a week and just ask for feedback in return.

Hi Gang,

Look on eBay for microscope slide cases. There are tons of them of
various designs and sizes. Some are the nice "vintage" wooden ones
and some are modern plastic. Prices vary with the selection. I've
seen some large ones that hold hundreds of slides. With such a
container, even the largest collection could fit into a single
container.

Re: [meteorite-list] Confirmed details and graphic -- a jet contrail

2010-11-11 Thread Rob Holcomb

One issue I find hard to understand is the video clearly shows a "slow"
moving object compared to a missile launch. rockets tend to be very fast,
you can visibly see the movement relative to clouds and alien space craft,
where with an aircraft the movement is had to see sometimes when you see it
from hundreds of miles away.

watch around 30 seconds to see the speed of ascent.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnWpJZkvq0o

Robert Ellsworth pointed out it could be a ICBM, since it looks like an
air-breathing flight instead of sub-orbital.

what it was. This isn't an illegal alien slipping across the border,
it's a big contrail leaving craft. If it can leave a contrail, there
should be a record of it. I suppose it could have been a black project,
but even then I'd expect a cover story which was definitive.

I thought it was Sarah Palin's ego taking a spaceship to the moon. :-)

There are rather common sightings here, the actual missile contrail is

[meteorite-list] AD - Meteorite display and storage boxes

2010-11-08 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hello Meteorite Collectors,
Keeping your meteorites below 30% humidity can significantly extend their
original appearance and reduce the corrosion observed after extended
storage. For all order from my website ( http://www.rholcomb.com ) 3 gram
silica gel desiccant sachets and 30-50% humidity indicator cards are added
to every box larger than 4 cubic inches. For the smaller 1.5 (1x2x3/4") & 3
(2x2x3/4") cubic inch boxes I provide 1 gram silica gel sachets for each box
and will provide the humidity indicator card with the tall storage box (it's
2x3" and won't fit in the little cases.).

If anyone desires meteorite encapsulation in transparent silicone (use as a
paperweight or super balls.) this can be offered on a piece by piece basis.
My normal encapsulant is a two-part, clear, room temperature cured silicone
so it won't damage your meteorites, this material offers good strength, UL
and Mil Spec compliance and can be removed entirely at any time in the
future. This is the same lining offered that prevents the sample from
sliding in the storage box when it is moved, a very NICE material.

Have a great evening!

Re: [meteorite-list] Petroglyphs or Yoni questions

2010-11-04 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hi Thomas,
If I remember correctly there was a usage for Yoni as a description of
canyons or rock formations that resemble female genitals and the hoodoo
resembled a male. And in Nevada there were several places with these
formations with names like "virgin valley" (famous for opals) and Queen
Valley...
Check some of the Goddess and Earth Mother sources for references to Yoni,
try "Sacred Places of Goddess" by Karen Tate, isbn: 9781888729115

Count,
I was concerned that I might not be remembering this correctly so I
rechecked the source. It was in a story by Tom Robbins titled "Canyon of
the Vaginas", so I did get it wrong, but in my defense I think he refers
to it as valley of the yonis in the text.

Canyon of the Vaginas may not be the correct name either. Robbins made it
clear that he was aware of the potential for abuse at these sights so he
may have altered the name to help protect the place, or may have simply
created a name that he thought was more humorous.

Re: [meteorite-list] Secret BLM maps ?

2010-11-03 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hi Thomas,
There are petroglyphs all over the desert Southwest and many of the best are
not recorded on public sources. There are many scholarly sources that show
these sights, but that means you need access to the archeological peer
reviewed journals to find them.

I've found that many times I might be looking down at the dry lake for
meteorites and don't find anything, but if I spend 20 minutes going up a
canyon I'll find other treasures. This could be petroglyphs, stone tools, or
even a buffalo jump of two on the eastern side of the Rockies. The caves are
everywhere, even here in the San Francisco Bay Area there are outcrops in
the coastal mountains that have evidence of early life, particularly stone
tools and carvings.

Do they have secret maps? Maybe, but I've never found any, even back when I
did land title data work for the BLM.

Last week I was walking along a dry lake bed and looked up to see the
inevitable white truck parked next to mine. I walked back and had a nice
talk with a BLM officer. He was concerned that we were picking up
artifacts, which we were not. My wife mentioned that we were going to look
for some petroglyphs and asked him about the roads in that area. "No Mam",
he says. "We can't tell you anything about locations. In fact there are
many more petroglyphs and over a hundred caves that are not on your maps
and we can't tell you anything about."

Which makes me think that these locations must be a matter of record
somewhere. Does the BLM have secret maps not available to the public?

Re: [meteorite-list] AD: Worried about meteorite storage? I've got boxes galore!

2010-11-01 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hello Meteorite Friends!
I posted a nice selection of meteorite boxes on my website,
http://www.rholcomb.com, ranging from small 1" x 2" x 0.75" clear acrylic
boxes to 9.5" cubes to hold your large samples. All boxes are made from
clear acrylic/styrene and can be sealed permanently if desired (as a service
since I can't ship the solvent or you can get it done at most local plastics
shops.).

There is also an option to include a silicone elastomeric liner if you
desire to prevent sliding around and scratching the box. The silicone
doesn't outgas acetic acid or methanol, instead it is a platinum catalyzed
product that retains a night tackiness.

Two items that you'll want to include in your box are desiccant packets or
small drying button and a humidity indicator. They are on order and should
be available this week.

I am also working on a slice holder that allows all of the surface of the
slice to be viewed or even displayed with a rear illuminating light. It is a
little different that the Membrane Box. Here's a little movie showing how my
idea works, http://4-kats.homeip.net/auctionpics/MBoxes/slicebox.mp4

Hope you find this interesting and appropriate.

[meteorite-list] (AD) Large selection of Omani Meteorites

2010-10-18 Thread Rob Holcomb
Listing is for a collection of Chondrite Meteorites found in the Dhofar / Al
Wusta region of Oman during 2008.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250713148220

ITEM DETAILS:
This listing is for OVER 200 (4000+ grams) assorted meteorites, all bagged
and tagged! http://4-kats.homeip.net/rfs/pile-anon.jpg Also there is a link
to a complete list of the meteorites at the end of the description! And
pictures of the in-situ rocks can be seen in this document,
http://4-kats.homeip.net/RfS/Meteorite_Contactsheet.pdf, with a nice fusion
crust. These are ordinary Chondrites found embedded in the desert pavement
so there may be some siliceous or carbonaceous caliche material on the rock.
This can often be removed using a soft brush or even compressed air.

The smallest meteorites are ~3.1 grams and the largest is 367 grams. This
collection isn't full of little chips and small fragments, but instead has
great rocks that show fantastic fusion crust and some are complete
fragments.
These meteorites are from the Mystical Arabian Peninsula country of Oman
(Rub al Khali) and are available directly from me or through eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250713148220. Please
email and we can discuss terms and such.

Other Info:
Most meteorites found on trips to Oman are ordinary chondrites and are small
and not suitable for scientific study, but make excellent gifts for space
fans, geological travelers and rock-hounds all around the world. And so I am
letting this one go for a very good price.

Many meteorites that have fallen in desert areas, like The Arabian Desert in
Oman (Close to the Empty Quarter), don't weather quickly, but instead remain
at or near the surface. The wind moves sand and debris to cover the
meteorites one year and then exposes them the next so even when others have
searched an area their tires can disturb the desert pavement enough that new
meteorites are exposed during the next winds storm.

Re: [meteorite-list] International Shipping/Customs Questions

2010-10-04 Thread Rob Holcomb
That is a very interesting discussion and clearly points out the nuances of
the labeling and not the actual package contents. I had a package of
"geologic samples" opened once in US Customs, it was resealed with
approximately 2 rolls of TSA sealing tape because they couldn't figure out
how to close the container once they opened it. "The agent doesn't care
what it is, so long as it fits neatly and legally in the paperwork" is SO
true! Do you know about Vogons and their bureaucratic BS?

Hello Matt, List

Disclaimer: This below discussion is for entertainment purposes only and
the
reader should consult their own legal services for legal advice as
applicable.

All those terms you mention apply to "meteorites" legally and
legitimately.

Meteorites are a subset of rocks so they are "geological samples". If you
mark the contents as "meteorite" you are inviting pilferage and the kind
of
inquiry noted. To my knowledge "meteorite" is not a classification in the
tariff

tables so it can be subjectively placed within a more expensive tariff
class if
the customs agent is having a bad day. I prefer the declaration
"geological
specimen for study" vs "scientific" as it removes any question of it not
being a

"biological sample". So if you declare it a "geological sample for study"
the
customs agent can check the little box on the computer screen and your
packages
is on its way. The agent doesn't care what it is, so long as it fits
neatly and

legally in the paperwork. Don't give them a motive to think outside the
box.

Here are several facts regarding the nuances of shipping into the US and
an
example of how items can have multiple "values" legally. Under US import
rules,

scientific samples are not duty-able, however biological samples can be
embargoed/quarantined for additional information-- invite inspection at a
Level
3 containment facility and be arbitrarily destroyed if everything is not
letter

perfect including CITES compliance certification( Endangered Species
Compliance). Technically, if importing/mailing "rocks" vs "geological
samples"
into the US, you may have also have to certify that they have been
autoclaved in

an oven at 250(?) degrees F for 2 hours(?) to kill nematodes. Once again,
"geological samples for study" invites the least attention both by customs
agents and thieves.

One gray area is the value declaration "No Commercial value(NCV)". My
rule of
thumb is, if the intrinsic value of a specimen is substantially less then
its
study value ( NOTE: I am not addressing "collector's value" for then is
may have

commercial value) then you can still insure it under the theory of
asset/replacement value and still legally and legitimately declare "No
commercial value". Importing small quantities of rocks and or minerals
into the

US is generally not taxed. If shipping a specimen outside the US where
they have

hard line import/VAT fees I believe you are entitled declare NCV but if
you

insure it for extraordinary value then depending on country to country the
insurance value might invoke Duty/Vat charges on the customer.

CAVEATS: If you are importing "ruby facet rough" for the purpose of
making your

own finished stones, then I am not sure you are entitled to use "NCV or

Geological sample for study" in the customs declaration. If however you
are
redistributing/reselling it or reshipping it to others who may be only
buying it

for a "study sample", then you might be able to legally use "NCV/Specimen
for
study". It is a gray area and depends on if you are receiving a small
packet or

a Sea-Land 40ft container. "Country of Origin" can a problem if importing
material which was originally recovered in Mymimar or pearls from
Tahiti(?)
unless they contain within the packing the words " Collected before
embargo"

assuming they were in fact from old collections.

Intrinsic vs Commercial vs Asset valuation.
You go to on expedition to Greenland for 4 weeks and collect fossil
bearing
rocks for distribution to other researchers or for your own amateur study
(
NOTE: "Research" includes "study" but "study" doesn't always imply
"research".

The exclusion wording in US law is " specimens for study").

The rocks themselves, in the low quantity you are shipping/importing, are
"intrinsically" equal to "gravel" in value-- limestone is limestone is
limestone--10 cents per lb at your local landscaper. In and of itself. a
specimen, or crate thereof, may not have intrinsic value. Exceptions maybe
precious metal nuggets where intrinsic value could be argued but are
generally
never questioned by customs unless they have extraordinary value like
several
thousand coin of the realm. If they are

nice and hot. In fact, I'm sitting back waiting for 9.41 tonight to
watch the launch of Minotaur IV from Vandenberg AFB.

Re: [meteorite-list] Was: GoogleEarth & GPS in Meteorite Hunting Now:Ethics and Meteorite Find Locations

2010-09-12 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hi All,
I know some people who totally agree with the statement, "There are folks
out there who consider the location of their finds their personal strewn
fields and intentionally desseminate inaccurate coordinates to throw off
competitors and collectors. I suppose they can make a good argument for
doing it."

So I guess the locations should be suspect.

I'm afraid that the accuracy of locations since the introduction of the
GPS system are still suspect. In just a few months of field research on
recent finds in the Western USA, I came across GPS coordinates that were
obviously off by miles. For instance, there's a rare CM1 find whose
Googled MetBul location puts it a vacant lot in a residential
sub-division.

There are folks out there who consider the location of their finds their

On a conceptual this sounds great. One flaw in deployment is the accuracy
of

the gps coordinates that you may have for any given find. There are
coordinates in MetBul that are accurate within 20 miles or sothats' a
lot of dirt. Any coordinates in MetBul prior to the advent of the GPS

To use this tool in the field, you must have one of the

However, the best anyone can explain me is the more gigabytes

so, personally, I see little to be gained by spending the additional $
for more gigs unless you, personally make a LOT of videos and want
all of them on your iPad. Otherwise, any other source can be accessed
by the device, so, why store it IN the device? Perhaps I am wrong
here, if so, would someone on the list please clarify additional

Re: [meteorite-list] Help with a Gebel Kamil meteorite for sale oneBay

2010-08-30 Thread Rob Holcomb
Hi Tom, Sorry to hear about your loss. I sell a lot of stuff on eBay and
have experienced their "protection" before and in cases where they have
offered the buyer or seller protection PayPal has paid the claim directly.
but that is ONLY valid on eBay sales.

If you accept or pay for a non-eBay sale using PayPal, you are totally out
of luck if there are no funds available to do a chargeback. The best case in
that instance is that you used a bank issued credit card to fund the
payment, that way you can dispute the charge with the issuer and they WILL
take action to get your money back from PayPal (because PayPal is a vendor
and not a bank they can easily run charge-backs on them.).

Happy Hunting,

This is getting off topic for meteorites but I thought I would share
that,

as of yet, no one has said they have had any dealings with this seller.

I lost out on a $360 microscope part that was not sent. It was a total

it

is a scam and the account is drawn down before you know the item has not

Hello Barry,

I usually won't even respond to that kind of unqualified "IMCA bashing"
emails, but since you seem to be new to meteorites and the meteorite
community I'd like to say a few words, just for the records & in public:

You actually applied for IMCA membership less than a few weeks ago, but
when

I told you that your recommending members would have to write us a short
recommendation letter you backed out and told me that you weren't aware
that
recommendation letters were required - even though this is clearly stated
on

our "Join" page and repeated in the confirmation email sent out by our
system. I didn't hold this against you, and I still don't. I even helped
you

with the identification of the "lunar meteorite wrong" that kindled your
interest in meteorites about six months ago. You thanked me for that, and
wrote: "I think of the IMCA as an organization representative of honesty
and
responsibility and will some day be happy to join if you will have me."
And

I told you that you would be welcome.

So what made you change your mind that fast? Now you are calling our
Vice-President words (which I won't repeat, and for which you already
apologized, somewhat halfheartedly), and you are calling the IMCA a
"corrupt
organization"... Based on what? The "confidential information" of people
who

weren't accepted as IMCA members in the past, or former members who have
been expelled from our Association for not respecting our simple Code of
Ethics (to which each member agrees to adhere prior to joining)? People
that
might have an interest in instrumentalizing you as a newbie to "pay back"
to

the bad people at the big bad IMCA? Make sure where you get your
"information" from. You seem to be easily impressed, and I recommend you
not

to take everything at face value what you are told.

The IMCA is run by a Board of Directors consisting of 9 elected Board
Members from 5 different countries, and most of us Board members are no
meteorite dealers. And if the minority of Board Members who are dealers
and
could have "conflicting interests" were as "corrupt" as you might think,
how

does it come that they are elected and re-elected by our membership? How
does it come that "conflicting interests" don't play any role when it
comes

to votes and decisions on our Board of Directors? I think I, as the
President of this Association, should be aware of that, right? I can
assure
you that you are totally wrong, not just about Anne Black but also about
our

Association. The IMCA Board of Directors, including Anne Black, have been
involved in helping clearing up the pairing situation of NWA 5400 and its
aleged pairings ever since this subject has been brought to our attention.
Many questions still need to be answered, but that's in the nature of the
subject as it requires oxygen isotope testing and more - something that
takes time; so please be patient in this regard, and don't jump to
premature

conclusions.

Yes Barry, silence might be a plague sometimes, but it's sure better than
to

rant about people you barely know, and about subjects you are not familiar
with. I still won't hold this against you as you are obviously a newbie,
and

easily impressed. Anyway, since you brought this up in public I thought a
public response would be appropriate. And I think another apology to the
entire IMCA would be in order - we are surely no "corrupt organization",
and
I and many other IMCA find it insulting that you are making such
outrageous

and unqualified statements in public.

All the best,
Norbert Classen
President IMCA Inc.

Greg, Michael, List,
Glad to hear that many of you were able to enjoy the show.
I spent three days up in the White Mountains, east of Bishop, CA, near the
Nevada border. The area is home to the Bristlecone Pines - the oldest
living things, at up to 4,000 years old. Being in the rain shadow of the
Sierra Nevada, we didn't see a single cloud the whole time. The sky was
very transparent, and dark enough that we were able to easily see the
zodiacal light beginning around 3:00 or 3:30. We enjoyed plenty of DSO
observing early on, when we weren't just sitting back watching for
meteors. I didn't have a counting device, but I'd estimate we saw about
100 before midnight, and another 200 between midnight and 4:00. They
seemed to be almost equally divided between bright ones with ion trails
and faint ones without. Of the bright ones, almost half of them had
persistent trains, visible over 60-90 degrees across the sky. The shorter
ones probably spanned 10-15 degrees. We had a couple of long "skippers",
an orange "firework" that seemed to explode and then fall, and even a very
bright one that might have qualified as a bolide. A great night, all in
all. One that I'll always remember.

orange tint to it. I'm certainly no expert on meteors but sure looked
to me like this one made it into dark flight. I've seen a daytime
fireball and watched the big one that went over to California a while
back at night but the first one I saw last night was by far more
spectacular to see. Last night, I also watched several that were
multiple pieces of 3 or more traveling side by side. They went pretty
much directly overhead going north to south. For the last few years we
had clouds during the Persieds. Nice to finally get to watch some of
