Module submission Class:Aggregate

2003-01-27 Thread Perl Authors Upload Server

The following module was proposed for inclusion in the Module List:

  modid: Class:Aggregate
  DSLIP: bdpOg
description: Base class aggregating several OO aspects
  userid: CORLISS (Arthur Corliss)
  chapterid:6 (Data_Type_Utilities)
  communities:
mailinglists

  similar:
Class::Accessor, Class::Container, POE, etc.

  rationale:

Okay, this is the last time I'm going to bother you with this
request, I just haven't heard a response to my last rationale(s).

I'm choosing the name Class::Aggregate since this module aggregates
three class aspects, in contrast to most of the Class::* modules,
which concentrate on specific traits. This module provides
facilities for property accessors, containers, and rudimentary
events.

The reason why this exists as a separate module/code base is that
it chooses a different method of implementation than the existing
modules, and its feature focus is also different as well.

Syntactically, this module is meant to be used strictly as an
ancestor of a custom subclass. Properties are defined as an array of
write and read accessor method references, or a single unifed
accessor method (a generic accessor that can serve in any of these
capacities is provided as part of the class). The container property
is implemented with a focus on controlled destruction of contained
objects, rather than on a consistent interface.

The event system is based on psuedo boolean properties combined
into a state flag register. All accesses/modifications of a flag can
trigger execution of an optional associated event handler. This
system is much smaller and simpler to implement than POE, and,
accordingly, the dependencies are much smaller (read: nothing
outside of core Perl), as are the capabilities (using POE for what
this class intends is much akin to using a twenty pound sledge where
I only need a sixteen ounce ballpeen).

For these reasons, I hope to persuade you that this module deserves
a place on CPAN. Adding it to CPAN would also increase my code
reuse, since my other OO CPAN modules will be making use of this
code in the near future, and I'm hoping I won't have to include this
module within the namespace of each of those modules.

  enteredby: CORLISS (Arthur Corliss)
  enteredon: Tue Jan 28 01:10:25 2003 GMT

The resulting entry would be:

Module submission UML::Sequence

2003-01-27 Thread Perl Authors Upload Server

The following module was proposed for inclusion in the Module List:

  modid:   UML::Sequence
  DSLIP: adpOp
description: draws sequence diagrams by running the code
  userid: PHILCROW (Philip Crow)
  chapterid: 18 (Images_Pixmaps_Bitmaps)
  communities:
?

  similar:
?

  rationale:

There are probably several people who would like to build tools for
the production and manipulation of UML. I know I am one. There is
not a UML top level now. I think there should be. When my boss wants
UML, I don't want to have to use Visio to produce it. I don't even
want to produce it manually from the command line. Perl should do
this sort of thing for me.

There is another CPAN user TEEJAY who has a package he calls
AutoDia which draws other UML diagrams (class diagrams, etc.). So
far as I could tell from the docs, AutoDia does not draw sequence
diagrams. Further, it is not on CPAN.

The module I'm ready to submit (UML::Sequence) runs a perl program
of your choice under Devel::DProf and (together with other provided
scripts and UML::Sequence::* modules) generates an svg picture of
the sequence of calls which actually executed. You have control over
which functions appear in the output.

You can also produce a sequence diagram just by typing in an
outline of the calls.

If you're willing to write your own three function module, you can
generate your own sequences for other languages or input formats.
I've demonstrated this by writing the proper module for Java and
supplying a Java program to feed it (I wish the Java debugger
architecture had Perl hooks). This could be included in the
distribution if the CPAN maintainers wouldn't be too offended by the
presence of Java code on CPAN.

  enteredby: PHILCROW (Philip Crow)
  enteredon: Mon Jan 27 21:37:24 2003 GMT

The resulting entry would be:

I uploaded a new one just to fix this. I can't promise to keep from
tripping over this again, but I will try.

I should probably offer a patch to Parse::Yapp for fixing it long
term (by letting the grammar file specify the version number), so when I
get more time

  rationale:

QMTP is Dan Bernstein's Quick Mail Transfer Protocol which is a
replacement for SMTP. qmail/serialmail includes a C QMTP server and
client.

The 'Net' namespace was chosen as Net::QMTP is equivalent to
existing protocol interfaces, such as Net::SMTP, Net::FTP,
Net::POP3, etc.

BTW, QMTP is not QMPC, though they are both Dan Bernstein

Namespace question

2003-01-27 Thread M Hawkins

Hi,
I am writing a module to interface to the IBM LoadLeveler software.
LoadLeveler is used for "dynamic workload management" on large AIX servers
and MPP systems, very basically it is a batch scheduling system.

I would like a namespace of LoadLeveler, is this appropriate ?

Thanks for your time

WWW::Form is not particularly similar to HTML::Form.
HTML::Form parses HTML to build Perl representations
of HTML form data. WWW::Form does not parse raw HTML,
but rather, it takes a data structure that is used to
generate HTML form inputs. Stylistically, WWW::Form
is more similar to HTML::FormTemplate than HTML::Form.

> the web or HTTP do not have forms, but HTML does.

Right. I guess the motivation for calling the module
WWW::Form is because dealing with HTTP POST data and
HTML forms is a common piece of most web apps. So I
see it as fitting into a larger library that
encompasses web application development in general.
If you think a different namespace is preferable,
please let me know.

> how is your module different?

WWW::Form (and WWW::FieldValidator, the validation
component of WWW::Form) differs from other form
modules that are used to validate input and generate
HTML form inputs in that it uses a very small API for
form handling. A developer can handle most scenarios
involving HTML forms and processing HTTP POST data
with only 5 methods. WWW::Form makes it easy to
handle both simple and complex HTML forms and
validation requirements. WWW::Form is also designed
to be easily subclassed and extended.

In the spirit of TIMTWOTDI, I think WWW::Form and
WWW::FieldValidator provide developers with another
relevant choice for validating form data and
displaying HTML form content, i.e. error feedback,
form field labels, and HTML form inputs.
