Re: [MMouse]: best line

1999-07-11 Thread Jason Gintert

this is one of my favorite lines in any of modest mouse's discography too.
as far as the part "i don't feel at all like i fall" goes, i really can't
say what it means in a literal sense. i know it stikes a chord deep down
that makes perfect sense. i can't explain it. it's expression of a feeling
i can never find the words for.

everyone has their own interpretation of songs. that's fine because that's
the beauty of most poetry. here's my interpretation of custom concern. i
believe when he says "we're losing all touch losing all touch building a
desert" i think he is bringing us back to one of issacs favorite themes.
expansion of "civilized" society and all of the ills that follow. "we're
losing all touch..." is kind of how we all go about our days like machines
and most people never really communicate anymore. most people are becoming
automotons carrying out their daily tasks without love or passion for any of
it. that point also relates back to "gotta go to work, gotta go to work,
gotta have a job". ya gotta be part of the machine right? where are you if
you aren't according to most in american society? "...building a desert."
think about all the forrests and fields destroyed for parking lots and other
slabs of concrete that are flat and barren much like deserts. ahh progress.
i have seen it turn much of the woodland i would play in as a child into
strip malls. i agree strongly with alot of what issac has to say about such
things. wonder where all his wisdom comes from? always knows how to put
the words together just right.

i forgot about this. i wrote it in chalk on the side of a building once.
and then i figured out what it means to me.
first off. i think he says "i dont feel at all like i "thought""
so what it means to me is that you meet someone that you think you like.
a significant other or a good friend, whatever.
and then you realize that youre making a mistake.. that youre not onctent
with your decision to associate with this person in the manner that you
are currently associating.
so you dry up the land between you.. building a desert means you suck all
the livelihood out of the situation until nothing but vultures survive.
just my take

All of Karma's Payment, especially, "I went to La the next day, i got jacked
in a really bad way,"...because i know the story behind it.

The aforementioned parts of "Edit the sad Parts" and "Talkin' Shit"

"I think i know my geography pretty damn well"

Damn. i KNOW there's more. I hate being 2000 miles away from my CD
collection...

"wild packs of family dogs". the whole song.

"i'm on a road shaped like a figure 8, i'm going nowhere but i'm guaranteed
to be late" ... "you know that ball has no sides" - interstate 8

"they gave her a mirror so she could talk to a face" - space travel is boring

"take a drive in the wrong hand lane, got bad breath talking about fresh
rain" - the fruit that ate itself

those are the only ones i can remember of the top of my head. there are many
many more.

my favorites are:
(excuse me if i don't have the names of the songs, a song title
doesn't mean much to me)

"i know now what i knew then but i didn't know then what i know now"

"i was in heaven, i was in hell, believe in neither but fear them as well"

"opinions were like kittens i was giving them away"

"i'm not sure who i am, but i know who i've been"

"i don't feel and that feels fine"

"well i'll go to college and i'll learn some big words
and i'll talk real loud goddamned right i'll be heard
you'll remember the guy who said those big words
he must of learned in college"

that's all i got for now, my favorite songs are:(i love all of them but these have
a special meaning to me)
dramamine
trailer trash
whenever you see fit ( with 764-hero)
talkin' shit about a pretty sunset
bankrupt on selling
teeth like god's shoe shine

lets talk about something meaningful with respect to the band -- i am sure
this has been done on the list before -- favourite song lines -- verses
even -- lets let each other know what lines have affected and changed us
-- for me, the mouse is more than a band -- isaac's lyrics (for the most
part) really hit a spot for me -- i was wondering what lines people on
here liked i'll start with a few--

"well you spend most of your life lookin for the adult you are, and you
spend the rest of yoru life lookin for the child that you were" -- extra
lines from trailer trash, when played live

"talkin shit about a pretty sunset, blanketing opinions that i'll probably
regret soon -- i change my mind so much i cant even trust it, my mind
changed me so much i cant even trust myself" -- talkin shit...

"i'm tryin, i'm tryin to, drink away the part of the day that i cannot
sleep away" -- polar opposites

"you were the dull sound of sharp math when you were alive, and no ones
gonna play the harp when you die" -- one of the songs on the new EP

h
best lines from modest mouse

"cant make dirt cleaner so we'll just lemon scent it"

"this is the part of me that thinks outer space is all dead...
this is the part of me that wishes it was with it"

"sometimes all i really wanna feel is love, sometimes im angry that i feel
so angry, sometimes my feelings get in the way of what i really feel i
needed to say"

"i claim i'm not excited with my life anymore so i blame this town this
job these friends the truth is its myself"

"pick the receiver up, try to meet ends and find out the beginning the end
and the best of it"

"here things go from green to grey and then back to grey again"

eh.. thats all i can think of while at work. while i dont really like the
idea of just spurting out lines.. i cant really explain why all of these
mean something. but they do. and i think teeth like gods shoeshine is
often forgotten about.. but truly one of the best songs ever written.
