[MMouse]: bright eyes question
does anyone know the song by bright eyes about, umm... love? I don't know how describe it, except that it has the word love in it a lot. he's like "love is real..." and such. I know it only as "happy song" cause that's what his keyboard player refered to it as, but I don't know if that's the real title. anyways, I've seen them perform it a couple times and it's very pretty so I'm wondering if it's on an album or available for download anywhere. any help would be appreciated.
Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes
No, I'm being serious. Phil
Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes
i think people that can relate to the vocals and the music could just be depressive? cause the lead singer is. and i think that may be why i like it.
Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes
opinion is the perfect word choice. Wow, that's deep. I just meant that brilliant was a bad word choice. Passionate is a better one. Phil

[MMouse]: bright eyes
o.k. i've tried. really tried. kept an open mind all that. i would listen to random bright eyes songs and think, 'i do not like this stuff.' but then i would read reviews and come across recommendation after recommendation. people who love all the bands that i love would gush about bright eyes. so i tried more songs and i thought, 'i do not like this.' so when they played here in austin last night with grandaddy (who was great), i went. anxious to change my tune about the band, i watch them perform. the verdict is in. i don't like them. i don't understand. am i missing something? how do people who have an obvious appreciation of great music (esp. modest mouse) love bright eyes so? somebody, please explain the bright eyes phenomenon because i ain't getting it and i think i kinda want to or it wouldn't bug me so much that i don't. just out of curiosity, how old are you bright eyes fans? don't take this the wrong way, but i'm wondering if they appeal to a younger audience and if perhaps they're more about adolescent suffering. sadly, i'm more of an adult sufferer.
Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes
Hmmm... Well first off you were very very polite in your not understanding of bright eyes, especially when compared to some of the past arguements on this list, so you rock. I myself am a huge bright eyes fan, and am only 17. However, a lot of the bright eyes stuff I like is not the more adolescent-esque songs. I can't give a very definitive answer as to why I like bright eyes. I just really do. I like the lyrics, conor's voice, etc. I guess it's just a matter of opinon (duh.) :) mike .bagel.
Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes
I love Bright Eyes. (I'm 21, by the way) Putting into words everything I love about them seems almost impossible, but I'll try. I love all that emotion...Conor rocking back and forth while singing and almost falling off his chair, in tears? I think thats brilliant. Lots of bands seem to lack emotion and they just play their instruments because that's what they're used to doing. It's not that way with Bright Eyes, though. And for being 20, his songwriting is incredible. Shit, it's good no matter how old he is. Just think what he'll be able to write once he's older and more experienced (in life, not so much in music). Music is all about emotion for me, and Bright Eyes puts pure emotion on record better than almost anyone. Not to mention the music is quite fucking good. Five days till bright eyes in boston. anyone else going? haligh haligh, mer.
Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes
bright eyes' fanbase reminds me of some high schooler's fanatical obsession with _catcher in the rye_. must like most people dont really 'get' that book, track 11 on the new bright eyes cd would suggest the same about his music. im all for calling it not so much an age thing, just a 'present place in life' thing.
[MMouse]: bright eyes
I'm 26, and I also went to the show last night in Austin, and I thought they were fantastic. Everyone on this list kept going on and on about them, and I had never heard them, so I went to Waterloo and listened to one of the CDs (I never have money to buy them). What I heard was pretty good, but not earth shattering. I went to the show, b/c I usually like live stuff better anyway. I thought it was damn good, and I was disappointed they didn't play more (unless I missed the beginning, they only played 5 songs). I loved the flute! Grandaddy was good, but I wasn't nearly as impressed with them. I've never heard SDRE, either, but I've heard lots of good stuff about them, so I'm going tomorrow to the in-store at Waterloo, since the show at La Zona Rosa is $13. I have a hard time paying that much for a band I've never heard. So, that's my meaningless input... toni o.k. i've tried. really tried. kept an open mind all that. i would listen to random bright eyes songs and think, 'i do not like this stuff.' but then i would read reviews and come across recommendation after recommendation. people who love all the bands that i love would gush about bright eyes. so i tried more songs and i thought, 'i do not like this.' so when they played here in austin last night with grandaddy (who was great), i went. anxious to change my tune about the band, i watch them perform. the verdict is in. i don't like them. i don't understand. am i missing something? how do people who have an obvious appreciation of great music (esp. modest mouse) love bright eyes so? somebody, please explain the bright eyes phenomenon because i ain't getting it and i think i kinda want to or it wouldn't bug me so much that i don't. just out of curiosity, how old are you bright eyes fans? don't take this the wrong way, but i'm wondering if they appeal to a younger audience and if perhaps they're more about adolescent suffering. sadly, i'm more of an adult sufferer. Yes. I wasn't going to stick around for Grandaddy, but then I started feeling bad about leaving before the headliner played when I saw Bright Eyes @ TT's a while ago, so I've decided I will stay. In preparation for seeing them, I bought The Sophtware Slump and really like it, so now I'm twice as excited for that particular show. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, July 17, 2000 5:15 PM Subject: Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes I love Bright Eyes. That's ridiculous. I really don't think it's got anythign to do with age or "place in life." ya either like them or you don't. [MMouse]: bright eyes c.d. interview thing
okay see i "get" the interview and i still hate it...i think fevers and mirrors is an amazing album...its breathtaking..but that damned interview does not belong...maybe it would have fit in better on letting off the happiness considering that thats more of a collection of songs..not a really conceptual peice of work like fmor even on every day and every night it would have been better fitting. i still would not have liked it but it wouldnt have effected the overall quality of the c.d. like it did on fevers and mirrors. love andrew
Re: [MMouse]: bright eyes c.d. interview thing
well my point is, whether or not it affects the album, I just don't see how critics could think it was meant to be a serious interview. I guess it doesn't bother me as much cause I usually just skip the song that preceeds it anyways. RE: [MMouse]: bright eyes news/ modest mouse commentary
when you say big venues, are you talking arena's? I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt that modest mouse could sell out an arena. Their were shows on this current tour that haven't sold out until the day of the show (if at all). I could see them moving up to big venues on an indie-rock scale (Irving Plaza, The Filmore, etc...). seems like the next leg the mouse might be playing some reallly BIG venues.
RE: [MMouse]: bright eyes news/ modest mouse commentary
I don't think s/he was...they mentioned the electric factory, which though big (and easily the crappiest venue in philly) is not nearly arena size. It holds about two thousand(?) people, and I think modest mouse could bring enough people to make it worth their while, but only if they had some really good opening band, or opened for someone else. Personally, I think it would be pointless to go to a place like the electric factory to see the mouse...stand a hundred feet away with a warehouse full of annoying people and really shitty sound. And what, you say it'd only cost me thirty bucks!? Somehow, I think I'd be able to live with myself if I couldn't make it. [MMouse]: bright eyes news/ modest mouse commentary
i saw bright eyes last night at brownies and ohmygoodnesss it ranks right up there with the mouse as one of the best shows i've ever seen. either conor is the most nervous troubled boy alive [and if so my heart goes out to him] or he's got the knack for showmanship. either way i love it. bt i heard that there are problems with booking for the tour bright eyes was supposted to be going with herspaceholiday this july. soo sad huh. im hoping bright eyes with still play cmj this fall as rumored. anyone else have any inside info they can bring to the table? i keep pestered robb from saddle creek and i feel badly. in good news the faint will be on tour with the vue and camera obscura. that should be a really rad show for any of you kids diggin the new wave revival. now for modest content: im fairly sure they are doing another leg of the tour although dates and venues have yet to be confirmed. isaac sets up the shows himself and i heard he called the electric factory in philly about setting up a show. seems like the next leg the mouse might be playing some reallly BIG venues. while i think it'll be great to have shows where more people can go {maybe solving some of the desperate pleas for tickets and such} it'll be strange to see the mouse in huuge spaces. also the band is going to have to pay a lot bigger fees to rent out these spaces meaning ticket prices will probably go up quite a bit. the price you pay becoming popular i suppose... sunrise and sunset, sara

[MMouse]: Bright Eyes..... AGAIN
Ok ok ok, I know, its off topic, but i have a question here. Now, I dont know if this was what brought up the bright eyes discussion the first time, but I've been listening to the new album over and over and over and track 9 (The Center of the World) reminds me of the Mouse so much its scary. give it a listen, seriously. is this what started the conversation the first time? Every time i hear this album (Fevers and Mirrors) it keeps getting better and better. - Cameron

i saw bright eyes at lewis and clark, the night before they played at ej's. i got there late, but it was s good. the show started at nine, i got there at nine thirty and around nine fifty conner said something about how they never play that long. they were selling the new cd . . . it's really good, except there is this kind of psuedo-interview thing at the end of the album that is kind of stupid, kind of like "i used to walk around with a saftey pin and when no one was paying attention i would dig it into my arm until i started to cry" "so you liked attention?" "no, i hate it when people look at me, it makes me sick." i dunno, other than that, it is really good and i would recommend that everyone buy it. and see them if at all possible. adrian
[MMouse]: Bright Eyes
Yes, folks, I saw Bright Eyes too, at Bottom of the Hill in SF, and the way-too-short 45 minutes or so that they played absolutely blew me away. I've ordered the new thing from the saddle creek web site and I think everyone else should too. Funny, they were playing with this band called the Subtonix which were this lesbian chicks wearing trashbags, smeared with fake blood, playing casios and a sax and generally punked out in a post-John Hughes throwback kind of way. Then the headliner was the Need which is more weird chick performance art stuff. Bright Eyes, indie boys in ill fitting thrift store garb, heartbreakingly earnest, just didn't really fit the whole vibe. I was worried the Subtonix fans (also smeared with fake blood) were going to riot. Bottom line: Bright Eyes is incredible. --taylor

I took the recent slew of rec's on Bright Eyes to heart and am now the proud owner of the Every Day ep. Rockin' Other cd's I picked up for Christmas: Old 97s Too Far to Care Blonde Redhead s/t Luna Penthouse Fiona Apple When the Pawn Unwound A Single History Black Heart Procession ep Those and the Scribner's Best of the Fiction Workshops anthology; it's a compilation of the best of the best stories being written in graduate programs across the country and makes for more exciting reading than I've come across in a while. Not necessarily all brilliant, but all trying something new, and all refreshingly young feeling. Anyone read this? --Taylor
