Mike, Mark and All,
Actually there are lots of News articles of meteorite fatalities.
The question is "Are they true?"
This news article may help:

When there is no meteoritic evidence on record, I catalogue it as false.

Re: [meteorite-list] Apparent Meteorite Lands In Washington?

2003-07-16 Thread magellon
Hi,
How fortunate that these bored high schoolers not only saw the
flaming meteor but correctly calculated its' trajectory and impact site,
called police, and in the dark, still arrived in enough time to burn
their hands!
How efficient are todays' youth!
(I wonder if they are this competent in cleaning their rooms?)
And how thoughtful of the meteor to fall near their high school!
I especially liked, "only to discover several tiny craters filled with
the still-hot rocks."
However, after seeing the photo, I'm sure that these are genuine Canard
fragments.

Hi Ken,

I'll have them check it out, but we had two independent witnesses who
e-mailed us saying they saw a firery streak across the sky as well at the
right time -- one in Tenino and one in Monroe. Three other experts are on
the scene today with our reporter and they seem to agree it was a meteorite
too, so all signs point to it being legit :)

Gentlemen:
I enjoyed your article about the teens finding a meteorite.
After seeing the picture and reading the entire story, I fear you
and the Daily World to be victims of a hoax
I will not go into detail at this time, but the story is not
consistent with meteorite falls. Pict is not of fresh meteorites.

Thanks Matteo,
My faith in human nature is somewhat restored.
The author of this Elma 'wrong' page learned a great deal about
meteorite identification from the Hupes.

The Elma sellers on ebay have displayed no reasoning ability

Last year, 'silkarrow' aka 'asianartifacts888'
discovered when selling 'Nepal Adzes' by simply adding 'meteorite' to
the description, his final auction price doubled or tripled.
This year he is repeating his success with his 'Mekong River Meteorite'.
(Hum, a meteorite in a river for years and it shows no hint of rust?
Neat Trick!) The seller does not know meteorites. He has not returned my
emails when I have asked him for the results of further test he promised
to try on the Adzes.

Mark,
Actually you would want to do the reverse.
Pump the air OUT of the vessel.
This would cause the solution to permeate the meteorite immediately.

[meteorite-list] The Meteorite that panicked a Nation

2003-10-31 Thread magellon
All,
Last evening marked the passing of an event that occurred
Sixty-five years ago. Even though many of us were not yet born,
we have all heard of about the panic associated with this event.

If you had turned your radio on just after 8' o'clock to your favorite
CBS station you would be entertained by Ramon Raquello and
his orchestra when the show was interrupted by a special report
from Intercontinental Radio News. The bulletin was to let people
know that scientists had noticed explosions on the surface
of Mars, and that something was flying towards the
earth at an incredible speed. After the announcement the music
began again. Then another news report came on. This time to
inform the audience that a huge, flaming object, believed to
be a meteorite had fallen to earth at Grovers Mill, New Jersey.
At Grovers Mill it was realized that the object was not a meteorite.
Eventually, a huge creature with a drooling V-shaped mouth
emerged from the object, zapped the people dead, and torched
the field with its heat-ray. And the horror continued
Listeners thought they were tuning in live reports from the scene
but were actually hearing Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater
on the Air with their updated version of H.G. Wells' sci-fi novel
The War of the Worlds.

The War of the Worlds broadcast terrified people from
coast to coast. Families fled their homes, covering their mouths
with handkerchiefs trying not to breathe the harmful black gas.
People packed into churches. Roads leading out of cities were
jammed with cars. People across the nation thought they were
going to die. It is estimated that over six million people listened
to that broadcast, and close to two million thought it was a
news bulletin.

Re: [meteorite-list] Chicxulub Meteorite

2003-11-09 Thread magellon

Dave,
A better example is here: (more ridiculous excuses)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2200664192
I wrote Mr. Shomin and asked how he got the material.
he wrote: "I took a trip to cancun, then took a car trip to Chicxulub
-& used
a magnet for final separation fron beach sand, then did a nickel test
at home.
Magnification reveales more detail like shiny metal flakes & metal
balls
from heat - most samples have native soil stuck to it, my results are
open
to the jugdement of others with better  equipment. While i do
have a
2 week return policy if any customer would complain i would refund
at any time.
Fair? If you can get a hold of better equipment i would be willing
to send
you a free sample for evaluation. Bernie M-M"
I suggested (1) tell the truth to the bidders and (2)  send a sample
to NEMS
to first verify if was  meteoritic.
He added the addendum but didn't send any to NEMS.
(He indicated it was because he had less than a gram)
Sorry, he should have done this before putting any up for sale.
So there is no meteoritic verification, much less an actual Chicxulub
meteorite
as advertised.
Secondly, Steve Schoner found this article saying that drill samplings
show that
the meteorite was probably a  carbonaceous chondrite.
Even this small sample was fossilized. There is no proof  that
any original meteorite still exits other than the iridium layer.

Re: [meteorite-list] Seven New Galaxy Class Meteorites on eBay

2003-11-23 Thread magellon
Andre,
Several years ago Ebay suggested they may remove
all meteorite auctions. Whether they were serious
or not, no one wanted/wants that to happen.

So, I.M.C.A. was born.
While I.M.C.A. cannot prevent the sale of wrongs,
it does provides a safe haven for meteorite transactions.
(20-25% of the meteorite auctions are IMCA members')
Education and expert opinions are for the members' asking.

Why ebay is so slow to eliminate blatant dishonest sellers
(as Sterling documented) is strange. But ebay will never
prevent the auction of wrongs. Bidders can only be better
informed by education.

It is up to us to spread the knowledge. Sellers can encourage new purchasers to join
I.M.C.A., Members can share what they've
learned when the opportunity presents itself.

Recently Dave Freeman was on ktv2 Salt Lake City for a
morning and evening meteorite spot and he displayed his
IMCA logo. ( Way to go Dave!)

The problem is Mis-identification and some fraud,
the solution is education.
Each has to think that "I am the solution, now
how can I help and have fun at the same time "
Who would like to see your meteorite collection?
Have you thought about sharing your knowledge with others?
Can you make a talk outline?
What grade or class would you like to share meteorite info?
What can I do?

Please note that Mr. Finkle has sold fake Park Forest and Odessa
shale as meteorites. (Don't forget the legendary
"Odessa Gold Meteorite" - now there is a story for the grand kids)
However, I must say one good thing. He does hold the record for
the most auctions closed by ebay.

Bill,
I think you have it backwards.
You defend someone who sells fake meteorites in the
Meteorite Section of ebay. Then you attempt to label
anyone who tries to educate or help others.
Even going to the point of belittling the Hupes' meteorite accounts.
It appears form my perspective that the " just plain hateful"
one is sitting at your computer terminal.
I truly hope I am wrong.

[meteorite-list] VOTE IMCA an observation EGO????

2001-12-23 Thread magellon

>I don't have any answers here, but just a question, based on

I don't have the answer either. I just
know that original IMCA was based on
no one person having the upper hand. All were to be equals. When we
began voting, I felt that the majority's will would be known and accordingly
the direction the association should move. First a discussion, then a vote,
is the only way I know to obtain a consensus.
Rhett, however was deeply hurt by the way
things were regressing. The name was already established. Web Domain was
set up.  List of members were made up and posted. Yahoo Groups was
set up. Paypal account eastablished  All of this was now to be changed!
Can you understand his frustration? To some it may not seem like "that
much"  but  where is the end ? Perhaps in the beginning
there should have been more discussion and then a vote. But there wasn't
because there were no members at the time.
Efforts to persuade him to return have also
failed.  I hope he returns to the fine job he started. Not to change
what has been done but to progress forward

Mark,
Good detective work. Yes, it is good to avoid ebay's eyes, where possible,
however, I see nothing harassing in asking legit questions about a
auction.
Nor do I wish to badger someone who is determined to sell corpolite
as "meteorites." But , yea, among this group one could probably find most
of the "buyers" of meteorites e-mails if not many sellers but that is considered
confidential info between buyer and seller. Would not be good PR to reveal
such.

I not sure that contacting a buyer  DURING or AFTER an auction
is permitted..
See eBay rules:
"Buying Offenses
If you've experienced any of these issues, please report offenses
to the Investigations link below. Disciplinary action may result in the
indefinite suspension of a user's account, temporary  suspension,
or a formal warning. eBay will consider the circumstances of an alleged
offense and  the user's trading records before taking action.
  Transaction interference - Emailing
buyers in an open or ended transaction to warn them away from a
seller or item."
EBay's wording includes "ended transactions "  I got around this
the other day when an eBayer was reselling a meteor-wrong. I asked him
if he could verifiy that it was
genuine and that it looked like many of the meteor-wrongs recently
sold on eBay. He came to the conclusion himself of returning the meteor-wrong
to the original seller for a refund. However, if a buyer does not try to
resell it, then contacting them is against eBay policy.

Thanks for the note, Ken. Glad you like the little Camel Donga. I hated
to part with it, but I had to sell a few specimens from my collection
earlier in the semester to help pay for school.

Interestingly enough, Dr. Berryman is an adjunct professor here at MTSU.
I actually took a class from him last semester. At the time, I had no
idea he had an unclassified meteorite and he had no idea that I was
interested in meteorites. He was actually referred to me by my advisor
when, during a casual conversation, he mentioned to her that he had
something that might be a meteorite.

I gave him a crash course on meteoritics, we cut the specimen, and I sent
off a chunk to UCLA to have it classified. Alan Rubin analyzed it and
gave it a classification of H5. And yes, Dr. Berryman gave me a small
piece to put in my collection =)

Again, thanks for the note, hopefully you will see the Palmersville
meteorite again in the next edition of the Meteoritical Bulletin.

Best Regards,

-chris.

Re: [meteorite-list] Floating Fireball Over Texas Caught On Video

2002-01-12 Thread magellon

Ron & All,
In my college years, we would glue wooden popsicle sticks to make a
cross. On this, one could secure 8-10 birthday candles with drops of melted
wax. Tying the four ends of the cross with thread to four corners of a
large dry cleaning bag. Then sealing the top hole (of the bag) and lighting
the candles, the bag would fill with hot air and lift into the sky. (You
had to pick a windless day or risk candle blow out) Sometimes the bag
itself would catch on fire. (FIRE DANGER - DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF)
I think some unqualified Texas personnel are trying to resurrect my
lighter-than-air "experiments"...

Hi all: Since
a few folks on the board have opted to slam an individual for his ongoing
postings of meteorwrongs, I thought I'd post one of my old favorites, how
to let a guy down easy.  This is a real letter to a real guy, and
it fits the occasion.  Good for a laugh, and some of you guys need
to take the hint.
There is a gentleman in Newport, VT named Scott Williams
who digs things out of his back yard and sends them to the Smithsonian
Institute, labeling them with scientific names, and insisting that they
are actual archaeological finds. Here is an actual response from the Smithsonian
Institution.
___

Smithsonian Institute
207 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20078
Dear Mr. Williams:
Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute,
labeled "93211-D, layer seven, next to the clothesline post ... Hominid
skull."  We have given this specimen a careful and detailed examination,
and regret to inform you that we disagree with your theory that it represents
conclusive proof of the presence of Early Man in Charleston County two
million years ago.
Rather, it appears that what you have found is the head
of a Barbie doll, of the variety that one of our staff, who has small children,
believes to be "Malibu Barbie."  It is evident that you have given
a great deal of thought to the analysis of this specimen, and you may be
quite certain that those of us who are familiar with your prior work in
the field were loathe to come to contradiction with your findings.
However, we do feel that there are a number of physical attributes of the
specimen which might have tipped you off to its modern origin:
1. The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains
are typically fossilized bone.
2. The cranial capacity of the specimen is approximately
9 cubic centimeters, well below the threshold of even the earliest identified
proto-homonids.
3. The dentition pattern evident on the skull is more
consistent with the common domesticated dog than it is with the ravenous
man-eating Pliocene clams you speculate roamed the wetlands during that
time.
This latter finding is certainly one of the most intriguing
hypotheses you have submitted in your history with this institution, but
the evidence seems to weigh rather heavily against it.  Without going
into too much detail, let us say that:
A. The specimen looks like the head of a Barbie doll that
a dog has chewed on.
B. Clams don't have teeth.
It is with feelings tinged with melancholy that we must
deny your request to have the specimen carbon-dated.  This is partially
due to the heavy load our lab must bear in its normal operation, and partly
due to carbon-dating's notorious inaccuracy in fossils of recent geologic
record.  To the best of our knowledge, no Barbie dolls were produced
prior to 1956 AD, and carbon-dating is likely to produce wildly inaccurate
results.
Sadly, we must also deny your request that we approach
the National Science Foundation Phylogeny Department with the concept of
assigning your specimen the scientific name Australopithecus spiff-arino.
Speaking personally, I, for one, fought tenaciously for the acceptance
of your proposed taxonomy, but was ultimately voted down because the species
name you selected was hyphenated, and didn't really sound like it might
be Latin.
However, we gladly accept your generous donation of this
fascinating specimen to the museum.  While it is undoubtedly not a
Hominid fossil, it is, nonetheless, yet another riveting example of the
great body of work you seem to accumulate here so effortlessly. You should
know that our Director has reserved a special shelf in his own office for
the display of the specimens you have previously submitted to the Institution,
and the entire staff speculates daily on what you will happen upon next
in your digs at the site you have discovered in your Newport back yard.
We eagerly anticipate your trip to our nation's capital
that you proposed in your last letter, and several of us are pressing the
Director to pay for it.  We are particularly interested in hearing
you expand on your theories surrounding the trans-positating fillifitation
of ferrous ions in a structural matrix that makes the excellent juvenile
Tyrannosaurus Rex femur you recently discovered take on the deceptive appearance
of a rusty 9-mm Sears Craftsman automotive crescent wrench.

it is just wonderful that you have found a way to realize your
dreams for even a very brief
moment. And how thoughtful of you to return and share this good news with
so many who ridiculed you after repeated attempts to make us "all believers".
And now you have found no less than TWO lunar specimens at that!

Please, Mohamed, share with us the name of the REAL expert? (Also, which

   Actually,
I just wanted to thank you for the ride. Nobody has this many &

days. You've been leading the group "on" and it has been a "trip" Where
did you get the wrongs? Why have you never given any location other than
"the region"? (even a country would be nice) What is your real name?
Where are you?  Was it really that funny?

Mohamed, Robert and All,
Robert is correct! I did a search on "Google" for "DiamondMeteor".
Mr. Yousef has been trying to get buyers to "resrve a piece of this meteorite"
for awhile. ("Google" makes CACHED snapshots.)
 http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:ALSEskGhdsEC:pages.britishlibrary.net/mhy10/meteor/reserve.htm+DiamondMeteor&hl=en
 http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:XK2q42HOWkYC:pages.britishlibrary.net/mhy10/meteor/prices.htm+DiamondMeteor&hl=en
He thoughtfully changed his web site just for our benefit. Or perhaps
he just packs up his "tent" by making a slight address changes.
    Mohamed, if "registration
and formal classifcation of the meteorite are underway", why are you asking
the List if they are "meteorites?"  Is that how you formally classify
them?  Did you actually get money for any "pieces?"   I
can't say for sure, but it looks like you're blowing your chance to become
an IMCA member

identified as being " SECRET."
Are you sure it is safe to tell us about this? After all I would want

And, please be very careful not to tell us too much. (Then it
wouldn't be secret)

Re: [meteorite-list] Simple minded individuals.

2002-02-04 Thread magellon

George,
I also encourage the helping of new ones to the list. I don't think anyone on the list
does not.
But I must ask: You refer to MHY as the "kid." Do you know how old he is?
Do you know anything more about him than has been posted so far? Why?
MHY can ask questions and he gets answers. When MHY is asked questions he does no
respond. Is
this fair? It is not rude to ask for help and then be critical when it is given? I
agree one should not be rude
in return but WHAT DOES Mohamed WANT ?
Please, George, enlighten all of us to this QUESTION. Mohamed won't. That is what
has frustrated the
rest of us.
How can you be so patient with MHY and not understand the utter frustration in
others? What right do
you have to preach to others under what circumstances they can and cannot use their
valuable time in
helping others. If you are so righteous "to take on one for the team" then do so
quietly. It was your
decision and not the teams'. Don't try to lay a 'guilt trip' on unselfish members
who have a better use of
their time.
Respectfully,
Ken Newton

[meteorite-list] Copter Crash - Meteorite?

2002-02-22 Thread magellon

All,
The tragic US Army copter crash (which left no survivors) was witnessed
by fishermen about a mile or two from the crash site. I find it very odd
that they would think the copter was brought down by a meteorite
Quote:
'Rodrigo Alanano, mayor of Dauin town on nearby Negros, said he talked
with other fishermen who were about one or two miles from the
crash
  site.
"They saw a helicopter in flames in the air, then it exploded
as it fell into
the sea," he said. "They thought it was a meteorite."'
End quote
What a strange conclusion? Perhaps they were drinking?

wouldn't expect someone a mile or two away to mistake it for a meteorite!

Steve,
I'm glad your transaction was smooth. I was not as fortunate. Eventually I got my
meteorite after countless emails, and dealing with incredible excuses and lies. This
goes beyond being lazy. He IS dishonest. He has done this to many customers. Many
(like myself) do not give him negative feedback on eBay because he would only give
negative feedback in return and has! Sadly, Brad is reaping what he himself has sown.

All,
I received this email from a new meteorite collector who gave me permission

Hi, I liked your info on  Meteorwrongs
.  Very interesting.  I did purchase
two small and very interesting Eagle Buttes for a total of $20.
These are
without any doubt slag.  When I contacted the seller he put up
a huge fuss
saying that they are indeed meteorites and I was wrong.  I pushed
for a
refund and he told me he would refund minus shipping and that they
better be
exactly as he shipped them or a refund would be denied.  He said
he has very
detailed photos of each piece 'for insurance purposes'.  I am
certain he
will not be refunding my money because they will mysteriously show
up
damaged even though they are well packaged.  I checked his feedback
and
several people have bought these.  The way he has them pictured
on his
auction made it difficult to see the foam and air bubbles which would
make
anyone suspicious.  You can thank guys like these for turning
away new
collectors.

granidiorite and some granitic areas. This may be terrestrial iron, but
if so, it perhaps may have become airborne from the volcano?, as it is

size, but not considerably so, (125 gms), and it is slightly magnetic,
but not considerably so. Size is 2.5" x 1.5" x 1". Incidentally, there

[meteorite-list] More on: Your opinion, please...

2002-03-21 Thread magellon

Here is the reply from the Aussie gal with the meteor wrong:

"I appreciate very much your efforts on my behalf and the interest you have
taken. I took your advice and rubbed the sample on medium grade sandpaper -
it rubbed the surface of the paper right off, but the stone was unmarked. No
scratches or shiny area. It sure is tough stuff!!
I then rubbed it as you said on the back of a ceramic tile and it left dark
gray marks, so I guess it's not hematite. I would assume then that it is
magnetite, although only slightly magnetic.
So, it is still a bit of a mystery. What do you think?
Incidentally, Ken, when I think about it, I may have found a few small
pieces of this same material in a stream nearby, when searching alluvials
for corundum. If they turn out to look like the same material, I will send
them to you if you are interested. They were not prolific, probably enough
to fill a matchbox in approx. half a ton of gravel. I will see what I can
find."
Thanks again for the responses.
Best,
Ken Newton

?
An auction can be canceled at any time buy the seller ?

If it hasn't
received any bids, yes.  Seems fairit might frustrate people who
were planning on bidding on it, but from the seller's point of view, if
there's absolutely no bidder-commitment, no visible interest on his item,
he should be able to change his mind about selling it, for whatever reason.

Actually there may be bids, but the bids must first be closed.
EBay says: "Canceling Bids:
You can cancel bids in an auction if one or more of the following circumstances
apply:
1.You have decided to end the auction early
2.A bidder contacts you to back out of a bid
3.You cannot verify the identity of a bidder after trying
all reasonable means of contact
Note: Since bid cancellations are publicized in the auction bidding
history, you will be asked to provide a reason for your cancellation to
bidders.
End the Auction Early
You may miss out on just the bid you've been waiting for if you end
your auction early. Still, there may be times when you have a valid reason
to end an auction early. You may end your auction if you decide not to
sell the item. To do this, you must choose the option to cancel all bids
on your auction. You may also choose the option to sell to the high bidder.
You will need to provide a reason explaining why you have ended the
auction early. This reason can be found at the top of the Closed item page.
You may also provide additional details in your item description. "
Respectfully,
Ken Newton

to be an impact feature. Both surface geology and sub-surface
information from wells support its identification as such."
"The geophysical contours show a central uplift and a surrounding
ring depression."
"Meteorite Craters and Impact Structures of the Earth", Hodge, Paul,
1994, University of Cambridge Press.
And
"Two probable Late Cretaceous astroblemes in Western Canada:
Eagle Butte, Alberta and Dumas, Saskatchewan". Geophysics, 41,
1261 - 1271"
Is there existing meteoritic material associated with the Eagle Butte
structure?  I don't know.  All that I can say for sure is
that the material we
received is not meteoritic.
A word of caution:
Some of the longer-term members of the List may remember
our involvement with material that came to be referred to as
the "Emerald Meteorite".  (summary story about the "Emerald
Meteorite", for those unfamiliar with it is at:
http://www2.suite224.net/~editorsb/updates/meteorite.htm
)
Our chemical analysis showed it to be a foundry
by-product, probably from the lining of a refractory kiln and not meteoritic.
Some members may still have samples of this material in their collections.
Legal consequences resulting from this were unpleasant.  Fortunately
Tim McCoy's (Smithsonian) independent analysis concurred with ours
and the finders/promoters backed off.
My point ( something I'm sure that many List members have experienced)
is that it is sometimes very, very, difficult to convince someone
untrained or unfamiliar with meteoritics that what they have is of
terrestrial occurrence. If they choose a legal path it can become
costly and uncomfortable for all.  I find it far better in these
circumstances,
that when asked, to offer an "opinion" on the material rather than
to
speak in "absolutes" that may be heard as a denouncement.
Everyone has an opinion but denouncements can get you sued.
Of course, this is just my "opinion".

[meteorite-list] Ebay Tektite "wrong"

2002-04-02 Thread magellon

Auction -    AWESOME
CANYON DIABLO TEKTITE 307.08 GRAMS NR
Descript - " The only thing I guarantee about this specimen, is that
it is from the heart of the Diablo Canyon  Scatterfield! I firmly
believe it to be a "Tektite" (a mixture of meteorite/earth metals and silicates
ejected from the crater by  the force of impact). No doubt the Fusion
Crust and stress lines on this Tektite are due to it being cast high enough
in earth's atmosphere to have experienced "reentry.""

Wow - A "tektite" that was ejected into space and still "landed" near
the impacting crater - neat trick! ( I don't even believe "it" is from
Diablo Canyon)

Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into
the
coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that don't import
their
oil from the Saudis.
Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up
the
tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my
family,
and my friends. I thought it might be interesting for you to know which
oil
companies are the best to buy gas from.
Major companies that import Middle Eastern oil
(for the period 9/1/00 - 8/31/01).
Shell 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco... 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon/Mobil.. 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon. 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco 62,231,000 barrels
If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION!
Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Citgo 0 barrels
Sunoco 0 barrels
Conoco 0 barrels
Sinclair 0 barrels
BP/Phillips 0 barrels
All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and
can
be easily documented. Refineries located in the U.S. are required to
state
where they get their oil and how much they are monthly basis.

[meteorite-list] Classic eBay M-Wrong

Hi,

>From Deep Deep Outer Space

This is THE CLASSIC M-wrong. In an email the guy even told me "I found
it the morning of the first night of the Band of meteorites passing
through Earth's path.  We were pelted in this area for several
nights but I
am the only one that has reported recovering one."  Also, "Just
in the short year that I have owned this I have answered questions, displayed,
and shipped this precious object to all parts of the planet for viewing."
Yet, I was the first person to ask if his find was attracted to a magnet.
(He did not know and does not have a magnet)
Everything from the description to the photos looks and sounds
fake. When I ask a seller of a m-wrong if I can use his photo and description
for my M-wrong Page, the dishonest ones (knowing their meteorite is a fake)
usually say no or agree under  anonymity. This guy wanted publicity,
so I'm convinced that he actually believes all the unbelievable stuff he
is saying. That's incredible!

John Reed wrote:
Ken , I think your making to big a deal out of this.
If you are referring to educating new collectors, I hope so!
Any serious person will check them out before spending
a sizable amount of money
I believe new collectors from many lands arrive daily on eBay and have
no idea of what is or is not a meteorite or where to look to learn more.
Likewise, any object found  that looks different must be a meteorite
and must be auctioned for big bucks. (The reserve on the auction below
is three million $)
You spent 40.00 on a phony but, look what it got
you your now an expert on the whole subject.
A dishonest or uneducated seller improves the hobby by selling fakes? I
don't think so!  How many persons have given up the meteorite hobby
because they got burnt ? (I don't  know!) Fortunately,  I met
so many nice and helpful dealers that I was drawn in to this amazing hobby.
You know what they say  about guilt or innocence
in the criminal justice system " Its better that 100 guilty men go free
than 1 innocent man be found guilty "here's how that applies to meteorites
Its better that a 100 people buy a 40.00  fake than 1 real meteorite
be discarded
Each case in the justice system is examined with both sides presenting
its case and judged on its own merits. The auctions on
eBay are presented from only one side with picture/s (evidence) so
bad that it is often useless. So I don't really see a correlation. This
is a bad example, but let's look at your illustration with a view to the
total cost.  In the justice system what if the guilty men let free
are killers who will each  kill again? What good is it to save one
innocent man at the cost of 100 more innocent persons. In the case of meteorwrongs,
those 100 wrongs will again be sold over and over and over as real meteorites.
And this is better than trashing one real meteorite?
Also even fake meteorites can make people curious
and genuinely interested which means your collection is worth more just
by the amount of that interest I am a licensed landscape contractor and
guess what? I charge more because a lot of times  the unlicensed can't
do the work therefor more work is funneled to me more demand for a higher
standard means more for $ me.  I think meteorites will naturally follow
that same course and be found out in the end only to the benefit of
the legitimate collector  I really think the focus should be on quicker
and more  conclusive testing
I'll  be more than happy to change my M-wrong site if you have some
good ideas. But should I change it without specific suggestions of something
better?
Universities are not well equiped for real testing
and I know by thier methods they are probably overlooking the most rarest
type the low metals since they primarily test with a magnet  Where
are all the private labs hiding where you can pay and find out EXACTLY
what you have? , they are out there but' their not set up for meteorite
ID that well  Its not an easy process getting a straight answer on
a rock sample in fact its very difficult  it needs to be streamlined
Is their a machine you can buy to test samples?
I thought you were familiar with how the Universities  and private
labs did testing? For more info go to
 Meteorite Studies
click on "Found a Meteorite   Click Here" on right hand page
at bottom. Mr. Weir not only lists 13 facilities that classify but the
physical methods involved are listed at the bottom of the page for each
type of classification.
shove it in like an oven turn a dial out comes a
print out of your samples enerts,  if there is I'm going to get one
and start charging all those fakers 5$ each to conclusively absolutely,
undeniably certifiably identify their ?  I think ther could be a big
demand  What do you think?    Also check this out,
this is what the universitiy called quartz let me know what you think
http://www.FINDALLTRADES.COM/projects/Snowwhite.htm
Thanks John
After carefully examining your photo, I am pleased to report that I wouldn't
want to make a big deal out of this being real or not. It really doesn't
matter.  Just remember these wise words." so even fake meteorites
can make people curious and genuinely interested which means your collection
is worth more just by the amount of that interest."  That will be
$5.00 please. : > )

as they had not been cleaned.  I then wrote back asking if he would
guarantee these as being metal (nickel/iron) ,  I have no record of
a reply.
Jeannie, I think the way to get this guy is his own reference to: "
It is forbidden to collect this material now after the federal government
slapped a irreplacable resourse label on it." I have always thought that
this regulation referred to core material and not oxide. If so,
he has trapped himself. However, I don't know where to get more info on
this. Perhaps the someone on the List knows?
I did write "j.c.z.inc" (address - [EMAIL PROTECTED]) encouraging
this person to refund  the monies only to get a harsh reply threatening
to sue me.( sound familiar?)   Hopefully, others will write this
person.(Auction in dispute -  Item
# 1088285627 )  A large number of emails could have an attitude
adjusting effect.
Best,
Ken Newton
PS - This person also wrote claiming to have 150 satisfied meteorite
customers, yet he has only 16 feedbacks. Of those 16 only 3 are for Canyon
Diablo Meteorites and of those only 2 are different persons.  Where
are the other 148?

Hello list! First
off, let me thank again everyone who responded so quickly and thoughtfully
to my dilemma.  I so much appreciate the kindness and generosity of
this list.  What a great group of people! Since
I have given the seller ample time to make good, and right this situation
to no avail I'm going to post all the details of the transaction in hopes
that no one else will run into the same problems. The
material is pale and orangy/tan in color.  Some pieces are slightly
attracted to a magnet (but obviously less than to a real CD), and others
are not.  They are mostly rather flat and angular with many having
a layered appearance.  The heft is also noticeably lighter than Canyon
Diablos. Yes, the purchase was made on Ebay.
The auction # is 1088285627 and is still available for viewing.  The
title of the auction is "30+ Pieces of Canyon Diablo Meteorite".
As you can see, the photo is not the best.  I have been tracking the
seller closely and they have not posted any more "meteorite" auctions since
the one I bought, just garage sale junk.  I would be very suprised
if they are members of this list, or of the "meteorite community" in general.
There were some auctions of this material sold before mine, however.
I do not recognize any of the bidders or winners of these auctions but
I am not really familiar with people's Ebay user IDs. The
user's name is Judith McCabe, with a user ID of "j.c.z.inc".  This
is a new user ID.  The one in place for the sale of the "meteorite"
material was "bubbamisen".  There was no return address on the box
I received in the mail, but the post mark was Oswego, NY. After
expressing my dissatisfaction and wish to return the merchandise, this
is the response I received from the seller: "The items sent
you are deffinetly canyon diablo meteorite as listed in issue 5 of the
meteorite encyclopedia. If as you say you have indeed been a dealer you
would know this. We have over 150 satisfied customers with this material.
And we can prove the material was collected from the crater rim. " I
emailed back with a very straightforward and polite reply, explaining to
the best of my ability why I felt the material was misrepresented and asking
for an address to return the material.  I received no reply. If
anyone has any knowledge of this person, or this auction, or has had dealings
with her please let me know (on or offlist).  I would be interested
to know.  I'll keep everyone posted with what happens, just so you
know. I'm also going to try to take some pictures
this evening of the material I was sent next to some known Canyon Diablos,
and if I can get a good image I will post it here so you can see it firsthand.Thank
you again everyone, and any more replies I get will be most appreciated. Remember
Ebayers, it's a jungle out there!  : ) Regards

No Bill Mason listed on p268. Does he go by a business name?
There are seven dealers listed under DIAMOND CRYSTALS but no Bill Mason.
Would you like me to list contact info with some of these dealers?

[meteorite-list] Re: Burnin Desire! [Fwd: Naples Meteorite!]

2002-06-04 Thread magellon

Kevin,
I figured if anyone had the "rest of the story", it would be you!
That explains why Harry Horn and the info Babe reported "some persons
had questioned it even being a meteorite" (looking at each other as to
why would anyone mess up this great story!!!) Your calling the reporter
and my emailing the news director at least had some effect!
Can't wait to see if they actually report NASA's results!
Kevin, great follow through and update!
THANKS,
Ken Newton

Kevin,
Did you see the report by It was on WZVN tv - Naples, Fl.  this
morning and at 6pm. It seems a young man found a red-hot "meteorite" at
the base of a palm tree in Naples. No meteorite was shown, just a burnt
area at the base of a palm. The "meteorite" was magnetic and sent to NASA
for testing. I checked their web site  http://www.abc-7.com/ . It
is not mentioned there as yet. I emailed the news director after seeing
the morning blurb and expressed my doubts that the "meteorite" was genuine.
I was thanked for my concern and told that  NASA was going to check
it out.   I noticed that he then  spent 11 mins. viewing
my meteorwrong page.
The evening report included the fact that many persons had phoned in
after the report and some had doubted that it was a real meteorite. He
also include comments from an expert from the Smithsonian Institution that
hot meteorites are extremely rare but possible.
Ron Baalke has not heard of this yet either. If you find out any more
will you  share your info?

I apologize for this Off-Topic subject, but I would
like to take this opportunity to personally thank Troy
Bell, for his efforts in trying to determine the
origin of a particular type of meteor-wrong that is
commonly seen on eBay.  Troy found his first specimen
in the gravel of a parking lot near where he lives in
Texas.  When Troy told me that the gravel was a
typical "slag", I told him to try and find more of
this LBR (Little Black Rock) and to take some samples
of the slag gravel.  He found 2 more "little black
rocks", which he sent to me, along with samples of the
slag gravel.
My examination confirmed that the LBRs and the slag
have a common origin.  In addition, these LBRs are
made from the same material that I have encountered
numerous times from people wanting their "meteorites"
identified.  And I'm sure many on this List have
encountered this, as well.  Lately, a third of the
meteor-wrongs that I have encountered are of this
"sulfide-rich" material.  Although there appears to be
various sources for this material, I have always
contended that this was waste material from an ore
smelting process [slag].  But now, Troy's observant
eye has found the "smoking gun" evidence that confirms
that this material is a slag.
This confirmation also raises the concern that some of
these LBRs could have elevated concentrations of
arsenic and lead.
The following images show a cut surface of this
material.  Because of the above concern, BE ADVISED -
to never DRY cut or grind this material, and to treat
the cuttings and coolant with caution.
Image #1:

The interior "looks like" a natural sulfide mineral
with a highly specular, metallic luster.  But it is
not a metal.  Mostly crystalline with needle-shaped
laths (an atypical crystal habit for sulfides).  The
exterior has a patina.  Having been exposed to the
forces of weathering, and over time, the sulfide-rich
rock has formed a black tarnish.
Image #2:

Close-up of the cut surface. Locally vesicular;
cavities will show cleavage for these synthetic
(man-made) crystals. There are some inclusions of
melted silicates.
As mentioned earlier, this kind of meteor-wrong has
long been seen on eBay, but typically being auctioned
as "Arizona ?? Meteorite"!!
I couldn't find any current "meteorite" auction like
this, but this "mineral" auction looks like the same
kind of material, but without the black tarnish:

Now that it has been identified, my curiosity about
this material has been satisfied, and I will now move
on to the next "mystery rock" (hopefully, it will be a
real meteorite;-).  But in the meanwhile, it may prove
beneficial (since this stuff is so widespread) to have
this "identified" material on a meteor-wrong web page
in order to educate future meteor-wrong sellers.
