Questions of the type

"Are you working on a new edition of your book about ?"

or the more general

"Are you working on a book about ?"

or even

"When is your next book coming out?"

are never going to be answered truthfully, or at all, by any writer or
publisher unless a definite publication date has been set and they are
confident that all the myriad factors that determine the outcome of
the project are firmly under control.

If the real question is,

"Would it be safe for me to start writing a PF book?"

My answer is no. There is no guarantee that the effort you put in will
give satisfactory-to-you returns in any form or fashion. Writing is a
time sink and publishers may or may not be interested.

On the other hand if you are asking,

"Should I start writing a book on PF or a related subject?",

my take is, please do, if you feel that it is a thing worth doing.

But again, keep in mind that writing a book and getting it published
will eat up several significantly more than bite-sized chunks of your
time, but if you feel that your book needs to be written, please go
ahead.

The reason The Book of PF exists is that I had a general idea of what
kind of PF book I would like to see existing, and a work in progress
manuscript existed that I showed to anyone interested. Fortunately
enough people relevant to getting the book actually published (and
revised twice so far) agreed that this book needed to happen.

When I get to the point that a new edition of The Book of PF or any
other book relevant to OpenBSD that I am able to write is certain to
be published at a specific time, this mailing list will be one of the
first public forums that will receive notification.

That much I will promise.

All the best,
Peter

Bah! Not a chance.

If by some bizarre failure of natural law that should happen, I'll be
compelled to write an OpenBSD book next year to auction off. Just so
MY next auction can CRUSH HANSTEEN'S ABSURD FLUKE OF LUCK AND RESTORE
THE NATURAL ORDER.

I mean, the footnotes in BoPF3 all contain actual *facts* -- how lame
is that?

On OpenBSD 5.6 release day, auction status after one week is this (see
[1] for details):

A total of 20 bids, with the current high bid at US $1,009.99.

The amount is certainly in the comfortable zone for me, and with three
days to go it's entirely possible that this auction will indeed bring
in more money than Michael Lucas' Absolute OpenBSD, 2nd edition
auction[2].

If that happens I'll be very pleased, but regardless of the final
amount I hope the successful bidder will allow me to publish their
name and that the unsuccessful bidders will make direct donations to
the OpenBSD Foundation equal to or larger than the amount of their
highest bid.

One other point worth considering is that with both Michael Lucas and
me setting up these auctions, we have essentially created a new rule:
If you write an OpenBSD book, you are morally obliged to auction off
the first signed copy for the benefit of the project. That should not
be seen as a barrier to entry, rather the opposite.

Now enjoy the weekend and the newly arrived OpenBSD 5.6 release, I'll
be back with useful updates as soon as I have them.

It is just BARELY possible that Mr. Hansteen's work will raise more
money than mine. If so, it will clearly be the result of nepotism,
collusion, and intrigue.

If this happens, I'll have to write another OpenBSD book. One that

Re: The Book of PF, 3rd ed: You own the first author signed copy and support OpenBSD!

2014-10-25 Thread Peter N. M. Hansteen
In addition to a missing 'can' in the subject, there is a problem that
the auction as outlined at first is in fact not feasible.

But I'm working to fix that; for some weird reason setting up an ebay
auction for this item was not straighforward, as you can glean from
the updated blog entry (which also will by now show that the book has
been signed, with two blanks to be filled at a future date).

Some form of auction of that copy of the book where the proceeds will
be forwarded to the foundation in full will go forward, but the exact
how and when is still to be worked out. I will update as soon as I
have useful information on this.

In the meantime, if you want to donate, please go ahead. Donating will
however not influence your chance of owning the first signed copy of
The Book of PF, 3rd edition

All the best,
Peter

Pleased you're flattered ;)

Found the last one to be really helpful and an enjoyable read when I was
first getting into OpenBSD.

HFSC is a complex algorthm and it took a *lot* of trail and error to

Keep up the good work :)

Well, some of us with the first two editions of the book of PF are
hoping to see a pecuniary advantage here. We're hoping that, as
they fade into the past, early editions will appreciate massively
in value. Much as early CD releases of OpenBSD have. At least

I checked yesterday with No Starch, and the company says "it should ship
in early January."

Mine's pre-ordered; looking forward to reading it.

"The Book of PF" exists, physical copies documented

2007-12-19 Thread Peter N. M. Hansteen
Dear friends,

I have just taken delivery of my box of /The Book of PF/[1] author's
copies, and I'm finding I'm a bit at a loss for words when it comes to
describing the feeling. The thing exists. And it feels great to
finally see the thing for real. (OK, I cheated a bit and had five
copies printed locally for OpenCON[2], but these are the real ones,
slightly different binding)

We didn't manage to release the book the same date as OpenBSD 4.2
(yes, that was the original plan), but the thing has been written,
printed and should be on its way to all those who preordred as well as
to better bookshops everywhere. I'm not directly involved in
distribution and can not make any guarantees about when you'll get
yours (a slightly more experienced author has written an explanation
of that[3] - only this one was printed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA),
but even if it's late for the holidays I hope you'll enjoy your copy
and find the book useful.

Now of course the usual factors interfered even with the author
copies. There is a thing about courier companies and 18th century
buildings. Even faced with a relatively small one such as the one I
live in, DHL managed to make two attempts at delivery at the disused
entrance clearly marked 'deliveries at the other door please', so the
delivery finally happened at my office - also located in a 18th
century building, but at least one where the DHL people have been
before. But it finally arrived and life's good :)

One interesting factoid (fsvo) is that this happened within hours of
the twenty-five thousandth unique visitor (since EuroBSDCon 2006 that
is) hitting the book's predecessor, the online PF tutorial[4].

So happy hacking holidays everyone,
