2000-09-26 Thread LDierck

i am a person who loves generalizations... i love making them, and even
better, i love it when other people make them too... so i'll readily admit
(for the millionth time) that i am a hypocrite, just like everyone else. but
i do like the assumption that modest mouse listeners, and more specifically
those on the list, should be more intelligent than they have demonstrated.
first off, i would like to believe that i am a pretty intelligent person...
there aren't too many people on this list that i actually keep in contact
with, but i think that they would honestly say that i am a bright young
woman... however my posts are laden with swearing and duragatory
statements... because my emails read as such, does that actually make me a
person that knows nothing but how to swear and fast forward a good lesbian
porn flick to the good parts? i'd like to think not... there are times that
the content in the posts makes me want to start beating little children
because it sucks so bad... maybe it's the people writing it, maybe it's just
the topic, maybe it's both... but because people don't write something that
others think is profound and laden with meaning (both implicit and explicit),
that they are retards that jerk off in public... secondly, just because
someone likes a band, doesn't mean that what the band is or seems to
represent is what the person is like or stands for... i have witnessed the
drinking habits of the mouse however, i myself am someone who does not
drink... yet, i can interpret the music the way that i like, just like others
interpret the meanings of the individual songs themselves... i bet there are
about 3 people who are mouse listeners that are real cowboys and drink and go
to reservations, but we can all enjoy cowboy dan on some other level...
something tells me that issac brock, jeremy green, and eric judy don't talk
on the phone saying that they must make sure that their next grouping of
songs appeals to those that are intelligent, are famililar with alocohol and
desperation and indie as fuck... i believe that, like most artists, that they
hope their music (or other artlike product) appeals to everyone... i think
that everyone on this list will admit that it is 98% drivel, and i would say
that less than 25% of the people on the list are responsible for it... so
lets make a couple of assumptions from that... the stupid ones are the
bravest and they are the ones that will give their views more readily than
the others... or perhaps, this is as good as it gets... maybe the rest of the
list is a bunch of hicks that accidently signed up to this, but really meant
to sign on to a list where people traded beaver shots of their first
cousins... i am sure that there are people who listen to the mouse that are
total cock rock shitheads. it is wrong to assume that everyone on this list,
or everyone that listens to modest mouse at that, is so indie that they even
buy their underwear at thrift stores. the truth of the matter is i like to
swear, i like to shower, i like not drinking, i like buying nice new
underwear, i like mindless activities such as watching mtv and soap operas
(on occasion), i like finding new clothes that make my ass look good, i like
laughing at and making horrible jokes... perhaps issac or eric or jeremy
likes the same thnigs i do... because i would like to know that my bizarre
indie rock hero(es) go to the army navy store and tries on carhartts on one
leg at a time... and then slowly turns around to look and see just how
awesome his ass looks in those crisp new pantalones... don't break my hearts
you pretty ones!

I didn't mind the place that much... TLA is a better location for them, I
think. The huge assortment of songs really compensated for the weather and
drippy ceiling. The parking had me a bit worried, I think some day I should
get an orange vest and charge 10 bucks to let people illegally park in
random lots.

Oh, Is it just me or is Isaac cleaning himself up? He seems much better
behaved now... he drank less, sweated less, rolled around on the floor
less... he even was dressed well. Not sure if it's due to money or just the
fact that he's getting older.

Ok so now some real content, you guys know that poster they are selling at

[MMouse]: IRVING PLAZA FUN

2000-09-23 Thread Bagel808

So
What to say about last night's show?

Well I did get to meet Isaac. Yeah. It was as cool as one would think. He
is such a nice guy. I had met a girl and her younger sister and the last
modest mouse show in NYC at the Bowery who were very nice and we all sang
Neutral Milk Hotel with eachother between bands. Well this girl, Patti, is
without any doubt in my, their biggest fan. She has seen them 30 + times.
So in the time between the two shows she had become good friends the with the
band.
So I am on the line outside and I see her younger sister walking by on
cructhes and I recognize and she says hi and tells me that she got in an
accident two days after she got her license. Ouch.
Moving up three hours to when modest mouse where about to come, I'm at the
very front and all of a sudden someone taps my shoulder and pokes my nose and
it is none other than patti herself. Apparently, her sister had told her
that I was there and she went looking for me. She tells me that she saw them
in seatlle, eugene, all over the place. And that she is now friends with
Isaac. So the show goes on and rocks me like no other and then sadly ends.
Patti says goodbye and goes upstairs to find her sister and I go buy some
merchandise. While on that line, Isaac walks by and asks anyone if they have
seen Patti. Well of course my friend that she has and I say that she went
upstairs to find her sister. So then we go upstairs to say goodbye to her
sister and isaac comes over and starts talking to patti and she introduces me
to him. He said that he thought my hair was blond downstairs. Ha.

THE SHOW ITSELF
The bands rocked. All of them.

The crowd FUCKING sucked. Now of course this is not for every single person
who was there but all the people I was around were less than fun. Two people
cheered when the shins said they had only one more song, two (i think 12 year
old) girls behind us kept trying to sneak through us and get closer, some guy
grabbed my friend's hair for absolutely no reason, and the moshers. yes
MOSHERS. There is nothing wrong with moshing in my mind, its fine in the
correct context, not during all nite diner. I had thought that moshing was a
way to get out aggressions, hence the songs to mosh to needed some kind of
aggresssive content or feel to it, and all nite diner does not to seem to fit
that bill. Of course they moshed to nearly every song, and kept on bumping
into me. There were 4 people by us who were nice and polite and thats all.
Damed NYC crowd.

There were ticket scalpers, too. That struck me funny. And a really long
line to get in. I saw them in May and I got there late and walked in, and no
one was there. Very strange contrast to last night.

All in all, a night of good music is a good night.

Hey, I remember reading this once but never had anyone try it..

Put warped record under a heavy piece of glass and put it out in
the sun for a well.. theoretically the sun heats it and the glass
presses it flat. Vinyl theorists would say that records always going to
be fucked, but I say go for it. Go all out, some folks might even say yo
 surely black, your buggin' out.

btw, complain about warped vinyl. It's bullshit. I sent a nasty email
to Grand Royal because the last 3 records I got from them were
warped in some way.. I really wanted At Home with the Groove Box
on Vinyl but it was warped too so I took it back to the record store
and emailed grand royal. They seemed concerened. Who knows,
maybe they will make changes. There problems were the jackets
were too tight for the records.. in the process of shipping and all it
slowly warps the record out of shape..

other things that work:

if you have a wood stove, put a thin book on top of the stove, then the
record, and a heavy book on top.
let stand for about twenty minutes.
the heat should be enough to warp the record back, but not melt it.

if you don't have a wood stove, this might work on top of an actual stove,
while you cook turkey or something in the oven.

good luck.

2000-09-22 Thread kenneld

hey, you need to understand where i'm coming from; maine. i'm in fucking
maine. it's hard enough driving to boston for every concert i want to see,
so when the one concert i want to see more than any other is in providence,
i get a little frustrated. i like lupo's... i saw my favorite concert ever
there a few years ago, but coming out of a concert and then having a 3+ hour
drive ahead of you is a little depressing.

plus boston is a lot more fun to visit than providence.

as for more bands skipping boston in favor of providence; that won't and
shouldn't happen. the show at lupos didn't even sell out, while the one in
boston at the middle-east earlier this year sold out nearly a month before
the fact.

[MMouse]: Modest Mouse in Soundtrack

The two movies with MM in the soundtrack are:

1. Tail Lights Fade- (good movie)
2. Crime & Punishment in Suburbia- (in select cities
   September 20, 2000)

Has anyone seen C&P in Suburbia? I haven't. I saw
"Almost Famous" a few nights ago. Although MM was not
in the soundtrack, it did rock and roll.

still at work at 315p on a Friday afternoon,

go into your main email properties, there should be a filter tab or a block
tab somewhere, and if there is, add the girl who's making you lose hope in
the future generation's email to the list of addresses to be blocked and/or
filtered.
by the way, the youngest girl on here is probably 14 or 15 (jessibean if
i'm not mistaken) and i'm 16, so there a few youngins on here that are half
your age and who may not impress you as a 30 year old. it comes with the
territory of being on a mailing list for a band.

[MMouse]: Providence RI: The Full Treatment

2000-09-22 Thread kenneld

here's my thoughts on the show last night, in case anyone's interested.

first of all, i hope modest mouse never plays in providence again (according
to isaac, it was the first time they'd ever been there), unless they preceed
it or follow it up with a boston show. i think there were about 3 people
there who were actually from RI, while the rest seemed to be from boston and
the surrounding area. i saw pretty much every person i nornmally see at
boston shows anyways. lupo's is a cool place though, so whatever... i'll do
what i have to to see modest mouse.

so the doors opened @ 8:00 and i got to lupo's around 7:15. there was
already a good sized crowd waiting outside, including these two dicks who
were running around screaming at the tops of their lungs, trying to impress
everyone. if either of those two are on this list: i hope you get the living
shit beat out of you someday. i heard a couple people in line saying that
they were on this list, but felt too dorky about it to approach anyone they
thought might also be on here. oh well, i feel the same way.

doors opened and i got a place right up front. they had this really weird
music playing through the club's sound system; like this four-on-the-floor
dance beat that never went anywhere. around 9:00, the shins came out and
started playing right away. the first song they played was cool, but then
they just played it again like 7 more times, so it got pretty boring. next
up was 764-HERO, who i had never seen or heard before. they were okay, but
pretty run-of-the-mill. the singer looked very similar to isaac, which was
weird.

764-HERO exits and the mice start setting up. isaac was setting up his
peddles and noticed the weird music; "i keep waiting for the song to start".
i was pretty impressed with how quick they set up and started. not much more
than 10-15 minutes between 764-HERO stopping and Modest Mouse starting. they
opened with 3rd planted. not much to it, but still cool. trucker's atlas was
next. i really was hoping they wouldn't play that because i knew it was a
long song in the vein of cowboy dan or doing the cockroach, and i don't like
it. it wasn't too bad though. i don't remember the order of the rest of the
songs, but they included:

dark center of the universe - not as good as i hoped it would be live, but
still good. the huge booming drum during the openeing ("
might...") was really cool.

alone down there - same deal; not as intense as i hoped it would be, and
really short.

lives - i like this song alot, but live it sucked. isaac is a good guitarist
and all, but even he can't make a guitar properly emulate a string section.
it just sounded like a mess. you couldn't hear any melody.

teeth like god's shoeshine - i really wanted to hear this, so i was psyched
when they did. it was really good, except that they didn't do the part after
the second "here's the man with teeth like god's shoeshine". the part where
there's a pause, like the song's ending but then it does a "DUMM DUMM DUMM
DUMM" and launches back into the heavy part. i was all ready to go nuts at
that part, but when it just ended on the soft part... no climax. it was
kinda like your mom walking in on you while you're masturbasting, if you
know what i mean.

the waydown - this is such a weak song, and it's no better live.

doin the cockroach/cowboy dan - these seemed a little shorter than they were
at the last show i was at. not quite as epic, but still good. alot more
pickup screaming than before.

trailer trash - i'll never tire of hearing this song live. it's not the
best, but it's timeless and always fun to sing along to.

- encore -

all nite diner - i wanted nothing more than for therm to play this live, so
when they started, i just couldn't stop grinning. it was just fucking
awesome.

tiny cities made of ash - i had no desire to hear this, my least favorite
song on the new album, but it turned out to be the high point of the show. i
mean, it just fucked shit up. it was so goddamn good, and being the last
song, left me with a really good impression of the show.

isaac seemed to be in a good mood. he was pretty chatty. he kept going on
about how weird providence is. apparently it was the first time he'd ever
been there at all in his life, and he kept saying it's a "witch town",
whatever the fuck that means. he was saying some other pointless stuff about
people in the audience, but i couldn't understand him.

so that's it. a great show. not as much fun as the boston show earlier this
year, but only because that was my first mm show, so it was such a thrill.
and i didn't have a hot girl hanging on me at this show, like i unexplicably
did at the boston one.

here's the major problem though; modest mouse really needs to work on their
setlists. too little variety, and too much reliance on a couple old songs. i
mean, for two shows, five months apart, the setlists were 75% the same. they
have so many songs that would be awesome live, but they never play them. i
mean, jus

I taped the show but I couldn't eliminate all the distortion, it sounds
pretty good though. Unfortunately there were two little girls whose mom
probably dropped them off for their first show) who wanted to make sure that
everyone there knew they knew ALL the words to every song. So you can hear
them at times on the recording. It actually sounds pretty hilarious. Two
girls SCREAMING the words to "broke" in a distinct massachusetts accent. I
laughed my ass off.

i will transmit the set list for the 9/21/00 show in RI for posterity,

Here today, gone tomorrow. Once people wake up and realize that hype, for
all intents and purposes, is just that - hype. Like when MI:2 came out this
summer, it was the top movie in the box office. Why? Hype. But will
anyone buy that piece of shit when it comes out to DVD? Only inbreds.

Like my man Flava Flave once said, "Don't...don't believe the hype!"

Some fun little Pitchfork insider info for all y'all

So, Ryan, the guy who runs Pitchfork, was asking all of us writers what we
thought of the new Radiohead, and I told him straight up that I wasn't very
impressed by it...

Interestingly enough, I was the only Pitchfork writer out of ten surveyed who
didn't give the album a "10". I guess my taste sucks...

a part of me up there that i didn't take with me here and i need to go back
and reclaim. check out http://www.visi.com/~sparks/bydate.html for a
complete list of stuff coming there. as for record stores, there's
northern star...i think that's the name, uhh..and a few other places :P
i'm more excited about seeing my crackwhore apartment where i grew up and
how after we left it completely turned to shit. hurray for south
