[MOPO] FS: Apocalypse Now - Very Rare *Alternate* Japanese B0 (40x56) featuring the image of Marlon Brando
Good morning all! Right now I am entertaining inquiries into what easily may be one of the most difficult movie posters to obtain for the film *Apocalypse Now*. Everyone of course knows (and loves) the Japanese B0 artwork featuring the Huey choppers flying in over the ocean, while a lone surfer is riding the waves below. The artwork is unforgettable, has brilliant color and is just plain beautiful. I recently acquired the *alternate* Japanese B0, designed by the legend Eiko Ishioka, who also designed the helicopters/surfer artwork. For those who don't know, Eiko is also an Academy award-winning costume designer, who won for her work on the costume design in Coppola's *Dracula*. This alternate style features Marlon Brando's head coming up out of the river, with the entire jungle behind him burning from the napalm unleashed in the opening minutes of the film to The Doors' The End. At best, my sources put this at a very limited print run, as it was only used for the premiere of the film and subsequent media previews. It was * not* used for the theatrical run of the film, and may have maxed out at a very small run of fifty or less. I am currently waiting to hear back from Mrs. Ishioka for confirmation of the print run and the intended market for this poster. Most collectors have never even had the chance to see this incredible artwork because of its extremely limited run. I have had it brought up to practically mint condition by Sylvia and her team at Precision Restoration; in a few words, it is stunning. You might never have another chance to see this poster in this condition again. I wanted to give the MOPO community the first opportunity to see it, as I am considering taking it to Grey Smith at Heritage, with a substantial reserve. If you are interested, I will be accepting offers for this piece before I talk to Grey when it has been returned from Precision Restoration. This is a true piece of classic contemporary movie poster artwork, and is clearly an incredible investment opportunity due to its rarity, its importance as one of Eiko Ishioka's best examples of movie poster graphic design, and the profound impact of the artwork itself. An image, Steve, an image! Or a link to an image! Teasing MoPoer's like this is UNFAIR. Even if we can't afford it, most of us haven't seen such an animal and would love a preview. -kuz. -Original Message- Date: Tue, 24 Mar 2009 01:12:10 -0600 From: dsoneshe...@gmail.com Subject: FS: Apocalypse Now - Very Rare *Alternate* Japanese B0 (40x56) featuring the image of Marlon Brando To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Good morning all! [MOPO] FS: Very Rare Triple-bill Japanese Western Film Festival Poster
Hello again! I wanted to let everyone know about another incredible piece that I found in Tokyo. Some people might know that I have been on a sort of sabbatical and have taken some important time off from dealing movie posters; I was having personal and financial difficulties in the wake of a very critical back surgery, and I may have even lost a few friends in the process. For those individuals, I wish to extend my apologies once again. This period of rest also gave me the opportunity to revisit some of my connections in Tokyo and in the south of Japan. In that time I have been able to acquire some incredible examples of Japanese movie poster art. To be honest, some of them have left me speechless. One of them is the *Apocalypse Now* B0, designed by the Academy award-winning Costume and Graphic Designer Eiko Ishioka which you probably read about in my other email. In addition to a great year-of-release extended B3 for *La Dolce Vita*, I also acquired a very rare triple-bill Western poster, which was printed solely for use promoting a Western Film Festival. The poster features the film *Navajo Joe*, but the real treasure lies in the other two films featured, *For A Few Dollars Now*, and *The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly*. The poster is a unique size as well, measuring approximately 35x35. Since this is also coming back from Sylvia at Precision Restoration with the Apocalypse Now and the Dolce Vita, I do not have the specific measurements, because it is now on linen. This poster features not one, but two images of Clint Eastwood, along with whom I believe to be Aldo Sambrell (who played Duncan, the bandit leader), who worked with Sergio Leone many times over the course of his career. The titles and images of the two films and the two men appear over a montage of what appears to be Monument Valley, with a large band of men on horseback racing towards the foreground. My sources have told me that this poster was perhaps even more rare than the *Apocalypse Now* B0, because there were only three to four different versions printed for the festival, each featuring some of the different films being shown, and likely there were only a handful printed due to the nature of the limited run of the festival itself. If you are interested in seeing the artwork, which I would highly recommend, I will also be offering this for sale through Grey Smith at Heritage. Until I receive it back from Precision Restoration, I will be open to offers on this important piece of Western film history. Re: [MOPO] ds|onesheets and Japanese movie posters
Hello again. This will be my last email for the day (woot! I suspect some of you are thinking!), I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be returning from my sabbatical, and am ramping up for a re-opening of my movie poster business within the next six months to a year, and will be specifically focused on Japanese paper. Over the course of the last year, I have been taking some steps back to re-evaluate my core business plan, and what it will take to regain some of the integrity that I lost over the last six years due to a number of reasons, the main being my multiple spinal disc problems and the major surgery I had last October. This should have been transparent to my customers, and I used it as a crutch instead. I am investing a bulk of my time into my main problem, which was expediting shipments out on time. The positive side of all this is that I have been saving resources and money for some incredible major purchases from some of my contacts in Tokyo, Shinjuku, and the south of Japan. I also plan on travelling to Tokyo to meet some of them for the first time later this year. The *Apocalypse Now*B0 and the Western Film Festival poster featuring *For a Few Dollars More* and *The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly* are but just a small sample of the posters I am now finding after starting to dig deeper into the inventories of my contacts. My most recent acquisition? A set of five B1 (28x40) posters for *The Curious Case of Benjamin Button*, featuring Brad Pitt at age 7, age 24, age 30, and age 49, looking physically younger in each as he grows older. These could almost be considered portraits, each a poignant moment from the film.. This is a perfect example of what you find in Japanese movie poster artwork. Attention to detail. Multiple poster sets that feature a single motif from the film. Multiple character poster sets that focus on even small roles in the films they advertise. And above all, beautiful, moving artwork from the best graphic designers in Japan. You will often find that the artwork you see in the United States is practically droll and boring compared to Japanese artwork, and will also often be completely different art from their U.S. counterparts. The collectors that have bought from me in the past know exactly what I am talking about. The two *Kill Bill* films had at least 21 different styles of artwork that I know of to date, and I honestly don't think I've seen them all. I look forward to getting to know you again, and to meet new friends and customers. Thank you for your support. David, Thanks for posting the photos but personally, neither one does a thing for me. Japanese writing on a spaghetti western photo shopped poster just doesn’t go together. It’s like tacos and milk. Re: [MOPO] FS: Very Rare Triple-bill Japanese Western Film Festival + Ultra Rare Apocalypse Now
Hi Todd -- Well, Japanese posters have always had that photo-realism style of composition, even on posters dating back to the 1950s. I have a few program books my mother saved from Japan during the 1940s and 1950s and they're consistent with the hand-tinted photo look so common in vintage Japanese movie posters. I do love the Brando and naplam poster that Steve is selling, however, because if it's from the same artist (and it sure looks like it), it does mimics the more famous and more common image of the chopper and surfer that typically fetches more than the USA style one-sheet. Best, kuz. SHIPPING CHARGE FOR ALL YOU GET!* We feel certain that if you purchase even one of these 1,998 one-sheets, and then once you see how honestly we describe them and how we charge only the actual shipping cost and how we send them right out promptly and well-packed, that you will declare your independence from those auction houses with the outrageous buyers premiums, the over-graded items, the misleading images that obscure defects, the *mysterious maxed bids*, the outrageous shipping, and the *zero customer service*! If it has been a while since you have ordered from us, you should place an order just to see how we have pretty much perfected our system, to make all of our customers happy, before, during, and after *EVERY *sale! *Your money goes further with us!* In these uncertain economic times, doesn't it make sense to spend your money where it goes the absolute furthest? We auction everything with a $1 opening bid and no reserves, so we truly sell many items for just $1 or $2 or $3 (there are other auction places that have the nerve to claim they sell their items with $1 and no reserve like we do, but they have a minimum $9 buyers premium, which means those $1, $2, and $3 posters *ACTUALLY* cost you $10, $11, and $12)! We have *NO* buyers premiums, and we only charge the actual cost of shipping (often less, when a buyer buys multiple items). We regularly give lots of great bonuses, often more valuable than the items required to qualify for them! This week, we are auctioning *nearly 2,000 items *in our Tuesday and Thursday auctions, and it is virtually a certainty that some percentage of them will sell for bargain prices, and there may be some absolute steals! Remember that, unlike the majority of hobbies, where the money you spend on your hobby is gone forever, the money you spend buying movie paper will almost certainly be recovered the day you ever sell your collection (and many, many collectors have made lots of money on their collection over time, because unlike stocks, vintage movie paper continually rises over time!). -- *Tuesday auctions* On* March 17th, *we added* 999 folded one-sheets (including a great group of Boris Karloff horror one-sheets!) to our site*, and they close on *Tuesday, March 24th! *Read more about these below, or go see them right now in our * Tuesday Auction Gallery http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/13.html *at* * http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/13.html! *Some of the best ones are:* 4h007 BODY SNATCHER signed style A 1sh '45 by Robert Wise, cool art of Boris Karloff! 4h004 INVISIBLE MENACE other company 1sh '38 great completely different art of spooky Boris Karloff! 4h005 MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG 1sh '39 cool art of weird horrifying mad scientist Boris Karloff! 4h690 MUMMY'S CURSE style A 1sh '44 great image of bandaged Lon Chaney Jr. menacing pretty girl! 4h403 FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN 1sh R49 great art of monsters fighting + Lugosi holding girl! 4h130 BIRDS 1sh '63 Alfred Hitchcock shown full-length, art of Tippi Hedren attacked by birds! 4h556 JAWS 1sh '75 artwork of Steven Spielberg's classic man-eating shark attacking sexy swimmer! 4h203 CHINATOWN 1sh '74 great art of smoking Jack Nicholson Faye Dunaway, Roman Polanski! 4h292 DOCTOR ZHIVAGO pre-Awards style C 1sh '65 great different artwork portraits of top 8 stars! 4h001 SON OF FRANKENSTEIN 1sh R53 great image of Boris Karloff, the new juggernaut of destruction! 4h002 HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN 1sh R50 Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., history's weirdest household! 4h006 TOWER OF LONDON style B 1sh '39 great art of executioner Boris Karloff Basil Rathbone! 4h780 POINT BLANK 1sh '67 cool artwork of Lee Marvin pointed pistol, film noir! 4h743 ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. 1sh '66 full-length sexiest prehistoric cave woman Raquel Welch! 4h689 MUMMY 1sh '59 Terence Fisher, best art of Christopher Lee as the bandaged monster! 4h962 TWO-LANE BLACKTOP 1sh '71 James Taylor is the driver, Warren Oates is GTO, Laurie Bird 4h644 MARRIAGE IS A PRIVATE AFFAIR 1sh '44 sexy art of beautiful young glamorous Lana Turner! 4h961 TWO MRS. If I'd bought it because I very much wanted it, I'd go there myself and bring along a bodyguard or two (I mean, why should they get the day off?). If I'd bought it as an investment, I'd just make sure that it was properly and dependably insured. *Well it might be worth something for any one collecting Hirschfeld art. It's quite unique and I like it!! I must ask. I guess I am curious as a restorer. The two pieces you've shown, who did the Linen backing? Just really really poorly stretched Linen on to the frame. No wonder some collectors don't like LB posters. That is not cool and most likely an obstacle to sell these two posters. Bothersome, dario. * David Lieberman wrote: http://www.cinemasterpieces.com/apics2008/whomar09.jpg not a movie poster, but to advertise the book in 1973 Hirschfeld art. is this worth anything, or is it a piece of garbage? Re: [MOPO] check out the shopping spree some kid went on
Dave, I feel.. uh.. better now. I'm not the only guy this happened to. We sold an $8500 poster this morning to this same kid's Dad. Only NOT. Plus the kid gave the address and telephone number to a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in West DesMoines. I called the buyer, got the church instead, and the Church Lady asked me if my call was about ebay. I began to get the picture. Ah, fleabay and the joys of the internet. Well, at least I thought it was Christmas Morning for 10 minutes. I'd like the opinion of the list, however. What do you think is in order? a) Grounding b) Woodshed Discipline or c) the Dad actually buying THE MAN FROM PLANET X for his son I would write lol, but somebody's got a lock on that. And I don't feel like lol-ing actually. as soon as we file a dispute and ebay approves it, the fees are credited as soon as the other party agrees. in this case it was just a few hours. the other party has up to a week to agree to cancel the transaction, if they don't then we can end it and get the fees back then. so.best case scenario we get the fees back almost immediately.worst case it takes 7 days. AOL EmailThanks for the info. I guess being on other side of world makes a difference to what they can get away with. Last time it happened to us was a $20k poster. Ebay would only credit the VFV against future listings, and of course the initial listing fee was forfeit to them. - Original Message - From: David Lieberman To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Wednesday, March 25, 2009 12:56 PM Subject: Re: [MOPO] check out the shopping spree some kid went on as soon as we file a dispute and ebay approves it, the fees are credited as soon as the other party agrees. in this case it was just a few hours. the other party has up to a week to agree to cancel the transaction, if they don't then we can end it and get the fees back then. so.best case scenario we get the fees back almost immediately.worst case it takes 7 days. [MOPO] mopo hall monitors
i was privately messaged by a member telling me i had posted beyond the limit of 3 per day.. but this message wasn't from scott. and yet, a number of others have also done the same today (sellers) and they often do on many days.. question and comment.. have certain members been appointed as mopo hall monitors? if not- and if sellers can express concerns, thoughts and ideas, that may take more than 3 daily posts to do-- then us simple folk who like and enjoy this hobby, should be allowed the same latitude without privately being told not to do so. my 2¢. jeff Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: lists...@listserv.american.edu In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.

[MOPO] Fw: Bad Actors - This political theater is cheap, but we can't afford it.
--- On Tue, 3/24/09, Harry Gendler gendl...@ix.netcom.com wrote: From: Harry Gendler gendl...@ix.netcom.com Subject: Bad Actors - This political theater is cheap, but we can't afford it. To: Harry Gendler gendl...@ix.netcom.com Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 10:33 AM National Review March 24, 2009 Bad Actors - This political theater is cheap, but we can't afford it. By Thomas Sowell http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZTA5ZDdmYjEzOWFiMGI0NGE1YmFhYTUzZmNhYzUxMTA= Death threats to executives at AIG, because of the bonuses they received, are one more sign of the utter degeneration of politics in our time. Rep. Barney Frank has threatened to summon these executives before his committee and force them to reveal their home addresses — which would of course put their wives and children at the mercy of whatever kooks might want to literally take a shot at them. Whatever the political or economic issues involved, this is not the way such issues should be resolved in America. We are not yet a banana republic, though that is the direction in which some of our politicians are taking us — especially those politicians who make a lot of noise about “compassion” and “social justice.” What makes this all the more painfully ironic is that it is precisely those members of Congress who have had the most to do with creating the risks that led to the current economic crisis who are making the most noise against others, and summoning people before their committee to be browbeaten and humiliated on nationwide television. No one pushed harder than Barney Frank to force banks and other financial institutions to reduce their mortgage-lending standards in order to meet government-set goals for more home ownership. Those lower mortgage-lending standards are at the heart of the increased riskiness of the mortgage market and of the collapse of Wall Street securities based on those risky mortgages. Sen. Christopher Dodd has played the same role in the Senate as Barney Frank played in the House of Representatives. Now both are summoning government employees and the officials of financial institutions before their committees to be lambasted in front of the media. Dodd and Frank know that the best defense is a good offense. Both know how hard it would be to defend their own roles in the housing debacle, so they go on the offensive against others who are in no position to reply in kind, given the vindictive powers of Congress. This political theater is in one sense cheap beyond words. In another sense, it is costly beyond words. It is cheap because the politicians who are creating this distraction from their own role also voted for the very legislation that enabled contracted bonuses to be paid by companies like AIG that received government bailout money. If members of Congress can’t be bothered to read the laws they pass, then they have no basis for whipping up lynch-mob outrage against people who did read the law and acted within the law. Just as everyone seemed to be a military expert a couple of years ago, when it was chic to say that the “surge” in Iraq would not work, so today everyone seems to be an expert on executive pay. Whether the particular executives who received bonuses were the ones responsible for AIG’s problems, or were among those who warned against those problems, is something that those of us on the outside don’t know. That includes those in politics and the media who are making the loudest noise. The politicians claim to be protecting the taxpayers’ money. But having politicians trying to micro-manage any business is far more likely to make those businesses lose more money, including the taxpayers’ money. Securities based on risky mortgages are what toppled financial institutions, but it was the government that made the mortgages risky in the first place, by making home-ownership statistics the holy grail for which everything else was to be sacrificed, including commonsense standards for making home loans. Politicians and bureaucrats micro-managing the mortgage sector of the economy is precisely how today’s economic disaster began. Why anyone would think that their micro-managing the automobile industry, or executive pay across a wide sweep of other industries, is likely to make things better in the economy is a mystery. The real point is to pander to envy and resentment against people who make a lot of money. Envy is always referred to by its political alias, “social justice.” But to put the lives of the wives and children of executives at risk for the sake of Beltway grandstanding shows how low our political saviors have sunk. — Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. [MOPO] TWO COLLECTOR ONE SHEETS STILL AVAILABLE
Hi members - This will be a last call for anyone who is interested in getting the BULLITT one sheet and DEAD MAN'S EYES one sheet I posted for sale several days ago. I have reduced the asking price for the BULLITT one sheet to $375 (postage included) and the price for the DEAD MAN'S EYES one sheet is now $60 (plus postage). If I decide to put them on EBAY, those will be the starting bids. Pictures are available upon request. BULLITT is excellent except for a couple of border chips (easily repaired) and DEAD MAN'S EYES is backed on thin piece of cardboard with some border restorations. Thanks for replying.
