2006-05-15 Thread JR

John,

Man, that's one fine assembly of artwork from the Richardson Studios...
thanks for putting it together and making it available to the public.
Richardson's best stuff is as distinctive as Reynold Brown or Amsel or anyone
else in the business and so uniquely evocative of an era. I hope this is going
to be a permanent exhibition on your site?

Many collectors have recently begun to appreciate the artwork
of The Richardson Studio founded by John Richardson in the early 20s (my
best guess is 1923). Their artwork was produced for Paramount films
through to 1960 and was always distintively unique. I have put together an
exhibition of Richardson Studio posters on my website. The majority of
these posters are not for sale and a number of the posters are the only
known copies to exist. Thanks to Bruce Hershenson and Grey Smith for some
of the images along with a few other collectors. If anyone has images of
Richardson Studio posters that are not on my site please email images and

2006-05-15 Thread JOHN REID Vintage Movie Memorabilia

Thanks JR
I will certainly keep it going on my site and add
to it when time permits. It has been quite a bit of work in getting it all
together but I really like the unique style of the Richardson Studio and I think
the hand litho process is best demonstrated with these posters. The 30s and 40s
are the best with some of the film noir titles like The Blue Dahlia but they are
getting very difficult to find. There area handful ofcollectors
(including one in Paris) who have great collections but you just dont see the
good ones turn up very often. Here is the link again

2006-05-15 Thread Michael B

a) welcome back is in order

b) i own the half sheet framed. it is a great image poster,
showing Orson. small headshot of marlene dietrich. zsa zsa in the
credits.

great film. typical orson welles' ability to create the mood.
so realistic, that i don't always watchit because it is a bit scary.
in my collection, this is the youngest poster i own! (as close
to the 1960s as iget).

prices on thehalf sheet and the insert are all over the place on
ebay, but higher in auctions. I "stole" mine on ebay and also purchased a
WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION insert from a dealer with low feedback from
austrailia. a nice seller thattold me that he was selling
about 8 posters for a friend who collected marlene dietrich
stuff!!!

Re: [MOPO] DEAR OLD OLD OLD OLD FREINDS

2006-05-15 Thread Scott Burns
Being young is no excuse for having no knowledge of the world that preceded
you. History teachers must be crying in their beer. :)

I wasn't alive in 1941 but I know about Pearl Harbor, the War in Europe--and
that Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcon, Hold That Ghost, Suspicion,
Sergeant York, Here Comes Mr. Jordan and Babes on Broadway were
released that year. (Those are black and white movies for those of you who
don't recognize the titles). Even when I was 20 years old, I was aware of
what came before me.

It's disheartening to think that someone who was so incredibly famous at one
point in time can be completely unknown in just a generation. To quote
George C. Scott, quoting General George S. Patton: all glory is fleeting.
So is fame, sadly.

Maybe some of these youngsters need to play a little more Trivial
Pursuit--or pay attention in history class.

Sorry for the rant, but this is a topic that just drives me up a wall. I
guess, I'm getting old as Michael B put it. :)

My 2 cents!

Hell, even little kids listened to his program. Following is the link to a mini-bio that mentions the Neal Gabler biography that I read with absolute fascination. What it misses is that in the late 50s, Winchell's gravelly and urgent vocal delivery was used to great effect in the narrations for "The Untouchables" tv show. Check this

2006-05-15 Thread Dave Rosen

Agree with all this but also believe that education, like
everything else, really begins in the home. Or at the very least, needs to be
supported there by parents with an awareness of its value.

Reading is especially crucial for developing intellectual
curiosity and independent thinking. I am still stunned when I walk into
someone's home and don't see a book anywhere in sight. Meanwhile, the TV
(sometimes more than one) blares away, whether anyone is actually watching it or
not.

Lulled by thebig-screen nanny, many parentsno
longersee or understandthe value of reading to their children and
helping them to develop an interest in the world outside their
subdivision.

Meanwhile, the news and entertainment media serve
upfunhouse mirrorviews of the past, where nothing pre-dates the
Second World War or WW I at the earliest because the optics are not good enough
to interest someone brought up on high definition, plasma screens and
CGI.

Even when post-WW II events are dealt with we are usually
handed a pastiche of top-40 hits and clips from old TV shows instead of proper
scholarship and analysis. Talking heads are BORING. Going into the reasons
things really happenis BORING. Real history is BORING. That's the
message.

Yet nothing could be further from the truth.

I see this increasing lack of interest in or understanding of
or even simple recall of history asdistressingwhile North Americans
ramp up their pursuit of self-indulgent happiness to the detriment of the planet
as a whole.

(Sorry to go all earnest on you. Guess who was a history major
in college?)

Re: [MOPO] DEAR OLD OLD OLD OLD FREINDS and all the Ships at Sea!!!

2006-05-15 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
I've known who Winchell was since I was a little kid watching THE
UNTOUCHABLES on TV in Australia when it first screened.

Knowing who Winchell was, his connections with Hoover, later informed
considerable interest in the HUAC period of American history.

Not sure I'd place him alongside Murrow other than in fame at the time,
I suspect they worked from a completely different set of basic
journalistic principles. Parsons, probably, but not Murrow.

And for the record, I'll be 56 in September.

Interesting, many years ago when THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT was doing
the rounds as a project, it was shelved for some time because studio
research showed that the target audience of 15 year olds could not
relate to WW2 at all... and most of them had no idea what or when it was.

Ignorance of history is one of the major reasons the world is still a
pile of political and humanitarian doo-doo. But not let's start on that.

Re: [MOPO] DEAR OLD OLD OLD OLD FREINDS and all the Ships at Sea!!!

2006-05-15 Thread Henry Mazel
Winchell was more a columnist than a journalist. Today, he would have been on Fox. Ultra conservative, extremely powerful and influential in his heyday, he was also a friend of Damon Runyon. Closer in type to Drew Pearson than Murrow; Murrow was in a whole other league as a serious journalist.

If I'm not off topic yet, J.J. Hunsecker in Sweet Smell of Success was based on Winchell, or did I say that already?

Older than fifty, and all the ships at sea --

[MOPO] Fwd: [MOPO] fs 1932 Original GRAND HOTEL one sheet

2006-05-15 Thread Kainbach

Brek did make the right decision to go with Grey. I offered to purchase
this amazing piece but unfortunately it did not happen. I will be bidding,
certainly
What an amazing piece for an amazing film!
Philipp

Hi Philipp,
I have taken others advice and have pulled the eBay listing and am going
with Grey. I received several offers and
Heritage has agreed I would receive a portion of the BP of anyone that has
shown an interest in the poster to me. This
is part of the enticements to get me to let them market the poster.
I wanted to include as many as possible because I think well knowI
need the money more than them. I would like to include
your name on the "bonus" list, but don't have your last name unless it is
Kainbach. Please let me know if you don't mind
and best of luck if you decide to bid.
Thank you for your input and interest.
Cheers,
Brek

WOW, what an amazing find. Congratulations.
I would love to buy it but do not know the value or price I would pay. It
really depends. I would go with Grey bc he gets just amazing results.

I sold off all moy posters to my old buddy who will
remain a secret. I intend to devote my retirement too
practicing a bit of Law and managing myy band L.A.
Carpool and other musical artists.

I love to read the posts but need to sign off so that
I can clear a bit of my mail space. Can anyone tell me
where to send thhe e-mail and what to say to sign off

It's been fun, made lots of friends and had lots of
good times and memries with all of you in the net and
at the shows.

Jack Gold.
