[MOPO] Weird Shipping Requests

2008-11-01 Thread Ron Wisberg
Recently I had a foreign buyer contact me while an auction was running about a
lobby card asking if I would ship it in a tube.

I told them that I would ship the item flat, gave them a very brief history of
lobby cards, and sent them a link to learnaboutmovieposters.com so that they
could learn more about lobby cards etc.

They bid and won the item irregardless and then sent me an e-mail asking that I
roll the item in a sturdy tube to avoid creasing. I simply repeated something
similar to what a lobby card was and stated that by all means it should be
mailed flat.

They reluctantly told me that I could ship it how I felt correct but that they
would hold me responsible for it's shipping condition, especially because they
wanted it rolled as their other prints were.

Honestly, the lobby card did well but it did not command an unusual price, I'm
not sure exactly how to keep this buyer happy, but I am not going to roll it!
Knowing that I am at the mercy of the buyer this person could mess me over in
several ways and I hate that thought. And if I met their demands, the item
would show up looking like crap.

What do I do?

Hi Ron,
I think it's best to meet their demands since they asked for it and you did
your best to inform them and talk them out of it.
Some people just don't understand no matter how many times you try to explain.
Unfortunately you can't please them all.
I once bought a lobby card set from someone in Thailand and they also rolled
the complete set of 8. Ouch!
Good luck with this one!

My only suggestion is to get the largest (radius) tube possible so it's not
necessary to roll it very tightly. Also perhaps get some sheets of 11x17
paper and sandwich it between them?

Re: [MOPO] Weird Shipping Requests

2008-11-01 Thread Bruce Hershenson
It is not only newbies who have this problem!

I purchased a $1,600 linen six-sheet and a $2,000 set of 8 lobby cards from
Sotheby's in 1992, and they charged me their usual rip-off shipping (in this
case around $200). That didn't bother me nearly as much as when I received a
single very long tube, with the set of cards rolled within the lonen
six-sheet!

Fortunately, the cards were curled and not creased, and leaving the cards
under heavy weight for six months solved the problem, but it could have been
a disaster.

Re: [MOPO] Weird Shipping Requests

2008-11-01 Thread Cory glaberson
I disagree with other dealers who say ship it rolled. I think the person just
doesn't understand what kind of paper a lobby card is printed on. The desired
end result is getting them the item in the same condition as you sold it. You
take a greater chance of damaging the card by rolling it even if that's what
the customer wants.
Even if its what he requested, even if he insists, the buyer will not take
responsibility when the item arrives damaged. And since it was an eBay
transaction you are exposed to damaging feedback which eBay will not remove.

It a tough situation, but it happens all the time. Buyers give me wrong
addresses, pay the wrong amount, demand weird shipping changes and always ask
us to
break the law by lying on customs forms. They almost never admit they were
wrong. Its useless to even try. Sometiimes you have to protect people from
their own bad impulses. Just make sure you pack the card extra special with
extra
cardboard to stiffen it,

Cory

Ship it the correct way. You are the experienced pro.
If done correctly it will be fine.
otherwise make them email you a statement
that you are not responsible if shipped rolled.

As a business owner you can do everything correctly
and still not please everyone. It's hard to accept but true.

Re: [MOPO] Weird Shipping Requests...

2008-11-01 Thread MotionPictureArt.com
You guys are right. I was not thinking clear this morning because my little
girl (who is teething) kept me up all night.
When I started selling I learned the hard way that it is always best to ship
products the best way possible.
I had a customer that wanted the cheapest shipping rate possible for a lobby
card set. I was not allowed to re-enforce the set in any way and had to ship it
surface economy.
I warned the buyer over and over but he insisted. Guess what happened a few
weeks later. The buyer e-mails me that he received a folded and messed up lobby
set.
I immediately stopped using surface and/or economy shipping and started using
light but very firm floor boards for lobby cards and (recycled) PVC tubes for
posters.
I never had any problems since.

Ron
