Re: [meteorite-list] OT- Our position regarding the IMCA
Hi Ron, You damn right , Screw E-bay and the J. O.'offs who created the entity. You are of no importance to them, and not getting e-mails back, what, are you crazy? that's not their problem, man. It's your problem as soon as you BID, regardless of what they tell you about proper complaint channels and crap. As I posted before, do your homework, and if your must have it now impulse is running on high current that should be a sign for you to get off the site and play with the kids, dog, fish, whatever your diversion- Oh yeah ,don't forget the eternal wife or girlfriend too. E-bay needs to get involved with taking out some of these scumbags that they in effect let represent E-bay, especially , what pisses me off the most is the lousy photo's of the item for sale. In my opinion, if you can't take a descent photo of the item for auction or Buy It Now then you should pay someone to do it for you or you can't sell- period ! No Lookie - No Selli. Usually they advertise, e.g., Look at the beautifull fusion crust, and the 20mm robins egg chondrules ,WOW , what a great bargain (The WOW 's are a definite sign of impending tragic loss of cashflow from your person . Stay away from the non- guaranteed, non - certified authentic, and unclassified and not- analyzed by a Meteoritics Lab stuff out there. There's some good guy's on our (I.M.C.A.) list here , and the World Class dealers off- list might give you a good deal too. For instance, Bob Haag has never done me wrong in the 12 yrs. that I've known him. I know him from telephone conversations over the years. Like a lot of us on the East Coast I hope to someday do the Tucson Show and visit at least 5 fair dealers worthy of the name fair, in Tucson. Another I have done deals with is Ron Farrell- New haven, CT.. U.S.A.. He cut me an Imilac slice 3mm thick X 5 in. X 4 in. and it is absolutely immaculate . I've had it now about 11yrs. . He sid it took time and effort to cut a jewel woth the money I dished out for it- it's a 123Gram Grade 1 50/50 gorgeous pale green Olivine and Ni-Fe. He did it like a jeweler would make you a custom piece of jewelry , except it was just another sale. He was building up his customer base. There are some mentally ill dealers who tell you that they know for a fact that it's a meteorite and all, but the impatient greedy bas...rds in fact do not know diddly squat about what they are trying to sell you, and they get ATITTUDE in the e-mails that they send you ( if you're lucky to get an e-mail at all) if the questions get too hard for their SUPER-DEALER EGO'S. If we are going to be paying dues , I'd like to know the ratio of Collectors ( International Meteorite Collectors Association- not dealers)to dealers. Please forgive the Java. As one who was recently 'scammed' by a fraudulent dealer through ebay, I can only laud the efforts of the IMCA to notify its members of possible frauds. Although my ebay win was quite small, I discovered---much to my disappointment---that ebay is quite reluctant to get involved in any form of dispute. So...as has been said...buyer beware. If I had read some of this group's, and IMCA's threads, prior to my sale I would have seen all the warning flags and removed myself from the auction. Unfortunately, I was traveling and missed the threads. However, because of many emails from this list and IMCA members I chose to pay the fraudulent seller via an escrow service so I could have you guys examine the specimen. He never responded to any of my emails, nor to the escrow service. Consequently, I never sent any payment. As a result I have my first negative response which ebay will not consider removing! It's interesting to note, however, that the seller (glassface1) has a 100% negative rating already, but ebay wouldn't respond to my call to take a closer look at him. Oh well...it was an inexpensive learning experience--it only cost me my first negative feedback! Hi tom, Did you state on the forms that it was a meteorite. You know there's a lot of antiquities being smuggled out of Italy and into Italy at the moment and they do open suspicious packages. Hell , there's even a ban on exporting Roman Empire coins , and they people find them every day there, sometimes in caches of a hundred pounds or more -mostly copper an bronze. I heard through some archaelogy fans that theres a United Nations Ban on export of All antiquities out of Italy . If your package paperwork mentioned that it was a meteorite or even mineral of some sort , they (italian Customs) figure that maybe the receiver in Italy might also be exporting antiquities and outlawed minerals , antiquities, and especially meteorites- so they check him/her out. This takes a hell of a lot of time. Could be one possibility. HAVE A GOOD NIGHT Roman Nakonechny (IMCA# 0583) _ Watch high-quality video with fast playback at MSN Video. Well if you haven't blown anything up...I'm lucky. My calculation has an error in it from the other day. In the volume part of the equation I left out the division by 4 when using the diameter for area. If you use the radius(1/2 diameter)...then you don't need the 4. The corrected method is below: *** Then I use a cylinder(round) shaped coffee can for small items, or a straight sided bucket for larger items to determine the volume of the object by the change in height of the water: first without the object and then with the object. As a slow American I use a stick rule in inches to figure this out. so it goes like this: determine weight in OUNCES Determine the change in volume in the water level by measuring the: HEIGHT without object first HEIGHT with the object second The difference in height in inches is then used to calculate the SG along with some conversions factors to get it into grams/centimeter cubed. change or delta Volume = Area of container circle x inches in height(change) delta V =(pie or 3.14...)x diameter(inches) squared)x(height change in inches)/4(Note: this is where I has left out the 4) delta V is a number in inches cubed the conversion formula without all the details is as follows: SG = (object in OUNCES/delta V in inches cubed)x(0.06102/0.03527) = SG in grams/cm cubed (Note: without the 4 your SG answer would have been 4 times smaller) 0.06102 is the conversion of cubic inches to cubic centimeters 0.03527 is the conversion of ounces to grams. For the smart users of metric the metric systemthe answer is determined by the change in volume in cubic centimeters cubed and the weight in grams or: Weight in grams/change in Volume in centimetes cubed (now that seems easier doesn't it) = grams/cm cubed Bottom line is most rocks have SG of 1.5 to 3, heavier rocks full of iron like stony meteorites are in the 3 to 5 range, and steel and it's metal friends like iron meteorites are in the neighborhood of 7 to 8. Silver and Lead in the 10 to 11 range and gold all the way up near 18 to 19. RE: [meteorite-list] Meteorwrong help?
Thanks John, Your Specific Gravity info./formulas will be studied and hopefully applied to my heavy metal alloys, electrolytically separated pure elemental metals, and God knows what else they are. I'm hoping the heaviest one is iridium- it weighs close to 2lb.'s (no metric ){:- ). It's quite the fascinating metal and one of the densest. you can actually see the 2mm electrolysis rod holes and sometimes pieces of rods stuck in them and bent over. The Smelter Bldg. guy we talked to said that train cars would pull up to the Metallurgy Bldg. with automatic weapons drawn and everybody was told to leave temporarily, but this was about 30 yrs. ago. One can only guess at what the metal or metals were that demanded so much security. But, enough about that, lets get back to your problem with walking the hills and fields and ,unfortunately , picking up the poor sandstones and quartzites you run across and then further their anguish by bathing the metamorphics. You know there's mega-support group of rock and mineral and meteorite defilers meeting in Tucson right now John . I think I've tortured the subject enough John. Seriously, have you been to the Tucson Show yet, and what's hot as far as the meteorites go. I dont know if you have a booth or are going to just window shop the place. I'll leave you's alone now. Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 11:13:44 + Roman, Well, let's see, I have spent a lot of time wandering the hills and fields looking at every strange rock I see. Some I try to pick up and look at, turn them over and look at their bottoms and other places. Oh no it's worse than I thought...some I even take home and, I can't take say it, give them a bath. Oh no, I do need help! Can you get me a number of that research group in Nebraska?...maybe they can get me to a support group, preferably in Tucson...next weekend. As for the dumb/slow American talk about using english units...that was for the benefit of the metric users from around the world who would have jumped all over me for the conversion crap we go through all the time. Actually, it probably takes more brains to perform the english methods than the metric. ;) John PS I do have to use that useless math crap to make sure I don't mess up my work. Clients who don't get what they want, or bad engineering that blows things up or doesn't work properly often pisses them off for some reason. Otherwise who needs it, right! Thanks John, Dont sell yourself short- you're not a slow American. If you're a slow American then I'm so slow that I'm on a respirator and waiting for a new heart. I was a spelling champ, math was the most useless bit of crap at the young age of 13+ onward through high school. But that was quite a while back. If you can do those calculations you're either very young or you practice them , or it's part of you're job , or you had to help your kid with physics. Whatever it may be, you're ahead of a lot of people and not slow. But be carefull if you ever start bathing meteorites. Researchers at Corn Stalk, Nebraska University For Human Behavior have found that bathing meteorites (in warm scented water) can be a very sensual experience and can also lead to abuse, if you're so pre-disposed. Then if you're caught , you're labeled a rock molester, and the neighborhood has to get notified of your sad criminal propensity for jumping fences and touching the unprotected rocks. Dont even start bathing meteorites- they'll ruin your life. And you know what they do to rock touchers in prison. ={:-) Hope I did'nt scare you. You can tell it's Friday night, cant you? Hi Tom. I have a hell of a collection of US STEEL processed metal chunks and raw ore (especially the terrestrial gorgeous blood red, sometimes orange/brown and even fluorescent bright yellow Iron Ores , from the 500Ft. down level I was told by a Smelter bldg. worker 20yrs. back-half the stuff I havent figured out yet. They share one common trait- they are all hard -you'll have a hard time scratcing one but they do chip-off fairly easily. Some have a black as night oxide coating. Some have a brown and light brown coating, but they're not mine ore-they're processed rare earth metals/elements -by electrolysis or what have ya.. You know , there's one piece that has the dimensions 2+1/2 x 2+1/2 x1 inches , and you have to struggle picking it up with your index finger and thumb- Yes, I do have three more fully functioning fingers Tom. They sure have their differences as far as hardness ,streak, weight in the hand (specific gravity).I wish someone would show me how you test a sample for its specific gravity. My pieces, that I found, as far away as 2miles from the USX Ore Locomotives Tracks are all different processed metals for specific custom alloying metals ,I think? I used to do some metal-detecting in this humongous old-growth 300yr. old trees Pubic Park as Matteo would say, and I figure some of the pieces had to have gotten that far and sometimes closer too, by kids and adults picking them up and then playing (kids) and losing them .As a treasure hunter you quickly learn to see how movement of underground artifacts or above ground stuff like 100yr. old soda bottles might have gotten where they did. But to answer your question it's probably a processed metal ore. Do a streak test on it . Get a piece of broken or extra porcelain tile or if you happen to find an old toilet lid , crack a nice piece off for youself so you have a scrach pad- to do the streak test for color. You can chip down the larger piece of lid to the size you want. Also Tom, My 30 some odd pieces - not one is magnetic except for the Natural Iron Ores. It is not slag, or at least not like any I have seen and I have seen my fair share! Also, it sure looks natural I do not know what's in OK as far as minerals go so I am at a loss. Date: Fri, 30 Jan 2004 13:35:59 + Roman and others, Specific gravity...we've all seen the picture of weighing a specimen out of water and then in water to come up with specific gravity. You need a scale that can hang the object you are weighing in the water. I don't remember the method details but the answer is usually stated in grams per centimeter cubed. I have used my own method for a while to do the same where I weigh the object on a scale and convert that weight to ounces (dumb English system!) Then I use a cylinder(round) shaped coffee can for small items, or a straight sided bucket for larger items to determine the volume of the object by the change in height of the water: first without the object and then with the object. As a slow American I use a stick rule in inches to figure this out. so it goes like this: determine weight in OUNCES Determine the change in volume in the water level by measuring the: HEIGHT without object first HEIGHT with the object second The difference in height in inches is then used to calculate the SG along with some conversions factors to get it into grams/centimeter cubed. change or delta Volume = Area of container circle x inches in height(change) delta V =(pie or 3.14...)x diameter(inches) squared)x(height change in inches) delta V is a number in inches cubed the conversion formula without all the details is as follows: (object in OUNCES/delta V in inches cubed)x(0.06102/0.03527) = SG in grams/cm 0.06102 is the conversion of cubic inches to cubic centimeters 0.03527 is the conversion of ounces to grams. Have fun and don't get wet. (I don't do this with known meteorites) John Hi Tom. RE: [meteorite-list] a serious meteorite question!
Excellent question Tom, I dont know, but I have a longtime ligering question along the same line as yours. We all agree that planets have metals of different densities throuhghout their mantle and crust. So why has'nt a meteorite been found with its native copper , or brecciated with veins of iron and gold (not THE gold meteorite, please), or my favorite would be a uranium oxide like uraninite meteorite. Uranium was the heaviest of the elements produced at the moment of implosion of the Red Giant Primary Star that produced the supernova which eventually became the Nebula that collapsed into our Second Generation Star - the Sun and its planets and Allende leftovers. I mean look at pallasites, the Fe -Silicate mix that some astrophysicists say should not be possible because of the heat differential between the two. Yet the nickel/iron is there and by some miracle of physics so is the olivine in big beautiful crystals like Imilac and Esquel. Uranium is scattered all over this planet , so if a large planet was trashed in space like Tom said , why no other elemental metals, especially uranium. It's all over this planet, throughout its many layers. Date: Thu, 11 Dec 2003 21:48:39 -0700 Hello List, My daughter and I were discussing iron meteorites, and she came up with a question that I couldn't answer, and I was hoping one of you could. Some people think that there was a large planet between Jupiter and Saturn and it was destroyed by a cataclysmic catastrophe of biblical proportions which resulted in the asteroid belt where most of our meteorites are believed to come from. Does this sound right so far? Iron meteorites are believed to be from the core of a planet such as the one that was destroyed by the cataclysmic catastrophe. Is it thought that some of our iron meteorites come from the asteroid belt? If so, it would seem like different iron falls would match beings they came from the same iron core? Has any two irons from separate falls been matched? It would seem like more than one iron meteoroid would have came from the asteroid belt and end up an iron meteorite. Am I missing something? The Meteorite Crater is best described as a square with rounded corners. This is a result of the fracturing at stress point in the strata, which are essentially sedimentary: limestone and sandstone, which were rolled back as one would open a sardine can. I'll revise and republish if I have the guts. The goal of MADML is to provide a *simple* way to provide pertinent auction data in a standard format that's easily parsed. With MADML, it'll be easy to track fine-grained stats over time: $/g ranges for Howardites $/g ranges for NWA 998 $/g ranges for unclassified NWA Number of bidders on Gibeon slices Number of winners of Eucrites Etc. (Note that $/g will be ranges, not single numbers.) All could be easily graphed over time. N.B. No EBay ID's! Since EBay auction titles must be short and since sellers will likely want to maintain complete control over those titles, MADML goes into the item description, not the title. Approach 1: An HTML table: !-- MADML 1.0 -- table border=1 trtd align=rightName:/tdtdDar al Gani 607/td/tr trtd align=rightMass:/tdtd2.75g/td/tr trtd align=rightCut:/tdtdPartslice/td/tr trtd align=rightClassification:/tdtdEUC/td/tr trtd align=rightShock stage:/tdtd1/td/tr trtd align=rightWeathering:/tdtd1/td/tr /table All bidders could easily see the data. Sellers could wrap whatever HTML they wanted around the table (including *hiding* the entire table in an HTML comment). Approach 2: An HTML comment: !-- MADML v=1.0 name=Dal al Gani 609 classification=EUC shock=1 weathering=1 mass=2.75g cut=partslice -- The data would be invisible to bidders. (You can see raw HTML by using your browser's View Source function (available in my browser in several places: e.g., from the menu you get by right-clicking on a blank spot on a page).) The rationale for this HTML comment approach is to avoid messing with any visual aspects of an item description. Approach 3: A text line: MADML [ name=Dar al Gani mass=2.75g ... ] A simple, consise, inelegant visible presentation. Not pretty. Approach 4: Approach 1 wrapped in an HTML comment The benefit is easy switching from visible to invisible data. Just remove or add the HTML comment syntax: !-- Nothing will show up, but the data is still there. !-- MADML 1.0 -- table border=1 trtd align=rightName:/tdtdDar al Gani 607/td/tr ... trtd align=rightWeathering:/tdtd1/td/tr /table -- Which approach do you prefer? Re: [meteorite-list] Awesome Meteorites at the Field Museum
Hi Bob, Nice photo's, well done. Say, have you any idea as to the classification of Park Forrest. There was a fellow about 2wks. back selling his fragments for $40.00gram. Is that the going price for it? If so, why? Has this meteorite been tested by an accredited meteoritical lab, with results back yet. He never got back to me. I just told him that every other meteorite he had for sale had a description (e.g.) carbonaceous chondrite, hexahedrite, SNC, coarse octahedrite, howardite, diogenite you get the picture, but absolutely no description for Park Forest. I asked him politely, why are you charging that much for an unclassified basically unknown type meteorite. Then I told him - and maybe this peed him off- that I would'nt pay my own mother $40.00gram for a meteorite that was not checked out or classified and certified by a meteoritical lab. I dont want to hear from Mr. Meteorite Chaser/Hunter that he thinks it's a this and it looks like it resembles a that and sure as hell has the feel of a this and that AND SMELLS LIKE AN IT, if I'm going to fork over $40.00gram. Put even more simply, do you or anybody else know the composition/classification of this meteorite- done by a reputable meteoritical lab, and not by personnal, untrained obsevation. My mail piles up and I can't get to it all, maybe I missed the great moment when P.F. was classified/certified? Any answers will be appreciated. Thanks Bob. Good Night. ~~~* Roman N. I get a chance to visit the museum a few times a year. They have some great pieces including some really big Murchisons and Allende. They have this incredibly huge( 178lbs ) oriented Bath Furnace meteorite , with beautiful regmaglypts. As well as a ton of Canyon Diablo. I loaded pictures of the Bath , and Canyon Diablos on my Photo page for anyone to view. Click on this link : http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/spacerox2001 The only thing that was frustrating was that for some reason they didnt have their Park Forest meteorite on display. And no matter who I asked , no one seemed to have a clue to where it was. Bob Evans _ Want to check if your PC is virus-infected? Hello Mike T., You're just the man I want to talk to.A while back I was told by a meteorite dealer that Michael Casper had absconded/took -off? with all his unpaid - for meteorites and that he was also wanted by the Russian Mafia (lent him money, I assume) and other such stories. Is he back in business dealing meteorites again?. If so, do you know his web site, assuming he has one and is still alive?. You mentioned Casper - Farmer debates, are they in the archives and how long ago were they posted, like what day and month, year. Don't bother if you don't remember, I know I'm asking a lot of questions. It's because, the last I had contact with the friendly ghost Casper, was right after I received their $27.00 catalog which was quite impressive, but $27.00 Give Me A Break- I was lucky to get it free because he said I was a new customer. The catalog was full of big-ass meteorites and a 7foot tall penis artifact in the middle of their meteorite separation/tagging room (a two page photo)- at least that's what everybody who I showed that double page of their meteorite room thought the 7ft. Phallic thing was-or was it Gallic? {:-) . Of course, anybody who did'nt get the catalog probably thinks I'm making all this up. Aint so folks. This dealer also said that he was somewhere in Florida lying low hiding from his creditors, customers he ripped off, and the Russkies- they do not appreciate not getting paid and will burn your house down after duck taping you and yours. In the news was a terrible report, reminding me of the plagues of the old testiment. As if the floods are not bad enough, now the snakes are killing scores of people. With almost every inch of ground under water, millions of snakes including King Cobras, are swarming all the dry land, which happens to be where the people are crowding as well, and people are being bitten and dieing all over from snakebites. the rice crops are ruined, and will take months to replant and mature. If any of you want, please make a small donation to the red cross, they help so many people all over the world. I saw 20 or 30 snakes today, most dead, killed on the roads, but some alive, all small, no cobras, but my driver assured me all were very dangerous. I also saw a spider today that was hanging in a web, but was larger than my hand! not a taruntula, but a friggen spider that big, it scared the crap out of me, as I am terribly frightened of spiders. ill have nightmares about it tonight. Guess not, ey. {:-) From: Michael Farmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] another note from India Date: Sat, 11 Oct 2003 22:30:34 -0700 (PDT) Another day has dawned, finally sunny, no rain in sight thank god. Over 5 million people are severely affected by the floods according to todays newspaper. After yesterdays tragedy, i really dont feel like leaving the hotel for any sort of longjourney today, i will go to a Tiger preserve today for some more tourism. I am still waiting on a call for a piece today, but will leave here early tomorrow, regardless of whether it comes or not. There have been some questions posed as to exactly how much meteorite there is. Even here noone has any idea. There was one 5.7 kilogram stone, that I held, then i know of another which landed nearby and was smashed up into many fragments, it should also have been 5 or 6 kilos. Then another piece that hit the hut, the one where my already controversial fragment came from, that stone weighed 5-8 kilos, and was also smashed by the natives. It has dissapered, some fragments to different people, the largest piece taken by a policeman who has not been found yet. they are trying, i have gotten calls every few hours, so they are trying. I offered a nice price for it. There seem to be alreay some rumors coming out through Atul's contacts. I have made no firm offer on anyhting other than a large price should they acquire me a large piece. No 70,000 rupees offered for anything, as I have seen nothing to buy. The stones in the custody of the revenue minister in Kendrapara are of course off limits as the local and federal government are already fighting over them. So I do not know the total weight or even how many stones were found, but to the best figuring it is only 3 known to exist. Unfortunately it was sunset when I had to divert from car to motorcycle the other nice to get to the village where the hut smasher fell, and since it was flooded, and almost dark, I left my camera in the car. So I did not get a photo of the crater and damage to the hut, and it is impossible, to far to go back to that village. According to the people, virtually millions saw the fall, the firball exploded and broke into many pieces, many explosions, boom boom boom boom boom, like that they said, it is clear that the meteorite broek up very high and into many pieces, it was so large I assume that likely hundreds of stones fell. The village where the hut smasher fell, the people described the fire in the sky that made all of the women and children scream in terror, lasted a few seconds, then came the booming sounds, then one or two minutes later, screaming sounds like they had never heard, then the people still outside saw the dirt flying and the stone bounce accross the village square. They said they heard several such sounds, but since it was already dark, they do not know where the others landed, and the village like all others, is very tiny, just one small trail in between the rows of huts. It is on a raised little island, surrounded by swamps and rice paddies. It is clear that many more stones fell nearby, but now sit 3 feet under water in the mud, never to be found. that is the only stone that landed on the raised village. As far as the homes that burned, it has nothing to do with the meteorite as far as i can tell, they were in villages that saw the fireball, and i think they just associated the disaster with the firball. One neat bit of local lore, the Hindus here believe in many gods, one of which is names Indra, the god of lightning, a bad god who likes to kill people by throwing lightning and killing people and cows (apparently hundreds are killed here by lightning, no wonder due to the everyday thunderstorms and everyone working in the rice paddies). they all thought that this was a terrible punishment from Indra, who through burning stones at the people. they also all asked me how to protect themselves from the lightning, of course I have no answer, only get out of the rain when it comes. The people look at me like some kind of strange being, most in

Date: Wed, 08 Oct 2003 10:12:05 -0700 Michael, Why don't I "PRAISE some of the CHEAPEST prices around?" Read my article this month in METEORITE TIMES. If you read that and STILL can't figure out why I don't "PRAISE some of the CHEAPEST prices around?" Let me make it clear right here: When you offer merchandise for a given price, then offer the same material later for less - then, if you don't sell all of it at that price, you offer it later for even less - over and over and over, as you do, Michael, you create several effects that go far beyond your personal reality. For one thing, you give buyers the message they should never buy now, wait, and the price will go down (however, this only badly hurts all dealers, not necessarily the collectors.). However, you ALSO burn ALL your own customers who paid more for this material when you originally offered it. I buy something from you for $3.50/g and 2 weeks later you drop the price to $1.75/g - I feel RIPPED OFF. (perhaps you STILL don't get this, despite doing this to all of us who invested heavily in Wagon Wheel - which you, then proceeded to GIVE AWAY. Those of us in for $3.50 a gram felt really burned and I, for one, told you that strait to your face and I KNOW several others who did as well.) ALSO, when you do this, there is NO STABILITY in the meteorite market. Low prices, I am all for it. My collection has never been "gaining weight" so fast. I can make just as much money dealing low priced material as high priced material. No problem. It is the instability that TOTALLY destabilizes everything It really doesn't matter (on a market level) whether meteorites are "cheap" or "expensive" - of course, as a collector, I prefer them cheap - but as a dealer, I don't care one way or the other. WHAT I DO CARE ABOUT IS STABILITY. Without it, neither collectors OR dealers can conduct business in a sane manor. Your CONSTANT "fire sales" followed by even greater fire sales undermine that stability entirely. No one can reckon the "value" of material, because the prices are running all over the board. But you get your cash in hand NOW and that is all you care about. So, Michael, THAT is why I don't "praise some of the cheapest prices around." Get it? Or, is it STILL too subtle for you? I resent it as a collector and I resent it as a dealer. [meteorite-list] Re: I got a 7 kilograms meteorite from allende Mexico for sale...
Hi Hector, You have a very special meteorite there, as I'm sure you know if your grandpa told you anything. And it's a huge piece of it. Some people might want to buy the whole stone for quite a high price, so dont butcher it up, man. I mean , break it up or slice it until you check with some top dealers who have connections all over the world . This is the right place to start looking and we'll try to help you as much as possible. You've got a lot of money in that special rock and people know what it's worth. Secure it in a trusted bank security box first or if you're out in the sticks (farmlands) you know how to hide something. just be careful, OK?. Call Robert Haag , The Meteorite Man- Tucson, Arizona ,U.S.A.. Just ask Directory Assistance for the number. He's the man to deal/sell with and he's fair, that is if you want to sell a super ancient 7kilo rock from OUTER SPACE. It's 4.5 billion yrs. old. It's what the Sun and Earth were created from. That's the condensed cloud/nebula hardened that you're holding in your hand. It's very rare. Take care of it. You're one lucky guy, man. GOOD LUCK. I'm not saying that I believe in Jovian meteorites, but I know that people can easily misunderstand any information about meteorites. The letter states: During a conversation with her, one of the meteorites was identified as coming from the planet Jupiter. Now, I heard similar statements before, e.g., I told a friend who isn't into meteorites that most of these rocks from space have their origin in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and I also told him about Martian and lunar meteorites. He told this to another friend, but left out a few bits of information. When the other friend called me back, and wanted to have a look at my collection he was very excited to see my rocks from Mars and Jupiter ;-) So, maybe Mrs. Cheung's meteorites are real, in the end. Facts are often getting mixed up, and I guess we can't exclude this possibility. Anyway, have fun, and imagine a gaseous meteorite, or - even better - a block of frozen hydrogen in its solid metal state ;-) Best, Norbert -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Aha! Hey Mikey, I'm from Brasil (true spelling) and all OFF TOPIC'S should be so fascinating. I wish I could've seen the feathery and colorful illegals(joke).Even parrot's are COMIN TO AMERICA like the Neil Diamond Global Hit Song. But it's the warm climate in San Diego, which is similar to parts of South America that has allowed them to survive and will probably propagate . The will pass by your house again . The species has homing capabilities- to known food sources. Let's hope some ignorant rural's don't shoot them out of the sky. In Brasil we would all come out of our school rooms when hundreds flew noisily overhead. It was like a living rainbow- coollest thing to see. Real nice OFF TOPIC. Yesterday (Sept. 8) a very unusual occurrence took place in my yard: A flock of a dozen parrots came to eat my leftover sunflower seeds! When I went out to pick up the paper at about 8 AM I was alerted when a neighbor lady called out to me, Mr. Blood, there are parrots in your sunflowers! And, to my delight and amazement, there were, indeed, parrots feeding off the Russian Giant Sunflowers! I had left most of them to dry in the sun, even though the birds had been eating them. but I had surely never seen parrots doing so. In fact, there were twelve of them an entire flock. And beautiful they were, indeed. Most amazing, they were clearly all the same species. I grabbed my camera and went out to get some photos. You can see most of the photos I captured of these beautiful creatures at: http://community.webshots.com/album/89632975MfUNTL (Particularly nice are photos # P16 P15) I later researched the species. They had beautiful blue heads, orangish top beak and near black bottom beak with a little blue in their underwing and red in the underside of some of their tail feathers. Their legs and feet were flesh colored and when I later examined their photos closely, I could see no bands on any of their legs, indicating they likely escaped bird importers in the Tiajuana area and/or have bread in the wilds of this area. They turned out to be Sharp-tailed Conures (Aratinga acuticaudata) which are native to Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay and Argentina. So, they are clearly an escaped flock that have naturalized in the area. It is very rare to see parrot flocks in San Diego, but one hears of them appearing here there on occasion. Usually, however, such flocks are reported to contain mixed species of parrots, presumably attracted to their own kind having escaped captivity individually. This is the only occurrence I have been aware of where an entire flock was the same species. In any event, I will certainly be planting more sunflowers next year! Howdy John, It sure looks like it might be Nickel Ore. I have a beautiful chunk of nickel ore that my daughter found when we were walking on R.R. tracks by a park. The slow LOCO'S carry some of the most interesting ores and when overloaded we pick up the ones strewn about a slightly shaky bend . I think we have a 1/2 lb. piece of iridium, not sure yet. Try finding some of the ores ,processed or in natural state, I guarantee you you wont . Any dealers , if you sell exotic metals, processed or natural ores, I'd be glad to talk to you- legal stuff, of course. Dear Gabriel, Nice name by the way. As you know, there are meteorites that cannot be adequately explained(composition, chondrule color and shapes, inclusions that make no sense, origins of the particular meteorite, etc.) yet there they are right in front of us. Hubble is taking pictures of objects that are forcing astronomers and physicists around the world to rethink and change their once perfect explanations of phenomenon out there that challenge their beliefs in the perfection of physics and its being the answer to all processes, terrestrial and celestial . Physics does explain a lot, here on Earth , and even here there are mysteries that science in all its branches can't explain, but once you look up at the majesty of the only thing greater than yourself-THE COSMOS - there's no way you can tell me you do not feel the presense of a creator silently whispering , This I Made For You And My Others , not actually vocalizing it you understand. You can't see the wind but you can observe the effect of it , from gentleness to mighty Tornadic fury. I tend to be slightly skeptical too, but every time I hold my meteorites , from 4.6 billion yr. old Allende 156gr. whole 98% fusion crust, to the mystery of Imilac 123 gr. slice- it's as long as your palm and 4in. wide, and it should not have been able to crystalize/form the way it did at all-there's plenty of theories too many to mention, everyone's got one ,you know what I mean. Einstein wanted to understand the mind of God, he did not accomplish it, God gave him a teeny tiny taste but that's all .Maybe now he understands The Great Purpose of life and the mysteris that keep us looking for more teeny tiny tastes. The bible is to full of contradictions to be believed and the official word is that the new testament was created by Piso under orders from Julius Ceasar to placate the slaves of Rome eg: Turn the other cheek. Re: [meteorite-list] Fair Price for Park Forest?
Hey Walter, Do these look like Park Forest to you, first of all. I have'nt seen any close-ups till this set, but for a fresh fall, which we'll assume these are meteorites and they did'nt hit a dog, cow, crashed through a roof and destroy any CPU peripherals(printers, etc.), or the owner-for a supposedly untested L6, one of our list allegedly eyeballed it as an L6 Chondrite - a fair price would be in the neighborhood of $10.00gram. But you have to tell the owner that condition is a factor in pricing it- you know, fusion crust coverage percentage, fractures (pieces missing). I personally would wait and see what the 50lb. heads (scientists) come up with as far as any unusual composition, cause you might regret selling it so fast if it has a unique composition. Unless you know for a fact that they have a definitive analysis on this sucker, already, I would advise the fellow to wait it out and not join in in the selling frenzy. There's some guy on (SELL IT NOW)like Ebay, I personally never heard of it, maybe it's a part of Ebay, is selling his for $200.00gram-that's just greediness if the fall has'nt even been analyzed, even if it is a scientificaly proven ordinary L6, $200.00gr.? you gotta be out of your frieken mind to pay that. Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest orders
Hello Michael, First, let me say nice to meet you, on this thing of ours. I have'nt read all the Email- so I dont know if any conclusive analysis has been made yet by a trained astrochemist or some Meteorite Lab on a genuine sample of Park Forest. I just need to know if you know, or heard, that it's an impact melt breccia. You sound like one happy dude. Must be great to find some meteorites and buy a keeper. Yor enthusiasm is infectious. You been hangin'round HAAG-man or something? SEE YA! ( IMCA #0583) Roman N. From: Michael Farmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] Park Forest orders Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 21:02:14 -0700 Hi again everyone, I am sending this here since I have too many orders to answer individually. I am requesting that all who want pieces of this meteorite, send me payment via paypal for watever $$$ amount you want to buy. I will handle all orders by what you want, and if we decide I cant fill your order, the paypal payment can simply be cancelled and the money credited to yuor paypal acount with no fee. Re: [meteorite-list] Allende Inclusions?
Hey tom. It's probably light green olivine that crystallized with other pre-solar nebular material, silicates in particular- some of which have no color hue. I've seen many different color hues in my Allende slice and the fascinating and sometimes perfect chondrules when observing them under an American Optical 1000x microscope- rotated down to 100x of course. There's a great book with a section on chondrules alone called (Brazilian Meteorites)and you can get it from: Bethany Sciences (Ron Farrell), New Haven ,CT. . He sold me my first meteorite, Allende, a 156gram 95% fusion crust and a 5gr. slice so that I could better see the chondrules. The whole chondrite has a 1/2in. piece cracked off of it from impacting a widows porch roof. Scared her to death when the rest of the stones came in hypersonic and rained down on(Village Of Allende). Last told, she still has a 10kilo Allende with a beautiful, undamaged, black skin buried on her farm 2ft. down in a plastic trash bag. Imagine a slice off of a 10 kilo Allende , and all the calcium/aluminum and other inclusions, like Gold, Silver, Brass balls- sorry, meant chondrules:), lets not go back there, please! An (e.g.) from the book that I'm pretty sure some of us collectors of nebular fragmented accretions (meteorites), is the description of Chondrule Textures: 1-Porphyritic 2-Barred and Rimmed 3-Excentro-Radial and 4-Granular Porphyritic. It took me 3 years before I found out that Chondrules were formed by the spontaneous crystallization of freely-floating highly-supercooled droplets of melt- in my opinion the best description that everybody can visualize- not my description, I forget where I copied it from? The've found chondrules with tiny nickel/iron cores. Then you throw at your friends or family that the Earth is nothing but a MACRO -CHONDRULE and you've lost'em. Hey, I get excited about free-floating spheres, especially when they have names, you know what I mean? Sorry about the lengthy response Tom. It's 3:54AM here and I've been watching way too much War T.V. You can't help but get hooked on it!(GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS) ~~* From The Smoke Trail (IMCA#0583) Roman N. 3-27-2003 From: Tom aka James Knudson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] Allende Inclusions? [meteorite-list] Re: [meteoritecollectorsassociation] The golden meteorite
I once new a guy who said he could make a meteorite-IRON - to be specific, he did'nt know about the (Widmanstten Pattern) test though. So I let him try and then I surprised him with the (WIDMANSTATTEN PATTERN)test with Nitric Acid. This person needs to be penalized for making the list look like the guy who fabricated the Iron, as I mentioned. The word is -SEND IT TO ARIZONA UNIVERSITY'S PROFSSOR SWINDLE(really is his name) and DR. KRING , both highly eduated in meteorite-sujects and they would certainly welcome the opportunity to test what could be a fantastic ONE-OF-A-KIND Specimen - which is highly unlikely. Where did he test this thing? There's no way! Are there any flow lines- you would think gold flow lines would be preserved forever, unless water worn-out. NO #$%#@ing way! Sad is right. ~* From The Smoke Trail , Roman n. I can't believe someone would have the audacity to sell such garbage. It reminds me of micromike and his frass meteorite in a way. I agree that we as a collecting community took a blow with this one, and I tend to agree that action of some sort should be taken, as we honest people shouldn't have to be subjected to a setback like this. And too the guy who's selling the gold meteorite, with all due respect, talk is cheap, and getting overly defensive won't help your cause. Give us NAMES of the researchers who classified it AND SEM/XRD analyses, please. Oh, and gemologists study gemstones and the art of cutting them, not meteorites. I'm not trying to be rude and I really wish gold could fall from the sky, but I'll believe it when I hear that Andrea Patzer, Alan Rubin et al. said likewise.
