Meteorite Collectors do it with their rocks dude.

A place to fall. Besides striking down the occasional mother in law at a
crucial moment (this is more of a job for Thor), I would have loved
something to fall in the days when meteorites were not thought to come from
the sky, and definitely not from space. Shock horror! Anything to stir up
some ancient priest, as he's about to sacrifice the astronomer.

Apologies if this message gets posted twice - I sent it from the wrong mail account
before:

Hi all,

I haven't read the other entries, 'cause I didn't want to get
influenced, hopefully I'm not duplicating anybody elses ideas. I came
up with two possible competitions:

1. 'Meteorite Collectors Do It Insert Words Here!' - Come up with
a suitable and witty slogan for a meteorite collectors tee-shirt,
Lot's of people on the list have great senses of humour, this would
let them shine. (Obviously the slogan doesn't need limiting to the
'collectors do it...' format)

2. Incoming!!! - If you could choose a time and place for a meteorite
to fall (historical or in the future): When, where and why would it
be?

I think the first is probably my favorite (requires very little
indepth knowledge of meteorites which suits me better, and the
entries should give us a laugh :) but i've put two since there have
been lots of entries already - hopefully one of these is original.

Thanks also to the regular posters on this list, i've learnt a lot by
lurking in the background...

Matt.

Last night I was doing some searching on the Net. It started out as a Google search on a specific meteorite and turned into aimless wandering through some amazing sites that were totally unknown to me.

So here is my suggestion.

I am sure we have all done that kind of wandering, particularly late at night, and discovered some extremely interesting sites and some extremely outrageous ones. Now we each get to nominate ONE site, of course it will have to be about meteorites somehow.
I think we should eliminate ahead of time the sites we all know, like David Weir's or Meteorite Exchange, and the "virtual shops" of all the dealers on the List.

Once all the sites have been nominated, we could either let Mark decide which one is the winner, or he could ask the List-members to vote. His decision.

Hello Anne and list,

Thank you everybody for there suggestions. Us as a group have came up with
more suggestions then I ever could.

I would like to comment on Anne's last couple lines

...we could either let Mark decide which one is the winner, or he could ask
the List-members to vote. His decision.

The winner of this contest will decide what Contest #7 will be. However,
after that, if the group likes or cares to...I would like to turn the
Meteorite Contest #'ing thing over to the list. Meaning that anyone could
come up with a prize and a contest for Contest #8, ect. I think this has
been a good way for the list members that are usually quiet to e-mail the
list and feel more of a part or those that are new to meteorites to e-mail
the list. It is a great way to get to know each other. I will continue to
run the contest every so often as long as there is interest, so I am not
saying I'm backing out or quiting or the like, but I would like to offer it
to other Big Collector's and fellow meteorite sellers. Plus if someone
else ran a contest then I could enter:-) What do you think?

I would also like to see group voting at some time if possible. I tried one
time to get group voting and did not think I got enough response. (again)
What do you think?

Thanks again for your e-mails and with thatI will be quiet for the rest
of the day...probley...:-)

Mark

How

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Contest #6 - FREE NWA869

2002-08-15 Thread TMS/TNS/HRC

Hi Mark,

How about a word puzzle? For instance, you could give
someone a word or phrase and have them spell it out with meteorite names or
locations. For example, if the word was "meteorite" you might come up
with:

M - Murchison
E - Eagle Station
T - Taza
E - Etter
O - Ourique
R - Rumuruti
I - Ibitira
T - Toluca
E - Esquel

This could be done with variations like - Only use irons, stones, H5s, falls, finds, North American, African,
etc. You could announce ahead of time when you will post the phrase, so
everyone who wants to participate could be waiting on line. People could
prepare ahead of time by gathering materials, but they wouldn't know the word or
phrase until you posted it. Then the first person to geta
correctresponse posted back to the list or to you would win. I think
it would be fun!

OK Mark. My idea for contest #7is going to create a bit of work for you. But, how about a Meteorite Crossword Puzzle? The hints for the names of the meteorites could be as simple as something that could be found in the Bulletin, or as complicated as would require an exhaustive search of the internet.

The "bit"of work for you is going to be determining the clues for the puzzle. The names and putting them together in crossword fashion should be easier. Maybe. :-)

How about an internet "easter egg hunt" Give us a

helping you out with this by placing an egg on their website. Allowing mass

destination would be the URL of the meteorite prize, or GPS coordinates on a
map, or a lady named Ester to represent Esterville, etc. First one back to the

Mark,
I think some of the suggestions so far are great!
Contest suggestion: Persons can submit ONLY ONE photo of their favorite
meteorite from their personal collection.(might be more difficult as everyone
does not have camera). Those without digital could mail you a photo. Many
Winning categories, Best small Iron, Best large iron, nicest stone
micro, Best oriented, etc, etc. Since you are the judge you can determine
the category based on the entries received. (One favorite from each
collection would hopefully present a wide variety of entries.) This may
take longer as persons may have to process and mail photos...But everyone
would enjoy seeing the others' one favorite.

Simple contest suggestion:(1) Pre-announce date and time of Contest
(Like Sun 8th 5 PM EST) At that time you would quote a sentence
from
Rocks in Space or CEM (Everybody has Rocks in Space). The first
to email you the correct page # is the winner.

Best,
Ken

We could all use a good laugh, what with the rotten flooding in Europe
etc. How about My Funniest Meteorite Story? There have been some
hum-dingers posted to the list before; I'm sure there are some other great

2002-08-15 Thread fcressy

Hello all,

Another possible contest might be Where would you like to see the next fall
occur (backyards excluded)? A wide variety of answers could occur, from
serious to humorous to weird.
For an example, a contestant might wish for a fall to occur at Quartzite,
Arizona so he/she could collect the first Quartzite meteorite. Now that
could really cause some confusion on ebay :-)
Or what if a new fall were to occur in Emerald Bay, CA would you have the
real Emerald meteorite? How about a new nakhlite falling in Mars, PA? And
I'm sure one person might opt for Haag, Germany. I think the names are
nearly limitless.
Another 2 grams,
Frank

HOW ABOUT A CONTEST to see who can go to yahoogroups
the QUICKEST and make a meteorite contest e-mail
group to prevent the flood of these somewhat
information deprived e-mails?

how much Mark spent onshipping for contest 6.

Certainly not related to collection size or
knowlege level.
