config(8) and ugen/uhidev
I recently found myself the owner of an APC UPS that talks over USB. I installed apcupsd and disabled uhidev(4) with config(8) so that it would instead show up as ugen(4) as noted in the apcupsd docs. The dmesg lines below are both against a -stable GENERIC, and are not cumulative. Now I am looking to attach other USB items - camera, keyboard, mouse - that would undoubtedly require uhidev to work. I have tried several different methods to get things to cooperate, without success. I suspect that I have two options, but at this point I don't know how to accomplish either. A) Specifically configure ONLY the ugen0 device. B) Disable uhidev ONLY where the ugen0 needs to be found. Suggestions are welcome; thanks in advance. --david # disable uhidev # ugen0 at uhub0 port 1 ugen0: APC Back-UPS ES 750 FW:819.z2.D USB FW:z2, rev 1.10/1.06, addr 2 ugen1 at uhub0 port 2 ugen1: Canon Inc. Strange happenings with .forward
Ok, I'm fairly certain I've done something on my side, but I've no clue what. Running on a fresh install of 3.9-RELEASE, the only thing I've changed in mail is swapping the default 'localhost.cf' in /etc/rc.conf for 'sendmail.cf' in /etc/rc.conf.local, and installing pine to read it (mail frustrates me, and mutt annoys me). There are two user accounts on the system, one (czakelj) is used for sending emails relating to my website, and another (junk) which gets used when I need to test something without breaking the "real" address. I'd like to use a .forward file to bounce things from the real address to my regular one, since I don't always remember to log in and look for mail there. Of course, I tested it on the junk account first, with the following $ cat /var/www/home/junk/.forward [EMAIL PROTECTED] Things worked just swimmingly when I sent a test email, so I did the same thing to the real account. Only that address can't get through, because apparently it's being rejected by an upstream server despite my using the same laptop and same sending email address. The goal of any for-profit corporation is summed up in one line: Maximize shareholder profit. Therefore, MS will make it their goal to improve security only when it affects the bottom line. Most of the time they don't even have to improve security to affect the bottom line - they just have to go through the motions of appearing to improve security. If more people would come to understand the staggering importance of that single minded goal of any corporation the world would be a better place. Instead of appealing to corporations to exhibit the behaviours of a person, all we need to really worry about is appealing to (or threatening) their bottom line. And I did go through the Makefile too, since I first tried to build it on 3.9-release (and of course, it failed :)). Actually, there's a quick easy way to find out, I think it should be possible to get all the packages that's been built, drop it on another new box, and install the jdk package. Speaking of which, the original link indicated that it was kaffe that needed the 3.9-current sbrk patch. Should I try these packages from -current on the 3.9-release system, since kaffe was only needed to build the jdk? I realize that there might have been other changes in -current that may affect things - just wondering.

i've got a website where i'd like to be able to make a map and/or list of the various IPs and/or domains that visit it. i've got a large access.log file for the site, could this be used to generate a map of the geographic locations of the IPs that have visited it? alternately, it could make a listing of the domain names for the visiting IPs. any suggestions on a good way to do this would be appreciated.

How to enable hw crypto?
I have tried the following command to get the hw crypto to work: openssl speed des-cbc -engine cryptodev But the result I got is pretty much the same if I don't specify the cryptodev engine. The crypto card I have is hifn7956. I tried to compile hifn7751.c by commenting out #undef HIFN_DEBUG, hoping to get some debug msgs, but I got none. So the hifn driver is not really called. On FreeBSD I need to specify a -evp flag, However, if I specify -evp, it say "no EVP given". So it looks like that I need to provide a parameter to -evp. But I have no idea what are valid parms. On FreeBSD, -evp with no parm is OK. Environ: OpenBSD ver: 3.8 Processor: Intel Xeon 2.8G. Winston

This is a nice idea, but everyone makes mistakes. Services packs, errata, patches and upgrades will always be with us. The frequency and nature of the problems they indicate do tell something of the developers and organization that produced the code, though. Can MS incorporate any given technology, and do it fairly well? Sure. Believe it or not they have some top coders on staff there. Except for the very beginning that's never been their problem. Does MS, as an organization, have a focus on quality code, as it applies to the *system* they produce? They'd like it, and take it when it doesn't get in the way of other goals. But in general, no, that's not their focus as I see it. The result being that any collection of individual technologies will help them to only a limited extent. They're all bandaids on a poorly designed system. The same kind of incorporation of technologies into OpenBSD (ProPolice, recent memory stuff, etc.) is different. How? They're added as mitigation techniques to a quality system where they're hardly and seldom needed. The quality was already there in the design. The system wasn't fragile without them. OpenBSD got a bit more immune. So... it's not a technology issue, it's about goals and management. Ask Theo and the other devs what OpenBSD's goals are. Wait, it's right there on the site. Does OpenBSD/OpenSSH/etc. match with those goals? Uh, huh. Ask Gates, Ballmer and crew what MS's goals are. Or find it on the MS site. If none of that works you can speculate (I'm not going to). Do you think their goals fall as much in line with what you want as does OpenBSD's goals? OK, I was going to stay out of this. Then I was going to write a short response. Based on some other posts in misc I tried using aliases on a single carp interface instead of multiple carp interfaces on the same physical interface. I upgraded the primary to 3.9-stable and things seem to be operating as expected. I have not had any MASTER<-->MASTER issues that weren't self inflicted. I guess I'm not 100% sure if the cure was upgrading or migrating to aliases, but it's working. The self inflicted issue came when I added an alias IP to FW1:carp0 but not yet to FW2:carp0. Both FW1 and FW2 became master for the interface, until I added the alias to FW2. Thanks again for the pointers and the great OS! -Steve S.

I'm trying to use it to only allow one client per login/password, and I just figured MAC addresses would be more unique than an IP and easier to track between different sites. The login and password is still independent of the IP address. From thinking about it more, it's just simpler to track which IP address belongs to which login, and then when that user tries to login on a second client, the first one is barred access. This only allows one IP address per client. It does mean that the the IP tracking software needs to know a little more about the IP address that it created, and requires to be a bit more actively managed. PF, DNS, and internal network
Greetings everyone! Apologies in advance if this came through already. This question has to do with PF and DNS from my internal network to my ISP. Here is what I have done: Set /etc/sysctl.conf net.inet.ip.forwarding=1 Set /etc/rc.conf pf=YES Used the pf.conf file from the FAQ (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/example1.html). Except my "internal" is xl0 and my external is rl0. rl0 gets its IP dynamically. My network looks exactly like the one in the FAQ (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/example1.html). I can ping www.google.com from the firewall. But I cannot ping www.google.com from any computers on the internal network. First, does the pf.conf in the FAQ route DNS requests from the internal network? Second, if not would someone suggest a rule to accomplish that, so that DNS can be handled by my ISP? I've tried a couple of rdr/pass combinations. But no luck. Hell, I'm not even sure any rdr/pass combinations are requireddoesn't seem like it. Thanks and take care, Allen Tired of spam? Yahoo! My guy developed a working prototype, in less than a month (1 weeks spent getting specs, another week spent getting the java servlet engine working - this is back in the late 90s, another week developing the database schema) - actual coding time was less than a week. Our users loved it. Instead of consulting a bunch of books (govt paperwork) as tall as I was, and as wide as 10', they could have just used the browser, and get the results back in a split second. We just had to enter the data, ONCE. Mgmt put it on hold. Demoed to customer. Customer loved it. Instead of taking/buying our work, customer shopped that concept out. The new company took over a year to get the specs, could not deliver any working prototype, and had a $4.5mil contract. Best part of the story - customer (fortune 100 transportation company) bought us - so, effectively, they owned the source code. My total cost - $1k for an IDE that we later decided not to use. Man - like what they say - what we need is less corruption, or more chances to participate in it.

MAC -> IP -> MAC
Hello, good evening and welcome. I'm building a system that allows wireless clients to connect to an AP, authenticate themselves with a login and password, and they're then granted access to the internet, through a pf firewall using tables to control access. The clients are all assigned an address through DHCP (hopefully using dhcpd) so they should have an entry in dhcpd.leases for their MAC. When they authenticate, their MAC address is what is used to identify them, not their IP. I'm using a custom system to authenticate users, authpf is not really suitable here. Authenticated MACs are converted to an IP address, using dhcpd.leases to do the lookup. Then, as a double check, it will use the ARP cache to confirm that the IP and the MAC match up, so users can't steal access from a stale IP somewhere. If a user picks a static IP, they won't have an entry in dhcpd.leases, so they won't get access. What I'm looking for is a simple way to pull an IP/MAC combination out of a dhcpd.leases file, or a reasonably sized dhcpd.leases file that I can test a parser on. Can anybody help out here? Also, does this system sound reasonable or sensible? All comments welcome. Gaby -- Junkets for bunterish lickspittles since 1998! http://www.playr.co.uk/sudoku/ http://weblog.vanhegan.net/
Re: one drive in a raid 0 failed, can I save any data?
It turned out that I actually configured it as a raid 1 so I have a mirrored disk. I appreciate everyone's help and now I have options if I'm ever in the situation that I thought I was in. The best advice that I got was from Samuri Chef telling me to check out this software: http://www.data-recovery-software.net it turned out to be able to read ffs which was very nice. But when I went to use it, I found out that I had a raid 1. I remember having two 80 GB drives and my disk size was 160GB so I assumed that my raid was level zero. But it turned out that I never used the 80 GB drives and I actually had two 160GB drives. So, I made a big mistake and I'm definitely feeling much better now. Thank you to everyone for all your help and sorry for wasting your time. John

WOOHOO I figured it out. It was my root device. http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq8.html#Bootloader boot -a allowed me to chose a different root device. I didn't realize that was going on but after booting several times I realized there was a line that said root_device wd1a thanks to the FAQ maintainer! Hey did you hear that in Windows vista they implemented ASLR , somethink similar to the technology of random memory allocation in open bsd. So I gues Windows is copying bsd. Cool.
problems booting off wrong drive
I've got two drives in a OpenBSD 3.9 amd64 server. one that used to be the root drive in an old 3.8 system and a new drive that I've installed a fresh copy of OpenBSD 3.9. I want to boot up on just one of the drives but for some reason when I put the second drive in the server it tries to take over the root drive. I've tried switching the SATA cables between them and changing the boot option for boot hd0a:/bsd and hd1a:/bsd and I get the same errors. I attempted to find a way to make the secondary drive not bootable by booting up on my Official OpenBSD 3.9 CD and running a shell and then fdisking it, but I didn't find anywhere I could turn the bootable flag off. Any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks, John
Tape Changer ch(4) and Tape st(4) support changes - and hardware needed
A lot of work has been done by myself and krw@ at the hackathon to improve support for st(4) and ch(4) devices. In particular we have fixed up support for tape and changer devices so that opening a scsi tape device should be much more reliable (an open of the tape device should acutally mount the tape now) Additionally some work has been done to improve ch(4) and I have added bar code reader support to the kernel and to chio(8). These changes should be visible in new snapshots available soon. One problem with doing this work is a lack of changer devices. While I have access to a number of them at my day job, to ensure that fixes work and are compatible with several types of changers you really need access to more of these devices, as they have some interesting quirks. So, anyone with a working tape changer *with media* who wants to find it a good home, please contact me. Particularly if it has a barcode reader. I'm sure either myself or krw could put it to good use. -Bob

Support Needed for GPS and Time Signal Station Receiver Development
as you may know, I have added support for time signal station receivers earlier this year and during the calgary hackathon I added suport for NMEA talking GPS devices. these devices can now be used by our ntpd. unfortunately, most devices are slightly different in the data they return or the formats they use. so it is important for me to get as much such devices as ever possible to add support for them. for economic reasons, I can not buy every single device I come across, so I much depend on donations. if you are able to help me with my efforts by donating such devices or paying for them, please get in contact with me by private email. what I am looking for most are the following items: - GPS devices, serially and UPS attached (consumer grade) - industrial GPS devices, providing hich accuracy - GPS devices that can provide a proper per-second pulse - PCI based GPS receivers - GPS modules - receiver for the British MSF time signal station (Rugby) - High-precision correlation receiver for the german DCF77 station - Loran-C receiver - PCI based time signal station receivers thank you, marc balmer

Re: mounting winxp
hello, i just asked the very same question about a week ago on this list. just search the archive. ntfs is not enabled by default. you will need to compile the OS yourself to enable it. a hint, before changing fstab, try to mount a filesystem manually. konstantin 2006/6/2, Martin Gruden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > > Hi > > I have a noob question. > I have two disks wd0 and wd1 . Shane J Pearson wrote: What I did in that case, was image with Ghost and when the drive spins-down, pull the power plug on the drive alone, then plug it back in to get a few more minutes of copying. Keep doing that until the whole drive is imaged. Thankfully, this worked perfectly for me. Another thing I have seen successfully done when a drive would not spin-up at all, was a PCB swap from an exact same drive (model/firmware). If you try this, image the drive and then restore to another disk. Since when I saw this done, the newly fixed drive with different PCB died only days later in the same way. As if something inside the drive killed something on the outer PCB. I have done both of these things in the past, when desperate, with some success. I've also sent a super-critical drive out to drivesavers (I think it was them) and they saved it, but it was mucho $. It all depends on how much you need it. Also, look into RAID _5_ in the future. And a final note of wisdom -- SMART monitoring is your friend. Use it. Check it weekly on every system you own. I saved a lot of hassle when one drive in my (Linux) file server's RAID 5 told me one day "Failure Imminent". I overnighted the exact same model ans swapped it out the next day, preventing a lot of headache. Use google... ez-ipupdate or ddclient _OR_ this script makes use of nslookup, lynx, and dyndnsupdate. #!/bin/sh # This script uses "dyndnsupdate" available at http://www.bebits.com/app/2927 # HOSTNAME is your DynDNS hostname HOSTNAME=your_hostname.dyndns.org # NSLOOKUP is the current DNS entry for your DynDNS hostname NSLOOKUP=`/usr/bin/nslookup -sil $HOSTNAME | tail -2 | head -1 | cut -d" " -f2` # CURRENT_IP is your router's current IP CURRENT_IP=`/usr/bin/lynx -dump http://www.netins.net/dialup/tools/my_ip.shtml | grep -A2 "Your current IP Address is:" | tail -n1 | tr -d ' '` # Is CURRENT_IP returning "unknown"? if [ "$CURRENT_IP" = "unknown" ] ; then exit fi # Is our current IP in the DynDNS DNS records? If not, update them. if [ "$NSLOOKUP" != "$CURRENT_IP" ] ; then /sbin/dyndnsupdate -a $CURRENT_IP -h your_hostname.dyndns.org -m \ your_hostname's_mail_exchange.dyndns.org -s statdns \ -u dyndns.org_username:dyndns.org_password # Flush local DNS cache of $HOSTNAME /sbin/service named restart fi Take a look at the first two before using this script. -- Tasos Varoudis | [EMAIL PROTECTED] / rm '_XX' Architecture Engineer | http://www.daemons.gr/ phone: +3-210-9949406 | 23 Mixalakopoulou str, Argiroupoli mobile: +3-694-4663268 | 16451, Athens, GREECE

DDCLIENT works well for me on 3.7 riwanlky wrote: Hi, I will like to know if OpenBSD have the capability to update my dynamic ip to www.dyndns.org. However, there are many programs/scripts available which will work. The dyndns web site has a list of available ones for various platforms. -- Darrin Chandler| Phoenix BSD Users Group [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://bsd.phoenix.az.us/ http://www.stilyagin.com/ |

You'll see it mentioned in dyndns's documentation about automatic updates.
Re: dynamic dns update
You can use ddclient to update your dynamic dns. I've used it, it works well. dynamic dns update
Hi, I will like to know if OpenBSD have the capability to update my dynamic ip to www.dyndns.org. I am currently running myDYNIPPRO on Windows to update my dynamic ip. I want to move to OpenBSD. I had currently running sendmail, popa3d, mrtg, mySQL on the machine. Thanks and best regards, Riwan

sendmail causing high load
Hi all, My isp blocks traffic on port 25. So i decided to experiment on adding a listening port for sendmail. I added port 53, because this is never blocked. I added the following line in sendmail.cf: OOPort=53. I killed -1 sendmail. And then all my connections timed out. Ping gives a 80% loss. Are there that many wild dns requests? The box doesn't run his own dns-server, nor is it registered as one. I'm running OpenBSD 3.7 on this one. Any thoughts? Kind regards, Jasper
Last call for swedes wanting to attend the fundraiser event.
http://slackathon2006.unix.se for info (in swedish), attach /index_en.html for an (almost 100% updated) english version. It's tomorrow (3rd of June) at the Stockholm University, so this really is the last call, but in case I missed some of you swedes when spamming all local lists and forums, and you have the day off tomorrow, come by and donate! We'll play with trunk(4)ed Gbit-interfaces, hear Niklas Hallqvist, Artur Grabowski, Hans Insulander and others talk about OpenBSD and networking/security stuff in general, and generally have a nice social event. Since there are no/few good events where you can meet openbsd people in .se, this is your chance! See you (and your cash) there! /Janne
Re: one drive in a raid 0 failed, can I save any data?
Hi John, On 2006.06.02, at 1:57 AM, John Brahy wrote: For a couple weeks I was running without backups and one of the drives died. Is there a way to recover any of the data from the drives? How dead is the drive and how desperate are you? I have imaged a clients ide drive which was doing the "spin-up and keep spinning for a few minutes and then spin-down", thing. The slow disk death where you get excited about copying your data, then it dies mid-copy, you try lots of times to copy, it does the same thing each time and then the drive eventually never spins up again. What I did in that case, was image with Ghost and when the drive spins-down, pull the power plug on the drive alone, then plug it back in to get a few more minutes of copying. Keep doing that until the whole drive is imaged. Thankfully, this worked perfectly for me. I only mention Ghost because I have only tried this with Ghost and Ghost did actually tolerate this abuse and patiently waited for the drive to become responsive again and then continued. I don't know if this would work with other imaging type software. Seems scary, so I suppose if you want to try this you should do it on an expendable PC or perhaps an external enclosure. Ghost has a "forensic" option where it copies all data regardless of partition types and file-systems, which you'll need in this case since Ghost knows nothing about FFS and even if it did, it's striped. If you manage to get a full image, get an exact same drive and restore the image to it, then you might get lucky. Another thing I have seen successfully done when a drive would not spin-up at all, was a PCB swap from an exact same drive (model/ firmware). If you try this, image the drive and then restore to another disk. Since when I saw this done, the newly fixed drive with different PCB died only days later in the same way. As if something inside the drive killed something on the outer PCB. Good luck, I hope you have some option. Shane

here is the relevant portion of dmesg that is output when i plug in the modem: uaudio0 at uhub1 port 2 configuration 1 interface 2: Motorola, Inc.
