Damn! How sad! Soupy was part of my childhood, for sure. The Top 5: Captain Kangaroo, Howdy Doodie, Mr. Peepers, Sky King (Penny was HOT!), and Soupy. Sales recently fell backstage at a local Emmy awards show in New York and developed serious ailments after that, Dver said. I knew it! I was in my 30's when I got to meet Bob Keeshan at the toy show in NYC. I couldn't believe how emotional I got. It was the wierdest thing. I've met tons of famous people whom I've admired over the years but when he came to the booth I was working I was completely overcome with emotion. He and his group must have thought I was out of my mind. A grown man practically blubbering over meeting Captain Kangaroo! What a maroon. I've never had that reaction to anyone before or since. He was extremely gracious and generous with the few minutes I got to talk to him. Obviously it's a moment I won't/can't forget and have never fully understood. Re: [MOPO] Soupy Sales gets his last pie in the face at 83
Sometimes the legend is better than the reality! Remember how everyone told how Soupy got away with outrageous dirty jokes on his show (like I took my wife to a baseball game - I kissed her on the strikes, and she kissed me on the balls)? Never happened! See http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/soupy2.asp But the green pieces of paper remark is real. I remember when it happened in 1965 and the furor it caused (but apparently no tape of it survives). His show was not shown the following week, but returned the next week. Contrary to legend, Sales did NOT receive tons of money from kids, only a few dollars. See http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/soupy1.asp But the stories are better than the truth. Re: [MOPO] Soupy Sales gets his last pie in the face at 83
Well, we must all be about the same age because between PJ and Glenn I'm having flashbacks to the late 50's and early 60's. I watched Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Greenjeans and Bunny Rabbit every morning of my young childhood. I loved Soupy Sales and watched Sky King, along with Roy and Dale every Saturday (Happy trails to you!). I would run home from school to watch Dick Clark and American Bandstand, even before they went national. Even the Mickey Mouse club and those Mouseketeers! Even at the tender age of 4 or 5, I waited every week to hear Ricky Nelson sing at the end of the Ozzie and Harriet Show. Wow, he was so cute! Sometimes I think back and it seems like somebody else's lifetime. We use to have a local kid's show in Columbus, Ohio called Flippo the Clown and he was on every afternoon. When I was in the first grade, my Brownie troop got to go on the Flippo the Clown Show and I was seated in the first row, on the end, on the stage. When he made his grand entrance, he grabbed my Brownie beanie and twirled it on my head. I thought I was so special!! After the show, we were taken down a hallway to exit the building and Flippo, now without his red wig, was walking in front of us with another man talking. He was using swear words in his conversation with the other man, so from that point on, I wasn't so keen on his show. One of those childhood idols bit the dust that day!! The great thing is, look at how many cherished memories we all have just because of these people. That's a great contribution of someone's life, no matter what. [MOPO] Showing Plan 9 from Outer Space
Hey Guys, For all you southern Californian's, Cinefamily is going to be screening Plan 9 from Outer Space and Ed Wood tomorrow night. Their website is www.cinefamily.org and they house the old silent movie theater on Fairfax. They screened about 10 or so of Jerry Lewis's movies over the summer every Saturday night that I attended and it was a blast. It a great place to get on the mailing list for as they are also associated with the screenings in the Hollywood Cemetary during the summer months and they always have something great going on. They get good prints and it really is alot of fun. Thought some of you might enjoy knowing about this. I had to look that up. Patina (pronounced /ˈpætənə/ or /pəˈtiːnə/) is a film on the surface of bronze or similar metals (produced by oxidation over a long period); a sheen on wooden furniture produced by age, wear, and polishing; or any such acquired change of a surface through age and exposure. On metal, patina is a coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides or carbonates formed on the surface during exposure to the elements (weathering). Patina also refers to accumulated changes in surface texture and colour that result from normal use of an object such as a coin or a piece of furniture over time. It could be the seller is referring to the tape stain residue on the left border that have a bronze-like patina. Yes. That's it. pj --- On Fri, 10/23/09, Jeff Potokar jpotok...@ca.rr.com wrote: From: Jeff Potokar jpotok...@ca.rr.com Subject: Re: [MOPO] CASABLANCA half sheet-no feedback ever posted To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Date: Friday, October 23, 2009, 5:15 PM ah yes.. the half sheet with the wonderful patina... jeff On Oct 23, 2009, at 4:06 PM, Paul Gerrard wrote: On the subject of another possibly more genuine half sheet that was mentioned on MOPO previously, the $35 Notorious - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=320430767855 - the seller received a negative for not going through with the sale. Re: [MOPO] NY Times - Hollywood Memorabilia Show in Burbank
Ray sold it over a year ago. The last show I attended was in April 08. I thought the new owners were taking the show into a different direction, concentrating much more on autograph seekers and stars than on dealers and buyers of movie memorabilia. It was still fun, but a little different and in some ways more professionally run. Did anyone go to the last show that was reported on in the NYTimes and if so, how was it? This was the first April show I missed in about ten years. FRANC -Original Message- From: MoPo List [mailto:mop...@listserv.american.edu] On Behalf Of Tom A. [MOPO] $35. NOTORIOUS HALF SHEET!!
On the subject of another possibly more genuine half sheet that was mentioned on MOPO previously, the $35 Notorious - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=320430767855 - the seller received a negative for not going through with the sale. After this sold on Ebay with a BUY-IT-NOW price of only $35. I'm sure someone offered the seller at least ten times that price for the poster. Since it was also broadcast all over MoPo I wouldn't be surprised if it was a fellow MoPo member. As I think Michael pointed out a couple of weeks ago, the seller hadn't received any for the other items he sold either. One new comment has been added since then tho (for a watch) - unable to receive paypal payment, however returned money. item not received Looks like his PayPal account could have been frozen. Since ebay keeps its actions secrets, we may never know whether that resulted from the sterling efforts of MOPO members to report the Casablanca auction, or from another dubious auction, or from a disgruntled buyer, or from some other misdemeanour involving PayPal, etc etc. Having said that, he's still registered on ebay, so hasn't been thrown off. ViewItemitem=160360019344ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT). everyone felt it was a fake and yet it sold to someone for 627.00. what i think is so interesting is that all this time later, NO feedback has been left for this seller, on this item, either positive or negative. Seems more than a little off. Re: [MOPO] NY Times - Hollywood Memorabilia Show in Burbank
Dargis concludes the article with: However enjoyable and gratifying their exchanges with the fans, these were actors at work. As they smiled for us, signed our photographs, shared their memories, they were also giving us a performance. And like all performances, they were as manufactured as they were absolutely real. This observation is a load of codswallop intended to give the article an air of importance.
