Re: [MOPO] The Deke Richards Collection
Hi Nathalie: Yes, he was indeed kind and a true gentleman. Soon after he passed away I was getting groceries and I was right underneath the stores PA system. All of a sudden the Jackson Five song ABC that Deke wrote came on the PA system. I thought Deke is living on with his extreme musical talent with Motown and Berry Gordy and The Corporation. Motown lives on. Very nice to learn about that RARE insert. Best, --Tom Pennock In a message dated 7/5/2017 10:19:11 P.M. [MOPO] Worst Movie You Like?
I got to thinking about the worse movie that I like. Plus I also have a "MINT" 40" x 60" rolled poster on it as well as the one sheet. It's "Village Of The Giants" (1965) Directed by Bert I. Gordon. Also features a young 12 year old Ronny Howard as "genius" the child scientist. Plus Johnny Crawford, Tommy Kirk, Beau Bridges, Tim Rooney, Joy Harmon. What is your worst movie you will admit to liking even though it is bad? I am also surprised they would put out a 40" x 60" on this movie but it's a drive in movie really. Those 40" x 60" posters were intended for drive in's and for being out doors in the elements. --Tom Pennock Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: lists...@listserv.american.edu In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.

Re: [MOPO] Adrian Cowdry, 1964-2016
I talked to Adrian from time to time about 007. He was so intelligent. He must have suffered from depression. There is such a stigma to these types of illnesses. There should NOT be. I never met Adrian in person. But over two decades, we engaged in zillions of conversations that went well beyond his known affection for movie posters, World War II history, conservative U.K. politics, Harley Davidson motorcycles - and of course, all things James Bond. * Adrian was only 52 when he took his own life - and it appears that he engineered his death to coincide with his birthday, which was two days ago, on August 29. He was a passionate thinker, going against the grain on many issues, peppering his commentaries with hilariously worded language. Standing at 6-5 - he was literally and figuratively a larger-than-life man. * We shared dark ideologies about the meaning of life, politics and families. (He leaves behind a wife and three grown children.) While I do not know how Adrian chose to end his life - nor the specific catalysts that spurred him - our many exchanges included emails (which I've spent hours re-reading today) - which suggest how death - whether by natural causes or otherwise - was regarded as a matter-of-fact subject for both of us - albeit for different reasons. * (NOTE: the following is my opinion, not necessarily factual). In my view, Adrian's feelings about suicide had hardened during the past 10 years. It is also my view that he was NOT mentally ill, which is a reflexive diagnosis given by others who react to this type of horror. I believe Adrian's views solidified as the result of at least three gigantic events: 1) getting cancer in 2008 and joining the list of millions of "survivors" who go into remission - but are forever haunted by its possible return; 2) the suicide of his terminally ill father in December 2013; and, 3) the death of his mother just 36 hours later, by, in Adrian words, "a broken heart." His parents had been married for 50 years. * For all his joviality and cutting wit - Adrian was a serious and practical man - who strived for perfection in everything he did. Today, as I reflect on his great but short life, I am struck by the following passages, excerpted over several emails we exchanged in 2013 and 2014. These are Adrian's own words: * "There is an argument for euthanasia and assisted suicide. You would not allow a dog to suffer in this way. The arguments about playing god are strong - but not as strong as (making sure that) your loved ones do not suffer..." * "Like you, I do not have any religious bent, I do not condemn anyone their faith - but I cannot believe in an all seeing creator. I do believe, however - that our bodies are not the be all and end all...I firmly believe that souls live on. Whether they remain to help loved ones - or to just keep an eye (on us) - I am not sure. But I often feel the presence of folk from my past who were close to me. And I often dream that I am conversing and perhaps even receiving messages from them, (such as), "tell so and so not to worry about us, because all is well..." This could be my subconscious speaking - for which I have no explanation - so I go with the flow and accept them for what they are - that they are dreams with possible messages." * "And like you I (sometimes) feel the presence of someone (who has passed). Re: [MOPO] Professionally Dry Mounted
Hi Sue: I am a bit late to this topic but I started collecting original movie posters in 1974. First film in 1963 at the age of eight and then advertising materials. Yes, my local frame shop had the dry mounting press and unfortunately early on there was this insistance that everything would be better off dry mounted. Well they devalued many of my best posters. I was not aware that dry mounting was a reversable process. They had no clue as to the value of the collectibles they were dry mounting. I think they wanted to pay off their dry mounting press. I really do. They had no clue about the linenbacking process. Most of the posters they did of mine were on cardboard stock. Yes, at some point it would be worthwhile for me to spend $300.00 per poster to reverse this process. I wish I could send Devine's Picture Framing the bill! They defaced my posters. First thing I tell NEW collectors now is don't ever dry mount your posters or let professional picture framers talk you into it. Yes, picture framers STILL do this today unfortunately. Best, Tom Pennock In a message dated 7/8/2016 8:40:11 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, filmfantast...@msn.com writes: Hey Scott and all,. dry mounting was a common practice in frame shops in the 90"s and before. While I always discouraged a customer from doing so,. many times they insisted because they wanted the poster to be perfectly flat. Many frame shops still tell customers to dry mount their poster. I have many customers who dry mounted their posters long ago when the posters were less valuable. Now their posters are worth money and I have them removed from backing material and linenbacked, So the poster isn't a total loss, but it has to be worth the cost of removing from the backing and then linebacking,. which is typically around $300. Hi Channing: I have this poster. I would think the large space would be for theatre imprints like the "Moonraker" 45 x 59 subway poster which had a lot of theatres imprints that indicated they were showing the film. Re: [MOPO] Seeking Prices On French Citizen Kane French Grande
I think that with certain posters the bottom line is what someone is wiling to pay in the end. Looking at the auction results databases of both Bruce and Heritage there are many different end results. Many variables come into play with certain posters and in many cases I think that is why the prices differ so much Especially with the foreign posters. --Tom Pennock In a message dated 1/20/2015 12:58:00 A.M. [MOPO] OFF TOPIC: Limited Edition Blu Ray Sets?
When is a Blu Ray box set no longer considered a limited edition? Really any collectible? I am interested in the Batman Blu Ray box set. The edition is 95,000 units. Any opinion as to a cut of point on a limited edition collectible as far as volume? At what point would one think a collectible would not quality as a limited edition anymore? Re: [MOPO] OFF TOPIC: Limited Edition Blu Ray Sets?
Hi Tom: Yes, this is kind of what I thought that it was a gimmick. That's a pretty large limited edition of almost 100,000 units. I think the list on this Batman TV collection box set is something like $275.00. I will wait for the price to really drop. I do want it on blu ray. The thing is some collectors got it early. One noticed that of the entire series of episodes there was missing ONE minute of footage at the end of one episode. So now some are planning to return their ENTIRE box sets demanding a new set or if not a replacement blu ray of that specific disc. I think theyt have OCD worse than I do. LOL Let me know sometime how your son Tommy is doing. All The Best, --Tom Pennock In a message dated 11/19/2014 9:54:40 P.M. I suggest just buy for Fun and entertainment as it was a cool 66 show and youll get your moneys worth..other then that loan it to frends and family and Kids to discover it..as a colectable there will be 1000s avaiible. trust me on this...and I bet it will be re-relased as much as possible if there is a interest in the show.. It has been my understanding that the first release posters have a Dear Film (distributor) logo on the bottom left, while the right side have the United Artists logo within a circle and (in smaller type) A Transamerica Company Now, I know it can be hard to date Italian posters, but one of the best tells is the logo of the distributor/production company. In this case, the circular logo at the right was used in 1967-1968; the Transamerica logo that is in the left of the poster in question was used from 1968-1975. This film was released in Italy in August 1967. Perhaps it is a second printing, perhaps a 1970's reissue (which is what I have thought) but I don't see how it could be first release. Re: [MOPO] Italian Bond posters
Hi Bruce: I would say it could be 1968 or 1969. Yes, before 1970. The OHMSS one sheet has a copyright date of 1969 on it like the OHMSS window card. The OHMSS National Screen Service stamp on the back states 1970 on the 1969 one sheet. Transamerica must have aquired United Artists in 1968. As far as the Italian poster in Grey's Heritage Auction it definitely is a re-issue. It should state Dear Film on it as the foreign distributor to be a first release. Re: [MOPO] Hanging Six Sheets
I have about 10 linenbacked six sheets right now I want to rotate. My brother was here from Seattle last week. I told him this either is the best idea I ever had with these posters or the worst idea. I never thought about the stretcher board. I have everything from Viva Las Vegas to early Sean Connery James Bond. Mary Poppins, Sound Of Music Towering Inferno The Spy Who Loved Me (Peak). Will consider the frame support. I bought frames with clips but rotating the display will be a job. I could lean them against a wall if stretched to a frame. I like the R-1965 Dr. No/From Russia With Love. Would like to display the six sheet from 1965's Thunderball next year. Just got the Viva Las Vegas back last week. Would like to display also the six sheet from The Nutty Professor. The vibrant stone litho from Down To The Sea In Ships which is striking. One Three Stooges six sheet. The Mary Poppins is 84 x 84. They all have about two to three inches of linen border. I don't know quite where to start. I enjoyed reading these ideas. It gave me some hope!!! Re: [MOPO] R.I.P. Movie Collector's World 1976-2012
I remember reading the first issue of Film Collector's World in 1976 at a friends place in Ann Arbor. That was when Alan Light launched the publication with Rick Best. At that time I think it was both film prints and movie memorabilia. Then 'The Big Reel came along for film collectors and Film Collector's World was renamed Movie Collectors World for movie memorabilia collectors. I think that Krause Publications purchased Movie Collectors World from Alan and then at some point Brian purchased the publication. I was receiving The Big Reel, Classic Images and Movie Collector's World. Then because of cyberspace the hobbies went over to the internet and computers and e-bay. I still miss the excitement of reading these publications right away and then calling on the telephone hoping to get a film print or poster. I spent numerous hours with a magnifying glass looking at some of the very small ads in Movie Collector's World. One small ad offered an original insert from 'Forbidden Planet for $100.00 rolled. Sometimes I think it's not as much fun as it used to be. I enjoyed running to the phone and being ecstatic when the seller said Yes, we still have it. I remember buying many posters and lobbies from Alan Levine. I hope he is well. Thank you Brian for ALL that you have done for the hobby of movie poster collecting. I still have many back issues of Movie Collector's World as well as stacks of The Big Reel and Classic Images. I like to use them for reference and also for the nostalgia aspect. It seems like it was more fun back then. Maybe I am just getting old. --Tom Pennock In a message dated 10/16/2012 8:39:09 P.M. But Toy Shop bit the dust five or six years ago, so it's a tribute to Brian that he was able to sustain MCW all these years, given the changes in technology and thus how people collect. Movie Collector's World 1976-2012 I am so very sad to announce that On Monday, October 15 two of the most highly respected film buff publications, Movie Collector’s World (MCW) and Classic Images (CI) announced that they had come to an agreement on the sale of MCW. Classic Images has agreed to buy Movie Collectors World, a Michigan based newspaper published by Brian Bukantis since 1985. The agreement was made on Friday, October 12. The two papers, serving movie buffs around the world, will be merged into one monthly publication. Under the terms of the agreement, currently active paid MCW subscribers will receive each monthly issue of CI, beginning with the December issue, for the length of their MCW subscription term. Those of you who only joined this hobby the past few years only know of MCW as a thin magazine, filled mostly with auction announcements and ads for the foremost dealers. But for those of us who have been in the hobby for decades, we remember so well those pre-Internet days when a large portion of the collectors and dealers subscribed to this then bulging publication, because it was THE number one way to buy and sell, and pretty much the most important day of the month was the one when MCW arrived! This really IS the end of an era. I want to publicly thank Brian Bukantis for publishing it the past 27 years, and for doing a superb job throughout that time (of course, the ONLY thing he couldn't overcome was the Internet, which is rapidly putting EVERY newspaper and magazine out of business, and Brian should be quite proud that he was able to continue publishing as long as he did). He is a great guy, both personally and professionally, and he added immeasurably to our hobby. The ONLY silver lining to this is that Brian's life now won't be spent going from one urgent deadline to another! [MOPO] James Bond-50 Years Of Movie Posters Book
Tomorrow Is Global James Bond Day! To Celebrate 50 Years Of James Bond! I pre-ordered the Blu Ray 007 23 video collection set from Amazon.com in January since it had a picture months ago of this book James Bond-50 Years of Movie Posters as an Amazon Exclusive. Then I later found out that the book Amazon was offering for FREE as a bonus with the Blu Ray collection was abridged to something like 77 pages. Really a teaser. So I bought the complete book separate from Amazon.com which is 350 pages. I ordered the video set separately too. Both had free shipping. The hard cover book is very nicely published in the United States by DK Publishing. The book comes in a very nice heavy cardboard sleeve and the quality of the poster pages are printed on slick paper stock and very nice. Plus there is an envelope on the left inside top book cover for two commemorative poster reproduction print outs. One from the Italian 39 x 55 Dr. No and the poster artwork from Octopussy The book is by production designer Dennis Gassner. I do wish that someone had proof read the book prior to publication to check for errors. I have enjoyed Tony Nourmands book for years. I think Tony would have been a good choice. Some of the posters are pictured as original first release and it's very plain to see some are re-releases. The Transamerica logo is the major give away on the early Sean Connery 007 Bonds. During the early Sean Connery Bond films era Transamerica did not own United Artists. There are other small errors in descriptions too. But it is a very nice quality book. Very much worth the $27.00 from Amazon.com. The Blu Ray set is wonderful too and I was able to purchase it for only $150.00 with free shipping.

Yes, full frame pan and scan. Not good. I thought it might get you by until a good remastered official release DVD comes out in this country. You need a good transfer in the right aspect ratio from the best film elements possible. It seems like it would be out as a DVD-R made on demand if they don't want to press them in the US. The Archive DVD-R's are better than nothing. But I do like the pressed DVD's better. --TP In a message dated 3/12/2012 2:11:21 P.M. Rich: This Cinderfella poster is beautiful and Jerry Lewis has the original oil painting this great poster was created from in his living room. For Paramount to commission Norman Rockwell to create this poster and other key advertising materials on this title was a very special thing. This artwork is Americana. I am going to have this restored and paperbacked and framed. Then display it with my linenbacked French Nutty Professor one panel poster. Cinderfella is my most favorite of ALL the films Jerry made. Jerry Lewis is a hero to me. I have a disability. --Tom Pennock In a message dated 1/12/2011 2:55:27 P.M. Also this film is my personal favorite of ALL of Jerry's films. Norman Rockwell did not design that many move posters and I think this the Best one he did. This poster is Americana. Artwork by Norman Rockwell. LIke Rudy said National Screen produced less than 1,000 of these types of posters. Very expensive to produce. Anyone have one of these? Just curious as to how many are out there. Also condition too! [MOPO] Todd's Advance 1935 One Sheet
I was also hoping that Todd's one sheet would set a world record. It's so rare being one of a kind in existence. I would not give it away either if the one sheet was mine.
[MOPO] I Agree Bruce
Considering how few lot's have gone unsold and considering the economy and all this auction is definitely going good. Yes, it is indeed VERY high end material. I think Heritage has done a remarkable job! --Tom Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: lists...@listserv.american.edu In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.
[MOPO] Visa De Censure Printing Information On French Posters
When did the Visa De Censure information first appear on French posters? Namely French Grandes. I was under the impression that this started in 1960. I would ask Ed Poole about this. I currently don't have access to LAMP. The Visa De Censure number in question is N 595.
