Do cookies get set if returned via an image?

If so, once the user has logged in, you could return a page with
invisible images on it, where each image is from each site that the user
needs to be authenticated to.

Each image is unimportant. The important bit is that an authentication
cookie is set for each domain the image is returned from.

This leaves one tricky point as far as I can see: you need to securely
identify which image request comes from each user. The obvious/easy way
would be to put some sort of unique identifier in the path or query
string, but this may not be secure enough for your purposes.

Oh yeah, it'd break if they didn't have images on. :-(

Check to make sure that you do not have some strange version of CGI 
in $LIBRERIAS_AT.  I've been bitten by this in the past when a 
developer pointed some code to his home directory and had bad/debug 
copied of modules in there.

Ummm yes... you know, I'm using the Template Toolkit. It seems as if the
httpd child executes the processing of the template so fast that CGI.pm has
no time to get the POST data. I has no sense, because the script, the first
thing it does is the $in=$query-Vars(), and the last thing it does is to
process a template. But it seems as if it could process the template before
getting the POST data. And that would explain why the POST data is mantained
in STDIN and then appears concatenated to the very next request: a .gif file
the template calls.
But I repeat, it has no sense the script processing the template before
reading the POST data :-?

I'm not using any cleanup handlers. Somebody suggested me to use one to
destroy CGI.pm data. But, the true is that the problem is CGI.pm I'll kick
CGI.pm away because I only use it to get the variables from a GET or POST
data.

Hmmm... Can I do it securely without using Kerberos? I think so. Looks like
if I use https instead of http, people won't be able to steal my (encoded)
session information as it is transmitted. And I can also add the IP address
to the cookie information.

But the cookies file might be readable by other people! If they can steal
that file and change the IP address of another machine to yours, they can
pretend they are you!
I wonder if there is a way out of this...

I don't think so.  It seems to me like your processes are getting corrupted
by some C code or an improperly shared file handle or socket.  I doubt this
has anything to do with CGI.pm, since so many people use it and don't report
having the same problem.

If you want to experiment, you could replace CGI.pm and see if it improves
thing for you.  There are plenty of other modules you can use to parse POST
data.

Yes, you use the timestamp.  Just reauthenticate the user when they
try to do 'sensitive' activities.

For example you might allow someone to view their bank balance if they
typed their password within the last 2 hours.  Transferring money
might require a valid password within the last 10 minutes..

Of course, the best authentication system for banking I've seen is
from UBS.  They send you a scratchlist of around 100 numbers.  Every
time you login you use one of the numbers and cross it off.  Very
slick.

Thank you for your advice. But that's not my case. in $LIBRERIAS_AT I only
have Idioma.pm OrdenesComunes.pm and other modules of my own.

Well all my modules are written in Perl. When you say some C code you mean
the C code in DBI, or CGI or Template, don't you?
I know many people uses CGI.pm but not so many with Template Toolkit and
mod_perl...

 server. The transition token then is used to transfer them to the requested
 server, which based on the token, does a lookup on the authentication server
 to find out if its a valid transition token, and if so, generates a new
 cookie for them (if necessary) and logs them into the site.


This assumes they dont just type in the url of the other site they want to visit
manually. It limits the user to visiting sites via links on sites they are
currently logged on to.

with mod_perl)
to overload or override its native authoentication and instead contact
a Host, Database or
LDAP to get the yes or no along with expiration data it then sends
its finding to the CGI
by sending additonal HTTP Header info. A CGI program can then go from
there...
I might not have this 100%, but perhaps we can learn from those commercial
products.
Someone suggested using LDAP and RDBMS, my question is why both, why
not just
RDBMS.

Now a user can go between the two applications without concern since
they have a cookie for each domain.

This allowed us to plug into existing applications without a lot of
rework. It is also fairly language/platform independent.
As stated above I know there are some large security issues with this
approach.

I wonder if one could change the HTTP Server's behavior to process a
distributed version of "AuthUserFile" and "AuthGroupFile".
That instead of
AuthUserFile "/some/secure/directory/.htpasswd
One would say
AuthUserFile "http://xyz.com/some/directory/htpasswd"
Then write a GUI (web) inteface to this password and group file and
you have distributed authentication system.

Something like this. Basically, it has modules, plugins, or access
instructions, as appropriate, for various web servers, to configure
them
to use it. I know it gives an LDAP interface, and I'm assuming
it gives
an LDAPS interface; I'm not sure what others it may present.

Why not just LDAP? As someone working on rolling out a single
sign-on
solution with LDAPS, I really want to know... (We're planning
on
getting Netegrity for its distributed administration stuff; at that
time, we'll start using its web server configuration stuff for any
new
web servers. Until that time, we're rolling out LDAPS, and we're
not
currently planning on converting systems we roll out in the interm
to
Netegrity.)
Incidentally, we're being a bunch of lazy bums, compared to the rest
of
y'all. We're considering single sign-on to mean they only need
to keep
track of one userid and password (unless they need to access classified
or otherwise restricted stuff.) If they go to different sites
and have
to log on again, we don't currently care. (Basically, we have
too many
sites created by too many groups. We'll share the same login
between
servers run by the same group, but beyond that, security concerns
outweigh user convinience.)

Does that really work in practice? That sounds really annoying. Is this for 
business banking or for retail? How do they get the next 100 numbers to the 
user? Do they mail it out when they've used 90?

It sounds like it would be less annoying to use certificates and some 
plug-in token there is going to be that much extra work to deal with a 
password sheet.

I hadn't really taken a look at personal certificates until this thread
came up.  It looks like thawte is offering personal certificates at no
charge.

This would make it a more likely method since lots of site
traffic wouldn't want to pay and people tyring out the service wouldn't
be forced to pay just to login.

When you say plug-in token are you talking about a browser plug-in?

 Does that really work in practice? That sounds really annoying. Is this for
 business banking or for retail? How do they get the next 100 numbers to the
 user? Do they mail it out when they've used 90?
 
 It sounds like it would be less annoying to use certificates and some
 plug-in token there is going to be that much extra work to deal with a
 password sheet.

PLOf course, the best authentication system for banking I've seen is
PLfrom UBS. They send you a scratchlist of around 100 numbers. Every
PLtime you login you use one of the numbers and cross it off. Very
PLslick.

The ACE SecurID system (I think they're owned by RSA now) refines this
process well. You have a hardy little credit-card sized (or key fob sized,
and I'm sure they have other form factors) object. It has a little LCD
screen and every 30 seconds the 4- to 6-digit number on it changes. When
you log into the server, you give it your ID, a password, AND the number
currently on your SecurID card or key fob.

The key fob is nice. It's hardy and lasts a long time. I have one from
Motorola from my stint there many years ago. You could probably toss it on
the sidewalk from my third-story balcony and it'd be okay, plus it's
small and easy to read.

This is inferior to a true zero-knowledge challenge-response system which
would require a little calculator, but it's far more secure than a
password and far easier to use than paper and pencil.
