Most people are way off base when they say a band is selling out. But I
think it would be a fun contest to come up with a list of the most
sell-out bands of all time. My vote would have to go for Metallica. I
mean
they were a great coked out metal band, at the fore front of that genre,
and then out of no where, they become ALTERNATIVE. Yuck. The Get Up Kids
are fun and all but I wouldn't say they are sell-outs. There music has
never changed much, maybe gotten tighter. I like their music but that
video is aweful.

On the live band tip, the first shows that come to mind are My Life With The
Thrill Kill Kult and Faith No More, both in the early or mid nineties. Those
first few real shows that you see in highschool almost become legendary in
your head. The first time I saw modest mouse they kicked booty the second

2000-03-07 Thread zero1259

Oh yeah! almost forgot,

another band that did this without "selling out" is Pavement!

To me selling out is when a band quits making music for themselves and
makes it for either their fans, record company, critics, nookie, or just
plain out to make money.

I for one am all for bands getting appreciated for their talents and
getting paid and laid. Such bands who did this without selling out are
(again to me) Nirvana, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Pantera (metal bands
are good at this besides metallica), and such. This is why I plan to
support MM all the fucking way when they go big..'cause we
all know they will.

not to be an ass about it, but if we skip buying gas from april 7-9, wont we
just end up buying it on the tenth? What i mean is that, i think its going
to have to be our voices rather than our actions that lower gas prices,
these oil barrons are going to get our money no matter what. The only thing
that is gonna change is what day they get it on.

um, I saw that show. I think your confusing that whole conversation where

2000-03-07 Thread jacqueline.

Lord, if i hear of one more person that labels the get
up kids "sell outs", i'll just shoot myself. They are
an amazing band, they are going to get big. And what
exactly are they "selling out" to? Did they promise
all the kids that watched them play in basements back
in the day that some day they would reject mtv if they
had the chance, or tell people not to like them if
they became unbelievably popular? Too many people try
to break bands down with the "sell out" shit. I don't
know what there reasoning is.. maybe it's that they
fear that the band will become far from there "awesome
secret" that few people know about, or they won't get
to see them for 8 bucks anymore... but whatever, be
happy for them. As for the albums though, i do like
their older stuff better, but they are still good.
Anyway, to finish they most likely worked really
hard to get where they are. So just try not be as
concerned.

yeah..cause the last one did so much. I'm all for fighting the power, and
what not, but market demand pressures will eventually force the oil prices
back down to reasonable levels, a gas strike will not. As long as one
geographic portion of world controls so much of such a precious recourse,
fluxuations like this are inevitable. If you want to have any kind of
impact on market forces, stop using gas, don't stop buying it in spits and
spurts, you just end up looking silly.

so i didn't bother to hear them, until the last two songs of their set. .
.and it still stands as one of the greatest show experiences of all time.
modest mouse left after three songs, so that wasn't very exciting.

jawbox, opening for stone temple pilots at the gorge in washington. . . a
transforming experience.

modest mouse, fighting hecklers from the stage, opening for i fergit? and gas

even as the rest of the crowd was flipping them off. viva la punk rock or

120 mins isnt that bad, promise ring was on there as well, and they
sometimes play a refused video here or there. so what im saying is maybe you
shouldnt equate 120 mins with selling out. Get Up Kids are indeed getting
rather popular, but no more than your pavements or your built to spills. if
they get more poppy, so be it. Plus with their growing popularity they are
doing some damn good things on the side, Heroes and Villians (their label)
has put out some good music in the past couple months, i cant seem to get
anniversary out of my stereo or my head. so there is my argument supporting
the GUK. Now here is the one thing i must complain about -When the played
here in philly earlier in the year they rolled up to the First Unitarian
Church in a grand ole tour bus. Most bands on major labels dont have tour
buses, whats up with that?

Yes, Modest Mouse is blatantly influenced by the
Pixies, lyrics as well as music composition. It was
really good to hear someone mention The Feelings.
Great band, similar at times I guess, but a completely
different level of appreciation. As far as other bands
that sound like Modest Mouse, there are going to be
the ones that you'll hear very often like Red Stars
Theory, 764-HERO, Built to Spill, Pavement... and
thats what comes to me quickly. I'm sure others will
respond to this with a more extensive list.
